TIDEings - November 2012

JLNVB Mission The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. is an organization of women, committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

President’s Message November has arrived with a sense of anticipation of the upcoming holiday season. Neighborhoods are decorated with the colors of the season and the autumn air is fresh and crisp. The race is on to prepare for the meal we anxiously anticipate each year...on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time for giving thanks – a time to share with family, friends, and loved ones – a time for us all to reflect on life’s many blessings. It’s also (to a lesser extent) a wonderful time to eat great food, watch football, and plan your route of attack to maximize your Black Friday shopping spree. This year, I want us to challenge ourselves to take honest inventory of EVERYTHING we have to be thankful for. Doesn’t it sometimes seem like such a stretch when assigning ourselves the task of listing our blessings; that for which we should be appreciative? Personally, I always have to think really hard, then I feel a sense of embarrassment because I know I’m trying to look for all the “extra special” things, and unintentionally forgetting the “regular” things.

In drafting this article, I was overwhelmed with all of my blessings. I have a husband who thinks I hung the moon (I am quite smitten for him, too), two healthy, beautiful children, a supportive family, better friends than I could have ever imagined, and I am involved with the BEST women’s organization in Hampton Roads. I have never considered myself to be a lucky person, but I sure am blessed and VERY THANKFUL. I am very humbled and thankful that I get to serve as this year’s president. Daily, I have the opportunity to work with spirited, dedicated women with a can-do attitude and a servant mentality. I am thankful for the unparalleled training I have received. I am grateful that, for the second year in a row, we will be hosting the “Little Hands, Big Difference” event at Pembroke Mall where I can also help teach my children how to “give thanks” and give back to the community. Mostly, I am forever grateful for the friends I have made in my ten years of membership. Thanksgiving is the holiday of thankfulness, warmth, and togetherness. Before you get bogged down with the craziness of the season, I urge you to stop and reflect on ALL of your blessings, as I am confident there are many.

Best Wishes,

Melissa Steadman 2012-2013 President Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

A Season of Thanksgiving: THANK YOU JLNVB MEMBERS FOR YOUR IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY As our 2012-2013 League year progresses, we are proud to share that our work in the Hampton Roads community continues to make an impact in the lives of women, children, and their families every day. Before the League year winds down in May, members of JLNVB will have volunteered hundreds of community hours in our region. Here is a brief snapshot of our community initiatives to date:

YWCA Make & Give During the October GMM, members of the JLNVB made survival kits that included toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, soap, and deodorant for the YWCA Women in Crisis Domestic Violence Program. The program’s mission is to empower and educate survivors of domestic violence and the community through advocacy, intervention, and support. They serve victims of domestic violence and their children with their shelters, local 24-hour Women’s Helpline, legal advocacy services, support groups, and a wide array of other services, including crisis counseling, life skills, art therapy, transitional housing, volunteer placement, internships, children’s programming, and community education services.

Teens with a Purpose Junior League members served as judges to determine 5 finalists for the Teens with a Purpose “Move Maker Award.” This award is intended to honor a young person between the ages of 13 and 18. This person has persevered in spite of adversities that may have held him/her back in the past. This individual has also shown extraordinary, ongoing strides in at least one of the following categories: personal growth, academic/vocational advancement, artistic expression, and/or service to others.

A Season of Thanksgiving Continued CHKD Make & Give Also during the October GMM, the children of JLNVB members made fall bags for 7C floor general surgery patients at CHKD. The bags included bubbles, tattoos, curly straws, and puzzle games.

Ronald McDonald House The JLNVB continues to support the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Norfolk to provide a “home away from home for families with children facing medical challenges. Throughout the year, League members purchase food items and prepare homemade dinners on site for the families.

Kids CafĂŠ JLNVB members volunteered to work with children in second through fifth grade. Volunteers shared some of their favorite exercises and the importance of a healthy lifestyle with the children. Every child assisted in making trail mix and received a recipe card to take home. The students also completed an exercise activity composed by committee member Jackie Stephenson who is a physical education teacher.

Park Place Child Life Center The Park Place Child Life Center has grown from an after school homework club to an arts and cultural center where children are made to feel safe and special. In order to support this great organization, JLNVB volunteers interacted with the children and assisted them with homework activities.

Delightful Thanksgiving Recipes FROM THE JLNVB COOKBOOKS Submitted by Christie Ross, Creator of Confectionary Concoctions & All Things Yummy Buttercream & Sprinkles It is hard to believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner, but it’s never too early to start thinking about your menu. Toast to Tidewater and Tidewater on the Half Shell offer a variety of wonderful inspirations for your holiday table. Consider a twist on traditional favorites with easy to follow, delicious dishes like Lemon Carrots with Dill, Rosemary Roasted Green Beans, and Asiago Chive Mashed Potatoes from the Toast to Tidewater cookbook or try the Sweet Potato Muffins recipe found in Tidewater on the Half Shell. And no holiday table would be complete without tempting, seasonal desserts like Pumpkin Pecan Pie or Pecan Pie with Khalua. Instead of serving pies in the thin aluminum pans in which pre-made crusts usually arrive, try pre-made pie dough usually found either in the frozen or refrigerated section of your favorite grocery store, and use a seasonal ceramic pie plate for an easy, yet elegant presentation. Of course, every Thanksgiving hostess is always in search of yummy ways to serve leftovers after the big meal, so why not try the Smoked Turkey, Apple & Walnut Salad recipe which can also be found in Toast to Tidewater. Happy Thanksgiving!

Helpful Holiday Hint Hosting a large group for Thanksgiving? No room at the dining room table for everyone and not enough dinnerware? This year, try a buffet-style setup for dinner. Throw a tablecloth over a sideboard, card table, or even a sofa table, then serve the turkey and side dishes on mix-matched platters and dishes along with mix-matched plates and flatware for a vintage holiday feel. Local thrift and antique stores are full of great finds to help make your next gathering a beautiful success!

What to Wear for Holiday Gatherings Submitted by Dena Liston As the holiday season approaches, we never seem to have enough hours in the day to complete the endless list of to-dos that comes along with this season of good cheer. Whether it’s shopping or cooking, entertaining or decking the halls, we all have our fair share of checklists. I hope to make your list a little shorter this year by giving you one less thing to think about. I’m offering the following tips on what to wear for holiday gatherings. With the help of our friends at Double Take Consignment Shop in Norfolk and a few of our lovely League members, I have shared a few easy to wear, chic and “thrifty” ensembles that you can wear for whatever holiday affair you are attending this season!

Casual For daytime events (perhaps even outdoor, winter soirees where jeans are acceptable) you can have fun with textures and outerwear. I like to add an unexpected pop of color when dressing in winter/fall neutrals.

Style Guide Continued Business Casual When the office is having a mid-day gathering, you may want to dress up your regular work day wardrobe. Add some color (red is always fun and festive) and/or opt for a dress if you normally wear a suit or separates. If you have a holiday sweater featuring reindeer or a Christmas tree in your closet…burn it!

Emily Webb

Brooks Lively Semi-Formal I know, I know, you’re going to an evening holiday party and the recommended attire is “cocktail” so you’re taking your LBD (little black dress) to the cleaners. Be prepared to look like everyone else in the room – swathed in black. How about a little gray dress instead? Animal prints are also very “in” right now so take advantage.

13

Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

Formal Don’t use your curves as an excuse to wear black (see my note under “semi-formal”). I love metallic tones for a formal event and done in the right material (something stiff, not clingy), it can be flattering and show-stopping.

Kudos to... Our Members of the Month: Thank you to the Communications Team headed by Katie Cullipher, the Communications VP! She organized the video that ran at the September GMM and is now on the website; the “once a week” email; and the three editions of Tideings. I’m sure Katie would agree that she couldn’t do any of these things without her team of Dena Liston, Danielle Musick and Haley Landers. Dena, the TIDEings Manager has been instrumental in collecting the articles for TIDEings and keeping the submissions on a timely basis. Danielle, the Assistant Communications VP and Katie’s right hand woman has distributed all of the pertinent League information weekly so we are not inundated with emails. Haley, the Web Liaison, has worked diligently to clean up the website so all of the data is correct. The JLNVB is more informed and organized thanks to you ladies. We appreciate it!

Thank you Maryann McChesney! Maryann took the initiative to request a grant from Cox Communications which resulted in $2,000 for the JLNVB. Cullen Speckhart on the recent birth of her daughter. Avery Grace Speckhart (6 lbs, 10 oz, 19.25 inches long) was born on September 30, 2012.
