President’s Message Fall is such an exciting time of year with many new beginnings and fresh starts. There will be a welcome change in the weather, weekends filled with football games and oyster roasts, and of course, kids back to school. JLNVB also welcomes fall with a renewed excitement and purpose. Each year, football teams spend their summers in practice, kids are at home completing their summer reading lists and our League leaders are busy planning for the upcoming year. What is the common thread here? They all want to be successful and leave a legacy of greatness behind. “No great leaders know what their legacy will be. It is something that happens along the way because they are doing something that matters.” The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) has a rich history and its legacy continues to grow. We are an organization of over 155,000 women in almost 300 communities and four countries. For over 100 years, Junior League members have transformed the communities in which they live. The Junior League has a list of distinguished sustaining members such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Sandra Day O’Connor, Shirley Temple Black, Laura Bush, Nancy Reagan, and Julia Child, but equally impressive is what OUR members do on a daily basis. The JLNVB has never ridden on the coattails of our past success. Rather, we build upon our great history and legacy that was left from the leaders and members that preceded us. This year’s leaders are no different. Traditionally, the summer months are noted as “League downtime;” however, our Board members and committee chairs have been diligently working throughout the summer to plan for the 2012-2013 year by organizing impactful training, meaningful volunteer opportunities, and some fun and exciting social events. We have already had a successful “Stuff the Bus” program partnering with WAVY where we were able to help collect the much needed school supplies for underprivileged children throughout Hampton Roads. Amidst all this activity, we also hosted numerous summer recruitment events.

Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

We have an outstanding team of women in our League, and with this year’s Provisional class, we are set to be even stronger! These are merely the accomplishments of the summer months. In just the last year alone, we have partnered with over 17 individual organizations. Our legacy in Hampton Roads runs deep. There is power in our legacy. Whether you are a Sustainer, an Active member or a Provisional, you are part of this legacy and the “army” that can and will create change in our community. Together, we can extend our reach beyond Hampton Roads to help change our world. What’s our secret weapon? With so many worthwhile charitable organizations in our community, what clearly sets JLNVB apart is its membership. We are ambitious. We think BIG. We are trailblazers. Without you, our dedicated members, this tradition of excellence and the ability to make such an impact in our communities, our amazing LEGACY would not exist. I look forward to a fantastic 2012-2013 League year and all that lies ahead. What legacy will we leave behind? Best Wishes,

Melissa Steadman 2012-2013 President Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc.

It’s All About Placement What do Advisors and Mentors DO? Every active member of the JLNVB has a Placement Advisor, Transition Mentor, or Provisional Mentor. Their primary function is to serve as a member’s liaison for any League-related issue. • • • •

Need an introduction to other JLNVB members? Advisors/Mentors are in contact with many members; ask them to introduce you. Have a question about how the organization “works?” Ask your Advisor/Mentor to explain the JLNVB structure. If you have a fabulous idea – for a fundraiser, volunteer event, social event, etc. – your Advisor/Mentor is the person to help you navigate the channels to have your idea presented. If you require any type of status change, your Advisor/Mentor is the person to help you determine the appropriate status and to guide you through the process. (Status levels: Active, Active-Gold, Transfer In, Leave of Absence, Non-Resident Active, Transfer Out, Sustainer) If you are having any issues within the JLNVB – difficulty meeting obligations, placement concerns, etc. – your Advisor/Mentor is there to help you find a resolution.

Your Placement Advisor, Transition Mentor, or Provisional Mentor is your first line of communication with the JLNVB. In addition to helping their Advisees address their League issues and questions, Advisors/ Mentors are crucial in setting a stage that will allow members to have a satisfactory and gratifying League experiences. They serve as mentors to their Advisees. Placement Advisors, Transition Advisors, and Provisional Mentors review their Advisee’s progress throughout the year to make certain they are engaged and fulfilling their JLNVB obligations. And, they work with their Advisees to help find all the available alternatives for meeting League requirements, thus ensuring those obligations can be fulfilled. Advisors/Mentors also help match members with placements through League career guidance, which will advance the member’s JLNVB goals. Advisors/Mentors conduct interviews with their Advisees that help the Placement and Nominating Committees understand the work a member has done during their League career (both in the JLNVB and in other Leagues), a member’s professional work and training, and the League goals of the member. All of the duties of the Placement Advisor, Transition Mentor, and Provisional Mentor serve the purpose of making certain that the JLNVB has a robust, energetic, and excited membership. Throughout the year, you should periodically hear from your Advisor/Mentor. And, you should always feel free to contact your Advisor/Mentor with League related questions, concerns, and brilliant, new ideas. Be sure to look for Placement Committee, Transition Committee, and Provisional Committee members at each GMM and let us know what we can do for you! • • •

Placement Committee Chair: Hanan Mitry Provisional Committee Chair: Betsy Glover Transition Committee Chair: Kathy Gadams

If you are not sure who your Advisor is, please check your record on www.jlnvb.org. If there is anything that we can do to help you, please do not hesitate to contact us at PlacementChair.jlnvb@gmail.com.

Stuff the Bus We partner with WAVY TV 10’s Operation School Supplies annually to help collect items from various drop-off sites around Hampton Roads. In August, we participated again in the annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ events held at Office Depot locations in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. School supplies collected during these events are donated to local schools in Hampton Roads to be distributed to children in need. In 2011, over 25,000 supplies were collected for area students. Every child should be prepared to start the school year and we’re honored to be a part of this wonderful program each year.

From the Kitchen This month we are featuring, Fettuccine Carbonara, a simple and tasty dish that can be found in “Tidewater on the Halfshell,” page 81. This recipe serves 8 and many of us already have the ingredients needed in the pantry! • 1 pound bacon • 1 pound hot fettuccine, slightly undercooked and drained • 4 Tsp butter, silvered • 3 cups heavy cream • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese • Pepper • 4 egg yolks Cut Bacon into 1-inch pieces and fry in large skillet until firm, but not crisp. Pour off all but 3 Tablespoons of drippings. Add fettuccine and butter bits to skillet. Toss until butter begins to melt. Add about 2 1/2 cups of cream and toss again. When Cream begins to bubble, add cheese and stir to distribute evenly. Continue tossing until sauce begins to thicken. Add generous grind of pepper. Beat egg yolks with remaining cream and pour into skillet. Toss to coat evenly. Remove from heat and serve immediately.

Training Opportunities As always, we are looking for creative ways to “train” our members. Feedback from last year’s member survey brought forward two evaluations: Members like to learn from special guest trainers at meetings and they also enjoyed opportunities to seek training on their own time. WE LISTENED! Once again, this year we will be offering “Webinar Wednesdays” through AJLI. These fantastic webinars are offered the second Wednesday of each month at 1:00p.m. (EST) by logging in to www. ajli.org. The first session is titled “My Civic Leadership Journey: From the Junior League to the JFK Profile in Courage Award” featuring Elizabeth Redenbaugh and will be held on September 12, 2012. To receive your one-hour training credit, sign up at www.jlnvb.org and register for the webinar at www.ajli.org/?nd=webinarwed. We are excited to offer another opportunity from AJLI with their new self-paced courses. Each of these four courses is a one-hour module with interactive learning and each consists of a number of 10-15 minute lessons that you can complete all at once or individually as you find time. At the end of the class, print out the completion certificate and turn it in to Brooks Lively, Leadership Initiatives Director, at any General Membership Meeting. The course currently being offered is “Building Leaders and Blazing Trails: Changing the world with the Junior League.” Find it online at www.ajli.org/?nd=selfpaced. Get excited for training at our first General Membership Meeting on September 19. 2012. You will receive one hour of training credit just by attending the GMM. At the meeting, we will have a representative from Ciniva, our website agency, who will share with us how to use social media to enhance the JLNVB brand. Bring your smart phones and iPads and get ready for 20 minutes of interactive learning! We want to hear from you. Please contact Brooks Lively, Leadership Initiatives Director, at bglively@hotmail.com to share your training ideas and needs.
