Planting the seeds for the future

Angel: As a second generation builder working in stucco for 10 years alongside my father, this transition has given me new love for building in general.

What most interests you about hemp and hemp building and hemp growing and why?

Angel: The most interesting part about building with hemp is watching the process break down from stalk to hurd. From being able to plant those first couple of seeds to being able to build an exterior/interior wall is humbling. Arturo: Growing hemp, amazing for the environment and I love farming! Building with hemp, renewable fireproof carbon negative building material! What interests me the most is the application of hempcrete and hempsulation in greener building in the housing industry in the US.

What was a win for your company in the past year?

Angel: A win for our company this last year was being able to learn from others in this amazing industry. Being trained by Mattie Mead and gaining Hempitecture knowledge really helped us find where we belong in the hemp industry.

Angel Romero Jr [L] is the co-founder and lead builder for StucGoCrete. Arturo Amaro Jr. [R] is co-founder, VP, builder, supply chain coordinator.

Arturo: Weather and fire resistance testing on small building models built from hemp processed from our own home grown crop.

What is something about hemp building/construction/ processing you didn’t know a year ago?

Angel: A year ago today I didn’t know anything about how to grow hemp, let alone why we should grow it so intensely. Now I am an advocate for everything hemp related and have made hemp a part of my everyday life. Arturo: How great and supportive not just the local community usually is of builds but the support from the surrounding hemp community is greatly reassuring and supportive of positive movements in the industry.

“Being trained by Mattie Mead and gaining Hempitecture knowledge really helped us find where we belong in the hemp industry.”

What challenges does the hemp building industry face that it must overcome in the next five years?

Angel: Personally I feel over the next few years the hemp industry will have to find rules and regulations to be able to teach many more young builders the correct fundamentals to help build more eco-friendly homes. Finding the happy medium between your conventional building and building with hemp will be a fun challenge we will overcome as an industry.
