During this project we worked on Stigma, essay of sociologist Erving Goffman, written in 1963. The book is about the idea of stigma and what it is like to be a stigmatized person. It's a look into the world of people considered abnormal by society. Stigmatized people don't have full social acceptance and are costantly striving to adjust their social identities for example mental patients, physically deformed people, drug addicts and prostitutes. Goffman analyzes people's feeling about themselves and their relationships to “normal” people. There are different strategies that stigmatized individuals Reading and use to deal with the rejection of others and the complex images of themselves that they project discussing the to others. The book identifies three types of book “Stigma: stigma: stigma of character traits, physical Notes on the stigma and stigma of group identity. Stgmatized Management of people can be discredited (the others know about their stigma) or discreditable (they try to Spoiled Identity” hide it). Moreover Goffman discusses a number of responses that stigmatized people can take; for example they can use their stigma as an excuse for their lack of success, they can make special efforts to compensate for their stigma, they can see their problem as a learning experience or they can use it to criticize “normals”. Important for stigmatized people is also a self-help group. Another aspect described by Goffman is the role of “stigma symbols”, which are a part of information control. Stigmatized people, in fact, often use symbols as “disidentifiers” in order to try to pass as a “normal”. Linda Savi

MOVIES ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESSES & DISORDERS Luckily, a lot of newer movies (and some older ones too!) have made an effort to “get it right” and show mental illness in a realistic and humanizing way. These movies can evoke some powerful responses in viewers who may see their own struggles accurately represented on screen for the first time. With recommendations from a mental health community, we can give the names of seven movies portraying mental illness. 1. “Silver Linings Playbook”
2. “Frozen”
5. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”
3. “Black Swan”
4. “Girl, Interrupted”
6. “Donnie Darko”
7. “Perks of Being a Wallflower”

MENTAL ILLNESSES AWARENESS MONTH! May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and organizations across the nation will be drawing attention to the various—and often-surprising—way mental illness affects people’s lives. This May, a number of new research findings highlight the need for increased understanding of, empathy for, and respect of people facing mental health issues. Consider the following. Mental Illness is ‘Normal’: People with mental health issues have long felt that they are different from others. Indeed, discussions of mental illness tend to speak about “people with mental illness” as if they are a foreign group few of us ever encounter. The reality is that mental illness is so common—so common, in fact, that a recent study claims that it’s a life unmarred by mental illness that’s the real anomaly. According to the study, which followed people ages 11-38 and tracked their mental health, a mere 17% avoided mental illness. Forty-one percent had a mental health condition that lasted for many years. Forty-two percent had a short-lived mental illness. This suggests that, sooner or later, mental illness becomes an issue for most people. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/when-your-adult-child-breaks-yourheart/201705/mental-health-awareness-month

Stigma and discrimination can also worsen someone's mental health problems, and delay or impede their getting help and treatment, and their recovery. Social isolation, poor housing, unemployment and poverty are all linked to mental ill health. So stigma and discrimination can trap people in a cycle of illness.

Mental illnesses Currently, mental illnesses are an unavoidable reality and the number of those affected has been growing substantially in developed countries in all ages. For

In this way, patients are sometimes subject to exclusion due to the lack of understanding of society. Therefore, some individuals with mental illnesses prefer to hide their problem so as not to be discriminated against or to lose their job. In this way, although mental illnesses are currently recognized and treated as any pathology, there is some prejudice and in this way we believe that this prejudice will disappear with the evolution of mentalities and modern societies. Schizophrenia Our group focused on Schizophrenia, which is a mental disease in some cases characterized by out-of-normal social behavior and inability to distinguish what is real or not. Some of the initial symptoms are social isolation hostility or mistrust, neglect of hygiene habits, decreased emotional expression, among other. Among the most common symptoms are delirium, confused or unclear thoughts, auditory hallucinations, decreased social interaction and lack of motivation. People with schizophrenia usually have other mental health problems, such as anxiety disorders, depression or disturb ancestry related to the consumption of harmful substances. The treatment for schizophrenia can be divided into four types, the most important being medication and psychological counseling. There is still no examination capable of detecting the presence of schizophrenia in someone, however, some tests can be done to eliminate suspicions of other diseases that have similar symptoms in their development process. There is no way to prevent schizophrenia or any other mental disorder. Nonetheless, it is worth mentioning that the earlier the disease is diagnosed, the better the treatment and the greater the control of symptoms. It is still unclear what are the real causes for schizophrenia but scientists and researches believe that some factor may have a bearing on, or at least influence the development of the disease in someone. Illness Our perspective of mental illness has completely changed throughout this project. Before, we didn’t really thought about this subject, but in the last month we have realized that Mental Illnesses have a lot of stigma and discrimination associated to it. There are a lot of myths regarding this theme, but do you know some of them?
Worldwide, 165 million people are affected by a mental disorder annually and, in Portugal, almost 1 in 5 portugueses will have it throughout there lives.
This idea is mostly transmited by social media but lots of studies demonstrate that the percentage of agressive people with mental desorders isn’t superior of the general population.
Mental illnesses don’t depend of the personality and they can affect anyone, as it can have organic, psycological and social causes.
