Letter from the Editor years – it just depends on where you are in your luck cycle. If you methodically fix what’s wrong and enhance what’s right, you can make any year better for you personally. We bring you a Paht Chee Bonanza to illustrate this. Of the 12 Chinese Zodiac signs, Horse-born people suffer the most number of afflictions in 2017, not least the Five Yellow, whose malignant energies get enhanced by the Fire of the South sector. Phillip Lim’s timely article looks at six famous Horse-born personalities and analyzes their fortunes - but note that not all Horse-born share the same fate; other factors can be just as important. Whenever you forecast your luck, it is thus invaluable to also look at your own Paht Chee chart. Another point to note when using feng shui is to not get so caught up in the formulas that you forget the big picture. Form school and symbolic feng shui are often as or even more important than studying the many numerological charts. Hanni Lim’s article on Samsung’s head office in Silicon Valley makes this staggeringly clear. While feng shui is an incredibly rich and diverse science, before you peel back the layers, remember that what is most important is sometimes more obvious than you think.
LOOKING FOR LOVE
C
This issue we bring you a Love Special because February is also a month of love. The Western world celebrates Valentine’s on 14th Feb, while Chap Goh Meh – which some call the Chinese Valentine’s Day – falls on Feb 11th. This is the day of the first full moon of the New Year; it is a night to cement one’s fortunes for the year, especially when it comes to love. There are all kinds of rituals the Chinese always practise on this night, which we share in this issue.
When I say good or bad news - that is speaking relatively; because when you learn feng shui and apply it to your situation, you are always aiming to improve your luck – so it is immaterial whether you are starting from a low base or a higher base, because the goal is the same. The way we like to approach our feng shui is very systematic… first fixing all the afflictions, then magnifying all the good fortune indications. Every year has both good and bad, and everyone goes through good and bad
Whether you are looking for new love, or looking to revive love that has lost its luster over the years, there are specific methods you can use. If there’s one thing you need if romance is important to you, it is a magic mirror. Pick one that you have affinity with and use it as your personal tool to make some real magic in your life. Yes we believe in magic, but after all, what is magic but influencing outcomes through means not immediately explicable. To this end, we are convinced that David Copperfield - whom we got to watch in Las Vegas recently - is not merely an illusionist but possibly a magician of the highest caliber. After all these years he is still at the top of his game, entertaining his audience with his incredible feats; whether you consider those feats illusion or magic is simply a point of view.
hinese New Year comes early this year, in January; but February is the month of the Spring when the official day of the Lap Chun comes around. Feb 4th is the start of the Chinese Solar Calendar year, and Flying Star adheres to this calculation of time; this is when the energies that determine the year’s destiny trends really start to make their switch, which can be good or bad news. How these changes affect you personally depend on several factors – mainly your animal sign, your personal Paht Chee and the abodes in which you spend most of your time – i.e. your home and your office.

Letter from the Editor The Grand Canyon
Another entertainer not to be missed is Elton John, who is back in residency at Caesar’s Palace this January performing The Million Dollar Piano. The opening show just after Christmas opened to a full house, and was a particular treat because he played all his hit songs; and he has been around long enough for him to have a long, long list of hit songs – in fact too long for him to play them all! This has been a great year for movies and TV, and the big winner at the Golden Globes was La La Land, gaining accolades for its director Damien Chazelle and its two leads Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, as well as picking up awards for its music and screenplay. Interestingly, these three main players in this movie form the astrological triangle of Competitors, putting them on great form for the upcoming Oscars this February. Another winner at the Globes was the fabulous Claire Foy, who won for her turn as Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix drama The Crown, a hot new series that has refocused the spotlight on the British monarchy. Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 90th birthday last year; she has also become the longest serving monarch on the British throne. 2017 however brings some danger in terms of her Paht Chee. We take a look at both her and Prince Charles’ charts to make some predictions.

We also feature two fabulous personalities this issue – Amber Chia, Malaysia’s first model to go truly international - Dato Kee Hua Chee uncovers this gorgeous lady’s very colourful life story; while over in the UK, Helen Oon introduces us to Kenneth Soh, make-up artist to the stars. With feng shui applications, Lillian Too reminds us to be bold when it comes to putting remedies and activators in place. While subtlety has its plus points, sometimes, so does audacity. She revisits the 2017 chart to identify where you need to put more attention when updating your feng shui this year. The New Year is also an important time to refresh your home energies and Chris Yeo shares some ideas for updating your walls to renew the chi energies within your home. And while spring-cleaning the home is important, so is regular mental spring-cleaning, as our lifestyle guru Shahreen Kamaluddin reminds us in her piece on Letting Go. Happy Chap Goh Meh. May we all find every kind of love in this wonderful Spring month of February.

Real life does make for the best television, especially when it portrays royalty that is as regal as the British Royal family! And if I have to name one person for the CROWN’s huge success, it has to be the lovely Claire Foy,
for she captures the essence of the young Queen, the ambience of that period and the tenderness of young responsibility to perfection. own testy husband, the strong-willed PRINCE PHILLIP. Not an easy role to play, especially knowing that watching her will be so many of the players who are still around today, not least the Queen herself. Watching the series I was glued to the television, as the life of the young Queen came to life for me from one episode to the next. If you have not yet watched it, do so! Just for this, it is worthwhile signing up for Netflix!

The CROWN is a big budget production and while there is only a Season 1 currently available, more seasons are on its way, and after this high profile recognition and accolade garnered by its lead actress showing she can indeed carry the show, there will likely be many more seasons to come. The Crown also has excellent supporting players that include the fabulous John Lithgow who plays Churchill and Matt Smith who plays Prince Phillip. But it is Claire that captures our attention as she plays the role with so much understated intensity, and always with a sustained wide-eyed look of firmness that belies her youth
and her petite bearing, that the viewer quickly forgets the story is about a living person, still alive still holding the people of Great Britain and the world in awe. Probably most heartfelt is the way she conveys the Queen’s relationship with Prince Phillip and watching them on the screen, we begin to understand the great sacrifices the Queen must have had to make in terms of her feelings, and the personal risks she took in terms of her relationship with her husband. It is a huge achievement for them both that they have stayed so true to each other until today! When Prince Phillip asks, “I beg you to make an exception” for him not to have to kneel before her the Queen, because she is “his wife”; she refuses, pointedly explaining it is to the Crown that he kneels, and not to her. I loved the way she endured having to say this to him. On another occasion she says, “For better or for worse, the Crown has landed on my head”. A graduate of the Oxford School of Drama, Claire Foy has had previous starring roles in Netflix blockbusters and major TV dramas under her belt

before The Crown. She has largely avoided the glare of the limelight and the allure of Los Angeles - for much of her career, although she has been playing leading TV roles since 2011. Many have said that landing the incredible role of the young Queen Elizabeth in the NETFLIX big-budget series was quite a coup, and like it or not, it has brought her squarely to the attention of Hollywood. Claire Foy admits to being an ‘attention seeker’ and had originally dreamt of being a ballerina, but turned to acting after studying drama and film at Liverpool John Moores University. She did a postgraduate course at the Oxford School of Drama and in her mid-twenties, she moved to London where, after a string of theatre roles, she landed her first major TV role in 2008 in BBC’s drama Little Dorrit. Two years later, she starred in the revival of Upstairs, Downstairs. Later, she took on the eye-catching role of Anne Boleyn in the 2015 BBC adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf
Hall and immediately following that came her current crowning glory, excuse the pun… playing Queen Elizabeth and now winning the Golden Globe! Despite having avoided being a celebrity through her career, Claire Foy was the epitome of admirable poise when she wore a stunning
bespoke Erdem gown to pick up her award for Best Actress in a TV Series. She has definitely made the transition from fledgling star to being the toast of Hollywood. She is happily married to fellow actor Stephen Campbell Moore, and the pair has a daughter who turns two in March.

WILL PRINCE CHARLES BECOME BRITAIN’S NEW KING By HANNI LIM
BY THE END OF 2017?
O
ver the past few months, gossip news columns around the world have been busy obsessing over the budding romance unfolding between Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markel. But while the paparazzi networks put their energies towards hunting down romantic pictures of the new royal couple, other more serious news channels are busy making preparations for a potentially bigger headline that could play out this year: the Queen’s impending demise or stepping down due to ill health, following upon which comes the potential enthronement of King Charles! Will this occur in 2017? We have seen some discreet speculation and there is definitely some kind of arrangement underway in case there is a royal funeral, and following that a royal succession and coronation. Much of the speculation comes from news of the Queen’s
14
illness; she has not had a public engagement now for well over a month. The over-zealous media reacts quickly to announcements that Her Majesty has not been well. The official stance is that she is suffering from a “nasty cold” that started during the Christmas holidays. Could the Queen be much more fragile than the Court officials are letting on? All this speculation has prompted us to take a serious look at her Destiny Chart and Luck Pillars. Sadly, the Queen’s Paht Chee and various birth charts indicate a severe weakness of body health; we see that the prospect of Her Majesty outlasting the Year of the Rooster does not look promising.
2016 WAS A BIG OBSTACLE YEAR for the QUEEN Many fortune tellers had predicted that the Queen might not outlive
2016. This was because milestone ages i.e. 70th, 80th, 90th birthdays are always regarded by astrologers as dangerous years for all older people. In fact, the Chinese have a tradition of not over-celebrating the upper milestone ages at all, and even if we do, we tend to “trick” the Gods and life-force-stealing spirits into thinking we have already crossed the age by adding one or two years over our actual age. The Queen’s Paht Chee chart and the astrological forces of time feng shui are showing real indications that the end of her life might well be near, and barring unforeseen intervention by some higher purpose, the Queen could well leave us this year. She is a Fire Tiger born in spring of 1926. In 2016 which was a Monkey year, all Tigers had to deal with some really unpleasant astrological hurdles, and the Queen was no exception. Firstly, being a Tiger put her in direct confrontation with the Grand Duke
F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 7 | w w w. f s w m a g . c o m | F E N G S H U I W O R L D
of the Monkey Year and secondly, the Queen was also badly afflicted by the great misfortune star known as the Five Yellow that flew into the astrological sector of the Tiger, bringing weakness of chi affecting the Queen’s health and vitality. In addition, the Queen’s life essence was very weak; her element luck profile for 2016 showed a very low life force and spirit essence in 2016, and her health rating as a Fire Tiger was also very low. Thus the Monkey Year could not have been a stable one for the Queen, especially in terms of her health, and we note that since her birthday last year, there have been very few public appearances or news coverage about her. She has remained very low-key for the most part of the Monkey year last year. Thanks to her good lung ta rating, Her Majesty was able make it past her 90th Birthday and get through 2016. But note that at the time of writing this, the Monkey Year is NOT yet over. The lunar Rooster Year does not begin until January 28th, and the solar Rooster Year does not start till Feb 4th. Given that Her Majesty has been suffering a debilitating illness since 21st December (Winter Solstice) this is a clear sign her health is not likely to improve much this coming year. And even if she is able to make it past Chinese New Year, her luck profile for the Rooster Year, combined with forces coming into play within her chart tells us that her life force will continue to weaken significantly.
The Queen’s Paht Chee chart and the astrological forces of time feng shui are showing real indications that the end of her life might well be near, and barring unforeseen intervention by some higher purpose, the Queen could well leave us this year. this can mean loss of possessions, reputation or life force being taken or stolen by yin spirits. No doubt the Queen’s private astrologers had already foreseen this in her chart, and

CONFRONTING
VERY WEAK IN 2017 We checked her Paht Chee chart and luck profile tables and note that the Fire Tiger’s personal luck sees no improvement at all in the Rooster year. This is the second year in a row that all three luck elements that govern her health and life span – her life force, spirit essence and health - are all very low. Last year, Her Majesty’s good LUNGTA rating was at least able to sustain her through the year, but this year, her lung ta is at a neutral level. Plus she has the Robbery Star from the 24 Mountains, and usually
special prayers were composed by the Church of England in celebration of her 90th Birthday last year. If you are reading this piece now and you have relatives who are Fire Tigers, it is a good idea to arrange for long-life prayers for the elderly Fire Tigers, and perform the “hooking back life force ritual for the younger 31-year old Fire Tiger. In addition to her low luck profile, her destiny chart is also showing that the Queen has now entered the final pillar of her life. We reproduce here her Paht Chee chart, which clearly shows that she has entered into the Yin Earth Sheep Pillar last year in 2016. As her self-element is Strong Yang Metal, entering the Sheep pillar brings too much Earth into her chart, which can endanger her health and position. Luck brought by the Yin Earth Sheep pillar places great strain on her wellbeing. More significantly, look how the Yin Earth Sheep pillar in her destiny timeline (ten luck pillars) directly clashes with the Yin Earth Ox hour pillar in her natal chart that governs the last quarter of life.

There is a real chance that even if she makes it past Chinese New Year, she is not likely to have the stamina or the energy to carry out all the usual duties expected of a Head of State or Sovereign in the coming months. Our prediction is that many of her duties will have to be passed to Prince Charles, who is her heir and next in the line of succession.

Full Moon day IN FEBRUARY 2017
A day to string up brightly lit lanterns, to invite in dancing lions to entertain the deities and spirits of your home, a day to honour the full moon when it shines brightly in the sky transforming even dust into jewels, a night for young women wanting to find true love and marry to offer bright red oranges to the lady of the moon... Most of all, it is a night to activate your magic mirror capturing the power of the first full moon’s bright glow to bring you prosperity, success, good health and happiness. These rituals take on wonderful luminosity and power when undertaken on the day and night of the first full moon of the lunar calendar, and in 2017, this 15th day of the first lunar month falls on February 11th. This is a night when the more colourful your lanterns are, the more happiness energy flows into your home; and the more fervent your mirror rituals, the more quickly your wishes will manifest for you.

n ancient times in China, this day was celebrated as the Lantern Festival to traditionally end the Chinese New Year period, when the people celebrated the Spring Festival with great festivity and observed a great many rituals. In 2017, the day of the full moon falls on February 11th a very auspicious day which marks the end of all the New Year taboos. It is also the day to take down all the new year decorations, including the flowers and New Year spring blossoms set up to welcome in the new year, especially this year when we have the lap chun.
LIGHTING LANTERNS On this 15th morning, take down the Spring Festival decorations put up to celebrate Chinese New Year and put up brand new lanterns in its place. The lanterns celebrate the beautiful Moon Goddess and calls down the blessings of the God of Heaven. As

It is believed that floating lucky lanterns or sending auspicious lanterns into the night skies lit by the glow of the full moon’s light will bring the actualization of one’s fervent wishes. This can be finding a loved one, conceiving a child, or for prosperity and success. In modern times, heliumfilled balloons are used to send messages to the Moon Goddess on this night of the first full moon. 2017 is the year of the bird, this is an excellent time to display images of birds in all their profusion, and especially to hang lanterns that depict the Phoenix and Dragon together. This image is especially auspicious this year, as it brings the energy of double happiness or hei occasions into homes. To the Chinese, hei occasions mean the household will be blessed with either a wedding, the birth of a new son or daughter who will bring honour and wealth to the family, or a big birthday celebration that honours the family matriarch or patriarch – each event welcoming great good fortune to the household. Sometimes, when luck is at its zenith, the household enjoys all three of these joyous events. The lighting of lanterns on the 15th day originated some 2000 years ago. It has Buddhist origins as it was during the start of the Han Dynasty when the then Emperor Han Ming Di, a devout Buddhist, ordered all temples, households and royal palaces to display brightly-lit lanterns on the evening of the full moon in a show of
respect and making light offerings to the Buddha. This Buddhist custom found favour with the people and eventually became an annual tradition. In time, the day and night came to be celebrated as the Lantern Festival and as the custom of hanging lanterns spread through the length and breadth of China, it took on creative manifestations… And so, lanterns of all shapes and sizes, and containing various affirmations and riddles, were floated along canals and rivers, or sent floating into the skies, and were hung on the eaves of homes and on the branches of large trees. In time, the hanging of lanterns came to be associated with prosperity and success-bringing rituals. All kinds of auspicious words and drawings were written and painted onto the lanterns. These took on the shape of fruits, fish, flowers, birds, animals and even buildings, all of which were deemed to signify the various aspirations of mankind.

Hanging brightly-lit lanterns will also bring excellent luck for young children, as it illuminates their mind, causing them to become motivated in their studies. Lanterns also bring a smooth path for everyone in the home, dispelling all obstacles to success and victory. Women who want marriage or those already married and wishing to become pregnant can walk under a hanging lantern while wishing for a husband or a child. It is believed that floating lucky lanterns or sending auspicious lanterns into the night skies lit by the glow of the full moon’s light will bring the actualization of one’s fervent wishes. DANCING LIONS When the lantern rituals are accompanied by festive dancing lions, and the household eat sweet balls of dough known as tangyuan, the joyous nature of the energies are further enhanced. These rituals end the new year period on a very happy note indeed. Most important of all is to welcome into the home five dancing lions, and if possible, even a dancing dragon to generate auspicious energies. This ensures that the spirits of the home stay happy and will continue to watch over the home, safeguarding the household against bad luck. The loud drumming of the lion-dancing is also believed to clear out all bad energy, replacing it with fresh new energies that spiritually cleanse the home of the previous year’s negativities. To the Chinese, dancing lions coming into the home drive away evil and protect the household against those who would steal from you or harm you. Lion dances are also performed at important events. But during the New Year celebration period, dancing lions also bring good fortune. Lion-dancing requires skilled kung fu performers decked out in colourful lion costumes who execute kung fu moves to the beat of drums, gongs and cymbals. They often jump, roll and perform difficult stunts such as walking on stilts to symbolize successfully overcoming obstacles that may arise through the year. Lion-dancing has become so popular that it is a ritual that has become popular in many countries where there is a noticeable presence of Chinese people. In Malaysia and Singapore, dancing lions are very much a part of the Lunar New Year celebrations.

EATING SWEET TANGYUAN & THROWING ORANGES INTO THE SEA The custom of having tangyuan is a harmony-enhancing ritual, while that of throwing oranges into the sea or river is to attract oneself a mate. Eating the sweet balls usually filled with delicious sweet fillings not only ensures a sweet future for oneself, it also ensures that everything you set out to achieve will have a “sweet ending”. Chinese people believe that the round shape of the balls and their bowls symbolize success and togetherness. Thus, it is an excellent ritual to accompany the auspicious throwing of oranges into the sea to catch oneself a wonderful wife or husband. This ritual of throwing oranges into the sea used to be a popular part of Chap Goh Meh celebrations, especially in Penang, although these days it is rarely carried out. Modern ladies in search of eligible men prefer to go clubbing! This is not surprising, as the custom of throwing tangerines into the sea never came from China. Instead, it was a custom that became popular at the end of the 19th century. In those early days, large crowds would flock to the Penang Esplanade to watch young girls in search of romance actually throwing oranges into the sea. They believed that on the night of Chap Goh Meh, the matchmaker from the moon would bring romance into their lives. These days, the matchmaker is no longer needed, and the tradition of throwing tangerines into the sea has dissipated.

ACTIVATING YOUR MIRRORS BY THE LIGHT OF THE FULL MOON On February 11th 2017, do bring out your small brass mirrors and let the light of the night’s full moon activate the mirrors to actualize all the different aspirations that each signify. The ritual is simple. You start by lightly wiping your mirrors with a soft clean cloth – a small salt solution is recommended to ensure all negative energy is dissolved before bringing the mirror up high in the skies to reflect the light of the moon. Hold the mirror aloft for at least one full minute before bringing it down again, before putting it back into a soft pouch. When you are holding the mirror high to reflect the moon’s light, think of what you wish the mirror to bring you. If you want a particular romance to actualize for you, visualize the person you are in love with smiling at you by the light of the full moon. If there is no one in particular you have in mind but you want marriage, then think of a wedding ceremony actualizing for you. For this aspiration, use a mirror with the Dragon and Phoenix image, and if possible, a Double Happiness sign as well.
If you want career success, or are hoping for a good job position, visualize yourself starting work within one month. Later, after the mirror has been activated, take it with you to job interviews and let it reflect the office you particularly want to join. For this aspiration, use the mirror with the image of the Rat or mongoose as this symbolizes gainful employment and a regular income coming your way. If you want to scholastic success, or you want to get into a particular school or University, then visualize yourself receiving the good news via email or letter. For this aspiration, use the Mirror of Scholastic Success and make sure you look into the mirror after it has been energized by the full moon. For scholastic success, you can repeat this
ritual at each monthly full moon. This will strengthen the actualization of your academic aspirations. If you want prosperity and increased wealth, use the Prosperity Brass Mirrors to absorb the powerful energy of the First full moon of the year. Then reflect into the mirror the image of the city, the head office building of successful companies, and the buildings of successful banks and financial institutions. You can also reflect clean, slowmoving wide rivers, as these are conduits of wealth luck. Use your wealth mirrors often to actualize big wealth luck coming your way. It is recommended that before activating your mirrors, you should offer beautiful and aromatic incense to the enlightened beings of the night skies, to the wisdom protectors and the four direction guardians, and then to the spirits of your home, so that nothing negative gets activated into the mirrors. This is a powerful way of ensuring your mirror energizing rituals will be truly successful!

AMBER CHIA
FROM EMBERS TO AMBER! Amber Chia, Malaysia’s first fully certified supermodel owns Amber Chia Academy, lives in a multi-million ringgit house, commands the highest fees and wears only the star pieces in shows. She was the first Asian to win GUESS? Watches Timeless Beauty contest in Basel in 2004. Her achievements are a mile long, yet she was born into abject poverty! This is her story from Embers to Amber! - by Dato Kee Hua Chee -
26
mber Chia has appeared on over 350 magazine covers, catwalked in 6 continents, starred in 7 movies and is brand ambassador for around 35 brands, but her life is a real rags to riches story. Born in Ipoh, she is third in a family of six. At 2, her family moved to Sekinchan, Selangor, where she had the most wonderful childhood. “ We had a simple, carefree childhood. We were poor, so never missed what we never had!” she recalls. As a poor fisherman with sampan and no engines, her father could not sail far. “Papa’s income was unstable and we often had no money to buy food. In despair, he turned to drinking and gambling, which made matters worse. When he came home drunk, he was abusive and even violent. Once when I was 6, I woke from their shouting and saw Mama falling to the floor, covering her bleeding nose. My heart ached so badly, but all I could do was cry. “One day, a group of men came to our wooden shack and threatened to burn it down with all of us inside. Papa had borrowed money and disappeared without telling us where he went!” Amber would never forget that morning in 1988 when she was 7. “Mama told me to pack and we went to airport with my older brother Hin and younger sisters Lily, May and Pinky. With insufficient money, Mama had to leave behind Lilian with a relative in Sekinchan, as she was 9 and could work to support herself. It was 10 years before we would meet again! “We flew to Tawau, Sabah as Papa wanted to be as far away as possible from creditors in Sekinchan! He was down and out and could only afford to rent a room! Seven of us had to squeeze into one room and the landlord ordered us to remain inside and be quiet. Hunger was our constant companion. But kind-hearted neighbours would give us leftovers and to this day, I pray and wish them happiness, health and long life.”
BAD LUCK CHILD As a child, she was weak and sickly, prone to colds and flu. She sighs, “Worse, my parents took me to a

fortune teller who said my paht chee clashed with theirs and I would be a difficult child to raise. I needed godparents as a ‘substitute’ as I might bring bad luck to my real parents! “My neighbour in Tawau accepted me as a goddaughter before we moved to Sabah. Seeing us so wretched, they suggested I should move in with them so my parents would have one mouth less to feed. I refused but my parents insisted.” Separated from her family, she felt hapless, frustrated and angry. She withdrew into her own silent and lonely world populated by fear and despair. Her lack of confidence was aggravated as she was considered ugly! Giggles Amber, “I was dark-skinned, gangly, under-nourished with no shape or curves. With my thick lips, I was teased like a refugee from Africa! Due to my bad attitude, I was unpopular and no one noticed me in school unless the bullies needed a victim. I was called “Garoupa Lips’, ‘Big Mouth’ and ‘Shapeless Sausage’. I felt so worthless. “I was bottom of my class as teachers thought I was beyond redemption!” During recess she stayed in class as she didn’t have 20 sen to buy mee hoon soup. To satiate hunger pangs, she drank water. One day, some classmates brought a bowl of noodles for her. “I was so happy and gobbled hungrily as they watched and giggled. I wondered why till I saw a dead cockroach in my bowl! I vomited and felt unwelcome and unloved by the world.” At 12, she asked her godparents to send her to live with her real family. “They agreed as they were probably relieved to get rid of me, since I contributed nothing to their family harmony. I assumed Mama would be happy, but was devastated when she scolded me for being ungrateful and wanted to send me back! I wept and begged her let me stay, as I could work. I worked as waitress, cleaner, anything and gave every sen to Mama.”
FORGIVING PAPA “Papa changed from fisherman to fishmonger. Every morning I woke at 5 am and sat behind him on motorbike carrying baskets of fish and shouting for business. We didn’t have a license and would hide in bushes when we saw police. “Once the old motorbike stalled and Papa had to push it to the workshop. He insisted I should go home by bus. I saw Papa perspiring and panting under the hot sun. In that instant, when I saw him suffering, I forgave him for what he did to me in the past.” Slowly things improved as her father saved enough to rent a market stall to trade legally and even moved his family into a small house.

AMBER’S FIRST LOVE “I was an introvert till I met my first love. One day, a familiar looking boy came and asked “Are you Chia Lee Peng?” He was my old schoolmate from Sekinchan who had miraculously gone to live in Tawau! We became close and I started to open up. Once he said “You are good looking, so why do you always cover your face with hair and bend low?” “He showed his closed palm, then opened it. Inside was a hair clip. I didn’t know how to respond, so I did the usual act and lowered my head again. He laughed and said there was no poison in the clip, so I must wear it. Was he joking and poking fun of me? “Back home I clipped my hair to one side and looked into mirror. Instantly, I felt better as I examined my face. Finally, I was convinced I was not THAT ugly! A new Amber was being born!”
FIRST STEP TO MODELLING “In Sabah there was a newspaper section called ‘Tomorrow’s Star’ featuring pretty girls and handsome boys. I sent my photos which got printed! I imagined thousands of people admiring me and became more confident.”
FLEEING MARRIAGE “When I was in Form 2, my boyfriend left for Kuala Lumpur and asked me to wait as he would return after he graduated. “I started work and my boss took a liking to me. He lent money to my parents to buy a house and even paid the airfare to fly my eldest sister to Tawau. He fetched me to and from work, and often had dinner with my family who were so grateful to him. He was 10 years older than me and I felt uneasy. Then he asked my parents for permission to marry me and said he would give me a car. Of course my parents were delighted. I was 17. “I was stunned as I never thought of marrying him. I was only grateful to him. The next morning, I paid RM 300 for a one way ticket to Kuala Lumpur to be with my boyfriend. From Subang
28
I phoned Mama. She scolded me and said I was ungrateful and did not want me as a daughter anymore. I burst into tears and begged for forgiveness, promising I would make so much money I would repay my boss for his kindness. “I enrolled in modelling class. Once I was asked to go to an agency but I had RM 5. I watched the taxi meter and once it reached RM 4.40 I stopped and walked half a mile. I arrived sweating but got the job! I was known as the thick-lipped girl, but now I realised my pouty lips was an asset! These lips sell, baby!”
FOREVER AMBER “I used my name Chia Lee Peng when I started modelling. My agent Andrew said it was so boring, but I couldn’t think of a glamorous name. Then I wore a pendant during a show. I loved it and asked what it was. It was amber of course! I liked the name, so I decided to call myself Amber Chia. “People say your name is closely related to luck. Once I started calling myself Amber Chia, my career took off and I became who I am now! “I flew to Sabah to see my parents, but it was another disaster. Mama and
Papa equated modelling with drinking, smoking, drugs and sleeping around. They said I would end up as second wife or mistress and I would come to a bad end! “Then I had to be interviewed by none other than Kee Hua Chee! I was nervous and my fears were well founded! I couldn’t speak English and he sent me packing, telling me to call him once I could string a sentence together! I was humiliated and furious but I took English lessons, which proved instrumental in winning GUESS? watch competition in Switzerland! “Ever yone said GUESS? would never use a Chinese as an ambassador, but I won! That was in 2004 and offers came flooding in. I accepted all — small, middling, big. I hold my head high now as I worked so hard in my twenties and deserve everything I have!”
PAPA’S APPROVAL “Mama was first to accept my career, but it took years before Papa did. Once Papa visited me in KL to check on me and saw me modelling on stage. After he returned to Sabah, Mama called a week later and said Papa had bought all magazines featuring me, cut out my photos and pasted them on the living room walls! Papa had finally accepted me and my job!” PAPA’S OWN WORDS; “I am sorry for what happened in the past when you were small. You have worked so hard to make everything better and secure a happy future for us. You are a filial daughter and I am proud of you. Ganbatte!”(Japanese for ‘go for it’!) MAMA’S OWN WORDS; “I never thought an ugly duckling can become a supermodel! I feel proud because I delivered you into this world. Thank you for sacrificing so much for me and family but I still say the same old words - take care and sleep early!” The ever charming, friendly and down to earth Amber Chia married her manager Adrian Wong in 2010 and has a son Ashton 7 and hopes to have a daughter soon named Ashley.

LA LA LAND
A Musical whose efficacy creeps up on you - hitting you hardest in the last moments of the film.
BY JENNIFER TOO
W
hat could be more sure-fire than a romance between Ry a n G o s l i n g and Emma Stone, two of Hollywood’s most bankable lead stars? When you hear them sing and watch them dance to Justin Hurwitz’s unforgettable score, it creates a magical ambience that creeps up on you. LA LA LAND was the big winner at the recent Golden Globes, with 7 wins out of 7 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for its two leads – it now also holds the record for most number of wins at the Globes for a movie. Surely a good predictor of its Oscar prospects come February 26th. Unlike some Award-winning films, its narrative is unpretentious; it is a

breezy, upbeat movie about budding romance and the pursuit of one’s dreams. It is also a very light-hearted movie and this attitude makes it very watchable. Yet this is no regular rom-com, it is so much more. Director Damien Chazelle presents a musical of the kind not seen on the silver screen since the days of West Side Story and My Fair Lady. Its soundtrack is distinctly jazz – its male lead Sebastian played by Ryan Gosling is a passionate jazz pianist who dreams of reviving interest in a dying genre of music by owning his own jazz club, while Mia played by Emma Stone is an aspiring actress who works as a waitress and goes unsuccessfully from audition to audition. But even if you’re no major jazz fan, don’t let this put you off – the movie will seduce you into giving
jazz a chance, the way Sebastian tells Mia in the movie, when she says, “I hate jazz, and he replies incredulously, “That is such a blanket statement.” Indeed! Never say never! The movie opens with the catchy ensemble number “Another Day of Sun”, whose melody is pop enough to get you singing along whether you love jazz or not – it also involves the whole cast singing and dancing on car tops on a chock-a-block LA flyover, something that took two solid days of filming in sweltering 43 degrees Los Angeles summer heat… but they got it right as the awesome scene set just the right playful mood before we are introduced to our romantic leads. But it is the film’s recurrent haunting melody “City of Stars” which also won the movie a Best Song Golden Globe - that will stick in your

head long after you leave the cinema. We first hear the melody on a piano played by Sebastian, when the two first meet. The story then ambles along at a moderate pace, but Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are great stars and they make every lingering moment worthwhile. What is most special about La La Land however is just how original it is. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone sing all of their own songs, and while this robs the soundtrack of an overly polished feel, it is incredibly charming, and its appeal grows on you the more you listen to it. The soundtrack is worth downloading just for Ryan Gosling’s soulful rendition
of the lead song. It will make you love him even more – if that is possible – and it will also make you want to play the piano! More drama than musical, it takes us back to the time when onscreen musicals were also movies, and believable stories you could invest your emotions in. Damien Chazelle puts acting above singing and dancing, and that is precisely what gives this film so much heart. Because this musical was obviously written for the screen, it works because it is not all song and dance. The music compliments the movie rather than dominating it. And afterwards, you have a worthy soundtrack to play on

repeat and sing along to in your car. The base storyline is simple, but its message will hit you in the gut. It is all about pursuing one’s dreams and the trials and tribulations that come with it; yes, Seb and Mia get what they wish for, so there are happy endings all round – but at what price? La La Land is a feel-good movie that will lift your energies and your spirits, but it will also make you cry. As for Oscar glory, its three most significant players make up the Trinity of Competitors. Ryan Gosling is a Monkey, Emma Stone a Dragon and Damien Chazelle a Rat. In this Rooster Year, all three of these animal signs enjoy superlative luck. The Rat enjoys Heaven Luck with the Polaris Star shining bright and also a Big Auspicious, the Dragon enjoys the Multiplying Star, and both Monkey and Dragon have the Small Auspicious. As a group, they reinforce each other’s luck. Astrologically speaking, how much better can it get? And if they repeat their Globes success at the Oscars, it will be well deserved indeed. 31

FEBRUARY’S MUST HAVES All the remedies to subdue the afflictive stars of 2017
MUST REMEMBER to subdue the 5 yellow wu wang, which brings misfortune, sickness, problems and even reversals of fortune that cause suffering and tragedy. In the year of the Fire Rooster, this becomes an extremely powerful afflictive star as it has landed in the SOUTH sector, where it is strongly strengthened by the FIRE energy of the South. Fire produces earth, and the wu wang is an Earth Star. Determine the South sector of your home or living room; then place the Sun and Moon five element pagoda here to suppress the misfortune energies of the wu wang.
1 10 WAYS TO BE
DARING
SHINE BRIGHT LIGHT ON ENHANCERS
Activate the energies of your feng shui enhancers by shining a very bright light on them. Shine light on the wealth trees placed in the East to energize the #8 star and on the Trinity of Horses in the center of the room to bring victory, success and wealth. This is one of the best ways of strengthening these symbolic enhancers.

DISPLAY MORE THAN ONE OF THE CURE OR ENHANCER YOU NEED IN ANY SECTOR
In 2017, the West part of your home is harmed by the number 3 star, which often brings more than just hostile energies. It brings misunderstandings that lead to serious disagreements which can degenerate into legal entanglements and litigation. Place more than one of the Red Eagle remedy in the West. Likewise, it is a great idea to also pl.ace not one but two of the Sun Moon Pagoda of five elements in the South to suppress the wu wang.
4
WEAR MULTIPLE AMULETS
Be daring in the way you put on your amulet accessories and jewellery. These generate powerful radiating energy, attracting good fortune and keeping you protected. In the enhancing of one’s personal feng shui, more is better than less.
5
DRAPE TALISMAN SCARVES ON YOUR FAVOURITE CHAIR
There are so many talisman scarves which we have made through the years, and these work really well worn on the body to energize the neck and heart chakras; but you can also drape these empowering scarves in the family room sofa chairs or living room settee sets for the room to benefit from the empowering sacred symbols and syllables printed on the scarves.
6
CREATE MORE DISPLAY SPACE
It is always beneficial to add surface space to your living room, so there are more display opportunities for the enhancing symbols that activate the auspicious stars of the year. Be bold when it comes to arranging your space, especially at the start of each new year. This is the best time to add at least one new piece of small furniture. This can be a display cabinet, a new side table or even a larger coffee table.
7
CONSTANTLY CREATE YANG CHI
Do this by remembering to move the chi within your living space as frequently as you can. Remember that every object in the home, even though inanimate, possess their own energies, which can get stale and weaken unless they are given strong doses of yang vibrations. This makes them come alive so to speak, and that is when their very presence in the home enhances the luck within.
3
CREATE NOISE NEAR THE REMEDY PLACEMENTS
Turn on the TV or radio. The energies in the home must never be allowed to stagnate, so it is always good to generate soundwaves by allowing music and voices to flood the room. Be daring when activating your home this way; occasionally let the sounds be really loud, because that is the best way to effectively dissipate bad energy!

ARRANGE STICKERS ON WINDOWS
Place our colorful protective stickers on the windows of your home to ensure better security against petty thieves and burglars. Those living in high-rise apartments also attract wonderful energies from the elevated atmosphere. Sacred stickers radiate blessing vibrations around the home.

9
STICK SUTRAS ON YOUR WALL
A daring new way to decorate your home is to stick powerful sutras on the walls of the home. There is wonderful energy associated with the sacred syllables and dharanis so that not only are they decorative, they also imbue the walls of the home with empowering vibrations.
10
BRING IN THE PLANTS
Add new greens into the living area of the home. You will be surprised how uplifting this can be, especially if these come in the form of live plants that increase the oxygen level in the room. Some of the auspicious plants you may want to consider are the Kuan Yin indoor bamboos or the fabulous iron plant – place these in the East and SE or in the corners of the room to add some wonderful Wood energy. Wood element energy brings creativity and enhances the intellectual capabilities of those living in the home, making it especially beneficial in homes with schoolgoing children.
Peacocks
FOR GREATER RECOGNITION A pair of Peacocks can do wonders to increase your personal power, confidence and reputation in the work place. The peacock with peonies boosts good relationships and harmony. The second peacock sits on a bed of yellow flowers to increase prosperity & income luck.

ELTON JOHN
I` 1LUUPMLY ;VV
performs THE MILLION DOLLAR PIANO
WATCHING ELTON JOHN LIVE IS ANOTHER EXPERIENCE ALTOGETHER… HE IS AMAZING!
There is no question. Elton John is definitely one of the Greats of the Entertainment industry, right up there with legends such as the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Not only is he a mega-talented award-winning and sell-out songwriter and singer, he is a Performer of megastar stature. Few can command ticket prices in the thousands of dollars and still fill a theatre the size of the Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace, not one night but over many consecutive nights. We were super lucky to catch him on Opening Night of his latest run in Las Vegas, on 28th December just after Christmas. The performance followed the untimely death of his good friend George Michael three days earlier, with whom he sang “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”. At the concert, there was barely a dry eye in the house when Elton sang this song to honour his friend, while a giant portrait of George Michael was beamed up on probably the largest screen found on any stage. 36
Elton John in his signature shades greeted his audience, then confessed that while it may seem like he can see everyone, with the blindingly bright lights he couldn’t see beyond the edge of the stage. But he could hear everyone, to which he gained a standing ovation and thundering applause, evidence of how much the audience adored their idol.
“THE MILLION DOLLAR PIANO” was conceived in 2011, when Elton John signed a residency at Caesar’s Palace, following his previously hugely successful show THE RED PIANO which overran from its initial 75 shows to 241 shows over a five-year period. The Million Dollar Piano, unlike other of his prior concerts, was conceived as a sort of history of Elton John music, completely fan-based. Anyone who has grown up listening to Elton John will find every one of the 19 numbers performed through the night a nostalgic reminder of how lucky we are to get to listen to him live, and singing all of his greatest hits.

But precisely because he is playing his biggest hits, this show will appeal not just to his hardcore fans but to really anyone at all. My 12-year-old son Jack, whose exposure to Elton music had so far been limited to his Lion King songs, wanted just as badly as me to catch Elton on this trip to Las Vegas and we both enjoyed the show so so much. While Jack’s generation listens more to rap and hip hop ala Macklemore and Jay Z, Jack – an avid pianist – was drawn to the fact that Elton would be playing on a million-dollar piano. He wanted to see what a million-dollar piano was like. Elton John answered his question during the show, saying that the piano indeed cost a million dollars, and probably more – “good pianos don’t come cheap” – taking a full four years to build. It features 68 LED screens that change colours to match the equally impressive backdrop, a giant TV screen that spans across the width of the stage. Said Elton, “This piano is amazing! When I get a bit tired, I can open the lid and there are even fish swimming in the aquarium built within!” He was joking of course, but the piano itself was as much a superstar of the incredibly psychedelic show. Designed by the 27-year-old industrial designer Akie Hinokio for Yamaha, it highlighted the fact that not only can Elton John sing, boy can he play the piano!
CLASSICAL MUSIC ROOTS Elton despite his super stardom, is humble about his piano playing, saying “Look at my fingers. I have what I call chipolata sausage fingers. Short and thick, not naturally graceful. I can’t easily play an octave.” This show highlights this other facet of Elton John, and reminds us that not only is Elton a legendary singer, he is also an outstanding pianist, trained at the famed Royal Academy of Music in London, having been offered a full scholarship to the world-renowned Conservatoire at the age of 11. During his days there, he played Chopin and Bach just like any other classical pianist, but very quickly diversified to write his own catchy and enduring melodies, together with lyricist Bernie Taupin, whom he has worked with since the beginning of his career, when both were still teenagers. He has since been back to the Academy to play
The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, packed full for Elton’s show, is one of the biggest theatres in the world, seating 4200, with excellent acoustics. The brilliant sound, loud enough to be dramatic, but not so loud as to be jarring unlike your typical rock concert, made this one of the best musical performances I have ever watched live. Not just his voice but even Elton’s solo piano pieces – where the rest of his band fall silent – sees every sound from his one-of-a-kind instrument project crisply throughout the auditorium.
with the school’s Orchestra made up of its students, and performed charity concerts to raise money to fund full scholarships to aspiring musicians talented enough to make it there but without the means to do so. Elton’s band comprises longtime collaborators – drummer Nigel Olsson is a member of the original Elton John band in 1969, guitarist Davey Johnstone joined in 1971 and is also Musical Director, while bassist Matt Bissonette, percussionist John Mahon and keyboardist Kim Bullard make up the rest of the band. Also on stage with him was Ray Cooper, a superstar percussionist who has played with almost everyone of note in the industry, and he too has worked with Elton on numerous occasions. The longevity of his friendships and collaborations tells us what a great guy Elton John must be that he inspires this kind of loyalty.
NOTHING QUITE LIKE VEGAS There’s nothing quite like watching Elton John live in Las Vegas, the Capital of Showbiz, where people expect more than a performance ... here everyone expects to be truly

entertained. This is the city of the Greats – Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Jr – and to quote Elton himself, “If you want to be a part of Vegas folklore, you have to give the best that you can possibly give.” Elton John and his team more than delivered on all counts, and the two-hour show flew by. After his grand finale when the hall filled with sparkling gold confetti, we were so sad the show was over; then Elton stepped back to the piano to encore with Circle of Life, his soaring anthem with lyrics so fitting to greet in a brand new year; “There’s more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done… more to find than can ever be found…” Accompanying the song, the giant screen filled with an animated video of a bird’s eye view of rolling hills and valleys, with a Dragon-like river - the source of life - meandering its way across the landscape, then a flurry of hundreds of birds soaring life-like across the skies that made up the electronic backdrop with ever increasing speed. What better way to usher in the New Year of the Rooster with maximum good energy than to watch one of this Century’s greatest performers amidst such a vivid and vibrant backdrop. Truly unforgettable.

CELEBRATING MY

he 11th January – 111 – is my lucky day! It is also my lucky number of course, as the Taoists believe that the number of your day of birth is also one’s lucky number. This is the day when friends and family make me feel very special indeed, and in recent years, we have celebrated by inviting the Buddhas & Bodhisattvas to come party with us! We get together to offer a feast, literally doing a puja with lots of food, fruits and flowers beautifully laid out before my

Even Jumbo my beautiful Golden joins in the fun. I had decided to be very low-key in observing my birthday this year, as I had already had a very big party the previous year to successfully cross into my Seventies. Celebrating with prayers this way ensures that life stays smooth and health obstacles are successfully averted. When friends come to the home this way they create a great deal of yang energy, which brings good vibrations and enhances the spiritual frequencies of the home.

It is very meritorious indeed to do this, so my friends and I, we do extensive long life prayers that benefit all of us. Our incantations include reciting the mantra of the 8 Medicine Buddhas and chanting the incredible “Sutra of Boundless Life” to Buddha Amityus. And to make the day

We dine on auspicious but simple local birthday foods with the main course of Mee Jawa, my house specialty – here representing the long life noodles so essential to any birthday lunch. Everything is home cooked – the way I like it, as I have a preference for my own home-cooked food cooked to perfection every time by Lita who has been with me for 25 years. The roti canai, a local favourite was from Puan Sri Siew Yong’s kitchen. She also brought amazing drumsticks fish curry – so special because we all know this is the Mauringo fruit, described as coming from the miracle tree that is so excellent health-wise. I have always described living with good feng shui as meaning the household humming along efficiently, so that our life stays smooth with few obstacles that so many households Mee Jawa have to endure.
truly meaningful, we perform also the rites associated with releasing and liberating hundreds of tiny red-coloured fish meant as special food for the giant Arowanas, as well as hundreds of birds sold as food. This ritual adds some years of good health to us, so it is something we always include in the birthday celebrations that we arrange for our friends and family, especially those amongst us who are getting along in age. It is all part of the SPIRITUAL Feng Shui aspects of our cultural practices. Regularly eating together during what the Chinese describe as “hei” events i.e. happiness events such as birthdays, marriages or the birth of a new child – enhances the luck of the home. It drives away bad energies and acts like a chi enrichment exercise. Thus having small dinner parties like this on a regular basis is just so excellent for the home. It is important that none of the family members sulk or throw tantrums. When there is harmony and the third generation play well together, they create pure yang chi! I try to create as many of these family get-togethers as possible. There is no standing on ceremony as we do the event potluck style. Having everyone together generating plenty of laughter is what brings happiness vibes into the home. Nothing creates better feng shui than happy human energies radiating through the home. The moon on that lovely night of 111 almost full but not quite. It showed itself, emerging from behind the clouds as we walked home, beautiful in all its radiant glow, gloriously lighting up the night skies. I saw it as a wonderful ending to a great day. Ordinary, yet also quietly extraordinary.

e ’s k n o w n a s “Magician of the Century” and “King o f Ma g i c” , t i t l e s bestowed on him by the Society of American Magicians, but he boasts more than mere recognition by peers and others. He also holds 11 Guinness World Records, one of them for most number of tickets sold by an entertainer. In his over four decades as a magician, he has sold more than 33 million tickets, and still counting. He has been nominated for 38 Emmy Awards winning an amazing 21 times. Back in 2013, his net worth was estimated by FORBES to be at around US$800 million; no other entertainer has broken that record other than Oprah Winfrey. His shows alone net approximately US$ 64 million a year. He continues to be Las Vegas’ most popular show.
46
Yes, Chris and I took our boys Josh and Jack to see him and they were enthralled! But it is not just his commercial success or the longevity of his career that amazes. When we watched him at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this past Christmas, it was his youthfulness that was most mind-blowing. He looked no older than he did in what must be a good 30 years ago now when I first watched him. That was when David Copperfield stamped his name onto the consciousness of so many of us, performing big time magic walking through the Great Wall of China and levitating above the Grand Canyon of Nevada. Are his magic feats performed on stage and outdoors just illusions, and is there some big secret to his staying so young and energetic? I googled him and discover
he owns 11 private islands in the Bahamas, which he renamed the “Islands of Copperfield Bay”. He proclaims that one of his islands contains the legendary “Fountain of Youth”, a mythical spring talked about across the world for thousands of years, appearing in writings by Herodotus and various versions of the Alexander romance. Could this be the secret of his appearing so incredibly young? And so full of youthful energy? To do three shows in a day is no joke, not even for someone half his age! No wonder his Guinness World Record for most tickets sold has seen no challengers, it seems almost super human to be able to work that hard! And for someone worth so much and who seemingly already has everything, you must surely wonder why he does it! Surely not just for the love of magic, or for performing? Perhaps it is the vow he has made, the price he must pay to be what he is? We picked the 7.00pm showing, and were lucky to get the Meet and Greet tickets, so Joshy my 8 year old got to question him on his show afterwards. David Copperfield is as charming and charismatic offstage as he is onstage, answering all of my son’s questions with enthusiasm and verve, before heading back to his changing room to prepare for his 9.30pm show. I felt he really made the effort to endear himself to my

used to be a die-hard fan of Apple, back when I got my first iPad and iPhone seven years ago in 2010. Back then, Apple tablets and phones were at the top end of the market, and no other manufacturer made phones or tablets quite like them. They really raised the bar in terms of smartphone technology, giving us touch screens that were smooth, sleek and incredibly intuitive to use. Both my 3 year old boy and my 65 year old mother-in-law were able to navigate the iPhone/iPad like a pro within an hour of using the device! But that was 7 years ago and a lot has changed since then. Today, the iPhone is no longer the crème-de-la crème of smartphones or tablets. These days, I’ve happily ditched my iPhone and rely solely on my Samsung Android device. Samsung’s image and position as a global leader in LEDs and digital electronics began shifting upwards over the past decade. In 1996, Samsung Group’s Chairman Lee Kun-Hee, grew frustrated by the company’s The centre of the building features a rombus shaped hollow design that allows massive amounts of CHI to flow into the central courtyard, and natural light to fill all areas of the building. There are no “dead” parts of the building where Yin energy can accumulate. All parts of the building benefit from refreshing doses of Chi on a daily basis.
Samsung’s Semi Conductors building is a dazzling masterpiece by night. It houses Samsung’s semiconductor division as well as user research, marketing and sales departments. Note series of phones, Samsung introduced a new categor y of smartphone—the phablet—which has been widely copied by competitors. Even Apple, who used to be leaders in innovation, came out with the iPad Mini and iPhone Plus series of phones specifically to compete with Samsung’s range of “phablets” that were bigger than phones but smaller than tablets. Samsung tr uly affirmed their commitment to being a design-led company when they invested $300 million in building a large presence within Silicon Valley. with feng shui trigrams, here is a quick explanation. Compass school feng shui has its roots in what we call the Yang Pakua, an eight-sided octagon that represent the eight directions. Each direction is associated with a Trigram (three lines that are either solid or broken) and thus there are eight Trigrams in the feng shui compass. But out of all eight trigrams, only one of them is the LEADER, the FATHER, the PATRIARCH. This is the CHIEN trigram that is drawn with three solid lines stacked atop each other, exactly like what Samsung’s office building looks like from the outside! The Chien Trigram doesn’t just represent leadership; it also signifies the GATEWAY of HEAVEN. This is the Trigram that brings enormous blessings from the divine!

Its awesome design features and incredible facilities will make any employee working elsewhere green with envy. The metal and glass complex boasts a variety of workspaces that allow employees to move to different locations every day, catering to those who might like a different scene of work each day. The large open collaborative spaces are used as meeting points or for work with other members of the company. Outdoor terraces can be used for working in the sunshine or to just to take a break and enjoy the views across L.A. There are also fantastic employee amenities such as a fitness centre, billiards room and nap pod rooms for those who need to take a cat nap or just to recharge away from other people. And there are music listening rooms with coloured lights to inspire those who want a creative boost! The ten-storey campus is wrapped completely with glass and white metal panels, but appears from the outside to have three large slabs sitting on top of each other, with hollow spaces in between. This amazingly clever feature is what has made Samsung LEADERS of the world in electronics technology… because by designing their building this way, they have created a building that appears to look like a massive YANG trigram. SQUARE SHAPE CHANNELS POWERFUL EARTH ELEMENT One of the most powerful feng shui features that Samsung has incorporated into their design is to make the entire building a square. Square buildings are by far the most auspicious, as it means that none of the eight compass sectors are missing. The Square shape also symbolises the element of EARTH, which are associated with two key sectors of the PAKUA that govern knowledge (Northeast) and customer relationships (Southwest). These are two areas of the where Samsung has made a huge name for themselves – as leaders in design as well as customer service!
The Earth Element is also the most powerful element in current time feng shui as it activates the NE/ SW axis of the Period of EIGHT. And what a great coincidence - that the building lies in the NORTHEAST/ SOUTHWEST axis?
FORMIDABLE LANDSCAPE FENG SHUI FROM THE SKY For feng shui experts who understand the importance of landscapes and the shape of FORMS and Structures, there is a lot to be read from studying the aerial view of Samsung’s new building, and how it connects with the other Samsung buildings in the same campus. Here is the aerial view of the entire complex, with the newer square-
shaped Semi Conductor’s building in the Northeast and the remaining complexes that extend downwards towards the Southwest. The shape can be interpreted in two ways, both of which have auspicious connotations: t *G XF WJFX UIF hand of power from the Northeast side, you will note that the shape resembles a KEY, which signifies the key to knowledge, treasures and all things precious! t "OPUIFS JOUFSQSFUBUJPO JT UP view the hand of power from the Southwest side. From this angle, the entire campus is shaped like an AXE which signifies protection against competitors. This is also an excellent connotation for Samsung, giving Samsung a sharp edge against other players. Whichever way we look at it, Samsung’s building enjoys auspicious feng shui connotations. The meanings are all auspicious and also we have to say from observations, rather aggressive as well. The shape of the building is especially powerful – perhaps this is why they have so successfully eaten into the Apple market. What they need to do now is have feng shui that protects them from unfair interference and unfair competition…

SELF ELEMENT IS STRONG YANG WOOD. FAVORABLE ELEMENTS ARE METAL, EARTH AND FIRE. MISSING METAL. Hidden stars: 1. Has the Prospects Star (Tiger) - This is one of those stars that are favourable when your self-element is weak, as it means you have just the right amount of determination and the right attitude. When your selfelement is strong, this star indicates someone who is excessively determined, whose ambitions may exceed what is realistic, thus causing problems. 2. Has the Peach Blossom Star (Horse) - Indicates she is attractive to the opposite sex. The presence of this star means she will never lack for potential suitors. There are always ample opportunities for getting married. But this does not indicate that potential suitors are properly eligible or suitable. 3. Has the Fortune Noble Star (Yang Wood / Tiger) Those with this star will never lack money; money will always come to them whether through their income, investments or via indirect means, such as being given to them by others or by striking the lottery. 4. Has the Star of 5 Virtues (Yang Wood / Tiger) – This indicates someone of great compassion and charity, who can be depended upon. 5. Has the Mountain Marriage Star (Yang Wood / Tiger) – This star brings extreme luck - either very favourable or very unfavourable. In the latter case, there could be obstacles to marriage luck, in that marriage has many stressful moments, and there could be infidelity. 6. Has the Star of the 5 Ghosts (Horse) - This star is said to bring 5 kinds of bad luck - bad luck in business, in accumulating wealth, poor physical health, unstable mental health, as well as general bad luck. However, if there are positive combinations that affect either animal sign that indicates the Star of the 5 Ghosts or the animal
sign in the Day Pillar, and if one’s self-element is weak, then the effects of the 5 Ghosts is reversed and it becomes the 5 Ghosts bringing Wealth. Then you will have a life that enjoys 5 kinds of wealth luck – money from career, from windfalls, from good business, from family, and from good investments. NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF HER CHART: 1. Horse and Rat clash – This clash brings conflict and can seriously affect marriage luck. It also affects her relationships with others, attracting troublesome people, as her self-element is strong. 2. Horse self penalty happens during months, years or during any Horse period. 3. Metal element is missing. 4. Monkey in current luck pillar clashes directly with the Tiger in her Day Pillar, affecting marriage – perhaps that is why she divorced Tom Cruise in June 2012, Year of the Water Dragon. POSITIVE ASPECTS OF HER CHART: 1. Horse and Tiger are allies, which means that a Dog Year is beneficial. 2. Elements of current luck pillar 33 is very beneficial for her, as Metal is missing from her chart. 2017 YEAR OF THE FIRE ROOSTER: 1. Elements of the year are beneficial for her. Second half of year better than first half. 2. Rooster is the side-clash animal of the Horse. She needs Tai Sui cure. 3. Rooster Year brings #5 star as a side-clash; she has 2 units of side 5 yellow. 4. Reducing Energy Star lowers her energy. 5. But Rooster Year activates her Celestial Protector Star, enhancing success luck.

This Wood HORSE Movie Producer who gave us such amazing pictures as THE TERMINATOR and TITANIC will feel the 5 Yellow acutely; must avoid funerals and be careful of health this year, as the summary for the year is quite negative indeed. SELF-ELEMENT IS WEAK YANG WOOD Favourable elements are Water and Wood. Hidden Stars: 1. He has the Peach Blossom Star (Horse) - Indicates he is mighty attractive to the opposite sex. There are many opportunities to get married, but it does not indicate that potential suitors are eligible, available or suitable. 2. Star of Powerful Mentors (Yang Water) – A very auspicious star - like having a “Fairy Godmother” or “Guardian Angel” forever watching over you. When present, it brings someone powerful to help in times of need. The Mentor will usually “work” discreetly but 56
effectively in the background, sometimes without one even knowing. Star of the 5 Ghosts (Monkey) - This star brings 5 kinds of bad luck, BUT when there are positive combinations that affect animal sign that indicates the Star of the 5 Ghosts or animal sign in the Day Pillar, and the self element is weak, then the effects of the 5 Ghosts are reversed and it becomes the 5 Ghosts bringing Wealth. 2 units of the Star of Unhappiness/Loneliness (Dragon, Monkey) – People with this star experience difficulties in marriage and with children. The effects are worse when the charts also contains the Star of Creativity, but is weakened when the Star of Popularity or Star of Charisma is present. Star of Popularity (Yang Water) – This indicates a large network of social peers. It can be lucky or unfortunate depending on the strength of one’s heaven luck and one’s self-element. When self-element is strong, this star brings problems. Yin Gate (Horse) – Indicates he should avoid funerals, save that of close relatives, as the presence of this star means it is easy to offend the spirits of the recently deceased. He must carry protective amulets, but should also avoid attending funerals or visiting people on their deathbeds in hospital. It is even worse when going through a year when personal luck is low, such as this year.
NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF HIS CHART: 1. Horse Self Penalty happens during months, years or during a Horse period. 2. Current luck pillar has the Tiger, which is not beneficial to him. 3. Elements of his luck pillars are not favourable. 4. As he has the Yin Gate, it is not lucky for him to direct or make horror movies. POSITIVE ASPECTS OF CHART: 1. Dragon and Monkey are allies, thus Rat years bring success luck. 2. His chart has all 5 elements, minimizing effect of elements on his luck. 3. Ox years bring Good Fortune Star, which magnifies success – Avatar in 2010 Year of the Ox, Titanic in 1997 Year of the Ox. 4. Horse is an ally of the Tiger in his current luck pillar. 2017 YEAR OF FIRE ROOSTER: 1. Rooster is the secret friend of Dragon in his Day Pillar, bringing him allies luck. 2. Rooster is side clash animal of the Horse, thus he needs Tai Sui cure. 3. Rooster Year has #5 star in Horse sector. He also has 2 units of the side 5 yellow. 4. Star of Reducing Energy lowers his energy. As he is a Wood Horse, this means his health is seriously affected. 5. Elements of the year not favorable. 1. Horse self-penalty – leads to arguments, fights with people and making mistakes easily. 2. Current Luck Pillar - Yang Water / Yang Earth Dragon - Earth is very bad for this weak Wood as there is missing water. So the first part of the luck pillar from age 79 – 84 is favourable for him, but after age 85 with the Earth Dragon, his luck declines. 3. Yin Gate brings bad luck if he attends funerals or unhappy events. POSITIVE ASPECTS OF CHART: He has Success Star and Peach Blossom Star. 2017 YEAR OF FIRE ROOSTER: 1. Rooster is side clash animal of Horse, thus he needs Tai Sui cure. 2. Rooster Year also has the #5 star and he has 2 units of the side 5 yellow. 3. Reducing Energy Star lowers his energy. As he is a Metal Horse, his health is strong, which helps him overcome the Reducing Energy Star. 4. Elements of the year are not favourable for him. 5. Rooster manifests Diplomat Star for him – which means he gains ability to communicate well and to solve problems through successful negotiation. 6. Rooster also brings the 6 Difficulties Star for him. This means he may end up losing money and influence, but he may escape serious problems because of the help he gets from the Diplomat Star.

This Wood HORSE who is also Prime Minister of Japan will suffer moderately from the 5 Yellow affliction in the South, as he has the Emperor Star. The Year energy is neutral but there is a clash with the Rabbit sign. SELF ELEMENT: STRONG YANG METAL Favorable elements are Water, Wood and Fire. No missing elements. Hidden stars: 1. Aggressive Sword Star (Rooster) – Indicates an intense attitude towards life. This star is beneficial because his self-element is weak. Those with this star will often do well as political leaders or trade union bosses. They have the right kind of temperament and the staying power and charisma to succeed as leaders. 2. Star of Popularity (Yang Metal) – Surrounded by a large network of social peers. 3. Star of Unhappiness/Loneliness (Dragon) – Difficulty in marriage and in having children. 4. Star of the 5 Virtues (Yang Metal / Dragon) – People with this star have great compassion. They are stable personalities and can be depended on to get things done. This star indicates someone who does not crave wealth. But with this star, money comes easily. This star is so powerful that even if one’s chart may have clashes or unfortunate stars, any obstacles or problems are overcome quite easily. 5. Emperor Star (Yang Metal / Dragon) – This star indicates someone with a strong character, with great potential to be an effective leader. 6. Yin Gate (Horse) – Those with this star must avoid attending funerals, save that of close relatives.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF HIS CHART: 1. Horse self penalty happens during months, years or during a Horse period. 2. Current luck pillar governed by Rabbit, which is in indirect clash with his Horse. This means that from age 56 – 65, he needs to apply the Tai Sui cure. 3. Rabbit is in direct clash with Rooster in his chart; as such, there is a tendency to suffer from arguments, and back pains. Also, by clashing with Rooster, Rabbit distracts the benefits of the Rooster / Dragon secret friend combination. 4. Rooster and Horse are also in side clash, so as a rule, he needs to appease the Tai Sui every year. POSITIVE ASPECTS OF CHART: 1. Rooster and Dragon are secret friends – bringing allies and supporters. 2. Current luck pillar Yin Earth / Yin Wood Rabbit is favourable. 3. Combination of 5 Virtues Star and Emperor Star gives him a strong edge to overcome problems he may face. 2017 YEAR OF FIRE ROOSTER: 1. Rooster is side clash animal of Horse, thus needs the Tai Sui cure. 2. Rooster Year also has the #5 star and also 2 units of the side 5 yellow. 3. Reducing Energy Star lowers his energy levels. As he is a Wood Horse, this means that his health may be seriously affected. 4. Elements of the year are moderately favourable, as Fire is one of his good elements.

All the Wonderful Traditions of
Chinese New Year... by Lulu Lee
The Reluctant Feng Shui Practitioner
C
hinese New Year is here! How time flies. It feels like it was just yesterday when I was eagerly counting what little Ang Pows I still receive in my ripe old age. I love Chinese New Year. When I was younger it used to feel like a chore, as if being under house arrest. Not being able to hang out with friends and having to wake up early every morning only to dress up like a tomato, and meet and greet other tomatoes whose names you do not remember. But I have grown into loving the family time that defines Chinese New Year, when long lost cousins return from afar and everyone is under one roof, exchanging stories about their year’s exploits and acting far from their true age. I also take pride in preparing the house for the New Year, and feel that same anticipation of the upcoming New Year that I could never understand in my mother. Yes, I have grown into my mother. As New Year approaches, I eagerly
62
embrace her stress levels as the regime sets in to spring-clean every corner of the house and sweep the ceiling with that unwieldy branch of bamboo leaves. To adorn as much of the house as possible with auspicious red and gold decorations and to populate tabletops with glorious red-capped jars of traditional cookies and biscuits. Not forgetting the sugarcane branches that engulf the front entrance, nor the symbolic pineapple on the dining table. Buying as many brightly coloured chrysanthemum plants is a must, as is buying new clothes, new underwear and new pyjamas. And finally, to buy that box of kam, each of which are presented in pairs to the host of any home you visit, only to find later that you need not have bought them at all, because another pair are returned to you before you leave. And then comes the New Year meal. Fish to symbolise abundance, long noodles for long life and something sweet to reflect what the year has in store for you. I rarely eat breakfast and when I do, a toast with good quality butter
is just heavenly. Having to put down a seemingly dinner-time meal first thing in the morning is always a challenge, but with it comes the excitement that the New Year has arrived. I used to dread the unnecessary expense of buying new trousers before Chap Goh Meh, and being told I cannot buy new shoes or cut my hair during the Chinese New Year period. What if a must-have pair of shoes goes on sale? Worse, how can one not wash their hair on New Year’s Day? Surely those whom you greet would appreciate the aroma of freshly-washed hair. And if I stub my toe against a step, no swearing is allowed. A difficult one, because the pain always seems to subside after a good explosion of profanities. There are so many “rules” which I never understood nor appreciated when I was young. Whilst I still do not understand them now, with age comes a sense of pride derived from practising tradition, even if you do not understand why you are doing it. Since taking an interest in Feng Shui, I wondered how the former relates to what I have been taught to do. When I googled Feng Shui for Chinese New Year, I was surprised to find that the list is more or less the same, with slight variations here and there. It turns out we have been inadvertently practising Feng Shui all these years whilst doing what we do, and the coin dropped. The Chinese culture is so rich and diverse you sometimes forget that all the different permutations of practices and tradition come from the same wisdom. It is nice to be reminded of its enormity and how much there is to learn. And when more appropriate to come to this realisation than during Chinese New Year... the only time the office bans you from entering until the auspicious day to start work, leaving you plenty of time to read more about your roots. I have not yet reached the stage of wanting to hang those cheaplooking faux-gold plastic ornaments everywhere, leaning more towards modern contemporary shades of pink instead, but perhaps I shall when old age truly sets in. And I eagerly look forward to it. Gong Xi Fa Cai Xin Nian Kuai Le!

PANGKOR LAUT Paradise Found By HELEN OON

S
parkling like an emerald on the Straits of Malacca off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia lies Pangkor Laut, an exclusive private island that has been lauded as the most luxurious premier resort in Malaysia. Since its opening in 1994, it has been a favourite playground of the rich and famous. The late opera singer, Luciano Pavarotti, officiated at the opening and he was moved to tears by its sheer beauty as he declared, “It is a paradise! when he landed on the island. This 300-acre island is auspiciously shaped like a turtle with rocky coastlines punctuated with sandy coves. The turtle or tortoise is one of the four celestial animals in Feng Shui - a great symbol of protection and support - and this resort has indeed been blessed with success since its opening. Guests who arrive on the jetty are greeted by a large natural rock formation that looks like a face with a big smile. Within its beating heart lies a two million-year-old rainforest teeming with wildlife that have inhabited the island long before any human habitation. The resort is celebrated for its luxury villas, award-winning Spa Village and great restaurants, but the jewel in the crown

is its stunning natural beauty and its exotic wildlife. It is the perfect place for nature lovers and deserves top billing above the luxury man-made amenities.
A NEW DAY, A NEW DAWN If you think the jungle is a tranquil haven, think again. As night falls, the crickets create quite a cacophony with their nightly jungle orchestra. At the crack of dawn when swirling mist dances on the forest canopy, the dawn chorus of the feathered kind starts their morning ensemble, tweeting in perfect harmony. Just yards from my villa, a pair of hornbills are having a raucous conversation over a breakfast of palm nuts. Their squawking calls resemble the rock singers of the forest, compared with the sweet melody of the other birds. A white-bellied sea eagle soars high in the sky above, hunting for prey for his morning snack. As it swoops down on a nest with young chicks of a black bird, the mother bird goes into defence mode to protect its young, shrieking and fluttering its wings frantically to thwart off the attack. Father bird comes to the rescue, and the devoted parents manage to fight off the fearsome eagle as it flies off to look for easier prey in the sea. It was a priceless moment to witness the avian aerial combat. The liveliest denizens in the jungle are the long-tailed macaques notorious for their antics. The cheeky monkeys are up to their usual mischief, shrieking and chasing one another on the branches like naughty children. I must admit I have a soft spot for them, as their behaviour is so human-like. By
Hanging around with flying foxes
mid-morning, monitor lizards would crawl out of their hiding place and sprawl lazily on the big rocks by the sea, catching the sun’s rays to warm up their cold-blooded bodies. By dusk, high frequency sound can be heard from a cluster of trees by the jetty, as flying foxes wake up from their roost to forage for insects in the forest. Their nightly exodus is a sight to behold as they arouse from their long slumber during the day hanging upside down in groups. Flying foxes belong to the mega-bat species and are the largest bats in the world. Their faces resemble mini foxes, hence their name. Guests on the resort marvel at the sight every evening as the flying squadron set off for dinner shrieking into the fading sunset. They will return to roost by dawn. Oh…the sheer joy of being surrounded by Mother Nature’s awesome creations. It is magical and a privilege to watch nature at its best.
ONE ISLAND ONE RESORT The island is an exclusive domain for Pangkor Laut Resort only, as no outside day-trippers are allowed. It belongs to YTL Hotels, Malaysia’s premier hospitality company for luxury resorts well-known for their

eco-friendly policy. In accordance with its mission statement, when the company built the resort, it was mindful of preserving the environment with as little destruction to nature and wildlife as possible. The fact that the wildlife on the island is thriving is thanks to this company’s ethos. The lush virgin forest is left untouched and revered as a green shrine to the island, where guests can pay homage to the enchanting rainforest on guided jungle treks. It is always a propitious sign of great Feng Shui when nature thrives in a place that indicates vibrant energy in the environment. Accommodation comes in chic villas built on the hills with a panoramic view of the Straits of Malacca, on the beachfront and gardens with sounds of the gentle waves lapping against the shore, and over the sea in villas on stilts - their premium category. But the most exclusive villas are tucked away on a private cove in The Estate, where each villa has its own swimming pool, chef and butler to attend to your every need. The exquisite villas are where celebrities and the super wealthy come to relax and be pampered in privacy away from the main resort. I am ensconced in the Spa Villa with its private balcony overlooking the Straits, watching fishing boats

chugging out into the sea with a view of Pangkor Island, the big inhabited sister island of Pangkor Laut across the water. In front of my villa is the verdant forest where I can be an armchair naturalist watching the wildlife and listening to the birdsongs. I have a great view of marine life from my front porch as I am enthralled by a large school of anchovies swimming in unison and sea urchins with their menacing spikes lurking among the corals, while sea cucumbers look like purple slugs strewn on the sea bed. Now and again, pied hornbills fly past with their large beaks and big wings, while sea hawks take advantage of the thermal updraft of the warm air gliding high in the sky. Pure joy! In the oppressing afternoon heat, the forest is silent as the animals are resting in the shade of the trees. It is time for me to take a break from nature and head to the spa for a spot of therapeutic massage.
A SPA IS BORN The multiple-award winning Spa Village on the resort is one of the best in Malaysia. It is set in a tranquil enclave surrounded by trees and a lovely garden, complete with treatment pavilions, a gazebo for napping, two Bath Houses and a Rotenburu thermal pool among other facilities. It has its own swimming pool and bar serving healthy snacks and juices. One of the amazing features is the Bath House experience, unique only to this Spa Village. The following ritual is performed before each treatment as my therapist leads me to the Bath House after I have changed into a sarong, which I

The sweeping white sandy beach is an idyllic place to relax or take a dip in the emerald green waters. It was voted as one of the top beaches in the world by Condé Nast magazine. As I am enjoying an iced watermelon juice at Chapman’s Bar by the beach, a giant monitor lizard walks nonchalantly on the sand like a prehistoric predator on the prowl. It has no fear of humans, as it knows it is safe on an island that respects his domain and that of his fellow jungle creatures. Letting
GO
This month, our delightfully positive lifestyle Guru, SHAHREEN KAMALUDDIN tells us to take inventory of what we can clear from the closet of our mind, our heart and our soul, so that fresh air can flow in, bringing better mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. She advises that as we enter the New Year, it is beneficial to see how we can improve ourselves, our relationships and our life. Let’s engage then in some mental spring-cleaning.
C
linging on to the past, to material possessions, painful memories, people, and issues, not only clutters your life mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually, it also saps your precious energy. It is so important to let go of these things, and the more frequently we do it, the more open you will be to fully enjoy what life has to offer. Like all habits, unless you consciously attempt to release things that hold you back, you will clutter your mental, physical and emotional space.
Declutter your physical space If you continue to purchase new things without clearing old stuff accumulated over the years, it will clutter your physical space, at home or in the office. Over time, cluttering physical space can overwhelm your mental, emotional and physical state.

Don’t live in the future Just as it is pointless to cling to the past because it is gone forever, it is pointless to live in the future, because it has not yet arrived. What letting go really means Letting go involves being fully conscious of the goings-on in your daily interactions with others and choosing not to react in a way that builds up negative energy in your mind, body and soul. One way you can do this is by observing people’s behaviour without judgement or listening to their differing points of view without feeling offended or attacked. This conscious detachment mode will bring you inner peace that will pervade all areas of your life. As you observe yourself practicing letting go of tension, worry and frustration each day, you will eventually eliminate issues with anyone or anything.
What letting in really means When you consciously choose to let go of past negative habits of thinking, feeling and behaving, you are clearing mental, physical and emotional clutter, thus creating space for new positive experiences to enter your life. #PSO JO +PIPS #BISV UIF TPVUIFSONPTU state of West Malaysia, Kenneth was educated in Singapore just across the causeway. After completing his primary and secondary education, he did a diploma course in fashion design in Singapore, a city famous for its thriving fashion industry. After graduation, he worked as a makeup artist in the city before moving to London in 1997 where he carved a successful career as a much sought after makeup artist in London, Europe and internationally.
What inspired him to be a makeup artist I enquired, a career not exactly a first choice for Asian families who would prefer their children to be doctors, lawyers or engineers among other conventional professionals? He SFDBMMFE i(SPXJOH VQ * XPVME GPMMPX my mom to the hairdressers where there would be fashion magazines. So from a young age, my curiosity was always piqued flipping through these magazines and seeing how something so simple like a pencil or lipstick can transform a woman so dramatically. I guess I was fascinated with the transformative powers or colours and lines. And my mom and aunts would wear makeup and they would look glamorous and enhanced. “So when I had the chance, I’d sneak mom’s makeup bag and try the products out on my poor sister! She would be the model of the mags when I tried replicating the looks I saw on the pages. I learnt quickly the tools of the trade and how to break everything down from the pictures into what I’d need to replicate the look.” His interest in that field was further fuelled by what he read about famous makeup artists in the magazines and he continued, “I then started noticing the names of the artists who created the looks. 1FPQMF MJLF 5ZFO 1BU .D(SBUI 7BM (BSMBOE 4FSHF -VUFOT ,FWZO "VDPJO 5PQPMJOP 8BZ #BOEZ BOE .BSZ (SFFOXFMM XFSF BMM QFPQMF * looked up to. He explained, “One thing I learnt to trust was my instincts. That gut feeling that guides me to do what I would do on someone’s face. I suppose it’s through years of practising and playing with my tools on as many different skin tones and features across the globe that has helped develop an eye for what I think makes someone beautiful. And then being able to listen and interact with the person to find out what makes them unique and what makes them feel beautiful and confident. There’s nothing more beautiful than someone who is confident and assured

A Day In The Life Of A Makeup Artist
What is a day like in the life of Kenneth Soh, I asked. I am exhausted just listening to his hectic schedule as he narrated, “My job is split between working on photography shoots for magazines, advertising campaigns both print and TV, and also looking after the beauty needs of celebrities. My day usually starts early, at 4.30 or 5 am. I wake up and drink a protein shake while getting dressed to head into my gym, which is in my garage. I train 5 days a week from 60-90 minutes, depending on what kind of training I am doing. I then get showered and dressed and make my commute into work by around 9. I don’t have routine days for work, so sometimes I start early, sometimes I start late, but it generally starts at 9 for shoots. I get to work and I will have some breakfast, meet and chat with the team I’m working with that day about what we are doing, how we

EXPERIMENT WITH
CREATIVE WALL DESIGNS to update the look of your home!
Here comes the time of the year many of us are contemplating a change in our homes to greet in the New Year. But how do we bring about this change? Do we repaint our walls the same colour year after year, or do get a bit more adventurous and explore new options? To begin with, let’s look at the different ways we can dress up our walls for the New Year. Pattern designs can work in smaller rooms.
Wallpaper - the easiest and quickest option There is no quicker way to create a new look for a room than to dress up the walls with wallpaper. However, the design you choose will influence how the room is perceived. For large rooms, always try to keep the design pattern and colour neutral, as this creates a subtle backdrop for the furniture and wall hangings. Avoid large patterns such as floral or repetitive pattern designs, as these create disarray in the visual acceptance of a room that is large in size. For smaller rooms such as studies or bedrooms, you may consider using such pattern designs, but select suitable patterns for the room usage. I would personally avoid any haphazard repetitive pattern for the bedrooms, as this could create too much visual friction.
Wall Frames Another great technique for creating visual lines on your walls is to incorporate wall frames using rectilinear box frames. Take note that there are 3 elements to a wall frame design. The first is the horizontal linear element to separate the upper and lower box frames. This can be done through a liner molding or a patterned design. The lower portion would assume a smaller box pattern usually evened out through the length of the wall, while the upper portion

Wall frames are great for adding subtle interest to your walls, making them look more finished.
can either be a single box feature or a larger multiple of the lower box frames. The next design element to consider is the colour of the wall. You can either paint the whole wall white, letting the soft furnishings take precedence in the room design, or keep the box frame in white with a different color for the background. It is important to note that such wall features would have a higher cost factor, as it would involve building a new wall onto the existing wall; to save cost, you can do a hybrid design where you maintain the lower and middle elements and forego the upper box frame, and instead, wallpaper the upper portion to give a uniform look throughout the room.
Wainscoting Another variation is to introduce a higher middle layer up to 5-6 feet, which gives a cottage feel. Doing so elevates the eye level, so the lower level can be used as a functional space. In this example, a seating arrangement is built into the wainscoting feature wall. For other scenarios, you may create a higher ledge for storage or for hanging coats, while the lower level is used for seating, storage or display. You may also take this design feature into the bathroom, where the lower portion is tiled up to protect the walls from water. The upper portion can then be painted in a pastel colour tone to give a brighter feel to the bathrooms. Mosaic tiles can add interest, especially when used in a contrasting colour.
Wall Tiling
Wainscoting creates a warm ambience in the home.
F E N G S H U I WO R L D | w w w. f s w m a g . c o m | F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 7
Another wall effect you can consider is a mosaic tile pattern, which can be used in areas that require constant cleaning, such as the kitchen or bathrooms. Introducing a mosaic tile pattern creates an interesting backdrop for the rest of the furniture in the room, especially when there is a sharp contrast in colour. In the example here, the greyish silver tone of the tile pattern provides a shimmering backdrop for the red-coloured kitchen, allowing the foreground element to stand out further. Another hybrid design for this material palette is to mix the smaller mosaic tile pattern with larger-sized tiles, to give a contrast between the two materials. Doing so can creates visual separation of the space, which can enlarge the perceived space, achieving a roomier feel. 81
Exposed brick gives great character to a living space.
Exposed Brick Exposed bricks offer a warm urban feel, and when mixed with tall open windows, will give a loft in the city type effect. This design feature works well with white or black furniture pieces, as the neutral tones allow the solid colours to stand out, creating a background-foreground kind of effect for the space. The result can be fabulously hipster.
Unique Design Features Finally, if you want to add some unique features, you can consider the use of 3D patterned motifs, such as a 3D-floral pattern to be installed onto the wall frames to give a feature effect. Try not to overdo it with motifs, as too repetitive an effect will destroy the uniqueness of the design. Or if you want to explore with technology, you can try using magnetic or wipeable paint on the walls. This works well with kids’ rooms, where you can create a feature wall with a portal effect. Paint the inner and outer walls in a different colour, but with the inner wall with the feature paint. This will allow one to hang magnets on the wall or even use it as a work display for your children’s work with the flexibility of changing the artwork without the repainting. When it comes to wall designs, you will be amazed at how many different ways you can design your space. Take a step back to see which works well for the space in question, and explore all the different options, as each design feature has its own unique expression, but regardless, changing your walls will definitely bring in a different feel to your home for the New Year. 82

THE 10 INTELLIGENT DAY PILLARS
A
number of articles back, I introduced you to the 6 Talented Stars, where people who have this star in their chart are believed to possess strong inborn talents, much like the 6 famous Apsaras from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Such people are said to be very good at singing and dancing, and have great talent in the arts. When you read Lillian Too’s book on the Secrets of your Birth Chart, she explains very clearly about the Scholastic Star. In this case, people who have the Scholastic Star have a strong interest in furthering their knowledge, and they also find it easy to learn new skills. Of course, if they have more than 2 units of the Scholastic Star, it could well indicate someone who is a career student. This time, we will be looking at the 10 Intelligent Stars. Unlike the other 2 stars, this star indicates someone born with a high intellect and who is very clever. Such people are also usually very versatile in their skillset and will find it easy to gain fame and success. They also tend to have a good reputation and can gain fame through their efforts. So how do you know if you have this star in your chart? Look at your Day Pillar, and if your Day Pillar is similar to one of the Day Pillars in the table, you have this star. So let us look at an example chart from one of my clients. Her chart is balanced with all 5 elements present, and her self-element has been determined to be weak Yin Fire. There is a slight excess of Metal in her chart, so we know she is someone with a strong character and who can be stubborn at times. Favourable elements for her would

F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 7 | w w w. f s w m a g . c o m | F E N G S H U I W O R L D
Earth and Water are not for lucky for her. When we look at her earthly branches, we can observe that she has the Tiger and Boar combination, which brings her the luck of having good and supportive friends. Next, we see that she has the Rooster self-penalty, as a result of the Rooster in both Year and Day Pillars. We can read this as her having some problem with getting married, where her romantic relationships can be said to be stormy or disharmonious. This self-penalty clash can affect her overall luck if she allows her inner feelings of inadequacy to affect her confidence and perseverance. Therefore, for her, the Dragon becomes very important, as this would be the remedy for the self-penalty clash. There are many hidden stars in her chart, among them being 2 units of the Scholastic Star, 2 units of the War Star, the Fortune Noble Star, The Nobility Star as well as the Intelligence Star. These 5 stars are most auspicious for her and indicate that she is one clever and talented
girl with a wide range talents. Add to that the Nobleman Star and 2 units of the Star of Powerful Mentors, which ensures that success comes easily to her. While all this is sounds very positive, there is one taboo to her luck. Her chart has the Star of the Yin Gate – so she must avoid attending white events such as funerals, visiting people who are on their deathbed in hospitals, or going out late at night especially during the Chinese 7th month or visiting cemeteries. Doing so will negate the good effects of the Tiger-Boar secret friend combination, as the Star of the Yin Gate is indicated by the Boar. So if she ever accidentally breaks this taboo, she will need to perform more prayers and spend more time under the sun to attract more Yang Fire to strengthen her self-element. Remember that the Boar happens to be Yin Water, while her selfelement is Yin Fire. There is a period of her life when this taboo does not apply, and that would be during her
age between 27 and 36, as the animal of this luck pillar is the Tiger. So now we know that she has great intelligence with a good measure of luck, what can we say about her luck in 2017 the Year of the Fire Rooster? For starters, we know that the Rooster of the year further aggravates the Rooster self-penalty. She is also deemed to antagonize the Tai Sui. The Fire element of the first half of 2017 is helpful, while the second half is going to bring her problems, mostly through her own stubbornness. She should thus make an effort to strengthen the energy of the Dragon this year by placing figurines of the Dragon in her home, beside her bed, on her work desk and also to wear a pendant of the Dragon. She must also carry the Tai Sui Amulet and place the Tai Sui Plaque in the West part of her home.

DIFFICULTY IN HAVING CHILDREN
Q A
We’ve been married for 10 years but so far, we have not been able to have children. What can we do? There are number of things you can do to help. First, activate your West location by placing a pink crystal lotus there. You can also display feng shui symbols like the pomegranate or a Chinese painting of 1000 children in this location. One feng shui symbol I love is the Laughing Buddha with children. Place this in the West corner of your living room or your bedroom. Secondly, I suggest orientating your bed such that your husband is sleeping towards his “love” direction based on his Kua number. You can find this information in Lillian Too’s Feng Shui Diary. You can also chant the mantras to the goddess TARA – her mantra is OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA.
WHERE TO PUT MY PEACH BLOSSOM ANIMAL?
Q
I’m a Rabbit. I read in your “100 Ways to Improve Love Luck” to display a Rat image in the north or east. Which is it? The Rat is the Peach Blossom animal of the Rabbit, and its location is in the North. The Rabbit’s location is in the East. So you can either place it in the North (Rat’s location) or in your own location (East). Normally, the convention is to place it in
A

the North location as this is the Rat’s personal location. But if you cannot find space in the North, then the East is also acceptable.
ADVICE ON WEARING MY DZI BRACELETS
Q
I purchased 9 Eyed Dzi with Crystal and 15 Eyed Dzi with Red Tiger bracelet. Can you give some advice on the do’s and don’ts for using these bracelets and how I can re-energize them. Also, do I wear them on the left or right wrist? Wow, these are mega powerful bracelets indeed. Crystal beads are really sensitive to picking up and storing energies...so it becomes very helpful to cleanse them from time to time. Dzi beads become very powerful when you charge them with the rays of the sun and moon, and chant mantras and affirmations on them. If you know mantras, you can chant any mantra you wish; I highly recommend Guru Rinpoche’s mantra or King Gesar’s mantra if you are a man, and of course Tara Mantras if you are a woman. Just chant and blow onto the bracelets every morning when you’ve just woken up and finished brushing your teeth and cleaning yourself. Once a fortnight, wash them with sea-salt water and pat dry to remove whatever dirt and bad energies it may have collected. Then leave it out to dry in the sun for an hour…

I have 2 daughters – a Monkey and a Boar. They don’t seem to get along; in fact they seem to fight everyday. I’m at my wits’ end. What can I do to help them get along? The Monkey and Boar do not have much astrological affinity, but nevertheless, they do not clash too badly. You can definitely improve the situation. Check if they are both sleeping towards their good directions. Also remember that the Monkey year has been a tough one for both signs. The Boar especially had the #3 star, which made her very quarrelsome. This coming year will be better for the Boar but the Monkey won’t be having such a great year. Please place all the correct cures for the Boar and Monkey.
TROUBLE FINDING A JOB DUE TO DAD’S ASHES
Q
I lost my job several years ago and have not been able to find a stable job or decide which city to live in. My dad passed away four years ago and I’ve kept his ashes. Could this have something to do with my jobless situation? I never recommend anyone keeping ashes of their loved ones. You need to let your dad go. He has passed on and quite likely already reborn elsewhere. So either you place your dad’s ashes in a special temple that specialises in doing prayers for the deceased, or you can scatter your dad’s ashes into the ocean. It’s time to let the past go and move on. While you’re doing this, you should also activate your North sector so you can start finding a way to make a living. The North is the career sector, and this location can be activated by placing water there.
