Building Futures: A suite of short courses
Skills for Climate Change is providing an exciting opportunity to help people working in the construction and building services engineering sectors prepare for the future. Whether you’re employed, selfemployed, an employer or just starting out, you cannot afford to ignore climate change. More customers are demanding greener products; there are more government incentives to cut carbon through buildings and there are huge business and career benefits to those able to provide a low carbon service. To meet this demand, Skills for Climate Change has developed a series of FREE short courses aimed at raising awareness, upskilling and engaging with the low carbon agenda.
The courses are available in a variety of different formats, including online, via mobile phone, on-site toolbox talks and classroom-based. No qualifications are needed to join the courses. However, knowledge of the relevant construction and building services engineering occupations is recommended. Skills for Climate Change is fully subsidised for employed individuals, who are legally resident in the UK and based in London. For more information please contact: Wendy Smith on sfcc@newham.ac.uk
Future Proofing Your Career Essential for all construction and building services engineering workers.
We live in a fast-changing world where new technologies continually emerge. Future proofing a career by developing the skills that address climate change is essential for all construction and building services engineering businesses and workers. Future Proofing Your Career is an essential 2 ½ hour course which will help you find out why skills for climate change are needed, what types of technical and non-technical skills are needed and how to identify relevant, training qualifications and competence standards.
Introduction to the Code for Sustainable Homes Essential knowledge for all construction and building services engineering workers.
The Code for Sustainable Homes was introduced in April 2007 to reduce carbon emissions and create homes that are more sustainable. An understanding of the Code is essential knowledge for all construction and building services engineering workers. This vital 3 hour course will give you an overview of the Code for Sustainable Homes, why it was introduced, how it works and its benefits. It will also introduce and explore each of the code’s 9 design categories.
Environment Technology Systems Awareness (Level 3)
All construction and building services engineering workers need a basic awareness of environmental technology systems.
The use of Environmental Technology Systems in the construction and building services engineering industries is increasing rapidly. Thanks to Government policy and incentives, consumers are demanding technologies such as solar hot water and renewable electricity generation. This 14 hour tutor-led course will help you understand the fundamental working principles of micro-renewable energy and water conservation technologies. You will also learn about the regulations, building location and feature requirements and the advantages and disadvantages of micro-renewable energy and water conservation systems.
Solar Renewable Energy SystemsScience Essential for anyone involved in the design, specification and/or installation of solar renewable energy systems.
Solar Renewable Energy Systems to produce hot water and electricity are becoming more popular and their use is set to grow significantly. An understanding of the solar resource and the science behind solar hot water and electricity production is essential for all who are involved in the design, specification and/or installation of these systems. This 1 ½ day tutor-led course at the Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings at London Southbank University will introduce you to the scientific principles of solar thermal and solar photovoltaic renewable energy systems. This new and innovative facility includes full working solar energy systems that will be demonstrated as part of the course delivery.
