The Editor
ello Circuit Readers! Summer is here! Now I know what you’re thinking. “What’s there to celebrate, Jimmie, it’s a billion degrees outside!” OK, fine, I concede that it’s hot and just getting hotter, but get it together, people! We have to push through it and find some relief somewhere. Despite the heat, there are still tons of places to go and things to be excited about. You just have to find that silver lining, and in the summer, that silver lining is the pool. And beer gardens. And garden parties. In this issue we’ve brought you stories on some interesting historical aspects of Kurdistan. From the story behind the long-standing Mam Khalil’s Teahouse to the ins-and-outs of how Kaymak is made, this issue you might find yourself learning quite a bit about things you never even realized you wanted to know. We’ve also packed out this issue with places to meet people and enjoy new and different activities. There are really no excuses here. Check out the Erbil International Toastmasters if you’re looking to meet new people and/or gain new skills. By the time you’ve attended a few meetings, you’ll be considered a regular smooth talker. Perhaps you’ll even find yourself in conversation with Chiman Salih, a Kurdish author who likes to take on tough topics and whose new book, The World in Chaos, we’ve highlighted this issue. Of course since it’s summer it’s time to relax and that also means pampering ourselves a little bit. Blush Beauty House, a newly opened salon, is there for all your needs, but they really want you to know what’s best for you nails. And even though it’s time for “bikini bodies,” (whatever that’s supposed to mean) it’s also time for burgers, and hot dogs, and popsicles, oh my! But if you’re not feeling like grilling, make time to pop by the newly revamped Tang for some real Chinese food, or its new partner in crime downstairs, Tango Cafe & Bar, which is offering up authentic Filipino food and daily activities to keep you entertained. Of course it wouldn’t be an issue of Circuit without a whole lot of wanderlust. Pay attention to your options, both inside Kurdistan and out. Kurdistan offers up waterfalls and cool mountain getaways. Meanwhile, there’s always the possibility to escape to Greece for some much loved (and needed) beach time! But while you’re here, be sure to stop by White Erbil Rooftop and Lounge Bar at Masaya Hotel where you can bask in the sun by the pool or relax while watching the sunset over a few margaritas made by the expert bartender, Mohammed. Definitely don’t forget to check out what’s new, including the Gulan Park Garden, located off Gulan Road in front of the World Trade Center - Gulan Towers. We’ll be working with them to host World Cup viewings, concerts, festivals and more! Finally, speaking of concerts, we’re calling all musicians to participate in our Battle of the Bands concert late this summer. Check out Page 69 for more info on how to participate and keep an eye on Circuit and EPIC if you just want to make sure you’re there to root for your favorite local band.
Jimmie Collins Editor-in-Chief
An American living in the Kurdistan Region for nearly five years, Jimmie Collins leads a vibrant social life among expats and locals in Erbil. She now calls Erbil home, settling into the city with her husband (Sabah), two massive dogs, a feisty cat, and an infant daughter. She complains of never having nearly enough free time to do all the things she loves, however, she always makes time for food and friends. Circuit Magazine, which she started with her business partners three years ago, is a hobby turned obsession meant to help others get to know Kurdistan's social scene and enjoy themselves as much as she does.
Enjoy the Circuit!

Mam Khalil’s Teahouse
Values of the Past and the Future... By Antigoni Kalaitzi
Located in the heart of the city, among the busy alleys inside Qaysari Bazaar, the famous teahouse of Mam Khalil is considered to be the oldest of its kind in Erbil and serves culture and history along with a hot cup of chai.

Chaixanay Mam Khalil as it’s pronounced in Kurdish, dates back to 1962, when the namesake founder Khalil, was just a teenager. He used to sell tea in the streets of Erbil for a living, from the age of 10 years old. No one could imagine back then that he would become a legendary chaichi (professional tea maker) of Kurdistan. The walls of the tiny shop are jam-packed with thousands of photos - dating back to the 1930s of family, friends, historical events or places in Erbil and every famous person who has ever entered the
11
doors. Nechrivan Barzani, Karim Sainjari, Ahmed Dawood, Nawzad Hadi and officials from all over the world are just a sample of those who embraced the humongous effort of the owner, to retain within the walls of his teashop a genuine sense of the Kurdish culture and history. Mam Khalil used to welcome every guest individually with a warm handshake and a wide smile, always accompanied from a glass of tea. He was a storyteller for the new generations and a childhood friend and memory keeper for the
elderly community. Sadly on March of 2015 the beloved chaichi of Erbil passed away. But his memory lives on as the tiny museum that he created with so much love continues to stand proudly in the maze of narrow paths in the bazaar. His son Mohammed now holds the reins of the family business. “My father loved his job,” he boasted. “He used to spend the whole day in the shop, socializing with everyone. It was his pleasure sharing stories of the old town. Many people of different age groups used to visit the place just to talk with

Community my father and listen to him explaining how the one or the other have been made or happened.” You can clearly see the admiration in his eyes while he walks around the overcrowded walls pointing out his father’s photo collection. “The photos were my father’s hobby. He liked photographs since he was a teenager. He created a small treasure out of his passion. He can be seen posing in many of the old photographs, often with famous patrons.” After his father’s death, Mohammed made some small changes. “I rearranged the layout of the hanging pictures, and added some more beverages, as my dad used to sell exclusively tea. Now we also offer soft drinks, coffee and ayran. Just a slightly modern touch to go along with our times while keeping alive the tradition my father created.” Nowadays, new photos taken with customers are not kept on the walls, there is no space anyway. But Mohammed always captures the moment and creates online

memories stuffed with happy faces sipping hot tea, on the Facebook page he created under the name Chayxanay Mam Xalil. I could spend hours going through Mam Khalil’s picture library, sipping hot tea out of the shiny pyaras (the Kurdish word for the little tea cups). Photos from the construction of Citadel’s famous square were my favorite. With every turn of my head there was something new to see. A vintage radio enjoying its silence placed on a shelf above the big windows, handcrafted ornaments out of wood or fabric and so many more! I could nurture forever the magic of the first-time discovery and never visit the teashop again. But it’s the feeling of the place that makes you to want more. Mam Khalil’s Teahouse, is an ode to life’s simplicity and I’m eager to return and become friends with those steeped in the walls of history. Allthough I’m pretty sure I’ll get lost within the labyrinth of the bazaar on my way back!

Erbil International Toastmasters Academy Where Leaders Are Made.
Do you want to become a confident public speaker and strong leader? If so, Erbil International Toastmasters is the place for you! Toastmasters International (founded in 1924) is a nonprofit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. Let’s take a closer look at Erbil’s club. Erbil Toastmasters Academy was the first Toastmasters club established in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in May 2015. Since then, the club has helped many members in their community service activities by giving better sales presentations, working better with fellow employees and colleagues,
15
effectively developing and presenting ideas, and increasing self-esteem and confidence in oneself. Upon joining Erbil Toastmasters Academy, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment, where no instructor exists, as members evaluate one another’s speeches. This evaluation process is an integral component of the overall educational program and helps the members learn how to accept constructive criticism more objectively. The progress of the participants, comes through a series of 10 speaking assignments designed to instill a basic foundation in public speaking.
Circuit Magazine
After the basic speech manual is done, members can select among 15 advanced programs in order to develop their speaking skills that are geared to specific career and job function needs. Here’s how a typical Toastmasters meeting looks like: Meetings usually begin with a short business session which helps members learn basic meeting procedures. The assigned Toastmaster of the meeting reviews the agenda and describes the program. The Toastmaster will continue to appear between the speaking sessions to present speakers and evaluators. A presidential welcome is following, before the “Grammarian” take over to present the word of the day and remind to the members to knock their tables whenever someone is using the assigned word in his speech. The Grammarian will also take notes in order to spot mistakes and kindly advice at the end of the meeting, the correct use of grammar & punctuation. A “Timer” will be responsible for the amount of time each speaker can use, and let them know with signs whether they’re in the middle of their time or they reached the limit. The “Ah Counter” will count how many interjections the speakers have during their speech, and the “General Evaluator” will give at the end of each meeting points on how speakers and others evaluators can improve their skills. The second part of the meeting is the so called fun one as the members theirselves like to call it. The “Table Topics Master” will call on stage random members & guests and in a casual, game setting, will give a shorttime speech with any given subject, after allowing them to gather their thoughts for couple of seconds.

By Antigoni Kalaitzi
Kids, middle-aged or elderly, are all drooling over a fresh roll of kaymak. With warm naan on the side and drizzled with honey, this heavenly cream is the ultimate breakfast, snack, or light dinner. Made from the milk of water buffalo raised in Mosul or Kirkuk, Kaymak has a rich and creamy texture, that holds a special place on every Kurdish table and needs an even more special yet simple procedure to reach its final form. Mr. Abass Muhamed continues the family tradition at Lade factory in Erbil, which makes daily 150kg of kaymak for the last 50 decades and supplies some of the biggest markets in the region. He was more than happy to share, step by step, the production process, after he offered me a warm glass of fresh milk, the same he is using for his kaymak.

Culture The preparation 1. Fresh milk arrives daily from Kirkuk, and mmediately goes through filtration. 2. Poured into large pots, it’s been stirring and boiling for around 45 minutes to 1 hour, until it reaches 95C to 100C. The proccess 3. Using a specialized pipe the milk is transferred into deep dish trays (each one holds 25L of milk) placed in small, well-ventilated rooms, where it stays to rest for about 1 hour with the door shut, so the steam is trapped and the fat can rise to the surface. 4. The door is unlocked, the steam is eliminated, and the milk is allowed to reach room temperature. This takes about 8 hours. 5. Next step is to cool the kaymak for an additional 8 hours. The door is locked again and air coolers are turned on until the temperature reaches 0C. The final product 6. Kaymak has now reached its final form. A specialized cutter is used to separate the kaymak into portions. 1-2L of cold water is poured onto the surface and the delicious rolls are gently handpicked and placed on distribution trays.

Understanding the difference between Gel and Acrylic nail extensions. Gel extensions are more durable and less likely to stain compared to acrylic extensions. In 2003, Chroo Group became a major subcontracting entity for several AFCEE prime contractors. We used that access to western engineering expertise to learn all we could possibly learn about the requirements and standards required in the market. Starting as a vehicle leasing and HVAC specialty service, we have grown the company into a world-class full-service Architecture, Engineering, and Construction firm with more than 150 professionals located in our main and field offices throughout Iraq, and hundreds of tradespersons and workers on our sites. As far as we have come from our humble beginnings, we have never lost track of the importance of first listening to our client’s needs, leveraging our expertise and always acting in their best interests to turn those needs into reality. Chroo Group realizes that our clients require a firm that can offer lasting, innovative design-build solutions on accelerated schedules without compromising safety or quality. Our clients need a company that not only has the technical capability to achieve the requirements specified but a responsive service philosophy that will maintain constant communications with them from the field site to the contracting officer’s level. We strive constantly to identify, understand and meet our clients’ requirements rather than impose our desires on them. We continuously utilize all of our technical and innovative skills to find the best and most effective ways to bring those requirements to fruition, but we will never forget that it is the customer whose requirements must be met. We have a proven performance record for fast-track engineering and construction projects. Our personnel are continuously engineering new and innovative solutions to perform work more quickly, fully integrate quality and safety standards, decrease costs and schedule, and maximize client satisfaction. We have worked many subcontracts for western construction firms and have learned world standards from those organizations. Chroo Group has extensive experience and expertise in construction, civil engineering, logistics, security, general trading, leasing and oil field services. We have offices all over the country, and an HQ in Erbil. We offer international standard construction practices and controls combined with an intimate connection to our homeland. Because of this cross-cultural connection, we can anticipate and overcome challenges that confront our clients as well as present solutions to the distinctly local difficulties of operating in Iraq. In today’s fast-paced market, clients turn to firms who

can offer lasting, innovative design-build solutions on accelerated schedules without compromising safety or quality. We are known for our fast-track engineering and construction projects. Our success as an engineering and construction contractor in Iraq stems from our financial stability, resources, and relationships. When we mobilize for a project, we are able to do bulk procurement of needed materials up-front. There are never delays on our projects caused by cash flow. We are well established and stable. Additionally, because of the scope of our experience on previous projects, we have a tremendous amount of capital equipment resources at our disposal. From trucks to scaffolding to automated metal structure forming machines, we don’t have to wait until we have a purchase order to buy equipment. We are ready to go today. Through well-developed relationships with the local sheiks, government officials, ministries, and local vendors, we quickly respond when establishing life support camps, mobilizing personnel, and transferring materials within Iraq. Chroo Group also believes that fulfilling our Corporate Social Responsibility in the community is absolutely essential to our performance. Why Your Fuel Pump Matters
Photos & Story provided by Toyota Iraq
In this region, fuel quality has always been an issue. All vehicles use a fuel pump to filter the fuel and remove any residue before delivering it from the tank to the engine. Faulty fuel pumps can potentially cause serious damage to the engine and even affect performance of the vehicle. Many people believe that the life-span of a fuel pump depends on the quality of fuel only, so Toyota Iraq began to investigate the fuel pump issue more closely to find out more. A team of Toyota Iraq experts were sent to the local market in Erbil to meet with car owners and hear firsthand what the real issues were. Many owners were changing fuel pumps regularly, and after investigation the team concluded that all the problems were related to poor installation by local shops and non-genuine fuel pumps.
37

There were also many “customized” fuel pumps being used that contained additional wiring & filters, which our team determined could cause a vehicle to suddenly burst into flame. The marketing manager of Toyota Iraq, Mr. Amer Salih commented: “Toyota is famous for its durability and quality parts. We studied this issue and found out that most of the problems caused by fuel pumps were related to non-genuine parts and poor installation by local shops. So, we decided to initiate a trial project to show that Genuine Parts and Authorized Toyota Services can solve these issues.” Three Toyota Hilux were selected for the project. All

TANGO CAFE & BAR
Your Place. Your style. By Antigoni Kalaitzi
While many are not familiar with Phillipino cuisine, they will for sure find interesting this delicate mix of of Spanish, Western, Chinese, Japanese, and Pacific Islander flavors, that clearly show country’s rich cultural history. A fact, that slowly makes Phillipino cuisine something like “the next big thing.” And if you think that being in Erbil makes it almost impossible to have a piece of it, then say no more! Tango Cafe & Bar, located on the ground floor of the famous Tang Chinese Restaurant (do you also see the opportunity for a delicious Asian feast here?) opened its door about a month ago and gives the opportunity to all of us, to know how it tastes to be a Phillipino foodie! Open to new cuisines and challenges, I gladly accepted the invitation of my colleagues to have lunch at the new place in town. The renovated ground floor of Tang is now painted in a vibrant purple color and beautiful handmade furniture from wooden palletes are the centerpieces of the place, giving to the restaurant a modern yet cozy touch.

While some cold beverages were landing on the table, we began to order. The goal was to try as many dishes as we could and that’s exactly what we did. We started with the “Salt & Pepper Chicken”. A simple yet delicious dish of crunch chicken bites with onions and cabbage. I would definitely enjoy this one as a beer snack! Next in the menu was the most mouth-melting beef stew I ever tried! Small chunks of perfectly tender beef in a rich tomato sauce and vegetables, was that little something I needed on my rice. Our main dish was one of the famous Philippino dishes, the “Tapsilog.” A mix of tangy, salty and slightly sweet flavor, is consisted from thin, marinated beef stripes, fried rice and a sunny side up egg tops it off! Served with kimchi, Tapsilog is one of the dishes that has been featured in my cravings later in the week! And if that looks like a lot of food to you, well... it wasn’t for us, since we had one more round! Popular

among the Philippino beer drinkers, “Chicken Sisig” was the last adittion to our table. Similar to a delicious chicken sizzler, had a sweet and sour taste, topped with an egg. I’ll definitely return back for some more tantalizing dishes from the Philippino cuisine, including the marinated Adobo chicken, and the Lonsilog which is a sausage version of the Tapsilog. But Tango doesn’t limit the options to just Philippino food. You’re still able to taste the old time classics of Tang Chinese Restaurant operating on the 1st floor and soon they will serve even more Asian delicacies, including dishes from Korea, Malaysia and Thailand. Did you hear that Pad Thai lovers? While food is indeed a strong card in Tango’s game, the place offers more than that. A variety of theme nights and fun happenings are always going on. Karaoke for the ambitious singers on Mondays, theme dancing nights on weekends and lots of fun activities rotating within the week, such as wine and cheese tastings, fun games and prizes and open mic on Saturday nights. As for the sports lovers, Tango offers the opportunity to watch your favorite games on a big flat screen while lounging on the large sofas. While serving delicious food, Tango Cafe & Bar, also supports any kind of community service and especially environmental preservation awareness. Looks like there is a new hangout place in town and we like it. Tango Cafe & Bar Facebook: /tangocafeandbar Phone: +964 751 785 2699 100m. street, opposite Erbil airport, Naz Naz, beside Sipan Hotel

Destination Kurdistan:
DUHOK
Photos and story provided by Kurdistan Iraq Tours
Summer in Kurdistan is…well…hot. Sure, it’s one of those “dry heat” places that people often talk about. The rains in Kurdistan normally end around May and won’t start again until sometime around September. But hot is still hot. That doesn’t mean, however, that there are not things to do and places to see. As Kurdistan, is largely set in a mountainous location, the higher altitudes tend to offer a more moderate climate. And the prevalence of running streams and lakes offers cooling refreshment. In this article, we want to suggest to you our kind guests, one location that can offer a getaway from that summer heat, Duhok City. Duhok City is the capital of Duhok province and is located one hour south (63 km) of Zakho and the Turkish border. Duhok has a variety of spellings in English and is sometimes referred to as Nohadra by Christians. Duhok is 80 km north of Mosul, and 160 km northwest of Erbil City. Duhok is surrounded by tall mountains on the north and south of the city, with valleys granting access to the east and west. The city has rapidly expanded since the 1990’s becoming Kurdistan’s third largest city with a population over 350,000. The population has swollen in recent years due to displacement from the war with ISIS. Due to the proximity of the Turkish border, Duhok has also become a trading hub because of the movement of commerce in and out from Turkey. In history, Duhok was an ancient Assyrian town (Nohadra), and it is believed that Alexander the Great passed through the town in 331 BC while en route to his battle with Darius of Persia at Gaugamela. Legend has it that Alexander required the locals to pay a tribute of two (du) palms (hok) to help sustain his army, and possibly leading to the origin of the town’s name. Though this is not confirmed.

Some of the highlights of Duhok City include: Bazaar: the city bazaar is not as large as Sulaimania, nor as much of a tourist attraction as Erbil; however, this bazaar is an authentic thriving place of commerce where most anything can be found. Like most bazaars in the region, haggling over price is common. Chwar Stoon Cave: This site is known as the “Four Pillars and is located next to the Duhok Dam. The site was a Zoroastrian Temple dating back to 600 BCE. Zoroastrianism is an ancient monotheistic Median / Persian religion and was once the state religion of several empires in the region. The site is maintained by the government, with a small entrance fee. There are steps up to the cave site, but the view toward the city and dam are worth the walk. There are many ancient carvings to see, and a man-made waterfall. Duhok Dam: The dam was completed in 1988 and is 60 m tall. The reservoir was created largely for agricultural purposes; however, it is also a popular spot for visitors to enjoy the lake. Promenade: The Promenade is an open bazaar consisting of many shops, restaurant and cafes leading up to Duhok Dam, and below Chwar Stoon. It is very popular in the evening and a great place for a walk. Azadi Panorama Park: This park was once a military base during the time of the Ba’athist Regime, but after the 1991 Uprising was converted into a public park. The park offers a wonderful view of the city below and is near the main commercial hub as well as sports facilities. The park has gardens, some restaurants, and an iconic sculpture of a couple embracing looking down on the city. Mullah Mustafa Park: On the main road on the south side of the city is a park dedicated to the legendary Kurdish leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani. The park features a giant sculpture of Mullah Mustafa watching over the city.

Qachakh Culture Museum: This is a private collection under the direction of well known Kurdish Peshmerga and poet Qadir Qachagh. He has a passion for Kurdish culture and history. The collection of antiques and artifacts were gathered by him over the years during his time in the mountains as a Peshmerga fighter and from donations from others who knew of his passion for Kurdish culture. Duhok National Museum: The Duhok National Museum is under the direction of the Duhok Antiquities Department. It holds an important collection of ancient artifacts. The museum was inaugurated in new facilities in 2013. Duhok is a city of religious diversity, with a significant Christian population, as well as large numbers of Yezidis in the city and surrounding towns and villages. Duhok is also a bit of a more conservative city, so it lacks some of the typical nightlife spots, however, the main hotels do have bars and entertainment, and some of the outdoor parks are open with nighttime activities. The city of Duhok offers a nice getaway on a warm summer day. There’s plenty to see in the city, shopping, and a bit of a break from the heat that one might see in Erbil or some other places. It is definitely worth checking out. Athens

Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and courage, Athìna in Greek, Athens also has plenty of nicknames dating back to the ancient times, like the “Violet-crowded City” because of the beautiful shades of its sunset or “The Glorious City” referring to city’s rich history, which is spanning over 3,400 years. Everyone will agree that Athens is an absolute must for all travelers. Home to 4.5 million people, the city that gave birth to democracy, science and fine arts, offers a folkish tradition juxtaposed with ultramodern concepts. Once in Athens you’ll find yourself amidst a contradicition of the scenery where the ancient monuments who proudly surround the city, are displayed next to grafitti walls, and sophisticated art galleries. City’s thriving culture is currently titled as “the New Berlin”, referring to the German capital’s status in the early 90s. That’s not a very welcoming term for the Greeks, as they believe that this proclaim undermines Athens’s own identity. Athenians love going out and so you will! They don’t need a reason or a special occassion to stroll around the city and meet friends for drinks, leisurely walks, lunch or dinner.

Sound Club held their soft opening March 3, 2018 and has been getting busier by the week. could our nightlife ask for? On the ground floor of the Masaya Hotel this location has taken on a whole new life. The team has revamped the entire area to give it a new feel. With dark walls that allows their neon blue logo “SOUND Nightclub” shine bright at the entrance of the club, as well as running the gamut with blue neon lights running overhead throughout the entire club and to top it off they added spot lights to highlight different areas and add flavor to the club. Taking the tour of the club you will get the full effect of what’s to come. Walking down length of the entry, you then come upon the bar area spanning the width of the club and lit up with the same neon blu. Looking to your left from the bar you will see the open concept room, and DJ booth to the left side of the room. The DJ Booth houses all equipment needed to make for a great
light show during the evening and is large enough to hold two DJ’s at once! Now add in the massive dance floor and it’s a party waiting to happen. Monday nights are set aside for the ladies who receive free entry and drinks all night long from 11pm-4am! Thursday and Friday are set aside as the typical nights to party the night away with multiple DJ’s to keep the dance music going strong. Fadi and Donjet have created a new events management team “Evident Group” and this summer, will be managing White Erbil, the rooftop pool lounge also at Masaya Hotel, as well as many other events throughout Erbil over the summer months. Keep an eye out on these two as they bring Erbil’s nightlife alive again! Sound Nightclub, Masaya Hotel, Tel: +964 751 594 9592 Facebook: /Sound-Nightclub-Erbil

Calling All Musicians! By Jimmie Collins
Several new bands have popped up in nightlife around Erbil lately, and there is a lot of variety out there. Some play heavy rock while others stick to more popular, mainstream music. Some play music in six different languages spanning a slew of genres, and others even play their own original songs. Circuit Magazine is calling all musicians to compete to find out who will earn the title of Best Band in Kurdistan. No matter if you’re a band from Sulaimania, Dohuk, Soran, or Erbil, any group can participate in this competition which all comes down to the comments of the judges and the votes of the crowd! If you’re in a band and interested in performing, put together a one-song demo playing your best song and send it to Circuit Magazine. Only a certain number of slots are available for participation. Once you make it through the demo audition, it’s your chance to wow the crowd. Get the audience interested in your performance and take home the prize! And for all the solo artists out there, don’t worry, there will also be a night for solo performers to prove their talent. Put together your demos and send them in to Circuit. All applications are due by August 1, 2018. For more information on participation or sponsorship, contact epic@party-circuit.com.
