MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR On behalf of the Board of Directors of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, I am pleased to present our Annual Report for 2016.
steps that will best enable CIS to continue to grow and thrive as a key stakeholder in the Canadian high-performance sport world.
It has been a year of internal change; almost everyone and everything in our organization has been affected by it. We have implemented a new model of governance and we have hired a new Chief Executive Officer, Graham Brown, who comes to us after 13 successful years building Rugby Canada.
Of course, with change comes angst. Adjusting to new norms can be challenging and stressful, but it is also an opportunity for tremendous growth. With our new governance model, you have been asked to put your trust in me and my fellow board members. We have been moving quickly and we acknowledge the courage that this requires from all our members.
Many of our staff are new and more are being hired. We have said goodbye to some long-serving and loyal employees; we have moved the head office from Ottawa to Toronto; and many of our members have stepped up to take on new positions on the Board and on committees. All of this change has been made in response to needs expressed by our members. It has followed reflection and analysis by all of us on those
With our new structure in place, our focus for the year ahead will be to settle in, catch our breath and take our next steps toward solidifying the foundation that we have built. I look forward to a bright future for CIS and, with your help, continuing to build a great organization.

INTRODUCTION BLK
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Welcome to the CIS Annual General Meeting – our first since you welcomed me to the team last fall. This is an opportunity for us to chart a path forward for the growth of University Sport in Canada. It is also an opportunity for me to thank each of you for welcoming me into the CIS family and for your help familiarizing me with the CIS’s many programs and activities. In particular, I want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of our staff, Board, Management Advisory Council and Committee Members. The CIS is embarking on an exciting chapter together as we seek to inject resources and enhance the professionalism of our university sport system. With your support, we have begun to restructure our organization to meet the high standards expected of sports organizations in Canada. The addition of great new staff will help to grow our organization out of our new head office in Toronto. We have overhauled our management systems with new financial processes, human resources policies and mobilized Board Committees that will
provide valuable counsel and direction to management. We are partnering with national sports organizations to expand our reach and we have brought our flagship event, the Vanier Cup, in-house starting this year. Finally, we are launching a brand marketing strategy and we look forward to repositioning the NEW CIS / SIC in the months to come. This progress sets us on the right course to fulfill an ambitious vision for University Sport in Canada. With enhancing the support of new and engaged corporate sponsors aligned with our vision and values and by harnessing new technologies to enhance our stakeholder interactions, we can elevate University Sport in Canada to new heights. Working together, we can increase revenues, generate new fans and position University Sport in Canada at the top of the sport landscape. I look forward to engaging you in these exciting conversations, to benefit from your experience and wisdom all of which I will need to realize this vision. I hope that you enjoy your week with us.

BLG NOMINEES AND AWARD WINNERS
SPORT CHAMPIONSHIPS BLK
P187
CIS and national law firm Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) established the BLG Awards in 1993 to recognize the top female and male athletes from CIS-affiliated universities. Each university nominates one male and one female athlete who have demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship, leadership qualities and athletic accomplishments. CIS thanks Doug and Lois Mitchell for their continued support of this event. One male and one female nominee are then chosen to represent each of the four regional associations: Atlantic University Sport, Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, Ontario University Athletics and Canada West Universities Athletic Association. CIS congratulates the eight nominees for the 2015-16 season: Atlantic University Sport

FISU Competing on the international stage is a defining moment for any athlete. CIS is proud to offer student-athletes with international competition opportunities at both winter and summer Universiades, as well as single-sport world university championships. These unforgettable experiences provide student-athletes with a wealth of shared experiences with their cohorts around the globe, along with innumerable action-packed moments as they represent both their universities and their country. International opportunities take place through the International University Sports Federation (FISU), which is recognized by the International Olympic Committee. FISU coordinates a membership of 170 national university sport organizations. From July 3-14, 2015, a delegation of 332 athletes, coaches and support staff, five referees, four FISU Committee Members and one FISU Young Reporter represented Canada at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea. The 28th Summer Universiade featured 12,885 participants from 143 nations and featured 21 sports; Canada participated in 16. Team Canada was comprised of 234 athletes and 98 staff members representing 80% of CIS member institutions.

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS' REPORT To the Members of Canadian Interuniversity Sport We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Canadian Interuniversity Sport, which comprise the statement of financial position as at March 31, 2016, the statements of operations, changes in net assets and cash flows for the year then ended, and notes, comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information. Management's Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors' Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on our judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, we consider internal control relevant to the entity's preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity's internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

INTRODUCTION FINANCIAL STATEMENTS BLK
CANADIAN INTERUNIVERSITY SPORT Notes to Financial Statements Year ended March 31, 2016
The mission of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (the “Organization) is to enrich the educational experience of the athlete through a national sports program that fosters excellence through quality educational and athletic experience, unity of purpose, respect for autonomy, integrity and fair play, trust and mutual respect, equity and equality of experience. The Organization is a Registered Canadian Amateur Athletic Association under the Income Tax Act (Canada), and is not subject to income taxes. Effective September 4, 2014, the Organization continued its articles of incorporation under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act. 1. Significant accounting policies: The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations and include the following significant accounting policies: (a) Revenue recognition: The Organization uses the deferral method of accounting for contributions for not-for-profit organizations. Restricted revenue is recognized as revenue in the year in which the related expenditure is incurred. Unrestricted revenue is recognized as revenue when it is received or becomes receivable. Membership fees are recognized as revenue in the period in which they become receivable. (b) Internally restricted RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) student-athlete fund: The fund will be used as directed by the Board. (c) Internally restricted reserve: The reserve was created to provide financial stability for the Organization and is not available for other purposes without approval of the Board of Directors. (d) Internally restricted for special initiatives: This fund is to be used for special initiatives and disbursements are approved by the Board of Directors. (e) Tangible capital assets: Tangible capital assets are recorded at cost less accumulated amortization. Amortization is provided on the straight-line basis over three years.

CANADIAN INTERUNIVERSITY SPORT Notes to Financial Statements (continued) Year ended March 31, 2016
1. Significant accounting policies (continued): (f) Sport Canada contributions: Contributions received from Sport Canada are subject to specific terms and conditions regarding the expenditure of the funds. The Organization's accounting records are subject to audit by Sport Canada to identify instances, if any, in which amounts charged against contributions have not complied with the agreed terms and conditions and which therefore would be refundable to Sport Canada. Adjustments to prior years' contributions are recorded in the year in which Sport Canada requests the adjustment. (g) Financial instruments: Financial instruments are recorded at fair value on initial recognition. Equity instruments that are quoted in an active market are subsequently measured at fair value. All other financial instruments are subsequently recorded at cost or amortized cost, unless management has elected to carry the instruments at fair value. The Organization has elected to carry investments at fair value. Transaction costs incurred on the acquisition of financial instruments measured subsequently at fair value are expensed as incurred. All other financial instruments are adjusted by transaction costs incurred on acquisition and financing costs, which are amortized using the effective interest rate method. Financial assets are assessed for impairment on an annual basis at the end of the fiscal year if there are indicators of impairment. If there is an indicator of impairment, the Organization determines if there is a significant adverse change in the expected amount or timing of future cash flows from the financial asset. If there is a significant adverse change in the expected cash flows, the carrying value of the financial asset is reduced to the highest of the present value of the expected cash flows, the amount that could be realized from selling the financial asset or the amount the Organization expects to realize by exercising its right to any collateral. If events and circumstances reverse in a future period, an impairment loss will be reversed to the extent of the improvement, not exceeding the initial carrying value. (h) Use of estimates: The preparation of the financial statements requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenue and expenses during the year. Actual results could differ from those estimates. These estimates are reviewed annually and as adjustments become necessary, they are recognized in the financial statements in the period they become known.
