Welcome to the Copenhagen International School Athletics Program for 2013-2014. The Athletics Program provides opportunities for students to develop their potential in athletic activities while participating in a competitive and fun environment. The Athletics Program aims to • • •

• •

foster in students the life skills of collaboration, commitment, discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship. educate students about the importance of an active, healthy and balanced lifestyle. promote and develop the IBO Learner profile that guides our daily interaction with our athletes. Those principles guide our students to be Enquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced and Reflective. instill in our students a passion for sport that promotes a positive and inspiring school environment have fun.

To achieve our objectives, CIS is a member of NECIS, the Northern European Council of International Schools. NECIS organizes international tournaments where schools from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg meet to compete in a variety of sports. Seasons will also consist of friendly matches with local international schools and Danish clubs.

Participation in the NECIS Athletics Program is open primarily to grade 5 through grade 12 although swimming and track and field may include athletes from grade 4. In general athletes must commit to two practices a week, the occasional weekend practice or friendly match with Hamburg, Herlufsholm, local Danish teams and the culminating NECIS tournament.

CIS prides itself on the quality of our coaches who not only teach the fundamentals of the sport but also represent the values espoused above. Our coaches are also vigilant in securing the safety of our athletes when they travel to the international venues.

Finally, refer to this booklet as the seasons progress as many of the questions that might arise will be answered. If you have any further queries, please email me at robertreynolds@cis.dk.

The Athletics Department looks forward to another fun and rewarding experience this year as we develop the potential of our athletes! Robert Reynolds Athletics Director Copenhagen International School robertreynolds@cisdk.dk | Hellerup +45 39 46 33 00 Mobile: +45 27 24 48 05

NECIS stands for the Northwest European Council of International Schools. It is a sports council that exists to provide opportunities for international schools located in North Western Europe to meet in specified tournament activities on a competitive basis promoting healthy competition, sportsmanship, and full participation. Member NECIS Schools:

Copenhagen International School Antwerp International School International School of Amsterdam International School of Bonn International School of Luxembourg The American School of The Hague International School of D체sseldorf American International School of Rotterdam International School of Hamburg International School of Stavanger Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska L책roverket

(CIS) (AIS) (ISA) (ISB) (ISL) (ASH) (ISD) (AISR) (ISH) (ISS) (SSHL)

The purpose of the Northwest European Council of International Schools is to provide a venue for athletes from member schools to compete in an environment that is safe, challenging, professional and educational. Each athlete is given the opportunity to demonstrate her or his best athletic ability while maintaining a spirit of respect and co-operation with fellow athletes from various international backgrounds.

Each event involves students and adults in their different roles: these include the athletes, coaches, sports officials and spectators. All those involved in the event are expected to uphold the same spirit of respect and co-operation. This spirit is demonstrated by fair play among athletes, positive encouragement from coaches, impartial judgments from officials and respectful enthusiasm from spectators. The positive behaviour of the adults is crucial to the successful educational aspect of the tournament. The adults act as models for our athletes. Therefore profanity, deliberately making noises that distract and interfere with the performance of a competing athlete, the condemnation of coaches or officials, or any behaviour that is disrespectful or degrading to the NECIS standard of sportsmanship, jeopardizes the purposes of the NECIS organization and, most of all, jeopardizes the quality of the experience for the athletes. As the event ensues, we ask that all of our parents, coaches, officials and athletes keep this essential purpose in mind.

The NECIS Athletics program supports full participation in sport. Although we cannot take all students to tournament, we will work to provide games with local schools for all students who participate in our program. We are developing the program more and more and are striving to begin entry into more local competitions as a means to increase participation throughout the wider student body. Currently, the NECIS Athletics Program and the After School Activities program are working together through the Mini-Hawks that seeks to develop skills in grade 2-5 students. Finally, the exception to the rule of full participation is Swimming and Tennis teams that must be selected following a try out period. This is due to restrictions on facilities.

The Athletics Program is open to all students from grades 5 through 12 although Swimming and Track and Field may include athletes from grade 4.

Due to the restrictions on the size of the teams and how many teams that a school may enter into the NECIS tournaments, students must try out and compete for selection to the final team. Coaches will make the final selections usually within several weeks. The following is the criteria that coaches use when determining who makes the tournament team: • • • •

Commitment Ability to play the sport and to work with others Attendance and ability to participate in the friendly games and tournament Contribution to the team’s positive spirit

Swimming selection is special and is determined by boy/girl ratio, age groups for each event, ability, stroke technique and lap times. NECIS restricts the size of teams for entry into the tournaments to the following: • • • • • • • • • •

Soccer teams Volleyball teams Basketball teams Softball team Rugby teams Tennis team Golf Team Cross Country Swimming team Track and Field team

(5 boys, 5 girls)

The teams are divided up into the following age bands. The age is determined by how old the athlete is on the 1st of September of the current academic year. Finally, The Under 16 and Under 19 year olds are combined by age and divided into two teams of Junior Varsity and Varsity based on ability level. • • • • •

Please note that practices times can change from season to season due to a number of factors such as availability of facilities, the time of the year, coaches availability and a need to work flexibly with other school programs and school meetings. Locations for some sports are still being determined. Many teams often take advantage of Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday optional practice times.

Listed below are the practice schedules for the upcoming school year. To find the location of the practice facility, please refer do the following CIS webpage, “Athletics” link, “Team Pages” where you will find a link “Event Locations”. The commitment made by players to a team upon completing signup and payment should be taken seriously by all. All players are expected to be at training sessions each week. The continued communication with coaches directly at training or via email (which is listed on their team page) is essential throughout the season.

Known absences or a follow up mail for missed sessions is the responsibility of the player and should be done as a courtesy and to assist coach and team. Finally, we know that senior school students can be at times under stressful deadlines. We will offer support when required. Responsible communication is the only thing required!

Each sport offered at CIS has a base cost of 500 DKK with the exception of Swimming which is 1500 DKK. Payment of this base fee allows players access to the season’s coaching and local games. The season fee is a non-refundable. The base fee is charged after the first two to three weeks of try outs in order to give students time to see if they wish to continue on with the sport.

Players chosen to represent the school for friendly games with Hamburg or Herlufsholm and the final NECIS tournaments will be billed at the conclusion of the season. Please note that if a family is unable to meet the cost of the tournament, contact the Athletics Department at robertreynolds@cis.dk so that we can discuss options. Students are not precluded from participating in NECIS due to financial constraints. • NECIS tournaments – 2500-3500 DKK

• Hamburg Friendly Games - 600 DKK (When travelling to Hamburg • Herlufsholm - 300 Dkr

As part of the Athletics Program, we often have matches with other international schools such as the International School of Hamburg and Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska Låroverket ISH is the closest NECIS school to CIS, and we often have exchanges with them in soccer, volleyball, and basketball.

In order to keep the costs of these weekends down, we ask that CIS parents host visiting athletes in the same way that their son or daughter would be hosted when they travel to ISH or Sigtuna. We expect that parents of team members be available to host. At the U12-14 level, CIS parents must host two visiting athletes. At the JV and Varsity level, parents must only host one visiting athlete. Hosting involves the following: • • • • •

Collecting the visiting athlete after he or she has competed on the Friday evening Providing dinner and entertainment on Friday evening Providing a bed to sleep in, breakfast and a packed lunch on the Saturday morning Making sure that the visiting athlete arrives to his or her match in plenty of time Ensuring the safety, security and happiness of the visiting athlete

Please do not think that you need to go to any special measures to entertain or eat out with your guest(s) unless you wish to do so.

We ask that those teams who will be travelling away to think about the effort that the hosting family may be going through and suggest that athletes take a small gift as a token of thanks; something Danish is often appreciated. For the Under 12, 14 and 15 teams, hosting parents must chaperon at all times.

For the JV and Varsity teams, the hosting parents are to decide whether or not students may be allowed out unchaperoned in the evening. Parents should take into account the age(s) of the student(s) they are hosting when making this decision. The NECIS Organization strongly recommends that visiting students who are under the age of 16 should not be allowed out unchaperoned in the evenings.

If parents do allow their guest(s) to go out unchaperoned, they must be accompanied by the CIS student, and they must be back in the house by 23:00 hours. In addition, when making hosting arrangements, Athletic Directors must make every effort to separate grade 9 and 10 students from grades 11 and 12 students. For further information about the rules that govern hosting, please go to the “Athletics” link on the CIS Homepage and read about hosting.

In the past, the Athletics Department issued uniforms and track suits to team players only to be worn for matches and tournaments. Last year a new program was instituted in which team members were required to purchase their own uniforms. At this point in time, we plan on having team members purchase their uniforms for the Soccer and Volleyball seasons. We will be reviewing the success of the Online Web Store and will determine if the program remains in place for subsequent sports. We thank you for your understanding!

Each year the Athletics Department has been fortunate to have parents help out by providing sponsorship through the companies that they work for. In the past the Swimming team was outfitted by DHL who provided deck wear and by Chevron who provided swim suits and bags. As a result, our team looked sharp as they exhibited a strong sense of identity. This year we are in need of replacing all basketball uniforms and providing swim kit. If your company would like to sponsor any of these teams, please contact me at robertreynolds@cis.dk.

This year CIS is again hosting the NECIS Track and Field Meet, May 23-24, 2014. This NECIS tournament will be free to CIS students. Since the event follows the Girls Soccer, Boys Rugby, Tennis and Softball tournaments held May 15-17, athletes who participate in these tournaments are also able to participate in the Track and Field Meet. The Athletics Department will be setting up a program this year to farm a team for the Track and Field Meet. Hence, if your child/teen is interested in Track and Field, please register by using the “NECIS Online Registration” link found on the “Athletics” link on the CIS Homepage.

If your child or teen wishes to participate in the NECIS Athletics Program, then please go to the “NECIS Sign-ups” link found on the “Athletics” link on the CIS Homepage and register. Please have your son or daughter sign up for all sports that he or she is planning on trying out for. If your son or daughter decides to later not join the sport, this is fine. We need the information in advance to guide the Athletics Department in organizing logistical concerns such as transportation and hotels for upcoming friendly matches and tournaments.
