2008-2009
Head Teacher We have enjoyed an exciting fun packed year at Compass International School and it is wonderful to be able to finish our year with the publication of our school’s first Yearbook. I want to say a very big THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed – students, staff and parents – to putting together this record of our school year. This is a memory that you will be able to look back on for many years and remember the great times that you had at school in Doha. Our school has seen so much growth and development over the last few years, time seems to have flown by. We are grateful for all the support and assistance we get from the community and we hope that this will deepen and grow over the coming years. Our new School Consultative Group has helped us to work even more closely with parents and I would like to thank the SCG members for their contributions over the last year. Our teachers, learning assistants and support staff are the life blood of the school. Their dedication, professionalism, enthusiasm and support are what make Compass such an exciting and vibrant learning environment. We believe that we have the best staff in the world and I am sure that you will join me in thanking them for their hard work over the last year. Life in an international school is all about change – people join and leave our community on a regular basis. To all those leaving this year, we wish you a safe and prosperous future and hope that you will keep us updated on your travels around the world in new places or even back in your home country. Thank you for a great year at school. John Todd Head Teacher

Miss Kavanagh We’ve had a wonderful year in EY1 Kavanagh, we’ve learned a lot, had some fun and made new friends along the way. When doing the Sand and Water unit in October, we learned about waterproof materials. We all dressed up in rain gear. We are all set for the next rain shower in Doha! Later in the year, when learning about clothes, we put on a fashion show. We really enjoyed learning to walk confidently like models down the catwalk. Don’t we look well in our outfits?
Salman Al Thani
Our teddy bears came to school when we studied bears. Teddy enjoyed school, he came with us to P.E. and computers and learned a lot during his week long visit to our class. In this picture, we took teddy to the library where Mrs. Jones read us all an exciting story. One of the school events we thoroughly enjoyed in EY Kavanagh was sports day. We learned to work together in a team. We liked all the activities immensely. We were very tired at the end of the day. We ran, hopped skipped, jumped and had great fun.
Rebecka Roald
Our mums and dads were very proud of us when we put on our assembly. We were studying bears and we shared some of learning with everyone. We sang some songs and acted out the story of Goldilocks. We studied food recently, and took a trip to a restaurant where we all made our own pizza. We enjoyed eating our yummy pizzas. Miss Kavanagh

During this year we have had lots of fun as we have learned many things. We have enjoyed doing some wonderful activities to help us learn. During International week we all learned about Africa. We learned about the animals and the people who live there. We also all dressed up in clothes from our own countries so that we could celebrate the diversity within our class. We all come from different countries and it was very interesting to share some of our traditional clothes. Two of our classmates who come from South America took part in the Latino dance in front of the whole school. They looked fantastic and did a brilliant job too! We had an exciting day when the Porsche driving school came to visit. They taught us all about road safety and we learnt how to drive a car. Mind you some of us forgot to look at the signs as we rushed around the roads and knocked Mrs Mclean over! Another fabulous day was when Bob the builder came to visit. He even brought Wendy too. We learned how to build a house and had great fun knocking in nails and building walls. During maths day we were learning all about numbers and made some great hats to show everyone how old we were. We also learned to make patterns and created some of our own. Some of the children had this to say about what they have learned in EY2 Mclean: ‘I have enjoyed learning to read,’ said Madelein and Humaid. ‘I loved playing and dressing up,’ said Jip and Mohammed. ‘My favourite thing to learn was how to swim,’ agreed Riyadh, Mariam and Isabella. Noah loved to learn to write and Indy enjoyed learning everything! All of the children agreed that they learnt a lot about animals and shopping when they went on their trips. I have to agree with the children that it has been a challenging but great year with loads of learning and fun.

Mrs. Gould The children’s memories. What a fantastic year we have had together! A year were we have all learned to become more independent, learned to swim and learned to read. We have been so busy learning and whilst doing that we have done so many exciting and enjoyable things! Our classroom has been a house, an airport, a flower shop, an estate agents, a supermarket and even a jungle. And what fun we had role-playing in all of them. We enjoyed trips to Aspire Zone, Doha Zoo, Carrefour and our teacher’s house and Bob the Builder even came to visit us. The ambulance men also came to school too and we loved making the noise the ambulance makes whilst we drove around in it. This year we have enjoyed reading a variey of stories and we especially loved making pancakes when we studied The Big Pancake story. In Book Week we dressed up as our favourite book characters and even came to school in our pyjamas. We proudly performed for our parents in our assembly on Happy Hat Land and showed our work in our Presentations of Learning. On Science Day, we had an eggciting time doing egg experiments and we got to dress up like scientists. Sometimes we have been silly bananas this year, even our teachers sometimes were, but mostly we have all been great friends!

Mrs. Rebollo EY2 Rebollo have had a wonderful year learning through the I.P.C. in many different ways. First we learnt each other’s names as all of us were new to Compass. Most of us speak English as a second language so we began by learning English and Maths through songs for example by singing “5 Fat Sausages” : We then began exploring outside the classroom and found the swimming pool and waited excitedly for us first dip!: Then we started having exciting entry/exit points in IPC. On October 25th (United Nations Day) we to our teacher’s house and planted 80 petunias in her garden and helped her with the gardening. Our mummies and daddies came too and helped us plant them .We went back too, as the exit point for “Houses and Homes” to make sure Mrs. Rebollo was looking after them properly and watered them and helped her a bit more with the gardening: Some mummies came on that trip and others too (to the zoo, and Carrefour) and they also came to read to us in Book Week. We were read stories from all over the world –where our Mummies and Daddies are from -and we may or may not have been born and brought up… …and made Warrior hats out of Origami with our Japanese Mums during International Week: Finally, we want to tell you about our latest entry point (to the unit: Going Places”) when we received a visit from a host country ambulance and the crew showed us inside and then took us for a ride around the campus with the sirens on-we’re not a bit worried about having an accident now-we know we’ll be in good hands.

Mrs. Taylor Mrs Taylor’s Year 1 class has had a fun year. We began the year by getting to know each other well and forming new friendships. We were happy to hear about each others’ home countries and we had fun trying to find them all on our class World Map. Many more children joined the class throughout the year and each was welcomed and their photograph and country flag added to our map. By the end of the year, we had 13 different flags and lots of friends! These are some of the highlights of the year that we all enjoyed together • During Book Week, lots of our mums and dads came to read us stories in different languages! At the end of the week, we all got dressed up as our favourite book character. It was great fun! • One of our favourite trips was when we went to the Fruit and Vegetable market. We had been learning about Healthy Eating so we went to buy things for a tasty vegetable wrap and a fruit kebab. Then we came back to prepare and eat them. Yummy! • When we did our entry point for our Clothes Unit, we all got dressed up in the clothes that we would wear in our home countries. Lots of us from cold countries had jackets and jumpers and hats and gloves on! It was strange to wear these types of clothes here in Qatar where it is usually so hot. • During our Transport Unit, two very exciting things happened. First, we went to visit The Sheik Faisal Museum to see his huge collection of old cars, trucks, motorcycles and boats. A few weeks later, Porsche cars came to visit to help us learn about road safety. We had a great time in their little cars!

Mrs. Shave Welcome to our class. We have been together since September and have had a busy and exciting time learning and having fun. In October, we travelled by bus to visit the Fruit and Vegetable Market in Doha. We were able to walk around the market, looking at, smelling, touching and tasting the various fruits and vegetables on offer. The children bought a selection of their favourite fruit and vegetables and once we arrived back at school, we made fruit kebabs and vegetable wraps – yummy! The children didn’t realize how much they enjoyed eating - and learning about - healthy food! In November, our IPC topic was all about ’Dressing Up’. The children all came to school dressed in their national costumes or in the clothes that they would normally wear in their home countries . They enjoyed learning about all the different types of clothes worn in hot and cold countries around the world. The children thought they looked fantastic in their clothes and were proud to show them to their classmates. In February, we were off on another school trip to Shahaniya – why? To visit Sheikh Faisal’s Museum, which is about 20km outside Doha. We had a fantastic opportunity to look at his wonderful collection of antique cars. They were a hit, as were the trucks, motorcycles and dhows. The children produced some amazing observational drawings of their favourite forms of transport. Our most recent event was our Science Day. We had a fun-filled day learning about balloons and eggs. The children came to school dressed as ‘mad scientists’ ready to investigate. At the end of the day, the children enjoyed finding out how you could tell if an egg is raw or cooked – do you know?

Mrs. Spragg Another year in MP1-Spragg has flown by. We have seen a few changes throughout the year. We started in September with seventeen smiling faces, eleven of those were brand new to Compass School. As the year went on, Anya, Harris, Nafisa and Mathias came to join us and we sadly said goodbye to Keagan, Marcus and Brandon. We are very proud of how far each child has come this year and I hope that they are all very proud of their own achievements as well.
Our learning this year has focused around ‘All About Me’, ‘Clothes’, ‘Day and Night’, ‘Transport’, ‘Toys’ and ‘Celebrations’. As I write this we are hoping to Celebrate the end of a fantastic year of learning with a great party in true Compass style.

Miss Daigneault On Science Day the class dressed up as Mad Scientists. We got to blow the yolk out of eggs without cracking the shells, YUCKY! We tried to put 3,4 even 5 dictionaries on top. IT WORKED! We were all Mad Scientists. Nukaiya and Hazuki We blew the inside of the egg into a pot, the we taped the eggs together. Then we put the dictionairies on top. Six eggs can hold 4 dictionaries because of the arch! Ghalia and Paulina We made 2 little hole in eggs, at both ends. We blew the middle of the eggs out so it was empty. Then we tried to see if 6 eggs could hold 4 dictionaries. The eggs were strong enough to hold the dictionaries because of the arch. We went to Aspire. We learned about healthy food. We saw the swimming pool, it was big! We ran on the football pitch, it was huge! We played in the sports hall with the wheelie boards. We had fun! David and Charles In our class assembly, we read a funny story, UP UP UP by Robert Munsch we used actions to make it more intersting. We worked very hard to learn the story. Zacharia She climbed on the refridgerator. She went Up up up .... faaaallll down! Pim On Maths Day we were looking for shapes around the school. Some of them were in the playground. After that we were looking for all the shapes. Some were hard but some were easy. Scott-Lee and Millie Durning International Week, we saw food from different countries. We ate chips and macaroni and donoughts for our treat. We ate cookies, we aslo had a Mexican drink. Billal and Tobias During International Week we read a Philippine story, we did some paintings about it. We practiced a little play about it and we showed our pictures while we did it. We loved it. The Lion Class had a fantastic, amazing, brilliant, fabulous and wonderful year. We laughed in the face of adversity. We fell and got back up again - better than before. We cried when old friends Carolin, Louis, Josh, Scott and Kate said goodbye. We rocked our assembly and every other day too. We shone brightly like the stars we are…and we learned. How we learned! During English we wrote massive lies about why we didn’t read our books, strove diligently to earn our Pen Licenses, collectively read more than 3,500 books and sent letters of friendship to children in China. We added and subtracted, multiplied and divided and spent and saved in Math. But most importantly of all we Knocked each other Out…everyday! We threw eggs from rooftops with abandon, fiendishly put plants in cupboards with no sunshine and melted plastic milk bottles and bound them with string…all in the name of Science. We loved Music with a passion. We wrote and performed new, improved tunes for the movie Kung Fu Panda, designed and built our own instruments, sang Chinese, Welsh and even English songs…and bowed in awe before the Hall of the Mountain King. I would like to say a huge thanks to all the magnificent, incredible, talented children in the Lion Class. It was a very challenging first year for me in Qatar with a new city and school to contend with - but you all made it so worthwhile. If I had one wish it would be to freeze time so I could keep you forever. The Year 2 Lions, truly the BEST Class in the World! Good luck for the future team!

Our class includes children from more than twelve different countries and this has been very helpful when learning about International issues and different societies. We started the year by finding out what kind of learners we are and our class held the first assembly in school. Next we were learning about water supply and had great fun carrying out experiments on water, to see if things could dissolve. We held a treasure hunt in the gardens to start off our treasure unit and drew some huge maps with coordinates to hide our buried treasure. Book week was the highlight of the term; we held a storytelling evening and Val Bloom taught us about poetry. Everybody loved the character parade and DEAR(drop everything and read). In spring term we started our unit on volcanoes and earthquakes. That was exciting-Mrs Markey announced that we were expecting an earthquake in Qatar and we had to set up our classroom as a Disaster Relief Centre. We taped the windows, made lists of supplies and made our own news broadcasts. We heard stories from people who had lived in earthquake zones and made our own erupting volcano. The highlights of this term were the MP2 sleepover where we played games, watched a film then slept in school; and International week where we learned about Scotland , performed a song in Gaelic and some Scottish dancing. This term has to be the best-chocolate is our theme and we have been tasting lots of it -all for the sake of learning too! We also held a chocolate bake sale to raise money for the Daraja School in Kenya and that was hard work, but very worthwhile. We recently had a Science day and had a smashing time-with lots of eggs of course- very eggciting. Mrs. Djedid

Mrs. Hasselkvist We learned about Aztec chocolate and we made the chocolate. Aztec chocolate tastes different than our normal chocolate; it tastes a bit like plain chocolate. We also made Aztec bowls out of clay and we looked at their patterns and colours. -Hussan, Jess, Caitlin We had a Bake Sale to gather money for a school in Kenya that our school is supporting. As a year 4 team we made over three-thousand QR and as a class we made 1700 QR. Ewan did a funny dance to get people to come. -Karla, Sophia and Ruh-Ali We made a fake volcano erupt. We enjoyed the part when the volcano erupted all over the tray! We did a volcano assembly and we did a dance. -Daniel and Azim We went to watch an orchestra perform Peter and the Wolf. The music was very dramatic. We found the string section very invigorating. When the French Horne sounded the wolf appeared in our minds. The music was classical. Close your eyes and imagine it. -Kian and Abbey In language we learned about Advertising. The best thing on Advertising was when we did our own one and our favourite one was the laughing cow because it stands out and it has a good bold title. -Abdulaziz, Ewan and Jan Watze Mrs Hasselkvist’s class has worked on Sweden. Then we had a Swedish assembly, we sang : ‘sma grodorna’ (little frogs) and we danced around a midsummer pole. Abba is a really popular band, and comes from Sweden! -Alice, Nina and Hannah We’ve been on a trip to Aspire, which we enjoyed. We did a race on the giant football field and we saw different sports equipment. We had a lovely tour through Aspire. -Loes & Krispijn On science day we did eggcellent experiments with eggs. We tried to place an egg into a bottle but it didn’t work. We also tried to break a raw egg with the same pressure in our hands and it didn’t break! -Aya & Samantha

In MP3L we recently took some time out from our learning to reflect on things that have happened this year and to share our memories of life in Year 5. The list of fun events and activities seemed endless with trips to the orchestra, the museum, Aspire ,the Ceramic café and many more. But, as always, the students are best at summing up their feelings, so over to them….. “A lot of memories came up but I liked performing the play about Mars in our class assembly the best. I enjoyed it because I had some lines to learn, but not too many! This was the best year in school so far!” Ewout “The thing I enjoyed the most this year was the camping trip to the Inland Sea. It was a fun experience and I made a lot of new friends. Overall, this year has been awesome”. Eamaan. “My favourite memory since I came here was when we learned the ‘Chile Rap’ and performed it in front of the school. I enjoyed doing it because we got to dress up and it sounded cool and funny. I was very scared to get up on stage because I was new and I didn’t know very much. Now Year 5 has been one of the best classes I’ve ever had.” Lisa “My most exciting day was science day as we got to play with eggs and we got to drop an egg. I enjoyed all the experiments”. Saeed. “The best thing from this school year was the trip to the Inland Sea because of the talent show. The worst talent, but the funniest part was when Miss Leeman, Mrs Bartle and Mrs Markey started singing with their horrible voices!” Yo-lin. So apart from the terrible singing from the teachers, this has been a great year for MP3L and throughout all the fun and the learning we have, most importantly, as Joan commented, “made a good team!” Miss Leeman

Mr. Maher This school year has been a truly amazing for a number of reasons. For myself and eleven students of the class this has been our first experience in the Middle East. For many of these eleven it was also their first time of living outside their home country.
Over the course of the year our class has grown from twelve to eighteen. The atmosphere of the class has evolved as new students have arrived and contributed in their own personal way to the learning environment. As I look back, I believe the class which commenced the school year is quite different to the class finishing. Certainly the confidence of students has increased. Discussion in the class has become more robust as students are more willing to share their ideas. The students have developed very positive relationships highlighted by their ability to work cooperatively.
Students with English as an additional language, who were attending an English speaking school for the first time, were faced with significant challenges. Those students with English as a first language, as well as those more experienced with English, were truly inspiring in the way they interacted with these students and provided a safe and secure environment for them as they developed proficiency in English. The progress of these students has been amazing.

I feel tremendously privileged to being involved in the ‘learning journey’ which has taken place in MP3 Maher this year. Personally, I will cherish many memories from this year. Here is a selection of memories from the students.
I remember when we did the ‘Great Egg Drop’ on Science Day. My partners Ali and Faisal from Year Two packed so many materials into our box. Our egg still did not survive the fall from the second floor. Sarah Kelana I really enjoyed the assembly item we did for International Week. We learned about Argentina and we did a dance called the Tango. Some of the girls had to dance with boys. I really enjoyed the dance and the International Week assemblies. Tess

My favourite memory was when we went to Aspire because I really love sport. Mike
My favourite thing was the school trip to the inland sea at the beginning of the year where we stayed overnight. My friends played football on the volleyball court. We also had a talent show. Most people were too shy to do an act but some did. I hope we do it again next year. Aedan

Mr. Uddin It has been another exciting and adventurous year for us all in year 6 MP3. This year’s class has been the most amazing class I’ve taught, ever! It has been filled with great learning and fun experiences. I wish all the children the best for the future and hope they’ll return to Compass for a further year of exciting and enriching learning opportunities. Some of the children in Year 6 have written a short piece to share their memories and favourite experiences. Sheikh Faisal’s museum: MP3 yr. 5, 6 and 7 went to Sheikh Faisal’s museum and it was extraordinary! It was a gathering of things in Arabic history. We split into groups and went off exploring the big museum. When we finished going through cool rooms filled with artefacts we ate lunch and went home with exciting pictures and fun memories Maths day: Maths day was a blast! There were many activities, like the Middle East Maths Challenge. Students designed their own math logos for a school competition. It was obvious that there were many math magicians in the school. Science day: This year our science theme was ‘Eggs’. We did eggstraordinary eggs-periments. Luckily none of them eggploded!! The whole school sported fantastic scientist attires, topped off with a wacky assembly! ‘My favourite memory was during the camping trip, in the morning of the second day. We went sand boarding on a dune. Another favourite memory was when we had a pool party. -Aliff ‘The school has changed so much since I came here, and I’ve been here since the beginning. All of the events have been good, and coming to the end of the school year.... I couldn’t possibly find a better school!’ -Iona ‘This year was so good that it would be impossible to list the things I enjoyed most. I’ll definitely miss Compass, its students and it’s teachers.’ Emma ‘To ask for a single event would be impossible. I’ll obviously miss this school and I will never forget it.’ -Ishani

Mrs. Gibson If I could bottle the enthusiasm and energy of this class, then I would most certainly make my fortune!! Over this year, we have learned a lot and had loads of fun at some of our events like International week and school trips to Ceramic café and Aspire. I am looking forward to seeing many of my students in Year 8 in our Rayyan Campus. With strong personalities and plenty of determination, I am sure that they will all do very well in the future. (Mrs Gibson) International Week was full of surprises. Year 7 got to learn about China’s traditions and stories about China. We were also taught how to use chopsticks. We tried food from different countries and we were amazed by how different foods could be from the different countries it came from. We ended the week with an assembly, having an array of clothes worn by different children from different countries. Aspire was a trip we will never forget because of the games, interesting information and cool technology. It was a great experience to be inside the largest indoor stadium. Year 6 & 7 went to the Ceramic café. We all got given mugs and painted them. Afterwards, we ate at the Ceramic cafe. A few days later, the mugs came out of the kiln and we took them home. The whole school were split into 4 teams who competed against each other: red, blue, green, yellow. There were many exciting events such as the javelin, running, high jump and lots more. We even had a visit from 2 Al Gharaffa footballers. It was an excellent experience.
This year was amazing, being the oldest in the school and going on different trips like the camping trip. That was so cool – going in the sea and sleeping in the sandy desert. I will always remember this year Daphne

This year at Compass has been an overwhelming year. Sure it’s had its ups and downs but I have been able to accomplish a lot of things with the help of my teachers and friends. Arabic We at Compass International School pay very keen attention to teaching the Arabic language. As it is the most widely used, native language in Qatar, and as we are living in Qatar, it is essential to know how to communicate using this language, with natives or any other Arabic speaker. Here at Compass School there are four scheduled lessons per week for Arabic, each 30 minutes long. The curriculum we use is on that has been extracted from books written to teach the language to non Arabic speakers. It has also been presented in a manner which corresponds to not only the levels of the students, but also with the individual differences between them as to present a suitable curriculum for both first and second language speakers. The chosen curriculum also allows and helps students to express themselves and touch on their identity, traditions, age‌.etc. This allows the students to take advantage of their personal traits and identity traits to the maximum. Students learn colours, shapes, fruits, vegetables,, numbers, reading and writing. Students also learn about healthy and unhealthy foods, and how to preserve a healthy body through a healthy diet and meals including the Arabic breakfast. Students also learn about the different types of sports and identify a favorite sport drawing it in the process. It is also important to note that carrying out different activities to help teach the lesson not only makes teaching an easier, smoother process but also makes learning a much more enjoyable activity enriched with fun and personal involvement. Speech is also a very important aspect of any language. In Compass international School, every Thursday is the Arabic speech day where students are required to speak Arabic as much as possible throughout the day. This allows students to ask spontaneous questions about different object names and phrasing techniques or any other questions regarding different aspects of the language, whether they are punctual and grammatical, or cultural and traditional. Personally, I find it to be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience to teach this subject to both Arabic and non-Arabic speaking students. I wish good luck and the best of wishes to all students and hope to see you all next year. Have a wonderful summer vacation!

Vive le Français! Here are some of the topics we have learned about in French this year: food, clothes and fashion, calendar and weather, our world, animals. Year 1 and 2, we loved making and eating salad, creating a piñata, pretending to be different animals, singing songs about healthy food and body parts, dressing up in fancy clothes and telling the class what we are wearing, playing doctor. In Year 3 and 4, we had fun pretending we are weather forecasters, acting out sports we do, creating alien and monstrous animals, drawing our house and garden, singing a French rap song and playing shops. In Year 5, we really liked eating “tartines” when we learned about a French afternoon snack called “le goûter” and we liked role-playing a café scene. In Year 6, we enjoyed creating our own French calendars, dressing up in silly clothes and eating and drinking for a French breakfast. In year 7, we liked making necklaces and masks for carnival and creating “crazy restaurant” menus. We learned facts about the French language in the world and about some of the French speaking countries in different continents and their cultures. We did research and group presentations about different topics related to culture in France (food, fashion, history, Paris, art...etc.). In the Americas, we discovered the cultures of Quebec, Louisiana and French-speaking islands in the Caribbean Sea. In the African continent, we learned about cultures in West African countries (Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon...etc.), in north-west “Maghreb countries” (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia), and in the Indian Ocean Islands (Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Seychelles). We enjoyed making and eating crêpes (traditional French dessert) as well as making our own colourful masks and parading around the school for Mardi Gras. We loved making and eating couscous (traditional food from the Maghreb region).
English as an Additional Language Many of us, when we first arrive, are scared, quiet and a bit confused. Lost without language in a world where we don’t understand what is going on, we sit shyly in the corners of our classrooms, but as time goes by‌.
Lesley Walker
We have a lot of fun in EAL (English as an Additional Language). We create movies and voice threads, grow plants, study Egypt, space, and animals. We build structures, learn how to edit photos on the computer, and learn about toys, celebrations, chocolate, and much, much more. It has been an exciting and productive year. At all grade levels we have made great advances. We can now communicate our ideas, thoughts and feelings. We can read and write, explore and create. The EAL classroom is a place where we sing songs, draw pictures, play games, and use computers to help us better understand the topics we learn about with our friends. Mr. Raisdana, Mrs. Walker, and now Mrs. Todd help us gain confidence so we can be contributing members to our classrooms.

International Week Our first ever ‘International Week’ was a great success. It celebrated the diversity of cultures and nationalities within in the school. Everyone happily and actively participated from pupils to teachers, Mums and Dads and friends from within the various communities. The children commenced the weeks prior by making a doll dressed in their National Costume. The school provided a simple template and from there the creative talents began. We were astounded at the effort made by so many and the beautiful art work produced. The dolls were truly amazing and gave a taste of how colourful the whole event would be. Thereafter we began the opening ceremony with a parade with children dressed in National Costumes proudly waving their Country flags. We had nearly 50 different nationalities. Throughout the week we had an assembly each morning from the various mileposts. These highlighted the differences between the countries in each of the continents using things like songs, music and dance. During the week we had special guests give talks such as the Japanese Ambassador’s wife who came in to discuss the ‘kimono’. She showed us how to wear it and the many layers involved in its preparation. She also showed photographs from her native Japan. We had some more Japanese ladies kindly teach the children in the art of ‘Origami’ where the children learned that by simply and delicately folding paper they could produce a beautiful array of objects including warrior hats and animals. At various stages in the week parents also came in to tell stories in their mother tongue allowing children to hear a wide range of stories in their native language. The children were mesmerised with stories from around the globe. Of course we cannot forget two of the main highlights of the week involving food, a favourite with any nation! Our ‘International Buffet’ and our ‘Arabian Night’. For our International Buffet everyone had to provide their national dish. Delicious food from around the world was served. A huge thank you must be extended to all of those who provided a dish and made this event a huge success. Another huge thank you must go for Mrs Eeman Taweel who helped celebrate our host nation with an ‘Arabian Night’. She prepared an Arabian dance with the children which after many weeks of work they proudly displayed. There was a sumptuous buffet serving rice and meat served in traditional Arabic Style. Throughout the evening there was face painting for the children and henna tattooing. Thanks again to all who took part.

Student Council A Taste of CISD Student Council Activities Playground Equipment After much discussion in their own classes, the Student Council Reps, created a list of items that could help improve playtimes at CISD. Early this year lots of new playground equipment was purchased and playtimes have improved massively since then, according to the children asked at playtime. Paper Recycling • Paper is the main form of waste created by schools, making up at least a quarter of all its rubbish. • The Student Council wanted to do something about it so they spoke to Mr. Todd about buying some bins for recycling paper. • Next they held an assembly to launch the Recycling theme under the title ‘The 3R’s’- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle • They set up a paper collection scheme for each classroom by making ‘paper only’ boxes for the children and teachers to put used paper in. At the end of the first week the Student Council Reps went round and decided which class had done the best job at recycling. They were awarded a certificate in class and had an hour free time where the class could choose what they wanted to do. • Many pupils created posters to promote recycling • A box was also placed in the staff photocopying room and posters reminding teachers how to REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE Student Council Caps Two members of the Student Council wrote a letter to Mr. Todd asking him for money to purchase special Student Council caps. They were successful in persuading Mr. Todd and are now in proud possession of bright yellow caps with the school logo on and the Student Council name. The reason they chose such a bright colour was to make sure they stood out at playtimes so children know who they are and can ask them for help or offer suggestions for ways to improve their school. Ex Student Council Reps. Ex members –Over the year we have had a couple of members who were members of the Student Council for a period of time. Thay played their part in many activities. These children were Dave Chakravarty and Jessica Roscherr. We would like to thank them for their contributions.

My name is Jennifer Jones and I am the School Librarian. We have had a very eventful year in the Library, with the arrival of hundreds of beautiful new books. I have really enjoyed seeing the children throughout the school enjoying the books and I particularly love sharing a story with the younger children at Story Time.
I am Alison Borberg the School Nurse at Compass. My job involves attending to any health issues the children may have and being involved in health promotion in the classroom. The job has so far been a complete adventure but I enjoy the challenge and having time with the children. As well as being the School Nurse I am also PA to the Head Teacher which involves helping everyone out with all sorts of requests too numerous to mention.

As we come to the end of the third year at CISD and look forward to a new beginning with a second campus, it seems appropriate to take a look back on the events of the year. The school has added so many new and exciting things since September that are all designed to help our children learn well, enjoy life and exceed expectations. In MP 3 the children have worked and played hard. An MP 3 disco and camping in the desert were two of the highlights. Whilst for MP 2 a sleepover with lots of games and a movie along with their recent talent show ensured they were subject to great learning and great fun. In MP 1 the children and their families all happily clutched their teddy bears and wandered down to the woods (school grounds really) to share a Teddy’s Bear picnic with their friends and families from Early Years. They were also taught the ‘rules of the road’ by Porsche Driving School and got to try out Porsche pedal cars. In addition to this we have had visits from a circus skills company from the US, a poet originally from Jamaica, a story teller from Canada, the ambulance service and most importantly Bob the Builder and of course his lovely assistant Wendy! Children have had the opportunities to extend their learning through visits to Aspire Active, Sheikh Faisal Museum, the fruit and vegetable
market, Pizza Express, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, the beach at the Intercon Hotel, Ceramique Café, Doha Zoo and Carrefour to name but a few. With Book Week, Science Day, International Week, Maths Day and the fabulous first ever school production of ‘Scheherazade’ the children’s learning has taken many forms. Not wanting to leave the parents out we have held information evenings on Reading and writing at CISD, Maths and a very tasty evening about chocolate, not surprisingly one of the most popular IPC units! The setting up of the School Consultative Group, a parent representative group, has been a great development for the school which will continue to go from strength to strength and we thank them for all their support and hard work. Thanks also go to all our parents who are always such a tremendous support to all aspects of school life. My biggest thanks go to the children who are a real inspiration to us all and make Compass the truly exciting, international community it is. Watching them grow in confidence and blossom as the year has gone on is a privilege and they can certainly teach us all lessons. For me they really are the embodiment of “Learning Well, Enjoying Life and Exceeding Expectations”.
