THE ECOSYSTEMS WORKSHOP representing the dynamics of relations COMPUTATION IN ARCHITECTURE 2022/2023

THE ECOSYSTEMS WORKSHOP REPRESENTING THE DYNAMICS OF RELATIONS DATES: 20.09 - 23.09.2022 LOCATION: CITA STUDIO PHILIP DE LANGES ALLÉ 10, 1435 KØBENHAVN WORKSHOP LEADERS: DELPHINE LEWANDOWSKI NADJA GAUDILLIÈRE-JAMI PAUL NICHOLAS PARTNERS: TERRESTRIAL ECOLOGY SECTION UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN

URBAN DEVELOPMENT, RESPONSIBLE FOR NATURAL HABITAT MODIFICATION, IS TODAY A MAJOR DRIVER OF THE LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY ACROSS THE WORLD (IPBES, 2019). THE IMPACT OF BUILDINGS, RESPONSIBLE FOR 40% OF ALL GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS, IS DIRECTLY LINKED WITH THE BIODIVERSITY CRISIS THROUGH THE USE OF NATURAL LAND, AND THROUGH THE USE OF MATERIAL RESOURCES. THERE IS AN URGE TO BRING A RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE AND BIODIVERSITY CRISIS WITH NATUREBASED SOLUTIONS. ONE KEY IS TO UNDERSTAND AND TO INCLUDE ECOSYSTEMS IN THE ARCHITECTURAL AND URBAN DESIGN TO PROTECT WILDLIFE. THE RECENT AND INTERDISCIPLINARY FIELD OF URBAN ECOLOGY STUDIES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN URBANISATION AND ECOLOGICAL PROCESSES, SUCH AS THE IMPACT OF CITIES ON LIVING ORGANISMS. IT BRINGS USEFUL INSIGHTS FOR ARCHITECTS AND URBAN PLANNERS.

THIS WORKSHOP AIMS TO INTRODUCE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF ECOLOGY, TO BUILD CROSS-DISCIPLINARY KNOWLEDGE, AND TO EXPLORE THE REPRESENTATION OF ECOSYSTEMS WITHIN REPRESENTATIONS. ARCHITECTURE IS DEVELOPED THROUGH ITS REPRESENTATIONS. THEREFORE, TO INCLUDE ECOSYSTEMS, WE NEED TO FIND WAYS TO REPRESENT THEM. ECOSYSTEMS ARE DEFINED BY A BIOLOGICAL COMMUNITY OF ORGANISMS, THEIR PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT, AND THEIR INTERACTIONS. HOW CAN WE REPRESENT ECOSYSTEMS FROM AN ARCHITECTURAL PERSPECTIVE? HOW CAN WE REPRESENT THE DYNAMICS OF RELATIONS?
