2005-06 Outlook The 2005-06 campaign will see The Citadel, 2005 Southern Conference tournament runnerup, return four NCAA Qualifiers as well as seven Southern Conference placers. Coach Hjerling’s squad will look to build for the future after placing a strong foundation over the past seven years to re-establish the program as a power in the SoCon. The Bulldog grapplers will be led by seniors Sean Markey (141), Dan Thompson (165), and redshirt junior John Dickerson (184), while senior Travis Piccard (157) and junior Levi Duyn (149) redshirt in hopes of making a run at an All-American season in 2006-07. The Cadets will also welcome graduate transfer Mark Thompson (197) from Duke. Last season Thompson compiled a record of 27-11 and placed second at 197 in the ACC Championship. The Bulldogs also welcome a recruiting class that received honorable mention from W.I.N. Magazine. This group will look to make an immediate impact and will get their share of mat time during the season. Top prospects include Anthony Easter (125), Mike Fenton (125), Nick Orio (149) and Josh Summers (157). Another addition this season is assistant coach Joe Priv2
itere who replaces Ryan Lange on The Citadel’s coaching staff. Privitere, 1999 NCAA D II National Champion who holds the single-season win record at Binghamton (N.Y.), will work with the middle weight classes. The Citadel opens the season with The Citadel Open freshman tournament on Nov. 5. They will also take part in the East Stroudsburg Open, Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Southern Scuffle, Virginia Duals and the All-Academy Championships. The Bulldogs’ dual meet schedule includes seven home contests and opens up on Nov. 12 when they play host to North Carolina State and Newberry on Homecoming weekend. Duke, Campbell, Chattanooga, Appalachian State and Davidson will also make trips to McAlister Field House, while the Cadets will travel to Old Dominion, North Carolina, Greensboro, VMI and Gardner-Webb. The SoCon slate will open up for the Bulldogs when defending Champion Chattanooga comes to town on Jan. 24. The marquee match-up in that contest should be the 141-pound bout between The Citadel’s Sean Markey and Chattanooga’s Mike Keefe, both of whom are nationally ranked going into the season. The future looks bright for The Citadel, which will lose only four wrestlers following this season.

In 2001-02, the Bulldogs entered numerous tournaments with NCAA powerhouses and also wrestled dual meets versus Top 25 teams. Hjerling led The Citadel to scoring the most points since the SoCon’s 1967 Championship Team and best dual meet record since 1991. The Bulldogs had seven conference placers, five finalists, one SoCon champion and one NCAA qualifier. Rob Hjerling, 2004 Southern Conference Coach of the Year and a 1994 graduate of American University, is in his seventh season as head coach of The Citadel’s wrestling program. Hjerling has an overall record of 48-47-3, and a combined 31-14-1 over the last three seasons. After going 2-11-2 and 1-4 in the SoCon (5th of 6) his first season, Hjerling boosted the Bulldogs to 13-3 and 5-0 in the SoCon (1st of 6) in 2004. Under Hjerling’s Guidance, the 2005 squad placed second in SoCon and sent three wrestlers to the NCAA tournament to mark the sixth time in six seasons that the Bulldogs sent wrestlers to the National Championship and the fifth season with multiple qualifiers. They also had five other wrestlers earn spots on the podium. In 2004 the Bulldogs matched their highest ever winning percentage (.813) on their way to the school’s first SoCon wrestling championship since 1967. Hjerling’s grapplers included four individual conference champions in Ryan McClester (125), Dan Thompson (157), Keith Clifton (174) and Billy Linane (Hwt), all earning automatic bids to the NCAA Championship, while Sean Markey (133) earned one of the league’s at-large bids to bring the total number of Bulldogs in the NCAA’s to five. Hjerling directed the third place 2003 squad to the highest winning percentage, .813, in school history. The Hjerling led group saw two members, Keith Clifton (184) and Billy Linane (Hwt), win SoCon championships, while six others grappled to finish in the top three in the SoCon. With two conference champs and three runners-up, the Bulldogs sent four members of the 2003 team to the NCAA’s in Kansas City.

The 2003 squad also saw two grapplers make their way into the national rankings. The 133-pound Sean Markey finished the season ranked as high as 18th nationally by The Wrestling Mall, while 149-pound Travis Piccard saw his name make it to 19th late in the season by the same publication.
In 2000-01, there were six conference placers, two conference finalists, one SoCon champion and two NCAA qualifiers. The team was ranked 16th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Academic Top 25. During his first season (1999-’00) Hjerling had four conference placers, one conference finalist and one NCAA qualifier. The level of competition drastically increased with Hjerling at the helm. The team managed to go 5-15 and 2-3 SoCon (4th of 6). Hjerling came to The Citadel after serving the 1998-99 season as an assistant coach at George Mason University, where he helped the Patriots to a runner-up finish in the Colonial Athletic Association while coaching four NCAA qualifiers. Following Hjerling’s departure, George Mason had one of their best seasons yet, showing the superb recruiting that had been done during Hjerling’s time there. Hjerling spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, American, where he coached five NCAA qualifiers. He got his start in coaching at Manheim Township High School in Lancaster, Pa., serving the 1995-96 campaigns as an assistant coach. As a senior at American University, Hjerling posted a 28-4 overall record. In addition, the Lancaster, Pa. native captured the Colonial Athletic Association’s 158pound weight class championship, garnered CAA Most Outstanding Wrestler honors and earned a berth in the NCAA Championships. He completed his wrestling career with 69 victories. Hjerling is married to the former Megan Hoban of Cleveland, Ohio.
Jeff Ragan, a former All-American at Oklahoma State, is in his sixth season as an assistant wrestling coach at The Citadel. Ragan graduated from Oklahoma State in May of 2000 with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. A four-year letterman in wrestling, Ragan was a member of three Big XII Conference championship teams while posting an overall record of 101-43. As a senior, the Englewood, Fla. native won 31 matches and captured the Big XII Conference individual crown in the 125-pound weight class and finished sixth at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors. A four-time Big XII AllAcademic Team selection, Ragan was named the Oklahoma State Male Student-Athlete-of-theYear in 2000 and was tabbed to the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Academic AllAmerica team. In addition, he became the 19th wrestler in Oklahoma State history to register 100 career victories. Ragan also was a four-time freestyle All-American. In 1997 he captured a Freestyle Espior National Champion title and became a Junior World Team member, where he placed in the top 10. As a prep star, Ragan posted a 103-5 overall record at Lemon Bay High School, making three finalist appearances and winning a pair of Florida state championships, while earning Outstanding Wrestler honors as a junior and senior. Ragan finished graduate school at The Citadel in December of 2003 and also works in The Citadel’s mathematics department. He is married to the former Andrea Denise Clark. The couple has one daughter named Allie.
Marc Hoffer begins his third season as an assistant coach at The Citadel. Hoffer brings valuable national experience to a Bulldog team poised to make a move on the national scene. Hoffer, the all-time victory leader at American University, was a three-time Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Champion, as well as a three-time NCAA qualifier. He has two top-12 NCAA Tournament finishes and was ranked as high as fifth among Division I wrestlers. While at American, Hoffer was named the 1999 CAA Wrestler of the Year and was a two-time honoree as CAA Tournament Outstanding Wrestler. Hoffer came to The Citadel three seasons ago after competing internationally with the NWCA international team and at the East Regional Olympic Trials.
Joe Privitere, a 2003 graduate of Binghamton University, enters his first year as an assistant coach on The Citadel’s coaching staff after spending the last two seasons as a volunteer in the wrestling room. Privitere, the single season victory leader at Binghamton (38), was a Division II All-American his freshman year as a Bearcat and All-Conference in 2002 and 2003. In addition to his college career, Privitere was also the 1998 High School National Champion, 1999 FILA Greco All-American, 2000 FILA Greco World Team Trial Champion and the 2000 FILA Greco World Silver Medalist. Aside from his coaching duties, Privitere is also a graduate assistant in The Citadel’s Health, Exercise and Sport Science and Intramural Departments. He is currently pursuing a masters degree in health exercise and sport science.

The Citadel Places Second at SoCon Tournament McClester, Duyn and Piccard Advance to NCAA Championships Greensboro, N.C. - Senior Ryan McClester (133), sophomore Levi Duyn (149) and junior Travis Piccard (157) each won their respective weight classes and five other Bulldogs placed in the top three in their weight classes, but it was not enough to bring the team title back to Charleston as Chattanooga won the SoCon Wrestling Championships at Mat Jam, March 5, 2005, in front of 1,008 spectators at UNC Greensboro’s Fleming Gym. Chattanooga led all teams with 90 points, The Citadel had 81 to finish second and Greensboro finished third with 77. The Mocs had three champions including the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler in Jon Sioredas (165). Chattanooga’s Terry Brands also took home SoCon Coach of the Year honors. The Citadel and Greensboro also had three champions each and Appalachian had one. After a strong showing in the consolation finals, the Bulldogs pulled to within eight points of Chattanooga, 80-72. In the finals, The Citadel got within two points, 83-81, after Travis Piccard’s 157 pound victory, but Chattanooga went up 87-81 when Jon Sioredas secured the team title for the Mocs with his 21-9 major decision over Greensboro’s Mark Ring at 165 pounds. “All of our guys really battled hard,” said coach Rob Hjerling. “ We came in believing we could pull it off (the championship) but we just came up a little short.” “Considering the year we have had and our lack of depth due to injuries we wrestled hard and represented The Citadel well. “We are not content with the second place finish but we are very happy with the way our guys put it on the line. Especially the ones that ended up in the consolation rounds. They hung in and did not pack it up. “All of our seniors, whether or not they started all season, should be proud because they have been a part of this building process to get The Citadel’s wrestling program to a higher level of competition. I am very proud of them.” As the fifth seed, freshman Andrew McDonald opened the day for the Bulldogs when he lost to fourth seed Jeremy Adams from VMI by a 4-0 decision. McDonald
then pinned Davidson’s Patrick Coman at 1:40 in the consolation semifinals. In the consolation finals, McDonald used a late reversal to claim third place with a 2-1 decision in a rematch with VMI’s Jeremy Adams. Senior Ryan McClester advanced to the second round after receiving a bye as the No. 2 seed at 133. In the semifinals, McClester defeated Jim Avola from Davidson, 10-5. In the finals McClester faced Chattanooga’s Josh Keefe. The pair was scoreless through the first period and Keefe started the second in the defensive position. Keefe got on the board first with an escape with 1:29 left in the second. McClester started the third period in the defensive position and escaped 10 seconds in to tie the match at 1-1. That score held and the pair went to overtime. The deadlock held and the match went into the tiebreak with Keefe down for the first frame. McClester rode Keefe for the entire 30 seconds and started down for the second set. McClester escaped six seconds into the final frame and held off a late single leg attempt by Keefe to win his second SoCon title in a row and his third consecutive NCAA bid. At 141 pounds, freshman Michael Arias drew the third seed and beat sixth seeded Matt Leonard from Davidson by a 9-6 decision in the first round. Arias then lost a 2-1 decision to second seeded David Johnson from Greensboro to drop into the consolation bracket. In the consolation semifinals, Arias was pinned by David Metzler from VMI at 2:43. Sophomore Levi Duyn was seeded third at 149 pounds and defeated Davidson’s sixth seeded Benjamin Graham in the first round with a 13-4 major decision. Duyn scored a takedown as time expired in overtime in the semifinals to defeat second seeded Sam Alvarenga from VMI, 4-2. In the finals, Duyn faced Eric Burns from Appalachian State. Burns scored a takedown to go ahead first, but Duyn escaped three seconds later to trail 2-1. Duyn scoed a takedown of his own and added two back points. He added three more back points and ended the first period ahead 82. Burns chose the down position to start the second. Duyn turned Burns for two back points but burns got a reversal and cut the margin to six, 10-4. Duyn then escaped with 45 seconds left in the period to go up, 11-4. Duyn scored another takedown with 10 seconds left and finshed the second period up, 13-4. Duyn chose neutral to start the third period and Burns
19
secured a takedown with a minute remaining in the match but could not turn Duyn over and the Bulldog earned his first SoCon Championship and NCAA bid with a 13-6 decision. Junior Travis Piccard took a first round bye as the top seed at 157 pounds and then scored a 16-6 major decision over VMI’s Chris Hardy to advance to the finals. In the championship match, Piccard faced Chattanooga’s Jake Yost. Yost secured the first points of the match 35 seconds into the first period to go up, 2-0. Piccard escaped 40 seconds later to, trail 2-1. Yost started the second period in the down position and added another point with an escape with 49 seconds left in the second. Piccard secured a takedown at the end of the second and the pair went into the third frame tied, 3-3. Piccard started the final period in the defensive position and snuck out the back door for a reversal to go up, 5-3. Yost escaped to bring the score within one, 5-4, with 1:15 left. Yost got in on a single leg shot with 30 seconds left but could not secure the takedown before the pair went out of bounds with six seconds left. Piccard won the match by a 5-4 decision for his first SoCon Championship and first NCAA bid. Junior Braxton Harrison was seeded fifth at 165 pounds. He lost in the first round by a 13-5 major decision to Ajay Foreman, the fourth seed from Appalachian State. In the consolation semifinals, Harrison lost to Tommy Cunningham from VMI, 8-2. In the consolation semifinals, Thompson earned a 9-0 major decision over Corey Pendergrass from Appalachian to advance to the consolation finals. Thompson pinned Davidson’s Trebor Clavette at 2:13 to place third overall. Senior Keith Clifton, 184 pounds, took a third seed into the first round where he pinned sixth-seeded Morgan Koukopoulos of Davidson in 23 seconds. Clifton then lost a 5-1 decision to Appalachian’s second ranked Sean McIntosh. In the consolation semifinals, Clifton secured a spot in the third place match with a 16-0 technical fall over Jeff Sale from VMI at 6:37. Clifton placed third when he defeated Greensboro’s Scott Fisher, 8-2, in the consolation final. Freshman Darius Caldwell, the fourth seed at 197 pounds, opened action with a first round fall over fifth
20
seeded Jayson Powers from Davidson in 1:17. In the semifinal match, Caldwell was pinned at 6:17 by top seeded Daren Burns from Greensboro. In the consolation semifinals, Caldwell defeated VMI’s John Burton with a 9-1 major decision. Caldwell beat Appalachian’s Rocky Richey in the consolation final, 5-3. The redshirt freshman placed third in only his fifth 197-pound match of the season. Senior heavyweight Billy Linane took a number two seed and a bye into the second round where he beat third seed Wes Taylor from Chattanooga, 10-5, to advance to the finals. In the championship match, Linane squared off against top-seeded Ruebon Daniels from Appalachian State. The pair grappled to a 0-0 tie through the first period. Linane took the defensive position to start the second and Daniels rode him for the entire period. The third period started with Daniels in the defensive position, but he escaped 13 seconds in to go up, 1-0. Daniels added a takedown with 50 seconds left to go up, 3-0, but Linane escaped with 40 left to score his only point. Daniels added a riding time point and won the championship with a 4-1 decision.

Les Robinson Director of Athletics At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the curriculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson begins his sixth year as the Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his first five years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robinson’s skills as a proven fundraiser have already benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past five years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Conference men’s basketball history to earn league coach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson concluded a six-year term serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the NCAA’s most influential committees. The Committee is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, W.Va. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and seven grandchildren.
McAlister Field House Originally constructed in 1939 and renovated in 1989, McAlister Field House serves as the home of The Citadel’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs. The facility, which also houses the athletic department’s administrative offices along with locker rooms for the basketball and baseball teams, has a seating capacity of 6,000. When built in 1939, the facility was referred to as “The Citadel Armory,” and seated 4,500 for basketball games. In 2001, The Citadel annexed a women’s facility onto McAlister Field House. The women’s wing is home to offices and locker rooms for the women’s volleyball and soccer teams. Top to bottom, McAlister Field House is one of the top basketball, volleyball and wrestling arenas in the region for both participants and fans. Even though 6,000 fans can pack into McAlister Field House for a basketball game, no fan is further than 24 rows away from the court. In addition, consession stands and restroom facilities are located on both the first and second floors. With the seats pulled back, there are three full-size basketball and volleyball courts for practice. During inclement weather, The Citadel’s baseball, football, tennis and track teams use the facility. The Citadel has hosted three 6,000-fan “sellout” crowds in basketball since the building’s renovation in 1989, including games with Duke (1989), South Carolina (1997) and College of Charleston (1999). In January of 1998, 2002 and 2005, The Citadel and McAlister Field House hosted the annual All-Academy
Wrestling Championships. McAlister Field House served as the host arena of the 2002 and 2003 Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championships and is scheduled for the 2004 tournament. McAlister Field House has also hosted such entertainment acts as Dave Matthews, Widespread Panic, Bob Hope, Kenny Rogers and Patti LaBelle. Events that have utilized the multi-purpose building include WCW Wrestling, Charleston Cup Gymnastics Championships, Special Olympics, Moja Arts Festival Activities, Rotary/Red Cross Roundball High School Basketball Classic and assorted high school and college graduation ceremonies. A brand new floor was put in during the spring of 2001 and exhibits the new southern Conference Logo and “Spike,” the logo of The Citadel athletics.
Vandiver Hall Coaches’ offices, locker rooms and the Bulldogs’ wrestling room are all located in Vandiver Hall. Vandiver Hall was built in 1991 and is a multipurpose athletic complex.
