STONER’S BACK MotoGP M otoGP - V Valencia alencia Casey has the last word.
By Dick Knowles
C
asey Stoner finished the year in the manner that he started it-with a win. After looking unconvincing on Friday when the Mediterranean coast showered the MotoGP field with some unwanted rain, the Ducati squad found what they were looking for, the presence of the father of the Desmosedici; wheelchair bound Filippo Prezioso and his total familiarity with the bike paid off. Casey was sent out to take pole. The body language changed and all of a sudden he was looking like a contender for a Sunday win. There were so many sub plots to this weekends racing with all of the Spanish riders hoping to do well in front of one of the most enthusiastic (and largest) crowds of the year. Inter team rivalry was also alive and well, old Honda faithful Nicky Hayden leaving the team to join Ducati for next year and emphasizing his move with a slogan ‘No hypocrite. ’ A reference to the way that the Repsol Honda team is run- as a Dani Pedrosa benefit squad. Still it was Pedrosa that qualified second and seemed to be the only rider with the pace to match Stoner. What of Champion Valentino Rossi? Languishing down in tenth place he complained that they didn’t have the right tyre for either qualifying or the race. Tyres again? Of course this would be the last meeting for the brand that have been associated with Grand Prix racing for so long, Michelin out, having not even bothered to tender for next year’s one supplier rule. The change of rules also meant that this would be the last time that these superfast bikes would have the luxury of using special qualifying rubber for the one hour, one session that decides grid positions. One tyre supplier next year and no qualifiers. It was Dani Pedrosa that led the drag race from the line but Casey dived up the inside at the second To page 2/
corner and, at once, settled set about establishing a defendable lead (in case Valentino was on his way?) Valentino was on his way but, having sorted out Dovizioso, Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards could not make an impression on the gap to Dani Pedrosa. All of the riders in the leading positions were stuck in their own personal no-mans-land, with a gap to the rider in front of them and a comfortable gap to their pursuer. Stoner, Pedrosa, Rossi, Dovizioso, Hayden, Edwards in that order and therein lies the problem. The GP organizers feel that, à la Superbike, a levelling of the playing field will produce more competitive racing.Well what do you think? The laps wound down and that is the way the year has ended with Valentino Rossi securing his eighth title, Casey Stoner second and Dani Pedrosa third. Yesterday (Monday) the 2009 season starts with new rider/bike combinations taking to the popular Valencia track and some of the 2009 race models making their debut. The 250 race had a little more fire in it, but not much. There is a tremendous rivalry between the riders from Spain and Italy. Italian Simone Corsi had won the first race of the day so it was up to Alex Debon, Alvaro Bautista and Julian Simon to see if they could do something about the rampant Italian and new Champion Marco Simoncelli. The news that KTM are pulling out of the class seemed to motivate their riders as Finn Mika Kallio and Julian Simon charged to the front in an effort to prove that the Austrian bike is still a viable option for the class. All to no avail, first Simon went out with a technical problem, the normally placid Simon smacking his petrol tank in frustration (he obviously wanted to do well in front of ‘his’ crowd). Simoncelli was riding a neat tactical race, moving through with apparent ease. Alvaro Bautista was the opposite, struggling

/From page 1 with some kind of set-up problem, he would not pose a threat on this day. Mika Kallio was going to try though. Riding in his last race for KTM he was desperate to keep pace with Simoncelli; who knows, the Jimi Hendrix haired rider could make a mistake. It was Kallio that slid to the ground, a sad way to end the year from the previous Championship leader. Marco Simoncelli took the
win, a fine second place for next years MotoGP rider Yuki Takahashi, who was so keen to see his next years bike that he virtually elbowed Andrea Dovizioso off it at the end of the MotoGP race! Third was the struggling Bautista, ah well on to next year. As mentioned Simone Corsi fought off the Spanish Armada to take the 125win and also finished the season as he started - winning. What is the date for the first race of next year?

iaan van Niekerk (DCM AGA LG Red Bull KTM) and Brian Baragwanath (HST USA Yamaha) have bagged the overall motorcycle and quad titels already, but various other class championship titles and podium positions are still up for grabs. The battlefield will be the Ermelo Toyota 400 that will take place this weekend in Mpumalanga. Van Niekerk has won the 200cc Class champion while young Dillon Inggs (Shimwells Yamaha) is the 125cc champ, but the other classes will only be decided this weekend. All three the top riders in the Open Class stand a chance of winning this title. On points, Jean “Bollie” van Rooyen (Sadiba Out of Africa Campbell Kawasaki) is leading the class from Clayton Enslin (Natro Freight Motorite Shimwells Yamaha) and Gavin Louw (The Roost Kawasaki). The battle for the title in the 250cc Class will be between the current leader, Wynand Delport (Shimwells Yamaha) and Laurence Murton (Sadiba Out of Africa Campbell Kawasaki), both of whom who will also have to get rid of their worst score of the season. And af-
battle it out with Roberts to keep his . But even though there are titles up for grabs, it will be about winning the Ermelo Toyota 400 and this will be the aim for the 2007 winner, Enslin, who can score a hat-trick for 2008 if he can do so. But his team-mate, Gray Dick (Shimwells Yamaha), who does not stand a chance on any titles, will go all out to claim another victory for the season while Van Niekerk, who has won twice this season on the smaller 250cc four-stroke KTM, will be the dark horse. In the national quad category, two titles are also still up for grabs – the Pro Open Class and Senior Class. Baragwanath, who is also 2009 Pro 450 Class champion, will face stiff competition if would like to add another race victory to his list of four this year. Quite a few racers will aim for the overall laurels while most of them are also still fighting for a place on a podium or to finish the season between the frontrunners. The former multiple champion, Brendan Badenhorst (DCM AGA LG Red Bull KTM), who has won the Mafikeng Mini Desert and has worked him-

ter deducting the points, a mere eight points separate them… In the 200cc Class, Lanie van der Walt (KTM) will have no pressure as he is safe in second place, but only five points separate the next four riders – Gert Leenstra (ECS Natro Freight Alfie Cox KTM); Jarrod Blackman (Honda ORD Racing) and Brett Cummings (Sadiba Out of Africa Campbell Kawasaki) who share the same amount of points and Brett Lewis (KTM Cape Town) who has not competed in the last three events. The competition in the 125cc Class has been stiff throughout the season with Inggs winning three races and scoring podium positions at the rest (except for the KZN event which he could not finish) and Ruan Roberts (DCM AGA LG Red Bull KTM) winning the rest. Second-placed Brandon Bouwer (Ramco Suzuki) was Mr Consistency and will
self into the eighth place on the overall listing after only three races, will be one of his main rivals although it will be his first attempt at the Ermelo Toyota 400. Only two other riders have scored a victory this year – Enrico da Silva (HST USA Suzuki) won in Botswana while Leander Pienaar (Team ABSA Can-Am DS450) won the Quad Roof of Africa. The Scholar Pack – Da Silva; Chris Meyer (Salley’s Yamaha), who is second overall as well as in the Pro 450 Class; Juan Coetzee (Honda Race Nation Quad Revolution) and André du Plessis (Polaris Outlaw) are all in the top ten overall and are still a threat to the rest. A few years of racing experience will however count in the favour of those who have also showed that they still have the speed and equipment to finish on top.

KAWASAKI RULES Sheridan Morais and Dane Hellyer tie up the CitiBike National Superbike and 600cc Supersports Championships respectively

aturday 25th October was the last round of the CitiBike SA National Supersport championships. With one round still to go (Killarney 15th November) for the CitiBike SA National Superbikes, Sheridan Morais made it a convincing double for Kawasaki by effectively putting himself out of reach by winning race one. Dane Hellyer had already sown up the CitiBike Supersports so he decid-
ed to ride in both classes to giver him grounding for 2009 on the big ZX10. In the Citibike Supersports, Lance Isaacs dominated both heats to prove that, had he come to grips with the 600 Suzuki earlier, it might have been a different story in the championship. Qualifying saw Isaacs from Egan and Hellyer with Suzuki wild card rider, Lourdre Spangenberg putting himself a very respective 19th place in his first National.
But it was Isaacs who dominated taking the overall win from Hellyer and Van Breda. In the CitiBike Superbikes, drama became an understatement. Qualifying was an omen of what was to come with Morais on top from one off rider, Hudson Kennaugh and Greg Gildenhuys. Race one and it was Morais from Seller and Moodley, with Kennaugh dropping to fourth.
Van Brada leads Hellyer The ‘drama’ occurred in Race 2 when Portman high-sided coming out of turn 10 (the CitiBike chicane), and was hit hard, and in fact run over by Nicholas Grobler. Both crashed and caused a Safety Car but, luckily neither were seriously injured. After one lap the Safety Car was withdrawn and racing recommenced. Duane Sculley’s Kawasaki decided enough was enough on lap 5 at the Ess-
es’s and threw its lunch (oil) all over the circuit. Quick reaction by the Kyalami Marshalls saw the race red-flagged and the oil dressed. After a warmup lap, and following consultation with the riders, it was decided not to restart the race so only one heat counted for the day. That meant Morais can’t be caught and goes into Killarney as 2008 Champ.

By the direct linking of a hardware prototype in the virtual simulation environment, real drive cycles can often be arbitrarily completed without having to build components into the test vehicle. FIRST-ROUND KNOCKOUT!
By Ryan Shapiro
W
ments have been made etc etc. But not this time. A humble Rob Barnes (Marketing Manager) began by admitting that these are new horizons for BMW. No fancy claims were made. Just a promise, that BMW wouldn’t release a bike that they did not believe would be competitive! The media, current enduro-racing champions and regular weekend off-road warriors were invited to the launch. Our job was to ride, test and put these models through their paces before giving our completely honest feedback. Martin Ross (Technical Manager) went through all the high performance components and pointed out some of the
controllable torque band with steady progressive acceleration making it a perfect off-road bike for novices and an absolute pleasure for experienced riders. Smooth power delivery , solid handling and very effective braking allows the rider to focus fully on the terrain and not worry about the bike’s radical reactions. What impressed me so much with the G 450 X is its versatility. It is refined enough to be used as an entry level bike and is certainly equipped with enough technology to be used by professionals in competition as well. The norm is to start out with an easy-to-ride, entry level bike and then progress to a more sophisticated machine once skill levels have improved. Two bikes equals twice the money spent. BMW put thought into that and built a bike with some in-

e heard‌‌ we waited‌‌.. and finally, after much anticipation - they DELIVERED!! Unquestionably a BMW - the G 450 X is released and looks both sporty and rugged with a strong “G-modelâ€? family resemblance. Sleeker, lighter and ready to race - this is BMW’s first fully fledged competitive off-road warrior! Like a ravenous shark circling its prey, prodding and inspecting, I had only one thought in mind‌ LEMME AT IT!! Before tearing off, we were asked to sit in on a short briefing. Normally at launches, briefings begin with how good the product is, and how many advance-
innovative designs – after that, we were let loose and it was a mad dash for the bikes! First off the menu for all the riders was a 10km relatively flat trail through farmland. This was a great opportunity to assess acceleration, torque, braking and handling - loads of turns and high speed straights. Low down torque is phenomenal and acceleration is smooth throughout the entire rev-range. The G 450 X features the latest fuel injection with oxygen sensor regulation and dual throttle valves. What does this all mean? A smoother feed of power no matter how aggressive you are on the throttle - unlike the explosive nature of a 250cc two-stroke in power-band or the unrefined power inherent to a 450cc motocross bike. This model has a far more

BMW have been quietly grooming their latest prize-fighter for the highly competitive off-road open class. The gloves are off and it’s no-holds-barred… This match-up is unsanctioned and all’s fair in love and WAR! Game ON!
We moved on for our second course. It was time for something more challenging for the bikes. A fun combination of mud, thick sand and a few technical bits which typify offroad enduro riding. It was here that I got to really feel how well balanced and sure-footed this model actually is! Tracking in the thick sand while cornering is startling! No sliding or rear wheel step-out – just great hook-up and powerful drive out of the turn. Rough terrain felt rather smooth and landings after being airborne were effectively soaked up. Standard suspension settings worked surprisingly well and can only improve with the correct settings for individual weight and preference. Ohlins on the rear, Marzocchi forks in front and Brembo dual-piston brake callipers, BMW sure have fitted the G 450 X with a buffet of world class components that work! A 33mm longer than conventional swingarm is used and this contributes largely to overall stability and handling. The pivotal point of the swingarm is through the output shaft of the gearbox (Sprocket shaft). This maintains an unvarying chain tension and increases the shaft travel, consequently delivering the horsepower to the rear wheel more efficiently! Less chain adjustment is required and wear & tear on sprockets and chain is dramatically reduced. BMW has also done away with the conventional double linkage for the rear shock. Instead, they utilize a fixed pivot allowing the shock to align with the steering neck as opposed to being upright! The theory behind using this method is a reduced pressure on the frame which causes flexing and the ability to tilt the motor and move it further back reducing the weight in front. A tilted motor allows for direct fuel intake (instead of travelling through an elbow shaped intake) and a forward mounted air-box (increased air-intake). The fuel tank is situated underneath the seat; less weight in front means better manoeuvrability, balance and cornering! The G 450 X is graceful in motion, stable in thick sand and a torpedo through water crossings. The more I rode, the more I liked! Despite this being an ENDURO bike, I felt compelled to do some laps on the MOTOCROSS track… It was a natural force of nature that I didn’t have the strength to fight. The bike just took off and the next thing I knew, we were on the track but not on the ground! Talk about well balanced! The take off trajectory was perfect as well as in flight, and the landing on NON-MX set-up suspension was still very impressive (never bottomed out)! I passed Wayne Smith (S.A Champ and MX Legend) while doing my laps around the circuit… OK, I just saw him track-side while his was practising. Eager to get his feedback, I politely asked him to take her for a quick “spin”. Again, take into account that this is not a thoroughbred motocross bike, however, I wouldn’t have asked him to if I didn’t know she was capable! Wayne accepted the offer while Michael Kok (SA MX Pro) watched closely. It was a glorious sight! The G 450 X powered up the climbs, tracked exceptionally well in turns and breezed over the jumps. After 3 laps Wayne pulled into the pit area and gave the bike its full credit! In fact, other than suspension settings, all that he required was slightly longer foot-pegs to compensate for the extra width of the bike. He went on to say
7
how well she handled the turns and how forgiving she was when entry speed was too fast! The power delivery is so smooth you honestly don’t realise how fast you going. In a nutshell, a “road legal” competition Enduro-bike that starts out at 111kg / 41bhp is priced at R76 000 including an incredible 2 year Motorrad Waranty (Unheard of for offroad bikes!) The same bike is able to deliver 54-56bhp with an Acropovic and coded plug and reduce its weight down to around 100kg with the removal of all the road legal components (headlight, indicators etc…). A well organised launch, thanks to Cora Forssman (Events Manager) and a brilliant perfoming machine. Having clinched the German Cross Country Championship and a superb finish in one of the World’s toughest Enduro Races, the Red Bull Romaniacs - the G 450 X HAS ARRIVED and it WILL be noticed! Watch out for this one.
