“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” – Henry David Thoreau

What if we told you that Cities in Color was born over a mile-long text message thread? Believe it! What started as a momentary idea quickly transformed into something much, much bigger. We’re a few free-spirited artsy gals who wanted to bring the color of our city to America’s creative community. Inspired by the adult coloring movement, Jacksonville’s local art community, and the power of sharing beauty through social media like Instagram, we thought to ourselves… What if we could find a way to showcase the best of a city through the eyes of its local talent? We invite everyone, of all ages and from all places, to flex your imagination, stay curious, and experience the beauty and history of JAX. Keep Coloring!

By Allyson Mecca & Dee Nuncio Illustrated by Nicole Morris Printed in the United States of America December 2016

Welcome to

JAX!

Located auspiciously at the junction of St. Johns River and the Atlantic Ocean, Jacksonville is the largest city in the United States and the most populous in Florida. Jacksonville is historically home to some of the first European settlements in America: Fort Caroline, founded in 1564, is both the first French settlement in the US and the first settlement in the Jacksonville area.

MOSH Mural

The Museum of Science and History (MOSH, in local lingo) is Jacksonville’s most-visited museum. The museum is a fascinating microcosm of Florida’s rich natural and innovative history—plus, it’s home to the Florida-famous Tonca, an alligator snapping turtle who’s over 50 years old.

The

Beach Life Due east of downtown you’ll find our treasured coastline: a collection of beaches, each with their own personality. Start with Jacksonville Beach, the modern metropolitan; head north for quiet and quaint Atlantic Beach; and sporty surfer Neptune Beach is nestled in between.
