A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR I’m a huge fan of Samuel Beckett’s work and Krapp’s Last Tape is one of my favourites. It is about a man looking back over his life through listening to monologues he has recorded on his birthdays. At the Citizens we aim to look forward as well as back, so I was keen to commission a new play to sit alongside our revival of Krapp’s Last Tape. Linda McLean is one of our most extraordinary dramatists and her fascination with dramatic form, her poetic voice and ability to create something epic out of the everyday made her the ideal person to approach about writing this companion piece. I’m delighted she agreed. Her fascinating premise has a woman called Jane training an AI replacement of herself and like the most powerful drama goes beyond the immediate situation to explore universal questions – in this case about who we are, and our responsibilities to the past and the future.
