“I was amazed at how intimate the audience was. The warmth, the human thing you get.” CITIZENS THEATRE AUDIENCE MEMBER

A Scottish classic set in the East End of Glasgow, Roddy McMillan’s celebration of working life follows hot on the heels of last year’s Citizens’ Company sell out production No Mean City. Young apprentice Norrie starts his first day in the basement bevelling shop of a glass factory, but finds life isn’t quite what he expected. The Rouger is looking for trouble – and the job they have on is one of the largest ever, the bevelling of a huge sheet of glass that none of them can afford to break. Roddy McMillan was a distinguished Scottish actor, famous for his leading role in the television series Para Handy. This superbly written play about the realities of working life, and the brutal camaraderie of the men, also reveals the pride of skilled craftsmen and their love of patter. First premiered in 1973, with Roddy McMillan himself in a lead role, its impact paved the way for future timeless Scottish masterpieces such as The Slab Boys and The Steamie.

FROM THE STORIES OF GIOVANNI GUARESCHI

BY JIM CARTWRIGHT

Set in a small Italian town in the threadbare years just after the war, the parish priest, Don Camillo, and the communist mayor, Peppone, represent the two poles of Italian life – the Catholic Church and the Communist Party. They stoop to skulduggery and worse to get one over on the other. But their public show of hostility conceals a deeper collaboration to defend a value more important than their respective ideologies – their shared humanity.

Quiet, introverted and innocent - you wouldn’t notice Little Voice in a crowd, but when she starts to sing, the stars come out...

With an original score written and performed live on stage by Colin Steele (trumpet) and Martin Green (accordion), The Little World of Don Camillo sweeps you off your feet and back fifty years to the Po Valley and a world full of hope that peace will last.

Locked away in her room, she’s lost herself in her late father’s record collection of the great female singers of the past. She has an incredible ability for mimicking the voices she idolises but her blousey, man-chasing mother Mari couldn’t care less about this amazing talent...or her daughter. Mari’s the centre of attention in this house so when her latest boyfriend - a would be Simon Cowell - discovers ‘Little Voice’ and decides to make her a star, the battlelines are drawn. He knows she’s got the X factor, now all he has to do is persuade her to use it! Winner of Best Comedy - Evening Standard Awards 1992, Olivier Awards 1993.

The award-winning character comedian Richard Thomson takes you on a journey through the weird world of Ecclefechan’s top policeman, just promoted to Joint Deputy Temporary Head Community Support Liaison Officer. It’s an important job! This brilliant one-man comedy show was a major hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and is now spreading utterly useless crime-fighting tips throughout the country.

Venice. 1606. The beautiful and debauched party capital of Europe. A dazzling and godless world ripe with greed, lust and ambition. TWISTING YARN AND BRADFORD THEATRES

LIFE OF PI A stage adaptation of the 2002 Man Booker Prize winning novel by Yann Martel. Life of Pi charts the adventures of Pi, a 16 year old Indian boy, a Hindu who unusually embraces Christianity and Islam in his search for one God. His family owns a zoo in Pondicherry, southern India, but they decide to emigrate to Canada, taking some of the animals with them. The ship they travel on sinks and Pi finds himself sharing a lifeboat with a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, a female orang utan, a 450pound royal Bengal tiger, his imagination and his faith. Life of Pi is an adventure which challenges children and adults alike. A story of self-exploration and survival, it will make you question your own beliefs and views of the world. Twisting Yarn is the only company in the UK permitted to stage the story – a unique chance to see this beautiful adaptation.

CONSIDER THE LILIES

FERGUS LAMONT

Scottish actress Anna Hepburn encapsulates the pain and suffering of a Highland widow during the time of the Highland Clearances in this powerfully evocative writing from master-craftsman, Iain Crichton Smith.

Communicado, Scotland’s multi-award winning theatre company, present a dynamic adaptation of one of the finest novels ever written in Scotland, Robin Jenkins’ Fergus Lamont.

Consider the Lilies is already established as a classic treatment of one of the most shameful chapters of Scottish history. It portrays the incomprehension and bewilderment of a people whose values and traditions are disregarded in the name of progress, revealing the solidarity every society needs to survive. The performance is a profoundly human piece, sensitively delivered and with a message still relevant to our present time. Anna Hepburn delivers a gentle lamentation for a lost way of life. “Few Scottish actresses speak their own tongue so honestly and sweetly”

From his origins as an illegitimate child in the slums of Glasgow, Fergus Lamont sets out to reclaim his inheritance and to remake his identity as a soldier, poet and would-be aristocrat. Covering the years from the turn of the century to the Second World War, Fergus’ unforgettable voice recounts a tale of vanity, success and betrayal which shines its own sardonic light on Scotland and the cultural and political issues of the day. At odds with his origins, hag-ridden by a creative ego, and unsettled in his aristocratic pretensions, Fergus Lamont reaches middle age before he is offered at least the hope of redemption in a love affair with an island woman. In this adaptation of Robin Jenkins’ most searching exploration of the modern psyche, Communicado create not just an unforgettable character but an image of Scotland and what it is to be Scots. “Communicado has maintained its reputation as an innovative and daring company” THE HERALD

RE:UNION When should you stay in a relationship and when should you walk away? When is compromise just another word for humiliation? Or are some partnerships worth the struggle? When is separation preferable to continued union? To celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the Act of Union between Scotland and England and the upcoming Scottish Elections, 7:84 has commissioned four writers to examine the theme of Separation and Reconciliation with four momentous historical events as a backdrop: Ireland/England 1921; India/ Pakistan 1947; Croatia/Serbia 1991; Scotland/England 2007. A triumphant return of 7:84’s signature political work.

BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON ADAPTED BY PATRICK PRIOR DIRECTED BY JIM DUNK “All human beings are co-mingled out of good and bad… Edward Hyde was pure evil.” An experiment to separate virtue from wickedness in his own nature results in the respectable Doctor Jekyll releasing the demon within. A malevolent force which will eventually possess him body and soul. Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale has fascinated the world for more than a hundred years, questioning whether a Mr Hyde lurks deep within us all, watching and waiting. Presented by Isosceles Theatre, the company who brought On our way to Lisbon, the story of Celtic’s 1967 European Cup Triumph.

BY LOUIS DE BERNIÈRES DIRECTED BY MIKE MARAN PAINTING BY RUTH BARRIE LIGHTING DESIGN BY JOHN BROWN & JIM BOWMAN MUSIC PERFORMED LIVE ON STAGE BY ALISON STEPHENS (MANDOLIN) & ANNE EVANS (PIANO) Adapted from the popular book by Louis de Bernières, Mike Maran along with Alison Stephens on mandolin and Anne Evans on piano, brings this epic to the stage with two chickens, two aubergines, three puppets, a tuba, a motorbike, some old photographs, a walking stick and a goat. Set on the Greek island of Cephalonia from the Second World War to the present day, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin tells the story of Dr. Iannis, his daughter Pelagia, the heroic Italian soldier Carlo Guercio, Captain Antonio Corelli, and the love they all share. It is a passionate story that sweeps you up with joy one minute then makes the fright and rage of war boil in the stomach the next. Full of laughter and tears, the joy of love, and ultimately the triumph of life over death. “Engrossing, touching and beautifully played.” THE SUNDAY TIMES

NORTHERN BROADSIDES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW VIC THEATRE

THE TEMPEST BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTED BY BARRIE RUTTER MUSIC BY CONRAD NELSON The Tempest is brought to you by one of the UK’s finest exponents of Shakespeare, Northern Broadsides. For over a decade they have put on exuberant productions, superbly acted by a cast of charismatic northern actors who bring a refreshing directness and energy to their performances. A ship flounders in a mighty storm stirred up by the magician, Prospero. His mortal enemies are washed ashore onto an enchanted island peopled by spirits and half monsters. Intent on exacting revenge Prospero invokes a fantastical sequence of events, the climax of which is beyond his wildest imaginings. “Pomp without pomposity...the style is cheeky and the pace cracking... a tonic antidote to RSC gravitas”

TAMASHA

THE TROUBLE WITH ASIAN MEN CREATED BY SUDHA BHUCHAR, KRISTINE LANDONSMITH & LOUISE WALLINGER Macho men or metrosexual guys? Mummy’s boys tied to the apron strings, or husbands under the thumb? THE CRUCIBLE

LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES

BY ARTHUR MILLER Arthur Miller’s classic parable of mass hysteria is based on the Salem witchhunt of 1692. Drawing parallels with the McCarthyism which gripped America in the 1950s, it tells of how a small community is stirred into madness by superstition, paranoia and malice. This new interpretation by the students of the HND Acting and Performance course at Reid Kerr College demonstrates how it continues to have interesting resonances today.

BY CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON Sexual intrigues, games, lies, deceit... Christopher Hampton’s deliciously seductive play Les Liaisons Dangereuses is brought to vivid life by students of the HND Acting and Performance course at Reid Kerr College. A wonderfully wicked evening.

GLASGOW COLLEGE OF NAUTICAL STUDIES

TEECHERS BY JOHN GODBER DIRECTED BY STEPHEN CAFFERTY

XLC THEATRE COMPANY IN ASSOCIATION WITH LANGSIDE COLLEGE

ANTIGONE BY SOPHOCLES ADAPTED BY JEAN ANOUILH DIRECTED BY DAVID LEE MICHAEL Following its highly successful run of Sunset Song at the Citizens’ last year XLC is delighted to return with its version of Antigone. “acting of quality and emotional courage”

JOYCE MCMILLAN, THE SCOTSMAN The play by Sophocles was adapted by Jean Anouilh during the German occupation of France. He created a contemporary yet timeless version of this classic. It examines the eternal questions of freewill versus fate and of idealism versus pragmatism but it is also a very human story of a young girl who is prepared to defy her king in order to honour burial rites for her brother. XLC is Langside’s postgraduate company created to give newly qualified actors an early professional platform. Antigone involves XLC actors along with existing students from each of the 3 years of the National Diploma course.

The action in John Godber’s comic play revolves around Geoff Nixon, an idealistic new teacher who joins Whitewall High, a comprehensive secondary school on the west coast of Scotland. Nixon’s illusions and nerves are shattered as he encounters bullying, cynicism and despair - and that’s just from his fellow teachers! Godber’s play is brought vividly to life by a young cast of students from the Glasgow College of Nautical Studies drama department – their fast paced, enthusiastic delivery capturing life in its various guises, in the institution we call school.
