welcome to our world premiere

supporting CITIZENs

The Citizens Theatre and Royal Lyceum Theatre are proud to present the World Premiere of Marilyn, a new play by Scottish playwright Sue Glover. We are thrilled to be working in partnership again, bringing together the talent and creativity of Scotland’s two major producing houses to present this landmark new play.

SPONSORS

Sue Glover has achieved widespread critical acclaim for her writing and it has been a privilege for us to work with her to present this latest piece, which is certain to be a highlight of the theatrical year and a significant addition to our dramatic canon. Marilyn is not simply a biographical snapshot of a moment in history but a thought-provoking examination of the pressures of celebrity and a raw human story of love, insecurity and betrayal.

becoming marilyn

It was Simone who led me to write Marilyn. She describes, in her memoir (Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be) her fateful encounter with the Blonde Bombshell. Simone and Yves Montand were ‘Mr. & Mrs. France’: darlings of the French Intellectual Left, stars of European cinema and music-hall. Whilst Marilyn and Arthur Miller were, literally, the most famous couple in the world and newspaper headlines, not always flatteringly, emphasised the ‘Beauty/Brains’ combination. These two decidedly different blondes had quite a lot in common. Both had precarious, eventful upbringings - Simone, half-Jewish in occupied France; Marilyn catapulted between foster homes and orphanages, married off at 16 to relieve her ‘aunt’ of obligation. Both developed a degree of independence unusual at the time , energetically carving out their careers with talent, luck and guile. It was no accident that Simone chose to play the prostitute in her first ‘real’ film, La Ronde. A smaller role than the others - but usefully, the one which opens and closes the film. Marilyn, often considered dumb, fluffed her lines deliberately if she wanted another take; and eventually formed her own company, wielding a certain authority over production. Yet each of these women, for all her independence, defined herself by the man in her life. In Simone’s case, the minute she claps eyes on Montand, she is smitten – she is his sworn and jealous slave, forever. For Marilyn, things are more complicated: she’s never sure for long which is the right man.... Sue Glover, Feb 2011 Sue Glover’s theatre work includes Bondagers, which won a Thames award, The Straw Chair, and Shetland Saga (Traverse Theatre), The Seal Wife (Little Lyceum), The Bubble Boy (Tron), Artist Unknown (TAG), Blow-Outs, Wrecks & Almanacs (Pittenweem Festival) and Bear on a Chain (Oran Mor). Her plays have been performed in the UK and abroad. She also writes for radio and television. Marilyn is a co-production between the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow and the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh. Marilyn was commissioned by the Citizens Theatre and premiered at the Glasgow Theatre on Tuesday 22 February. This will be followed by a transfer to the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh from 15 March - 2 April.
