Two maids and their mistress: three women locked in a repetitive and abusive cycle of domination and submission. While the mistress is out of the apartment, Claire and Solange raid her wardrobe and indulge in secret, ritualistic role-play; acting out the scenes of daily domestic arrogance with which she has earned their hatred. Loosely based on the true story of the Papin sisters who shocked French society in the 1930s when they brutally murdered their mistress and her daughter, Jean Genet’s enduring masterpiece simultaneously explores the illusion of theatre and the psychology of retribution. Award-winning designer and director Stewart Laing brings his unique aesthetic style to this new interpretation of Genet’s notorious play. HAT-TRICK FOR HIT PRODUCTION DIVIDED CITY BROUGHT BACK TO THE STAGE Thanks to funding from the Scottish Government and a new partnership with South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Ltd, the hugely popular stage production of Theresa Breslin’s award-winning book, Divided City, is back. This is the third time the successful anti-sectarianism project has been run in Scotland by Citizens Learning. Working intensively with over 40 pupils from 6 different secondary schools in South Lanarkshire, its important message of tolerance and friendship continues to inspire participants and audiences. CITIZENS THEATRE AT HMP BARLINNIE With financial support from Creative Scotland, the Citizens Learning team will deliver a series of drama workshops and creative projects in HMP Barlinnie. We will be working in close partnership with Motherwell College and Scottish Prison Service staff to plan the three-year programme which aims to use drama to engage prisoners in education.

CITIZENS SCOOPS ARTS AND BUSINESS AWARD YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE ARTS AWARD For the second year in a row, the Citizens Theatre and sponsor Scott+Co were the recipients of a prestigious Arts & Business Award. The Young People and the Arts Award was presented for the partnership on anti-sectarianism work in Glasgow. Scott+Co supported a new musical stage adaptation of the seminal book, Divided City, performed by local secondary school children at the Citizens as well as touring performances of Scarfed for Life performed directly in schools, which focused on how prejudice affects young people today.

Latecomers may be admitted to the Main Theatre if there is a suitable break in the performance. BOOKING FEES There is a £2 transaction fee applied to online sales. We charge £1 postage. There are no bookings fees charged for in person or telephone sales. OPENING HOURS The Box Office is open 10am-6pm, Mon to Sat and to 8pm on performance evenings.
