BY AIR - Puducherry’s Domestic airport is connected to Bengaluru via daily flights - except for Wednesdays. The Air India flight departs Bengaluru at 3:35pm and reaches Pondicherry at 4:35. The return flight departs at 4:55 and reaches at 5:55. This is a 1 hour nonstop flight. Travellers can also drive down from the Domestic & International airports in Chennai, Trichy or Bengaluru. Both Chennai (151 kms) and Trichy (203 kms) are just few hours by road, while Bangalore (307 kms) is a little longer. BY RAIL - Daily connectivity to Villupuram, Chennai and Tirupathy are available. While tri-weekly trains connect Pondicherry to Bangalore and Mumbai; other cities like Kolkatta, Bhubaneshwar, New Delhi, Mangalore and Kanyakumari are connected by weekly train. BY ROAD - The best connectivity is definitely by road. Multiple buses ply daily from and to Chennai and Bangalore. From hop on hop off local buses, to air-conditioned, multi-axled luxury buses. GANDHI MANDAPAM is Asia’s 3rd biggest Gandhi Statue. Mahatma Gandhi is surrounded by eight granite pillars, which were brought from Gingee, a fort 70kms from Puducherry. Located across the street from Gandhi statue is the statue of Jawaharlal Nehru. It is also flanked by four pillars from Gingee. Location: Goubert Avenue (Beach Road).
SERENITY BEACH is a few kms from the city, on the ECR, and characterizes the essences of its name. It has a very calm and serene atmosphere. The sands and the waters are the cleanest ones around Pondicherry.
CHUNNAMBAR houses the famous PTDC boat house and is located on 19TH CENTURY LIGHT HOUSE is still one of Pondicherry’s prime tourist the Cuddalore main road. One can go through the legendary French colonial details in watching a short introductory video on the Matrimandir. Passes are the history section of the museum. Facing ‘Cercle de Pondicherry’ is his statue, while the house he lived in - situated at 95, Perumal Koil Street - has been converted into a memorial. PROMENADE BEACH and the monuments along its length, speak of the rich heritage of Pondicherry. Some of the important monuments of the city are located next to its shores. They include the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Joan of Arc, Dupleix and the French War Memorial etc. A lot of information pertaining to Pondicherry can be acquired through the tourism information centre on the beach road. BHARATHI PARK also called the Government Park is surrounded by some of the most prestigious government buildings like the Lt. Governor’s Palace, the Legislative Assembly, Government Hospital, Ashram dining room, the Cercle de Pondicherry private club etc. The park surrounds the Aayi Mandapam.

AROUND PONDY SOUTH A 1-day excursion to the South of Pondy is a must. Just 30 mins drive from Pondicherry will bring you to Arikamedu. The place is historically significiant, as recent excavations at some sites have unearthed Roman coins and wine jars establishing it as the earliest Indo-Roman trading centre (around 2nd century AD). A few kms further is Chunnambar, the PTDC boat house. There is a resort and restaurant to facilitate tourists. Boating here is a wonderful experience as a short cruise away is the sand bar that will make you feel as if you are on a remote island. WEST 15kms away from Pondicherry is Ousteri Lake, the largest fresh water body in the region. Ousteri has been recognized as one of the important wetlands of Asia by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The lake serves as a bird sanctuary to over 20,000 birds belonging to 40 species that call it home during winter.

Shaded with traditional tiles, flanked by solid Chettinad wooden pillars and dotted with old–fashioned lanterns and white napkins, ‘Grillades’ best typifies the happy mélange of Indian and Continental sensibilities in both ambience and menu. With a live counter for grills, barbecue and tandoor, this is the latest joint in the city for those who like their food smoky hot! The barbecue menu here is quite extensive featuring Indian favourites like kebabs and continental specials starring grilled beef. The signature special here is the ‘Le Chateau Special’ which has plump wedges of grilled beef slathered with cheese and wrapped in celery- that’s calories cunningly tucked away for you! If you want to give everything fried a wide berth, then make a hearty meal out of one of the grill platters- either loaded with vegetables, mushroom and paneer, the seafood platter or the mixed meat one. Or does your heart beat for the eternal bombshell, Marilyn Monroe? If classic Hollywood films and music of a bygone era has always had you in a thrall, La Plancha is where you must dine. Marilyn seductively bats her eyelashes at you from the walls, urging you try the American burgers. Elvis croons near the bar and the chairs are each painted with the name of Hollywood’s heartthrobs. La Marina’s rooftop with its large lanterns and reasonably priced cocktails mixed by a French bartender, is a place where food and conversation are quick to come by. The burgers here are not your quick-fix chain restaurant assembled ones- they are well grilled, juicy patties served with French fries and coleslaw on a wooden plank. If you miss beef and pork between your bread and cheese, then try their Jumbo Sloppy Burger, stuffed with minced beef and beef patty or their Oink Oink burger, loaded with bell peppers and pork. While you wait, crunch on another classic American favourite- beer battered onion rings.
Another rooftop, almost perched above the Bay of Bengal, the popular ‘Lighthouse’ restaurant now refashioned as the ‘Bay of Buddha’ occupies what is easily one of the prime spots in Pondy. Brushing shoulders with the 19th century lighthouse next door, with waves crashing on boulders not far away, there are many reasons to choose a sea-facing table under the white canopies here. You have a bird’s view of the pageant of life in Pondy at the city’s favourite haunt- the Promenade seafront and the menu is starkly different from what the city generally offers. Calling itself the first exclusive pan-Asian restaurant in Puducherry, the ‘Bay of Buddha’ is the answer to those who love their kimchi, lemongrass and red snapper in a salubrious setting with candles glimmering on tables and the stars above. For starters, there is an interesting array from dimsums and satay to spring rolls stuffed with dates and skewered mushrooms. CREOLE Pondy meets Provence: Neemrana’s Hotel de l’Orient and La Maison Tamoule Pondicherry’s signature cuisine- that happy marriage of Indian spices and Provencal herbs, the blend of curries and stews is sadly missing on the restaurant circuit. These recipes are kept alive in the homes of Pondicherrians and within the pages of some recipe books and blogs. While Creole dishes are scattered across menus in the form of a couple of curries, it is the Neemrana restaurants that serve proper choices to foodies who come looking for Creole. Hotel de l’Orient (Romain Rolland Street) is the better known choice, though La Maison Tamoule (Vysial Street) is an undervalued gem. The former has two dining options- a quiet courtyard with wrought iron chairs spread under boughs of trees decked with fairy lights and an air-conditioned space filled with wooden chests and walls papered with ancient maps. The latter has handcrafted athankudi tiles, stocky pillars and carved rosewood furniture. But the food in these restaurants is distinctive- here is where thyme shakes hands with cumin and coconut and tamarind make no fuss about dancing with cream and cilantro. Sautéing and tempering techniques blend to create this hybrid cuisine which is more Tamil than French. For the real Creole experience, pair jeera rice with chicken cooked in creamy cashewnut curry or couple the pachai eral curry (prawns encrusted in a thick coriander gravy) with the gently fragrant butter rice.
