2017 SUMMER

Guidebook

blank page

Welcome!

The Broomfield 100 gives you the opportunity to explore the beauty and diversity of nature in your own backyard. Share the wonders of the great outdoors with your children, have fun, win prizes, and be healthy at the same time!

BROOMFIELD.ORG/BROOMFIELD100 NEW THIS YEAR!

This year we’ve expanded the challenge to include landmarks and events. Earn points by completing each item! As you complete each item, record your visit in your Summer Guidebook. Earn 100 points to complete the challenge. The purpose of the event is to promote outdoor exercise, healthy living, and to learn about Broomfield and its trail system. To complete an item, it is not necessary to cover the entire mileage of a trail, but rather to visit the site, learn the trail connections, and enjoy the area.

BASIC TRAIL ETIQUETTE • • • • • • • •

Stay on the right side of the trail moving with the flow of traffic, except to pass. Pass on the left. Do not block the path by standing in the middle; leave at least half of the trail open for passing. When bicycling, slow down and notify other trail users before passing. Bicyclists must yield to hikers. Stay on existing trails. Avoid creating new trails and causing damage to the landscape. Do not use headphones that prevent you from hearing other trail users. Keep dogs on-leash and do not block trail with extended leash. Full etiquette is found on the Broomfield Trail Map.

TRAIL GUIDELINES Please observe all posted regulations, bring water, first aid equipment, and insect repellent. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. All trails allow dogs (on-leash) and are open to bikes, walkers, etc. All trails are ADA accessible, although some segments fall outside of ADA guidelines for slope and trail width. Before any mobility devices are used on the trails, trail users should refer to our ADA Trail information. • For detailed information about accessibility, visit Broomfield.org/TrailUsage • To view an ADA trail map, visit Broomfield.org/ADAAccessibilityTrailMap • To view mobility trail policies, visit Broomfield.org/OPDMDPolicy

C O Y O T E AWA R E N E S S Be S.M.A.R.T. if you encounter a coyote: Stop! Do not run! If you run, the coyote may chase. Make yourself look big! Put your hands over your head and look as big as you can so the coyote knows that you are too tough to mess with. Announce forcefully, “Leave Me Alone!” Repeat if necessary. This lets the coyote know you are a person, and it lets people around you know that you may be in trouble. Retreat! Back away slowly, but don’t turn your back on the coyote. Teach your friends and neighbors about coyotes and report coyote encounters to an adult if you’re a child. Pets are Part of the Family Wild animals throughout Broomfield, even in residential neighborhoods, think unattended pets are “fair game.” These coyotes, foxes, owls, hawks and eagles don’t discern between a cute, cuddly pet and prey. To avoid conflicts between wildlife and pets, here are some pointers: • Keep cats indoors; • Always supervise your pet outside. Do not leave your pet unattended in your yard; • Keep dogs on leash; • Avoid known or potential den sites and areas of thick vegetation; • Do not allow dogs to “play” with coyotes or foxes; • Do not leave pet food and water bowls outside. For additional information, call 303.464.5103.

What is iNaturalist? iNaturalist.org is a community for naturalists. People can report their observations of all types of organisms, from animals to fungi on this website! Broomfield Open Space and Trails has created a project on iNaturalist for everyone to submit observations, findings and questions from across the county. It doesn’t have to be on open space, it could even be something you saw in your backyard! You can use iNaturalist to get help with species identification and to record where you observed something. The site works on a “crowd-sourced identification system” where you can upload an image or a sound clip of your observation and other users of the website help you identify it. An image or sound clip is encouraged but not required to submit observations. The Broomfield Project Join Broomfield’s Project at inaturalist. org/projects/broomfield-naturalists. The project is maintained by Broomfield Open Space & Trails. If you have any questions, please contact Holly D’Oench at 303.464.5103 or hdoench@broomfield. org. How do I participate?

1. Sign up or sign in to inaturalist.org 2. Go to inaturalist.org/projects/ broomfield-naturalists and join the project. 3. Start submitting your findings. Receive a point for each observation you post!
