FILM & MAKE

EARTH AND THE MOUNTAINS” “Only the Earth and the Mountains” by filmmaker Elleni Sclavenitis interrogates the narrative of settler colonialism in the American West by white pioneers and its implications to society today by examining the repercussions of the Sand Creek Massacre, in which more than 200 Cheyenne and Arapaho people were murdered by U.S. Cavalry troops on Nov. 29, 1864. In speaking to the survivors’ descendants, it becomes clear that this event is a living, perpetual loss—one that should not be forgotten. After the thirty minute film, stay for a panel discussion with members of the Arapaho and Cheyenne nations. Age: ALL (under 12 needs adult) 762560

CAREER ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL

WHY LANGUAGE MATTERS Behavioral health describes the connection between behaviors and the health of the body and mind. It is an umbrella term that covers both mental health and substance use. The words we use around behavioral health hold a lot of power - the power to uplift and to educate, but also the power to stigmatize if used incorrectly. Here are some ways to change your language: Instead of Saying This:

Say This:

Why?

Mental patient, psycho, schizo, deranged, suffering from __

A person is living with, has a diagnosis of, or is being treated for mental illness

Certain language sensationalizes mental illness, reinforces stigma and suggests poor quality of life

Using terminology incorrectly or out of context (“that meeting was insane”)

Reword any sentence that uses terminology incorrectly or out of context (“that meeting was frustrating”)

Words used out of context adds to misunderstanding and trivialises mental illness

Addict, abuser, user, junkie, alcoholic, drunk, former addict

Person with substance use/alcohol use disorder, person who uses substances, person in recovery

Is labeling a person by their behavior or illness (not person-first language)
