WINNERS & LOSERS
Who was up and who was down last week
The Mayor of Fun wants everyone to go out to shows, but canceled his own inauguration due to a January COVID-19 spike. And when his 100th day in office rolled around? He had COVID-19. But on his 116th day, Eric Adams finally had his moment in the sun, making winners of the haters in a high-profile budget address. Yes, it seems that Adams WILL listen to people who did not wear a bulletproof vest for 22 years.

NICK LANGWORTHY
Things are looking up for New York Republicans. They were the biggest beneficiaries of the Court of Appeals’ decision to strike down election maps drawn by Democrats. While the exact implications for individual candidates will be unknown until new maps come out, state Republican Party Chair Nick Langworthy will certainly see friendlier maps on the horizon for the GOP and is relishing in the victory lap.

KATHY HOCHUL
The governor is facing roadblocks from leadership in her own party, who are reportedly vexed by secretive budget negotiations and the indictment of former Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin. The City reported her “honeymoon is over” with “livid Albany lawmakers,” citing a source who said she has “disappointed everyone.” Then Democratic leaders blocked Hochul’s efforts to boot Benjamin off the ballot.
THE BEST OF THE REST ANNA KELLES
Cryptocurrency fans are not a monolith, but “crypto bros” hounded Assembly Member Anna Kelles over her efforts to regulate proof-of-work bitcoin mining. The crypto industry failed to stop Kelles’ moratorium bill from passing the Assembly. Still, the legislation has a ways to go – it must now pass the state Senate – before Kelles can celebrate.
SANDY NURSE
After advocacy from the chair of the New York City Council Sanitation Committee, things are looking up for funding for municipal composting. Eric Adams restored funding for the program to process organic waste and a budget report found it will actually save money.
THE REST OF THE WORST DONALD TRUMP
The former president’s battle with state Attorney General Letitia James is getting pricier every day. And it’s all thanks to a judge that held Trump in contempt of court for failing to hand over documents. Now, Trump faces a $10,000 fine every day until he complies with the subpoena.
ALESSANDRA BIAGGI
There’s a lot we don’t know about the effects of the Court of Appeals decision. But state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi probably won’t have a congressional district to run in. The open seat had stretched just far enough north to include Biaggi’s home. Will that remain the case?
