Dates for your Diary ... Dear Parents & Carers Welcome to our Spring Issue of the CAN magazine. You will see that it's been another very busy and enjoyable term, with a large number of educational trips, activities and enrichment experiences taking place. It's fantastic that all our Year 7 places have been allocated for September 2012 and this is a real reflection of the progress we have made as an Academy.

– Year 8 PACT Day Wednesday 18th July LAST DAY of Term Friday 20th July

We’re Moving! Kier will be handing over the new Academy building to us on 14 May. Exactly on schedule. The IT contractors will then be setting up the new Apple and PC computers over the next three weeks and the Academy will be ready for students and staff immediately after half term in June. Why are we moving at half term? There are two main reasons. The first is to let all of us get used to the new building and test out all the systems and processes. Any problems can then be corrected over the summer holidays so that we are all ready for the new school year.

We are all very excited about the move into our new building, which is taking place very soon. Please carefully read the important note 'We're Moving' opposite, for key dates and information.

Secondly, we can hand over the old school to the demolition contractor on the first day of the Summer holidays so that a lot of the demolition work on the old east wing nearest the new building will be completed before the next term starts.

I hope you enjoy our newsletter, which gives just a flavour of the many exciting things which are happening at the Academy.

Thursday 31 May and Friday 1 June for packing up and staff training Monday 11 June for unpacking and setting up

Mr D Brunton Principal

To make sure everything is ready to move, the Academy will be closed on:

We apologise for any inconvenience this might cause but this is the minimum time the staff need to make sure the new building is set up, safe and ready for the students.

Celebrating World Book Day with John Ruddy Mr Ruddy, who many have tipped for a call-up to the England national squad because of his great form this season, stopped off at the Academy to talk to 30 lucky pupils about his favourite books and the importance of reading. The 25-year-old goalkeeper, who signed for City in the summer of 2010, took questions from our students before signing autographs and posing for pictures and heading to the school’s sports hall to give some football coaching tips. He was keen to encourage the pupils to read though, just as he encourages his own two young children. More inside ...

These lucky pupils can look forward to Norwich City-themed lessons after they helped launch a Spanish language project at Carrow Road on Saturday. Stepping onto the hallowed turf at half-time in the Chelsea match, school children from the City Academy paraded the Spanish flag onto the pitch. As reported in the Evening News on Wednesday, the language project is being backed by the Canaries’ Spanish defender Daniel Ayala. Ayala, signed in the summer from Liverpool, has been named ambassador for the project,

called Spanish Double Club. He said: “I think it’s great that local kids will be learning Spanish through the Double Club project. I look forward to saying ‘Hola’ to them soon and helping them to get started.” The scheme will initially be offered to 20 students from City Academy in Earlham and it is hoped the classes will encourage

the 12 and 13-year-old pupils to develop their understanding of the language and take it as a GCSE. Youngsters will take part in two hours of lessons each week. One hour will be based in the classroom and one will be out on the pitch, combining Spanish with football skills.

CAN’s Got Talent

The annual CAN's Got Talent show is now a Christmas tradition at City Academy Norwich and this year saw record numbers of students auditioning to take part and a higher level of talent than ever before. The performance was enjoyed by over 500 students, families and friends who enjoyed the mix of dancing, singing and entertainment. The winning act, dancer Shahrukh Zaffar (top right), is a regular performer and created his own music mix as well as choreographing his routine. He said "I really enjoyed the experience, it’s my third CAN’s Got Talent and second time of winning. I worked really hard just to entertain the crowd."

LV

Singer Lucy Myhill was given second place for a confident vocal performance of Kelly Clarkson's "Mr Know it all". The guest judges, Geoff Parnell, Director of Norfolk Dance and C.O.L.L., local superstar rapper had a hard job choosing their winner from the 15 talented acts.

ower School ocal Group

The lower school Vocal Group were privileged to be asked to represent the Academy at the recent Ormiston Birthday Celebration at The Forum. It was the group’s first public performance and although they were nervous, it certainly didn’t show as they sang a mixture of popular and festive favourites. It was a really special occassion for Ormiston, and the Vocal Group were proud to be part of saying thank you for all the work the charity do at the Academy.

Christmas

family fun day

Back

before Christmas, the Academy hosted the annual Christmas Family Fun Day for our local community. We had over 500 people visit us and raised almost £1,000 to fund future events.

Activities on offer included face painting, cooking, clay pots and prints, drumming lessons, cinema and lots of games and competitions.

There was an opportunity to make bird feeders with the RSPB and then take a wildlife walk with Norfolk Family Learning before stopping off for home made cakes in the dining room. Those who were brave enough could meet the ‘Mini Monsters‛, which included snakes, spiders and snails.

The highlight for many younger visitors was meeting Father Christmas in his grotto, while the older children preferred the challenge of the climbing wall brought along by Norfolk Scouts. The day finished with an announcement of the winners of the Christmas Card Competition, which had been run in Norwich Community West schools throughout the term. Almost 800 cards were displayed throughout the Fun Day and visitors voted West Earlham Junior School to receive the Best School Trophy. Congratulations also to Joleene Edwards (over 14), Rand Hassan (11-14), Sophie Saunders (7-11) and Finley Golec (under 7), who were individual winners.

City Academy Norwich students have won the prestigious 'School of the Year' Eco Award 2011/2012. As the new building for City Academy was erected, students became interested in the sustainability of green areas and also how ecologically friendly we would be as a school. The students formed an Eco-Council and started two projects. The first involved asking local businesses and residents to sponsor plants that would then be planted around the new academy grounds. The second was

Big Coffee Morning Friday 11 May

to plant a tree nursery, where students would plant and look after saplings. These could then be donated to local schools and charities to encourage tree planting and build awareness so that green areas could be sustained in their community. The award recognises the hard work and effort put into these projects by the students at City Academy Norwich, who already have more ideas for ways to make their community and the school more ecologically friendly.

Our Parents’ Coffee group is joining forces with Duke of Edinburgh students to raise money for this very worthwhile local charity. Tea, coffee, cakes and crafts will be on sale. The event starts at 10.30 am in the Acorn Centre and finishes at 12.00 noon. The event is open to family and friends of students and we hope that a Big Cheque will be sent to the Big C.

alentines Day

Families from the local area were invited to do something a little different this Valentines Day as they joined Norfolk Family Learning at City Academy Norwich for a Family Wildlife Walk.

We began indoors to hear about some of the birds and creatures we might see. Peter Walton, who regularly attends our Family Fun Days, then led us on a walk around the schools field and Earlham Park to see what we could find. Using binoculars and telescopes we kept our eyes peeled and spotted lots of wildlife, including robins, gulls, ducks and squirrels.

Did you know? Norwich and District Carers Forum run a monthly lunch time session in the Acorn Centre for students who care for family members. They provide a listening ear and can also support them in their caring role.

We finished the morning with some delicious cakes baked for us by the children at Holiday Club.

Sessions are held on the first Wednesday in the month.

We hope to hold another Family Walk in the Summer Term, so look out for more information soon.

If you know of anyone who may benefit from this support, please contact the Acorn Centre on 274951

Welcome to the Spring LRC Newsletter! We have had a really eventful Spring term in the LRC – our new stock is proving really popular and we have a record number of resources being issued. Our team of student LRC helpers have been kept very busy helping behind the desk! We have held talks on range of topics including a careers talk from the Police and Fashion and Retail. Author Andy Briggs has been in to speak to our yr 7’s about his new book Tarzan and we have taken our book club students to Norwich School to see Theresa Breslin. Later this term, poet Tom Warner will be running some workshops for our year 8 students. Our clubs have been very popular and the Manga club been doing some fantastic designs and drawings which are on display in the LRC, as well as visiting the Japan exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre. The new Dungeons and Dragons club has proved so engaging that students requested a whole day workshop during half term. We are open every day from 8am to 4.30pm and are always on hand to help with research, homework or just choosing something to read. We would love to hear any suggestions or requests you may have for the LRC and you can email us at lrc@cityacademynorwich.org

Talks & Events in the LRC Around 250 students, including a group from Larkman Primary school had a special visit from author and screenwriter Andy Briggs to celebrate world book day. Andy has written the series Hero.com and Villain.net and a new book Tarzan which can all be found in the LRC. Students had the opportunity to hear him talk about how he became a writer and the many book and film projects he has been involved in. They also learnt about how to survive in the rainforest and took part in an interactive quiz to test their survival skills! Tamara Marshall Nichols said: “He was very enthusiastic about writing and he got us really involved in the whole talk with lots of questions and a really fun quiz at the end!” Rachel Pearson said: ”I learnt a lot about life in the rainforest and endangered animals and I really want to read Tarzan now as it sounds great!”

Police careers talk

Earlier in the term students interested in a career in policing were able to attend a talk given by PC Clabon who spoke at length about her years experience in the services, her opinions of it and what had changed over her career. This was followed up by a question and answer session in which she dealt with a wide range of issues with queries being put forward by both curious students and inquisitive staff. Accompanying PC Clabon on her visit we were lucky enough to have a Police Community Support Officer who was very informative in providing details about her role, how it differs from that of PC Clabon’s and what she enjoyed most about it.

Thank you to all the staff and students who helped us celebrate World Book Day on March 1st! The LRC ran several competitions, including a Shakespeare quiz and finding out what staff’s favourite books are. Well done to winners Amne Khalil and Rachel Pearson for collecting all 34 staff favourites, and to Emilia Hanszke for winning the Shakespeare quiz. The LRC Team were delighted to welcome Norwich City Football Club's superstar goalkeeper John Ruddy to City Academy. A group of students were invited to meet and ask questions to City's first choice shot stopper, ranging from 'Who is the best player you have played against?' to 'What does it feel like to be playing against some of the best teams in the world every week?'. John was also promoting National Book Week to the students, as he spoke of his favourite reads including 'The Da Vinci Code' and 'Angels and Demons'. These novels are available within your LRC. John said that he also enjoys reading the Gruffalo series to his younger children.

The visit was complete with an invite to see some of City Academy's own up-and-coming football stars during their training session. John seemed very impressed!

On Tuesday the 6th of March 2012 some students went to the Norwich School to see an amazing author. Her name is Theresa Breslin. After we had taken our seats, the introduction started and Theresa began talking. She was talking about many of her books and how she thought up the ideas. She also showed us pictures about how her ideas started and what she used. We all took notes and I found out things that I will take on board in the future. She also said about how to start a story and how to keep it flowing. We got to Although we missed vote on what we thought the new book cover should some of our lessons it be and I thought that it was great how we got a say. What is Dungeons and Dragons?

* LRC’S CINE-CLUB * Welcome to the Cine-Club, perfect for all film and cinema enthusiasts. We have been running this project for several weeks, and have presented a variety of films to a mixed audience from different year groups at the academy. We meet every Thursday afternoon in the LRC from 3:10 – 4:30pm, and is open to everyone.

Dungeons and Dragons is a “RPG” which stands for Role-Playing game, which means you don’t act as the character, you are the character. As you fight through enemies and monsters you will become stronger and your character will grow. When you start up you will create your characters: Name, Race, Class and their looks. You create and control every aspect of your character. When you first

We show a variety of films, from a range of genres and it is you who decides what we watch (age appropriate of course!). After a film has been viewed, we ask our audience if they could complete a simple feedback questionnaire about that particular film and to seek whether they would recommend this to others. Naturally your views are important to us at Cine-Club, as it is this feedback that will be used to advice future audiences, as well as the possibility of display work in or maybe out of CAN.

are coming from in the town, they venture down in to the sewers and now we find out what is down there…

Film club is fun because as a group we can choose the films we would like to watch. Sometimes we share biscuits and sweets. We have a wide variety of films to choose from, covering a range of different genres. Personally I like to watch action, adventure and comedy films and hope we can enjoy watching some of these in the future. Mheann Orias (year 10)

‘Cirque Du Freak’ A Living Nightmare by Darren Shan Book review by Joshua Monaghan (year 10)

I like this book of its dark and interesting storyline. It keeps the reader interested throughout the novel. There is also a film with the book, but they are both different. Personally I think the book is much better, because there is a lot more suspense and detail, which the film did not include. I would definitely recommend this book, especially to those above the age of 12 years. The story itself involves different characters, seeing immortal human’s battle against vampires. It really is a great read. I have decided to redesign the original book cover, as its illustrations don’t quite manage to explain the story. Also there is a lack of colour, which I see as an important aspect when picking an attractive book from a shelf.

Book Reviews:

Hi I’m Tamara and I’m a library helper in the Learning Resource Centre. During my time working here I have made friends, learnt names and get to do my bit to help. I have also gained the confidence to talk to more people.

Abomination Robert Swindells Book review by Jordan Morter I liked this book by Robert Swindells because it features a lot of adventure and action within its storyline. The story features a girl who has just started high school and is a victim of bullying. The bullies chased the girl home every night. The bullied soon realize where she actually lives and who her mother is. The bullies stop when they get close to the house, as fear soon takes over. It’s an interesting storyline and it’s very relevant to modern times, due to the unfortunate case that people are bullied on a daily basis. I would recommend this book, especially to people who like drama and role play. I have decided to redesign the books cover, as the original illustrations fail to show the poverty and lifestyle of the characters. I have only managed to read half of the book so far, but looking forward to reading the next instalment when I have more time.

MAZING MATHS RESULTS for High Flying Students

TH

S

A group of year 6 students who were mentored by year 8 academy students have made spectacular progress in maths. Two months on and the year 6 students are still showing signs of improvement in their learning and understanding. They all put their improvement and higher levels down to their brilliant City Academy Mentors. The year 8 mentors have now taken on a new set of year 6 students from Bluebell Primary School and they are looking forward to the challenge.

The year 6 students from Larkman Junior visited City Academy in December 2011 for a day of mentoring from high flying students in year 8 at the Academy, where they enjoyed a feast of one to one tutoring and activities designed to prepare them for their SAT exams in May. Careful analysis of the students’ work during the run up to the day allowed Academy mentors to design focused tasks and activities to meet the individual needs of their mentees. Four weeks and a Christmas holiday on, and the year 6 students are showing signs of having made significant progress. Analysis of recent results since the mentoring shows an average gain in attainment per student of 11%. Individual gains of 88% and 56% have brought a sense of outstanding achievement and self confidence to academy and Larkman Primary students alike.

“The day went brilliantly. I was so pleased with my student. He made an outstanding 88% improvement on the tests, which was the most in the class. He obviously took in the knowledge I taught him and I wish him the best of luck in his SATs.” Charlie Walker

“I loved working with my year six, seeing their grade improve was inspirational and such a privilege!” Genevieve Richardson

“I thought it was amazing because we got to have the experience of being a teacher for a whole day and I found it fun helping out a year six get better grades for SATs .” Annie Nappin

This is what some of the year 8’s had to say about working as mentors: “Aim for the moon; that way if you miss you’ll still be among the stars.” Jade Jones “If We Believe In Them, They Will Believe In Themselves.” Fae Shuttleworth “I thought the day went really well. Lots of learning took place.” Reece Waterfield

WHAT IS SEND?

Meet the SEND Team

SEND stands for Special Educational Needs and Disability. The purpose of SEND provision within schools is to enable students with learning barriers, to attain the level of achievement they would have achieved, had those barriers not existed. If your child experiences more difficulties than most children their age with schoolwork, communication or behaviour, they may have Special Educational Needs or a Disability. Plenty of help and advice is at hand from special educational needs specialists in the SEND department. We can also contact outside agencies, within the educational system, health care and voluntary organisations.

They said “we had fun making it and it gave our form a chance to work together on a project.”

Form C3 collected toys, games and teddies for the charity Leeway, a hostel for women and children who have escaped some kind of domestic violence:

Dance Showcase Dance students worked hard for the Norwich School Sports Partnership Dance Showcase. This event took place on Thursday 9 February at Open. Students performed dances that they had choreographed in their free time, or for their Btec level 2 dance assessment. The production was a huge success, with around 800 people in the audience over two shows. All students dedicated a lot of time to rehearse and this payed off on the day.

Well done to all that participated and bring on the Dance show in May!

CAN in the Community Working with our Partner Schools The Community team at CAN have been very busy working with local schools this term. We celebrated Chinese New Year at Nelson Infant School and Valley Primary School by making dragons, fans, lanterns and calligraphy scrolls.

At Henderson Green Primary School parents and little brothers and sisters had a go at making some homemade sweets. They enjoyed it so much, that parents at Bluebell Primary School also wanted to have a go!

Our main project this term has been a big art project, which involved all the schools in the Norwich Community West cluster. Each school was given a piece of wood to decorate with items that represent their school. Each piece will be painted in the logo colours, so the challenge was to find or make 3D objects that could still be seen after painting. All the pieces will then be put together to form a giant version of the flower shaped cluster logo. This will be displayed at our Spring Family Fun Day and then have a permanent home in the Community area of the new City Academy Norwich building – be sure to come and have a look next time you visit us.

Year 8 Product Designers Impress Notcutts Judge

A group of students in Year 8 were given the role of ‘Project Managers’ in their most recent Design Technology lesson. The students had to imagine they were working for a client, Notcutts Garden Centre and had to impress a guest judge, Gordon Reynolds, who works for the company and kindly came to the

Academy to watch the Year 8’s present their work. The project managers were given a team of DT students to work with. Their role was to supervise the design and manufacture of the team’s products and then present the final products alongside a business proposal, which included profit information and promotional ideas. They used various

methods of presentation from PowerPoints and iPad movies to business cards and promotional songs. The winning team, called ‘Eaten by Easter Eggs’, who was judged to have put on the most informative presentation and business proposals, was led by Katy Harabajiu and Daria Peart, who are pictured here receiving their prizes from Gordon Reynolds.

Year 8 Tourism Enterprise Project ...

The brief they were given was that there’s lots of fantastic stuff going on in East Anglia, but many people don’t know about it. Students had to come up with an idea of ‘advertising what’s good about East Anglia’, on something that moved, in order to showcase around the country. There were lots of weird and wonderful ideas including hamsters wheeling a showcase around, solar panel cars (environmentally friendly) and scooters with trailers on the back! The team that came up with the best idea, which compromised of Matthew Preston, Corey Jones, Casey Staddon and Sam Dagless, came up with the idea of a car-boat - a car which turns into a boat with billboards advertising lots of exciting things to do in Norfolk, like Go Ape and Dinosaur Adventure. The group drew their idea first and then made a 3d cardboard model. All the students taking part in this project had a really good day and learned about persuasive writing skills, the geography of Norfolk, design and team working.

Fifteen of our Year 9 Gifted & Talented students worked with a company called "Made by Young People", designing t shirts, which were then made, approved and marketed.

Students had to pitch to two Gazelle Entrepreneurs (Dick Palmer, Principal at City College Norwich and Ben Ramsden, founder of Pants to Poverty). The workshops were run by Jamie Dunn, who started his first business at the age of 12 and now at age 19, is Managing Director and Co-owner of Made by Young People. Students had a tour of the City College StartUp lounge. The interactive StartUp lounge is a key part of the college’s Gazelle initiative, which takes students through a series of stages in the start up of a business, from developing a concept, to market research and business planning, finding and working with partners, to honing a pitch and presentation skills.

Jordan Gabriel The future holds potential for a journey that will lead to outstanding success. It has been said on many occasions within the world of sport that there are no shortcuts to success and that time spent on training and hard work is the secret to improved performance. This may be the theory, but in practice, within the world of table tennis, Jordan Gabriel has turned this myth upside down! Jordan started playing table tennis in the Academy’s table tennis club just two years ago. From a very early stage his talent could be seen in the natural flair he had for the game. Fortunately for Jordan the school has experienced staff who work with students like Jordan to nurture their natural talent and support them to find the performance pathways into the local club structure. This is one of two areas where Jordan has had a massive helping hand. Jordan is very fortunate that Norwich has a thriving junior club structure. He really landed on his feet when three months before he even hit his first ball, his father moved house to within 200 metres of the top table tennis club in Norfolk. This is where, under the watchful eye of head coach Mark Dare and his team, Jordan has practised many hours, honing skills that have taken him on this amazing accelerated journey to multiple success. According to Jordan’s school coach, Mr McLean (a former Scottish international player and national champion and coach), his route to success is quite unprecedented and can only be attributed to Jordan’s combination of hard work, natural talent and

flair, which Jordan has demonstrated since the very beginning. In the last year, Jordan has entered the local hall of table tennis fame and his name is being mentioned on the national scene, where despite only being 16, Jordan has shot up the national under 18 ranking list and is now in the top 200 hundred out of a thousand on the list. His list of achievements to date is nothing short of spectacular: National Junior League - Wensum Team finished 3rd, Jordan won 10 out of 10 and remained undefeated all season. National Schools under 18 team event City Academy qualified for regional finals but failed to progress to National finals but Jordan remained undefeated throughout the event. Norfolk schools individual champion won event without dropping a set and has been selected to represent Norfolk in the National Finals. Plays in Norwich and Wymondham senior leagues premier divisions on a weekly basis and has achieved over 90% win average over season. Winner of National Junior Draycott 1 star open Winner of Wymondam League Annual Senior Championships in first year of competing.

Works weekly as a coach supporting younger players at Wensum Table Tennis Club.

Jordan’s rise to fame has been rapid and his achievements to date are staggering and have come at a time when the Academy has made significant progress, becoming a good school with outstanding features. Jordan’s success has not been confined to the table tennis table. Even before the main GCSE exams come around for 2012, Jordan has already passed both his Maths and English GCSE’s and is well on his way to the crowning of a truly outstanding year. Dedication, hard work, commitment and considerable natural talent are the mix of ingredients that have transported Jordan to this amazing success and no doubt there is a lot more to come. Knowing Jordan he will not rest on his laurels but he deserves time to celebrate his success together with his family, friends, club and school. The future holds potential for a journey that will lead to outstanding success. As Jordan’s Form Teacher, Mr McLean, along with all the staff at the Academy are very proud of what Jordan has achieved and wish him every success for the future.
