I must congratulate Jessica Bullock again for her outstanding Academic Achievement on her A Levels last summer. This has won her the accolade of a ‘Norfolk Scholar’; a first for the Academy.

This must be closely followed with congratulations to Aston Oxborough for being picked to play in goal for England U16s. Another first for the Academy. Please note the DofE section where we have secured funding to support four of our students to complete work experience in Dubai over the summer. We are also taking on a new venture in forming a student crew to sail an old fishing vessel called Excelsior. This will involve ten students going to sea for a week. Academy Proud of Norfolk Scholar City Academy Norwich is proud of former A Level student Jessica Bullock who has been awarded the accolade of Norfolk County Scholar after achieving A* and A grades in her A Levels. Jessica achieved an A* in Psychology and two A grades in Biology and Chemistry, which has enabled her to attend the University of Nottingham to study Physiotherapy. The designation of Norfolk County Scholar is a special recognition given by Norfolk County Council to high achieving A Level students at schools and colleges in Norfolk.

Music Workshop Musicians and singers from CAN were fortunate enough to be invited back to Norwich High School for Girls for their second music workshop as part of their Winter Arts Festival.

Over 150 students joined forces to create a string orchestra, wind band, percussion ensemble, guitar group and choir, who performed to parents at the end of the day.

Brave Amber Shaves Head for Macmillan Cancer Research CAN student Amber Reeve has had her head shaved to raise money for the Macmillan charity. On Amber’s 16th birthday, she was more concerned about others than herself. Instead of being consumed by opening presents and having the best party, Amber decided to have her head shaved to raise money for Macmillan cancer support. At 3.45pm, the Academy Atrium filled with students, press and representatives from Macmillan who sang happy birthday to Amber as she came down the stairs and took

her seat ready for the cut. Miss Tilson was in charge of the clippers, a teacher who has been an inspiration to Amber, beating cancer herself. Within 10 minutes, Amber’s hair had gone and she was left looking shocked at her reflection. Getting used to having no hair will take time. Amber has raised over £500 through her efforts, a great achievement. Even her cut hair isn’t going to waste as it’s being sent off to another charity who make wigs for children going through chemotherapy.

Aston Oxborough CAN student Aston Oxborough recently made his debut in the England U16 squad playing against Denmark. Goalkeeper Aston is a Norwich City Football Academy student and has studied at CAN since September 2012. The match was the second in a series of three in the UEFA development tournament played at St George’s Park.

Our students had the opportunity to mix with and learn from students from Reepham High School and Flegg High School, as well as musicians from Norwich High School for Girls. They worked hard to keep up with some very talented players and enjoyed making new friends. Each musical group worked on a few pieces of the concert and then one large scale piece, which all the musicians came together to perform.

It was another great day, where we learnt a lot about different styles of music as well as performance techniques.

Canteen Competition A competition was held for form groups to name the Academy canteen. Form C3 put forward the winning idea of naming it the ‘CANteria’. For our winners prize, the whole form received an invitation to a two course meal. The tables had been set out beautifully and everyone was served by Sally, the canteen manager. It was lovely for the whole form to spend some quality time together. The food was delicious and everyone had a great time.

On Saturday 8th February 2014, 43 City Academy Norwich Art and Photography students and eight members of Creativity staff headed off for our annual visit to London. The main purpose of the trip was to visit the famous Saatchi Gallery. The group looked around the “Body Language” exhibition. This vast exhibition is devoted to the depiction of the human body: demonstrating the prevalence of the human form in contemporary art. Body Language features 19 emerging international artists, working in various and contrasting mediums, who examine how the body is used, and has been used throughout art history. It was an amazing exhibition. The students were interested in the figurative work and asked relevant questions to support their GCSE work. The sun was shining and the students were able to sit outside on the steps of the Saatchi Gallery to eat lunch. They thoroughly enjoyed their time in London and some had the chance to look round Chelsea market too. 6

Duke of Edinburgh Exciting Opportunities

There are loads of exciting opportunities coming up; events and trips organised by those involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award at City Academy Norwich. Below you will find details of some of them.

Year 10 Cambridge Challenge Day A select group of six fine students left CAN for Cambridge early on the morning of 20th January bound for Cambridge University, Emmanuel College, kindly driven by Mr Lay, to whom we are very grateful. These days are organised each year by Cambridge University and give youngsters the chance to meet current Cambridge University students, experience ‘real’ University teaching by a current expert and have a lively debate with pupils from other schools.

Each year she takes hundreds of people to sea, sailing about 7,000 miles around the western seaboard of Europe and participating in major maritime events such as the Tall Ships Race.

The Big Freeze Spaces are filling up fast for this overnight event that sees students sponsored to stay overnight on the school field. Last year over £3,000 was raised for charity and this year we aim to beat it again. A percentage of this goes toward Shelter, a charity that supports the homeless in Norwich and across the UK. The rest is fed back into our students, giving those that may not normally be able to take part, the chance to experience something

France Trip The France trip is going ahead for the second year running and is now full! Fifty students will be going on an activities holiday to the Dordogne where they will take part in water sports, rock climbing, gorge walking and many other activities. With it being organised by those involved in The Duke of Edinburgh 8

Our students excelled themselves amongst their peers from other schools, quickly solving the riddle: “If Susan is 10, Arabella is 20, and Jim and Neal are both 5, but Richard is 10, how old is Jennifer?” Furthermore they answered some of Dr Vaux’s questions on British versus American syntax, sentence construction and its place in the world during his lecture, which was one of their many highlights! A great time was had by all, with CAN students displaying the very best qualities; irrepressible inquisitiveness, brilliant behaviour and marvellous manners. All in all they were a delightful bunch who benefited greatly from this chance to see a prestigious Higher Education establishment and definitely made the most of the opportunity. Well done to everyone!

Expeditions There are four expeditions going out in the near future with both Bronze and Silver students going away to do practices and assessed routes. Bronze will be based in East Anglia, whereas Silver are going to be visiting the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire. If you would like to get involved and take your award, see Mr Deal or Mr Williams. LRC News Hayley Long – Author Visit On Monday 3rd March, ‘What’s up with Jody Barton?’ author, Hayley Long, came to talk to two classes of Year 8 students about her books. Hayley’s love of writing was inspired by reading ‘The Faraway Tree’,

‘The Twits’ and ‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾’ when she was young. Hayley explained that she tries to write stories that aren’t just ‘boy meets girl’, but that have deeper, more interesting plots. Her books include ‘Downside Up’, ‘What’s up with Jody Barton?’ and

the ‘Lottie Biggs’ trilogy, and she is currently working on a book called ‘Being a Girl’, the follow-up to James Dawson’s ‘Being a Boy’. After the talk, the LRC’s copies of Hayley’s books flew off the shelves and we are eagerly awaiting student reviews!

LRC Event – Hobbit Visit On the last day of term a small group of students, led by two members of the Learning Team, ventured to the Odeon cinema in order to watch ‘The Hobbit, The Desolation of Smaug’. This was a reward for their efforts and contributions during the last year, in the various book groups that the LRC runs throughout the week during form time.

The trip was in every way a huge success with students and staff having a ‘fantabulous’ time (with the exception of Mr Drohan, who maintained in the face of some stout opposition, that the book was better!). The students’ behaviour was exemplary throughout and they conducted themselves superbly – they were a credit to the Academy.

Year 7 Prefects Launch Readathon at CAN Big congratulations to 24 students from Year 7 who have been selected as prefects to work within their year group. There are four prefects from each Form Group in Year 7. Some of their duties involve keeping the Year 7 area tidy, relaying important information to their Form Group, presentations in assemblies and helping staff with various duties. One of the first tasks given to the prefects was to launch Readathon

to their Form Groups as part of CANs celebration of World Book Day. The Readathon is a brilliant way to get into reading and to raise money for charity. Students can do this by choosing a book to read (this could be an e-book, fact, fiction or even a magazine), find sponsors, read and then collect in the sponsor money. It’s as simple as that! Year 7 students can also earn e-praise points by bringing a reading book to school.

Cathy Cassidy On Friday 7th February, 38 girls from Years 7 and 8 went to Sewell Park College to meet famous children’s author Cathy Cassidy. Cathy spoke about how daydreaming was never a waste of time, and quizzed the girls on which character in her books they were most like. There was plenty of time for photos and signing, and even time for a couple of selfies!

City Academy Norwich Hosts International Kids’ Lit Quiz City Academy Norwich welcomed 31 teams of 11 to 13 year olds from across Norfolk and Suffolk on Wednesday 21st November when they hosted the regional heat of the Kids’ Lit Quiz.

Year 8 student Lucius Jones said:“The quiz was fun and informative. I have learnt that a griffin is a lion and an eagle and I have also learned the names of a lot of authors and books.”

Teams from over 17 schools gathered in the Atrium where they were tested on a wide range of children’s literature including myths and legends and comic strips as well as classic and contemporary books. Among the competitors were two teams of Year 7 and 8 students from City Academy Norwich.

Accelerated Reader The Accelerated Reading scheme at City Academy for Year 7 has been a great success this year, motivating even reluctant students to read and encouraging friendly competition both in classes and across the year group. Students take a test at the beginning of term to determine their reading

comprehension level, and then choose from a wide selection of suitable books to enjoy. Once they have read the book, they then use an iPad to take a reading comprehension quiz, are allocated points and can track their progress using their virtual bookshelf.

Students have been really motivated by this scheme and we now have a handful of Accelerated Reader millionaires – meaning students who have read over one million words on the Accelerated Reader programme.

The Kids’ Lit Quiz is an international competition hosted by Wayne Mills, Senior Lecturer of the University of Auckland in New Zealand. The quiz aims to improve literacy among young people and encourage them to read more. Year 7 student Alex Aarunstrup said: “The quiz was really fun and it gave me the chance to work with people from the school who I don’t know.”

CAN Sports Relief Bake-Off

CAN Basketballers Watch Exciting Cup Final On Sunday 12th January, 15 pupils from the Academy went on a trip to watch the British Basketball League (BBL) Cup Final at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. The pupils were all part of the Academy’s two new basketball teams (Year 7/8 & Year 9-11) set up this year. The match was between Leicester Riders and the Newcastle Eagles and was a nail biting affair. Newcastle led for most of the match but Leicester finished the match strongly and just pipped the Eagles in the final minutes to take the title. The trip was run by Mr Osborne from the Sports Department and Mr Caridade who coaches the Year 10 and 11 basketball team.

Mr Osborne said; “It was great to be able to take the pupils to watch such an exciting match. We hope that the experience will help develop their interest in basketball and encourage them to train hard and develop their own skills and fitness.” Year 11 pupil Tariq Pell said; “It was a brilliant experience and we had a fantastic team spirit throughout the trip.” The new academy basketball teams train on a weekly basis and have recently started to play friendly matches against other schools. It is hoped that the teams will enter local competitive school basketball leagues during the next academic year.

Ski slopes, footballs, diving boards and bob-sleighs. You would think we’d be talking about the latest television sports coverage, but no… we are talking about City Academy’s Sports Relief Bake-Off. Let me tell you more… A fantastic charity event that saw 10 teams, made up of one student and one staff member, competing to make a cake creation with a sports theme. All teams were given the same Victoria sponge recipe and had to collaborate to design and make decorative changes to the cake to hopefully win the coveted honour of

gloating to everyone for the rest of the week! During an hour and a half of giggles and mad dashes around the kitchen, with shouts of “where’s the flour?”, the final products were judged by Mr Mullis and Mrs Temple. Third place was an amazing feat of sponge engineering from Mr Murray and Kyle Cole of a spiral slalom ski-slope complete with miniature skiers. Second place went to Mr Sivitter and Jordan Orford’s bob-sleigh design, which incorporated a clever structure, two coloured sponge and amazing piping from Jordan.

The cake that was judged to be the winner was a tribute to Olympic diver Tom Daly splashing into buttercream icing, wearing his union jack trunks. This cake was made by Mrs Price and Devlin Solomon. The following day the cakes were sold to generous customers who, with the help of supportive sellers Clairemine, Chloe & Aysegul, managed to raise just over £43. Thank you to all who took part, organised, bought and sold the cakes. It was an amazingly funny experience, which we hope to be able to repeat in the future. Well done everyone.

Psychology London Trip On Friday 13th December, the Psychology option group went on a visit to London by train. While in London the students visited the Freud museum. Students were able to see first-hand what had influenced Freud. Highlights of this visit for the students included seeing Freud’s preserved study and the place where Freud passed away.

Students also had the opportunity to revise knowledge of the dreams unit, which we were studying in class. After

this the students were able to see London sights. For some students this was their first trip to the capital.

Computing at City Academy Norwich

STEM On Thursday 27th January, the Year 8 STEM group had the opportunity of attending a workshop led by Camouflaged Learning. Students were put into teams of 3, working together to create a water resistant suit for a formula one driver. This creation was then put to the test by using a water gun and indicator paper to see which team’s suit worked best to resist water! Other challenges included working in teams to test their coordination skills and strength. It tested student’s Engineering, Maths and Science skills, while also testing their communication and teamwork skills. There was a real hard-working atmosphere, with every single student completely engaged in the activity. It was a fun and educational morning, which saw the students really working and thinking together.

Project to Reduce and Reuse Computer Waste Congratulations to Britney Albett, Chloe Boland, Shania Frost, Ryan Fuller and Hayden Lovell for winning candy for their efforts. Also congratulations to Sophie Saunders and Elizabeth Walker for winning

cinema tickets for their efforts. The days biggest winner was Connor Abbott who won both cinema tickets and candy. Well done to everyone who took part.

Congratulations to Courtney, Oliver and Elvinas on being selected as the regional winners of London and South East for this year’s Zurich Municipal and The Guardian Teacher Network – School We’d Like competition.

The feedback was, ‘The students performed especially well. This is a project with so much promise; our judges were excited by its innovation, sustainability, and potential for further collaboration from the wider school community.

We can see big things for the initiative and its participants in the future.’ The CAN students are off to the ‘Winner’s Day final’ on Saturday 22nd March, where they will pitch for a £5,000 cash prize to help make their idea a national pilot.

Cisco Invent This popular after-school club continues to flourish. Regularly attracting 40+ students ranging from Year 7 to 11. The digital ambassadors are on hand to help you out with building a PC to take home, creating your own Minecraft educational world using minecraft.edu. or, if you have any ideas for some other great projects, such as touch screen tables, mouse gloves and banana keyboards(!) they’re there to help make these happen.

UK Schools Pilot New Gadgeteer Kit for Education Jamie Steward, one of the pilot students reported: “These are fantastic! I really enjoyed learning programming using the electronic kits!”. The projects that are developed include a tunes generator, stop watch, traffic lights, burglar

alarm, morse code generator and a game. Each project covers a different set of programming concepts in an incremental way so that students gradually build up their confidence in programming.

More Digital Ambassadors Required If you have a love of all things digital and a passion to help others engage in learning, then please contact Mr J Thompson. The role will involve an after-school commitment and require you to work with primary school teachers and learners in supporting the new computing curriculum.

Mr Thompson Mr Thompson bemoaned the fact that chairs were grouping themselves in clusters during lunchtime, as if they had a life of their own in the L3 classroom. Although he had put the movement of the chairs down to the chaos theory, and was beginning to explore the possibility of poltergeist, he was relieved to find the culprits! There’s a particular bewildered kind of facial expression that goes along with the word perplexed. It’s the kind of emotion that’s hard to disguise. The Latin root perplexus means “confused or entangled,” and “entangled” is a great way to imagine the tangled thoughts and confusion of Mr Thompson…

Full Time Schools Programme at City Academy Norwich The link between Norwich City Football Academy and City Academy Norwich gained national recognition on Wednesday 26th February 2014 at the Premier League Education Conference. Mr Wells travelled to the Hawthorns (West Bromwich Albion) and presented an outline of the weekly schools programme to representatives from every premier league club across the country. The programme at City Academy Norwich had previously been recognised as national good practice by Martyn Heather (Head of Education for the Premier League) when he visited the Academy in January. Ged Roddy CBE (Head of Youth Development, Premier League) started the conference with a presentation on the importance of education and learning in the modern professional football game.

This was followed by a presentation by Sir Paul Grant (Headteacher Robert Clack High School) and highlighted the link he has with West Ham United FC. Following lunch, Pam Wright OBE (Executive Headteacher) presented how Wade Deacon Academy works collaboratively with Everton FC to provide a programme for the Everton players. In his 45 minute presentation, Mr Wells outlined a day in the life of a Norwich City Football Academy player, whilst also offering suggestions on what makes a successful full time schools programme. It was brilliant to have all the collaborative hard work between City Academy Norwich and Norwich City Football Academy recognised on such a big stage. Since the conference, Mr Wells has subsequently joined the Education Advisory Group for the Premier League.

Year 7 ‘Book Publishers’ Project Year 7 students have been working with local primary school students in their ‘Book Publishers’ project. We visited two local primary schools: West Earlham Junior School and St Michael’s Junior School. Year 7 students from CAN were paired with a younger pupil and had to create a superhero story just for them. Before the students met their partners, they had to come up with some questions. They created a questionnaire to take to their partner’s school. In the first visit students interviewed their primary school partner about their likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. They were asked to focus on ‘Skills for Life’ (these are the skills underpinning the Year 7 curriculum: Verbal Communication, Written Communication, SelfManagement, Teamwork, Problem Solving and Initiative). The interviews

went really well and the students enjoyed meeting each other and talking about life at CAN. The next two weeks were spent creating a superhero story, with their primary school partner as the main character. They had to try to include the information about their partner that they had discovered in the interviews. The stories were drafted, redrafted and evaluated. The students worked really hard to ensure that their final draft was excellent. They could then choose a way of ‘publishing’ their story, either by creating a big book, a pop-up book or an iBook on the iPads. They visited specific skills workshops for their chosen method and worked hard all week to create a high quality finished product. When the books were ‘published’, the primary school classes came to CAN

to listen to the stories that had been written for them. They really enjoyed hearing their stories and were full of praise for our Year 7 students. Year 7s were extremely motivated and worked really hard to create fantastic books for their partners. They were very concerned with improving the quality of their book and making it interesting; many students chose to stay in over lunch and break times to complete their story on time. Year 7 students have made significant and accelerated progress in their writing through their hard work. The finished stories were fantastic and the younger students were delighted with them. Our students should be very proud of what they achieved on this project.

The Trip to the UEA When we got our letter we were delighted with the opportunity to go to the UEA to do sports. After walking to the UEA we went to the seats in front of the squash courts. We were placed into groups. Unfortunately me and Jake were not in a group together but we did the same activities, which were Judo and Archery. We then went and got changed in the humungous changing rooms. My first activity was Judo. First we had to warm up and then get into pairs. Our first task was to stand one foot behind the other and try to get each other off the line. After a few similar activities we played Sumo which was really fun. Billy won. We then went back to the steps to get a bottle of water. My final sport was Archery which was really fun. The first activity was to fire our arrows at the target to get points. We started to fire our arrows but instead of shooting for points it was for food and drinks. Finally we had to shoot some balloons, but some of them had something inside so they wouldn’t pop.

After doing our two activities we went to lunch. After lunch we went to the main square of the university and had a little Q&A session. Then we went into a classroom where we met a lady and learnt about her job. She was a Sports Scientist. She studies athletes’ bodies to see how it is possible for them to compete at the level they do. After that lesson we went into the classroom next door where we learnt about winning and how to win by staying healthy and eating the right things. We had a big sheet of A3 paper and we had to write all the key elements of keeping fit and having a staple diet. When the lesson ended we were given a goody bag with a water bottle, pen and a booklet of what it would be like to go to the UEA. It was a great day and it was good to have the opportunity to experience what it would be like at the UEA. By Jake McCarthy and Jamie Goodacre

On the 25th February, 32 boys were chosen to go to the UEA for a trip about sports and life at university. They were chosen as they are effective learners in Year 7 and have represented City Academy with pride and joy. There were four activities to do: judo, archery, rock climbing and fencing. As there was a short amount of time, arriving around 10.00am students had 2 hours of activities. Sean was one of the 32 who was able to do the activities. He said ‘It was amazing and the best time of my life. My favourite activity was archery and it was an amazing experience’.
