Our college has many fantastic new facilities. Whilst our college has been around in the city of Norwich for 125 years, a lot of the buildings and facilities on our main campus have been built or newly refurbished within the last couple of years. Students visit our high-tech StartUp Lounge for a wide range of experience of work activities, as well as inspiring talks and support for employability skills and more. Creative and performing arts students now have a stunning new, award-winning, Creative Arts Building in which to learn.

The Students’ Union is made-up of every single student at City College Norwich and is here to support you during your studies. Once you have enrolled as a student you automatically become a member of City College Norwich’s Students’ Union which is affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS). Members have an opportunity to get involved at all levels of the work of the Students’ Union including club nights and band nights to representation at Student Parliament and on the college’s board of Governors. Many students have been involved in making a difference and in a year of massive change to the education sector the Students’ Union has stood firm for your views and values. As a member of the Students’ Union you have access to a variety of student groups, societies, and associations. Whether you want to meet new people, continue a hobby or skill, learn something new or just get involved with student life, there is a group for you. However; if there isn’t a group to suit your interest, we will be pleased to help you create it. Students’ Union members are welcome to join any student groups or sports clubs which represent an interest or passion. The Executive Committee

The Students’ Union is made up of every single student at City College Norwich and is here to support you during your studies. It is therefore essential that it is the members that drive the direction that the Students’ Union takes and the issues and activities that it moves forward.

Every autumn, nominations open for the elections to the Students’ Union Executive Committee. Any student at the college can be nominated for one of the 17 positions available.

Class Representatives The Class Representative scheme exists to ensure that students have a voice in the academic part of your life at the college. Every student is represented by their own Class Representative to ensure that they have a say on their education. You will have the opportunity to vote for your Class Representative at the start of the course. Better still, why not stand to become a Class Representative yourself?

All students at City College Norwich will receive a student ID card. This card acts as proof of your membership to the Students’ Union and also entitles you to vote in the Students’ Union elections. As part of being a member of the Students’ Union at college you will also become a member of the National Union of Students (NUS). NUS have gone the extra mile to make sure students are able to get the most out of life. As well as supporting students across the country and lobbying Parliament for increased rights and provision for students, NUS has created NUS Extra to help you make the most of your student finances. For extra savings, you can buy an NUS Extra card from the Students’ Union office. Whether it’s dancing to fitness with Zumba or snow ploughing down the ski slopes, CCN Active wants to create a healthier you. Supported Learning at City College Norwich

Curriculum City College Norwich caters for those students who have learning difficulties, disabilities or who have not engaged well with formal education and are “starting out” again. For many students, coming to college will be a huge step – a step from childhood to adulthood – and this will involve many changes, new freedoms and, with that, new responsibilities. It will mean students making more decisions for themselves and gaining greater independence in their learning. Progression is a fundamental aim within the school. Within the Supported Learning curriculum we offer bespoke, small group provision, with a team of dedicated staff who deliver on it. We recognise the challenges our students face and endeavour to put the right levels of encouragement and support to meet the individual needs of our students. Students will find high quality resources and facilities to support them as they enter the world of adulthood, further learning and employment. These include workshop areas where they can practice art, craft, dance, drama and sport. We have an industry scale greenhouse, a shop that serves the needs of the college community and a professional kitchen. Alongside these we have well-equipped classrooms for developing English, Maths and personal & social skills.

For students with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) we have brand new facilities equipped with resources and materials designed for their needs. These include sensory areas, therapeutic exercise facilities, personal care suites and an independent living skills development area. College is about working hard and progressing and staff attempt to encourage and inspire all students to become valuable members of society and, potentially, the workforce. However, it is also recognised that coming to college is about making friends and developing a good social life. We have an excellent Tutorial Support team who can offer friendly guidance and advice in the area of person and social skills.

Support

City College Norwich is passionate about supporting students with Learning Disabilities and/or Difficulties. The Supported Learning team is responsible for ensuring that effective and appropriate support provision is allocated to students requiring assistance with accessing their academic studies. How do students get support?

Supported Learning aims to support each students to reach their full potential and achieve their goals. We strive to support each student to become an independent learner and adapt the support they need as part of their learning progresses.

Support on application

A student should disclose their disability or difficulty to help us know where to place support.

Is their difficulty is dyslexia, dyscalculia or Mears Irlen?

They can make an appointment with our SpLD (Specific Learning Difference) team once their course has started. They can do this at any reception desk or at the Advice Shop on the main site. The SpLD team can assess the student for exam concessions, which might give them extra time in exams or have a reader or scribe present in their exam.

Support through their tutor

If you would like more information about support or don’t want support please let us know.

If you don’t tell us that you might need support upon application to the college, a tutor can contact us on your behalf and arrange a meeting to discuss your support needs.

Types of support

Apprenticeship support

• In class support can be one to one, where a member of Supported Learning is with the student on an individual basis • Shared support where we support the student and others in the class • Discreet support where the student might not want everyone to know and our support staff can help them without it being obvious • Off course support to help with each students work, supporting them at lunch time or taking them to a taxi etc.

If a student has a Statement / LDA or EHCP

We will already be aware of their support needs before they come to college and we will contact them to get the right kind of support to meet their needs. However, if they do not want support they can tell us at any point.

You can talk to your assessor about support needs and we can assess in the workplace or at college to help with exam concessions.

Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

The DSA is a non means-tested grant for disabled Higher Education learners. Its purpose is to pay for extra costs incurred by the student, as a direct result of their disability, to enable them to attend and undertake their course of study. DSA’s are not paid as a set amount; this is determined by an assessment which will identify the required equipment and support and the subsequent costs. The learner’s LEA administers the DSA and confirms eligibility and learners have to apply to them. Applications for DSA can be submitted before the start or during the course. Phoenix Plus GCSEs Phoenix Plus GCSEs is a one year course for students aged 16 - 18 to study up to five GCSEs. The course is for students from wide and varying backgrounds. Students applying to Phoenix Plus may have interrupted secondary education or have specific reasons which have prevented them from achieving their expected GCSE results. Through completing the Phoenix Plus programme you can access any number of progression routes, although normally the intended progression is A Levels. The course is designed to give students a ‘second chance’ to gain the qualifications they require to access A Level provision. Students are supported and encouraged by a small, dedicated team of lecturers, comprehensive student support in and out of sessions, alongside an effective pastoral team. The college has two dedicated centres for Higher Education; St Andrews House and Norfolk House, both fantastically situated in the heart of Norwich city centre. These facilities are provided solely for the use of our Higher Education students and faculty with dedicated class, social and study spaces. It sometimes surprises people to learn that City College Norwich is home to one of the largest sixth forms in Norfolk and that every year hundreds of young people like you choose to study for A Levels. In March 2013, Ofsted rated City College Norwich as “Good”, describing Science and Maths teaching, learning and assessment as consistently “Good” with some particular provision rated as “Outstanding” (grade 1) and Sixth Form Centre tutorial support as “Good”.

Our A Level pass rates are consistently good and reached 99% in 2015. At the Sixth Form Centre, there’s a great breadth of subject choice, expert teaching and professional individual tutorial support both for your studies and to help you move on to Higher Education or employment. GCSE English

GCSE English is essential for your future plans, whether further study in a vocational or academic area, university, or employment. Being able to communicate effectively and have a good command of written and spoken English is a skill for life.

City College Norwich is committed to supporting you to improve your English and Maths skills while studying with us, giving you confidence and a positive attitude towards the subjects. It will also enable you to recognise the importance of English and Maths in your own lives and society.

GCSE English at City College Norwich will feature areas of study such as: • Creative writing (fiction and non-fiction) – produce written texts for specific audiences using devices to inform, entertain, argue, persuade and advise. • Prose – understand themes, ideas and characters in texts through the use of language and linguistic devices. • Poetry – use linguistic skills gained in class to develop a personal response to a poem. • Drama – study a play from Britain’s literary history and consider how literary devices make these texts relevant and popular today. • Spoken language study – develop an understanding of how people speak differently in a variety of situations.

Maths is a central part of your progression to other courses and employment. It isn’t just about knowing how to carry out certain calculations. It is about you recognising problems, pursuing solutions and communicating explanations. GCSE Maths at City College Norwich will feature areas of study such as: • Number – investigating whole numbers and decimals in a variety of ways and increasing an awareness of number in familiar and unfamiliar situations. • Algebra – being able to manipulate mathematical information and follow methods to solve problems using algebraic language/symbols. • Geometry – this involves learning how to construct accurate shapes and angles, problem solve with angles such as with bearings and to work out missing angles and sides of shapes. • Shape and Space – problem solving using shapes e.g. perimeter, area, volume and surface area as well as dealing with compound measures such as speed, distance and time. • Statistics – display and interpret data, appreciating that there are appropriate ways to show particular types of data. The rules and methods of basic probability is also taught.

Financial support Student funding can seem a complicated and daunting subject and you may not be sure what you are entitled to. Our Student Advisers (Finance) can provide you with clear, accurate and confidential advice. You can meet them in The Advice Shop in the Norwich Building. They are available for appointments between 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. To book an appointment please call 01603 773 773. Or for further information/advice email financialadvice@ccn.ac.uk

Tuition and Registration Fees If you are under 19 on the 31st August 2015 prior to the start of your course and attending an EFA (Education Funding Agency) funded course, then your tuition and registration fees will normally be free. If you are over 19, you will normally be liable for fees. However, if you are studying for your first full Level 2 qualification (and you are under 24) or your first full Level 3 qualification (and you are under 24) - then your tuition and registration fees may be free. There is also a fee remission system if you are under 24 and studying at Entry Level 1 or Level 1 and you don’t already hold a full Level 2 qualification. If you are unemployed at the time of enrolment, and in receipt of certain benefits, you may be eligible for a tuition fee remission.

16-19 Bursary Fund If you are under 19 on 31st August 2015 and on an EFA funded course – you may be eligible for support from the 16-19 Bursary Fund. The aim of the fund is to help cover some of the financial costs of coming to college. The scheme comprises of two elements: 1. General hardship fund to help towards costs such as transport, equipment, books and study trips if your parents have a household income of £22,000 or less. 2. Vulnerable Young Person’s Bursary of up to £1,200 - if you are in care, a care leaver, or receive Income Support/ Universal Credit in your own right or you receive Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment and Employment Support Allowance.

Adult Discretionary Learner Support Fund (19+) If you are 19 or over and on a SFA (Skills Funding Agency) funded course the college has a Learner Support Fund that can provide support if you are on a low income. If you have a gross household income of £22,000 or less per year, you will be eligible to apply. If you are married or living with a partner we will assess your joint income but you will be eligible to apply if it is below £25,000 p.a. We do not assess parental income for the Learner Support Fund. Help with travel, child care, equipment and registration fees may be available. The fund cannot be used to pay tuition fees.

Support is normally paid halftermly – subject to satisfactory attendance of 85% or more. If attendance falls below 85% then payments may be cancelled. Please contact the Advice Shop for more information or an application form.

There may be a tuition fee loan available to you if you are 24 and over and wish to study for a Level 3 or Level 4 course. The system operates in a similar way to Higher Education student loans with repayments due after the course is completed and you are earning £21,000 or over. Access students who take out a loan, progress on to a Higher Education course and successfully complete it will have their 24+ loan cancelled. You can apply online once you have received a special offer letter from the college which contains course reference numbers/ tuition fee amounts etc.

24+ Advanced Learning Loans Bursary This is a hardship fund designed to help with costs such as travel, child care and books/equipment etc if you have taken out a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan and are on a low income. If you are single and have a household income of under £22,000 p.a. you will be eligible to apply. If you are married or live with a partner you will be eligible if your income is below £25,000. Application forms for this scheme will be available from the Advice Shop or Norfolk House. Proof of eligibility for the 24+ loan and details of household income will be required. Who is eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan? Individuals who are: • aged 24 or over at the start of their course • undertaking an eligible course • meet the residency criteria • resident in the UK • have not previously had a loan to do the same qualification type and level of qualification. Loans will not be means tested (or subject to credit checks) and any individual who meets the criteria above will be able to apply for a loan irrespective of their current employment status.

Travel Assistance from Norfolk County Council For Norfolk residents, this may be available if you are: • aged under 19, • studying at least 16 hours per week • live more than three miles from the college (and travel on a core route). A contribution of either £360 or £480 can be expected depending on household income. This contribution can be paid in instalments. On some routes, daily return passes of £2.15 or £2.65 will be available - subject to household income. These tickets can be purchased on the bus. NB you will need to have applied to Norfolk County Council first to be eligible. at City College Norwich Apprenticeships are a great way to earn while you learn and an ideal alternative if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to do a full-time programme but want to get into work whilst continuing your education. City College Norwich works with nearly 800 employers to provide apprenticeships, from the largest employers in the country through to small, ambitious businesses that are keen to grow. We work collaboratively with those employers to deliver training both on and off the job. In most cases your programme will involve day release delivery at the college as well as planned training and development with a mentor in the workplace.

CELEBRATING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Construction students win Carter Cup in building apprentices’ competition Construction students from City College Norwich celebrated their achievements after winning the coveted Carter Cup, for the first time since 1999, as well as a total of seven medals in the Norfolk and Waveney Building Apprentices’ Competition. The competition, which took place at the Norfolk Showground on Wednesday 11th March, saw 60 apprentices and college students put their construction skills to the test against the clock as they competed for medals in six disciplines: bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, electrical, painting and decorating, plumbing, and multi-skills.

There are a wide range of courses to choose from, each with a distinct specialism, but all offering students the chance to get an insight into the sector and develop their skills as practitioners. The school has a very active programme of events using venues throughout the county and also encourages students to spend time at events on a national stage, such as the Latitude Festival or in the O2 arena. In many cases, subjects are taught by practicing artists in the top class facilities at the college â&#x20AC;&#x201C; such as our state-ofthe-art, award winning Creative Arts Building. As well as creative learning spaces there is a wealth of

Facilities include photography studios, digital editing suites, a TV studio, a radio studio, digital graphic design labs, animation studios, 3D sculpture workshops, fashion studios, a working theatre and dance spaces. The college also maintains excellent links with large local partners, such as the BBC, Archant, Norwich Theatre Royal, the Norwich Castle, Mustard TV, UEA and others. These links make it possible for students to complete their course with a much clearer idea of the career options available to them and some really great work experience. Students from City College Norwich have progressed into some of the leading universities, art schools, schools of stage performance and dance, on to specialist courses and, in many cases, on to successful self employment as practitioners.

Training to be a success in sport is not simply about getting across the line first, it is about being part of a team that makes achievement possible for everyone. By choosing a course in the sports sector at City College Norwich you will be becoming part of that winning team. Courses at the college are divided into four main areas, each enabling students to move into a variety of careers. The areas are Sports Science, Exercise and Fitness, Sports Therapy and Outdoor Adventure. Sports Science covers anatomy and physiology as well as diet and professional athleticism, while Exercise and Fitness focuses on physical exercise, leadership and working with clients. Outdoor adventure draws on elements of both areas, but applying them to outdoor education and in sports such as mountain biking, rock climbing or kayaking.

At every stage, the courses place an emphasis on getting â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;liveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; professional experience and students are encouraged to utilise the college links with organisations such as the Norfolk County Football Association and the Football Development Centre, amongst others. Outdoor Adventure students work closely with Eaton Vale, a specialist outdoor education facility in Norwich. Students could have the opportunity to run development sessions in a wide variety of sports throughout the county, gaining the experience needed to move into a huge variety of careers. These could include Personal Training, Recreation Management, Sports Therapy, Coaching, Sports Psychology, Strength and Conditioning work, and Nutrition. There is a state-of-the-art gym on the college site as well as the flexibility within your course to continue sports competition, if you choose to do so.

We are a few minutes walk from the city centre on Ipswich road. From the St Stephen’s Street roundabout (near the bus station), follow signs to Ipswich. A few hundred metres south of the roundabout the A11 and A140 divide: take the left fork and the college is about 300 metres further along on the left. There is limited pay and display parking on campus, but we also offer a subsidised Park & Ride scheme from the County Council site on Harford roundabout (near Tesco on the A140/ A47 junction).

We have two Higher Education Centres at St Andrews House and Norfolk House – both in the heart of the city centre. There is no car parking reserved for students on site, but the St Andrews car park is just a few hundred yards away along the same road, or your nearest bus stops are on Castle Meadow, Tombland or Prince of Wales Road.
