City College Norwich prides itself on its facilities – and they’re getting bigger and better. Over the last few years we have created the 21st Century StartUp Lounge, constructed the award winning Creative Arts Building, installed a new, modular learning space (the Happisburgh Building), demolished our outdated workshops and completely rebuilt Broadland Drive to be a central hub for students and replaced both windows and roof in our main building. All of this to ensure that our students get the very best in places to learn and spaces to socialise. Superb facilities would be nothing without superb staff – and we have
those too! Professional, friendly and supportive teachers deliver high quality teaching and instruction in a friendly and supportive environment that is designed to meet students’ individual needs. Coming to college means making new friends and mixing education with a great social life. What is the Gazelle Colleges Group? The Gazelle Colleges Group is a group of 23 further education Colleges across the UK that give students the opportunity to learn in a work-focused environment, and gain commercial experience that will help you succeed in the workplace, or as an entrepreneur.
What is different about a Gazelle College? Gazelle Colleges are moving away from the traditional classroom learning environment towards an approach that puts you at the centre of your college career. You will have a number of opportunities to work in commercial environments, attend unique events and take part in enterprise competitions whilst studying for a qualification in your chosen subject.

How does it change my day-to-day life at College? It depends on your chosen course of study but the opportunities to make the most of your time at college will be much greater, especially when it comes to learning the work-relevant skills that will help you find and be successful in a job. You don’t get a special qualification, however by taking part in Gazelle activities and events you will be able to demonstrate your enhanced professional and personal skills. You will be more likely to have the commercial experience you need to either get a job you really want or to set up your own business. Getting involved with Gazelle activities will make your qualification more valuable to you and future employers in the long term.
How will this improve my chances of getting a job? The skills that you develop and experiences you have while at a Gazelle College will give you a better chance of impressing employers at interview and when you’re starting a new job. The Students’ Union is made-up of every single student at City College Norwich and is here to support you during your studies. Once you have enrolled as a student you automatically become a member of City College Norwich’s Students’ Union which is affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS).
Members have an opportunity to get involved at all levels of the work of the Students’ Union including club nights and band nights to representation at Student Parliament and on the College’s board of Governors. Many students have been involved in making a difference and in a year of massive change to the education sector the Students’ Union has stood firm for your views and values. As a member of the Students’ Union you have access to a variety of student groups, societies, and associations. Whether you want to meet new people, continue a hobby or skill, learn something new or just get involved with student life, there is a group for you. However; if there isn’t a group to suit your interest, we will be pleased to help you create it. Students’ Union members are welcome to join any student groups or sports clubs which represent an interest or passion. Making your voice heard
The Executive Committee
The Students’ Union is made up of every single student at City College Norwich and is here to support you during your studies. It is therefore essential that it is the members that drive the direction that the Students’ Union takes and the issues and activities that it moves forward.
Every autumn, nominations open for the elections to the Students’ Union Executive Committee. Any student at the College can be nominated for one of the 17 positions available.
Class Representatives The Class Representative scheme exists to ensure that students have a voice in the academic part of your life at the College. Every student is represented by their own Class Representative to ensure that they have a say on their education. You will have the opportunity to vote for your Class Representative at the start of the course. Better still, why not stand to become a Class Representative yourself?
All students at City College Norwich will receive a blue student ID card. This card acts as proof of your membership to the Students’ Union and also entitles you to vote in the Students’ Union elections. As part of being a member of the Students’ Union at College you will also become a member of the National Union of Students (NUS). NUS have gone the extra mile to make sure students are able to get the most out of life. As well as supporting students across the country and lobbying Parliament for increased rights and provision for students, NUS has created NUS Extra to help you make the most of your student finances. Inspiring a healthier and more active generation at City College Norwich CCN Active aims to provide the City College Norwich community with a dynamic programme of sports and physical activities. Whether it’s dancing to fitness with Zumba or snow ploughing down the ski slopes, CCN Active wants to create a healthier you. You might be interested in participating on a recreational basis, or want to ‘try out’ for one of the competitive teams or wish to volunteer – whatever you are keen on, get in touch.
CCN Active is funded through Sport England’s Legacy Funding and overseen by our College Sport Maker. In 2013/14 we had around 1,500 students studying with us for HE qualifications – everything from HNDs through to Foundation and Bachelor Degrees and on to postgraduate and professional qualifications. The College has two dedicated centres for Higher Education; St Andrews House and Norfolk House, both fantastically situated in the heart of Norwich city centre. These facilities are provided solely for the use of our Higher Education students and faculty with dedicated class, social and study spaces. We specialise in vocational – work focused – higher education. By working in partnership with local employers we have developed a range of Foundation and Honours Degrees designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to
vastly improve your prospects within your chosen career. Sixth Form – A Levels It sometimes surprises people to learn that City College Norwich is home to one of the largest sixth forms in Norfolk and that every year hundreds of young people like you choose to study for A Levels.
We will treat you like an adult and work hard with you to achieve your goals. With its own dedicated buildings on the main campus, just five minutes from Norwich city centre it’s a great place to be an A Level student!
In March 2013, Ofsted rated City College Norwich as “Good”, describing Science and Maths teaching, learning and assessment as consistently “Good” with some particular provision rated as “Outstanding” (grade 1) and Sixth Form Centre tutorial support as “Good”.
We describe our approach as an adult one. This means that we are a learning community of adults and young people where students are full members with both rights and responsibilities. You are entitled to good teaching and support and to be treated with respect. At the same time, you will be expected to do everything you can to ensure your own success.
At the Sixth Form Centre, there’s a great breadth of subject choice, expert teaching and professional individual tutorial support both for your studies and to help you move on to Higher Education or employment.

School 1 School 1 at City College Norwich caters for those who may have some learning difficulties or who have not engaged well with formal education and are “starting out” again. For many students, coming to College will be a huge step – a step from childhood to adulthood – and this will involve many changes, new freedoms and, with that, new responsibilities. It will mean students making more decisions for themselves and gaining greater independence in their learning. Progression is a fundamental aim within the school. We recognise the challenges this could present and endeavour to put in place the right level of encouragement and support. In School 1, a team of dedicated staff offer teaching, learning and support to meet the individual needs of its students. In addition, new students will find high quality resources and facilities to support them as they enter the world of adulthood, further learning and employment. These include workshop areas where they can practice art, craft, dance, drama and sport. We have an industry scale greenhouse, a shop that services the needs of the college community and
a professional kitchen in addition to well-equipped classrooms for developing functional skills in English, Maths and IT and personal and social skills. For students with profound and multiple learning difficulties we offer a discrete environment equipped with resources and materials designed for their needs, a sensory room and an independent living skills development area. College is about working hard and progressing and School 1 staff attempt to encourage and inspire all students to become valuable members of society and, potentially, the workforce. However, it is also recognised that coming to College is about making friends and developing a good social life. We have an excellent Tutorial Support team who can offer friendly guidance and advice in the area of personal and social skills. College is a great place to get to know people and to feel a part of the community of Norwich. With the support of excellent staff, School 1 offers an enjoyable and productive learning experience.

Apprenticeships are a great way to earn while you learn and an ideal alternative if you don’t want to do a full time programme but want to get into work whilst continuing your education. City College Norwich works with nearly 800 employers to provide apprenticeships, from the largest employers in the country through to small, ambitious businesses that are keen to grow. We work collaboratively with those employers to deliver training both on and off the job. In most cases your programme will involve day release delivery at the College as well as planned training and development with a mentor in the workplace.

The project to construct a scaled version of the iconic Sir Norman Foster-designed communications tower took place at the National Construction College at Bircham Newton, near Kings Lynn, as part of the Constructionarium initiative.
The exciting opportunity for the students was sponsored by Kier, who provided the materials for the construction of the tower and also an on-site manager to work alongside the students as they took on the challenge.
The challenge provided the group with invaluable insights into the whole process of seeing a project through start to finish, from the importance of sticking to the project’s critical path, to project management, team-working and problem-solving to keep on schedule.
Construction student Bobby Hughes, 18, from Watton, who took on the role of project manager for the week, said: “It gave a little taste of what it would be like to work as a project manager. I learnt that it is quite a stressful job! But I enjoyed the experience. It was good working
with the guys from Kier. They gave me different options of how to do things, but left it down to me as project manager to pick which would be most suitable.” Constructionarium links education with industry by providing “hands-on” construction experience for students and professionals, which sees participants construct scaled down versions of bridges, buildings, dams and civil engineering projects from all around the world in a practical, safe and relevant environment.

After completing his National Diploma in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) at City College Norwich, Jacob moved to London to study BA (Hons) Theatre Practice at the prestigious Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Megan’s fantastic achievements were recognised in front of an audience of 90 guests, made up of outstanding apprentices, employers who provide exceptional support for apprenticeships, assessors from the College and invited guests including Simon Wright MP. The 18 year old, who completed her Level 2 hairdressing apprenticeship at Redz hairstylists in Beccles has worked at the salon since she was 14, whilst still at school.
Salon owner, Jo Mitchell said she was thrilled that Megan had won the award: “What makes Megan stand out is her dedication. Megan is 100% dedicated to Redz, to the team, to her job and her training. We know we can completely rely on her support and loyalty. I am really proud of her. We have had lots of apprentices, but no one quite like Megan.”

During the week staff throughout the hotel, up to and including General Manager Bill Heath, took a step back to allow students to take on their jobs for 5 full days, covering everything from reception, to housekeeping, bar management, food preparation, food service and supervisory and management roles.
during the three day takeover – with some shifts beginning at 5am – to work on the customer service and information desk, at check-in and boarding. Students working on the check-in desk were given just two hours of training on their first day before checking in and boarding 186 passengers on a flight to Tenerife.
The takeover students also provided catering and front of house service for major functions including the College’s Hospitality and Catering Centenary Gala Dinner.
Since the first hotel takeover in 1998, the number of students involved has expanded to include not only hospitality and catering but also students on sports, personal fitness training, and travel and tourism courses. The annual takeover gives students a unique opportunity to experience first-hand what it is like to work in hospitality.
Meanwhile twelve travel and tourism students took over roles from staff at Norwich International Airport for the first time. Six students put in some early starts

s t n e d u t s g n i n n i Medal-wy can match show thein international the pros competition cooking Three Professional Cookery students proved they can stand the heat in the kitchen, after achieving a Gold medal for hygiene and a Bronze medal for the quality of their dishes in a competition that saw them go head to head with professional chefs in a 90-minute cook-off at the International Salon Culinaire. To be cooking on a par alongside nine professional teams was a remarkable achievement by the talented young chefs who were the only student team in the Mystery Box Grand Prix competition. The students, who are all currently on the VRQ Level 3 Professional Cookery course, were up against experienced professional chef teams from the UK and abroad. Working in teams of three, the competitors were given a mystery box and then had just 90 minutes to prepare and serve a 3-course menu.
Allowing for time to plan their menu, and to plate up at the end, the students pulled out all of the stops to produce an impressive three courses in approximately 70 minutes of cooking time. The City College Norwich team impressed the judges with their menu of baked monkfish to start, main course of roasted veal served with ham and vegetable pie, and dessert of French orange and chocolate tart, and vanilla custard pudding served with a compote of peaches and a caramel tuile for dessert.
Greg Arundell, 19, from Norwich, who was the team captain, said: “I’ve taken part in student competitions before, but this was a massive step up for us. The standard that we had to achieve was a big factor and the time was significantly cut down from anything we have done before. We had to work really fast to do three courses in 90 minutes. Just to be there, alongside international teams, was brilliant – and to come away with a Gold and a Bronze was something else.”

Public Services is an ideal full time course for those interested in a career in any of the uniformed services, for instance the Army, Navy, RAF, Prison, Fire or Police service. You will be taught mainly in a group but you will also need to be motivated to work independently on some assignments. You will investigate your own well-being, improve your own fitness and develop your problem solving skills. An important element of this course is to also improve your ability in English and Maths.

This course deepens the work related focus from the 90 Credit Level 3 Diploma. Students will spend this year studying a further nine units from a range of different subjects which could include exercise, health and lifestyles, crime and current affairs to achieve the equivalent of three A Levels in total.
Entry requirements
Students must have achieved the Diploma at Pass grade or above and at interview need to demonstrate high levels of enthusiasm and a commitment to taking responsibility for their own learning. A positive attitude and record of very good attendance is also a requirement.
Progression
The course provides a well-established route into Higher Education. Successful students could apply to progress onto the FdA in Public Services or on to relevant subjects such as criminal psychology, forensics and psychology. e v a r b s t n e d u t S w o h s o t s t n e m ele r o f y d a e r e r ’ they e c i v r e s c i l b u p Fifty two students from City College Norwich put into practice all of the skills needed for a career in the uniformed public services – combining teamwork, leadership and survival skills – during a week of outdoor challenges in the Lake District. The group’s time at the Outward Bound Trust, Ullswater, was all about facing challenges head-on and putting into practice the full range of skills developed by the 2nd year Level 3 Public Services students on their course. The challenges followed thick and fast, with the students working in teams to take on a 2-day expeditionary hike, camping out overnight, gorge walking, rafting, canoeing, climbing a 6 metre pole and other tasks designed to test their team work, resilience and initiative to the limit. Many of the students on the course have their sights set on careers in the uniformed public services – with some planning to progress directly on to the Armed Forces, Police, Fire or Ambulance
Services, and others intending to go on to Higher Education first. One of the students, Will Taylor, 19, from Bungay, said: “There was a lot of team bonding and team building during the week. Working in new groups we had to do things we hadn’t done
before, like canoeing. The way everyone acted as a team was brilliant, with people motivating and encouraging each other. The biggest challenge for me was jumping off the trapeze, as I am not good with heights, but my team encouraged and motivated me to do it.”

There are no formal entry requirements but all candidates need to have a basic understanding of how the human body functions and be experienced in the use of a gym for their own personal fitness. As this is an instructor qualification a good level of verbal communication is an advantage.
Personal Training, CYQ Diploma Level 3 This course is for students interested in becoming a personal trainer or pursuing a career within a fitness, exercise or wellbeing role. The course includes a variety of units, for example; CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training, HABC Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work, CYQ Level 2 Award in Circuit Training, CYQ Level 2 Award in Step Exercise into Music.

This course offers exciting opportunities to practice and develop a range of skills at major sports events throughout the UK with the Extreme Sports Therapy Unit. The Extreme Sports Therapy Unit provides students with a way of developing their practical sports massage skills in a real working

e r a s t h g i s s ’ l i Em s c i p m y l a r a P set on l a o g l l a footb Sixteen year old City College Norwich student Emil Roger took a big step towards his ultimate goal of representing Team GB at football in the 2016 Paralympics after being signed to play for Tottenham Hotspur’s cerebral palsy team The Level 2 Sport and Exercise Diploma student from Norwich, who can play as a striker or in central midfield, has been given a 1-year contract with Spurs’ senior cerebral palsy team after impressing during a 5-week trial. Emil immediately showed his potential to succeed at this level by scoring two goals for the team on his debut in a friendly match against QPR. Emil is also a talented wheelchair basketball player – having played for the Norwich Lowriders for the last 8 years – but now he has signed for Tottenham Hotspur his focus is firmly on progressing as a footballer. This commitment involves regular travel to London, during the week and at weekends, to train and play for the team.
With the Tottenham side containing several players who have represented England and Team GB, Emil has a fantastic opportunity to develop and hopefully progress and earn international and Paralympic selection – something he has his sights firmly set on. He said: “It was quite an achievement for me to join Tottenham, especially as I am the youngest player to have signed for the senior team. Tottenham has a leading cerebral palsy team, with lots of players looking to play for England and Great Britain in the Paralympics. I think I have shown my potential and, if I keep working hard, I feel I can make it to play at international level.”

Tuition and Registration Fees If you are under 19 on the 31st August prior to the start of your course and attending an EFA funded course, then your tuition and registration fees will normally be free. If you are over 19, you will normally be liable for fees. However, if you are studying for your first full Level 2 qualification (and you are under 24) or your first full Level 3 qualification (and you are under 24) - then your tuition and registration fees may be free. There is also a fee remission system if you are under 24 and studying at Entry Level 1 or Level 1 and you don’t already hold a full Level 2 qualification. If you are unemployed at the time of enrolment, and in receipt of certain benefits, you may be eligible for a tuition fee remission.

16-19 Bursary Fund
If you are under 19 on 31st August 2015 and on an EFA funded course – you may be eligible for support from the 16-19 Bursary Fund. The aim of the fund is to help cover some of the financial costs of coming to college. The scheme comprises of two elements: 1. General hardship fund to help towards costs such as transport, equipment, books and study trips if your parents have a household income of £21,000 or less. 2. Vulnerable Young Person’s Bursary of up to £1,200 - if you are in care, a care leaver, or receive Income Support/Universal Credit in your own right or you receive Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment and Employment Support Allowance. Support is normally paid half-termly – subject to satisfactory attendance of 85% or more. If attendance falls below 85% then payments may be cancelled. Please contact the Advice Shop for more information or an application form.
Adult Discretionary Learner Support Fund (19+) If you are 19 or over and on a SFA funded course the College has a Learner Support Fund that can provide support if you are on a low income. If you have a gross household of £21,000 or less per year, you will be eligible to apply. If you are married or living with a partner we will assess your joint income but you will be eligible to apply if it is below £25,000 p.a. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans There may be a tuition fee loan available to you if you are 24 and over and wish to study for a Level 3 or Level 4 course. The system operates in a similar way to Higher Education student loans with repayments due after the course is completed and you are earning £21,000 or over. Access students who take out a loan, progress on to a Higher Education course and successfully complete it will have their 24+ loan cancelled. You can apply online once you have received a special offer letter from the College which contains course reference numbers/ tuition fee amounts etc.
24+ Advanced Learning Loans Bursary This is a hardship fund designed to help with costs such as travel, child care and books/equipment etc if you have taken out a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan and are on a low income. If you are single and have a household income of under £21,000 p.a. you will be eligible to apply. If you are married or live with a partner you will be eligible if your income is below £25,000. Application forms for this scheme will be available from the Advice Shop or Norfolk House. Proof of eligibility for the 24+ loan and details of household income will be required. Who is eligible for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan? Individuals who are: • aged 24 or over at the start of their course • undertaking an eligible course • meet the residency criteria • resident in the UK • have not previously had a loan to do the same qualification type and level of qualification.
Travel Assistance from Norfolk County Council For Norfolk residents, this may be available if you are: • aged under 19, • studying at least 16 hours per week • live more than three miles from the College (and travel on a core route). A contribution of either £360 or £480 can be expected depending on household income. This contribution can be paid in instalments. On some routes, daily return passes of £2.10 or £2.60 will be available subject to household income. These tickets can be purchased on the bus. NB you will need to have applied to Norfolk County Council first to be eligible. For more details, please contact the Passenger Transport Unit, County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich NR1 2SG or call the Student Transport Hotline on 0344 800 8020 or visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/post16transport for further information. Suffolk students who are under 19 should contact Suffolk County Council about their discretionary travel scheme: 0845 606 6173. A contribution of £170 per term is normally expected. Discounted First Bus passes are available to all college students and staff and can be used during term and vacation periods. These can be purchased from the Cashiers Office in the Wroxham building. Free Meals With effect from September 2014, you will be eligible for free meals at college if you are aged 16-18 (or 19-25 and have a learning difficulty assessment), are studying on a further education course and you/ your parents are in receipt of: • Income Support • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) • Guaranteed Element of State Pension Credit • Child Tax Credit (not Working Tax Credit) with an annual gross income of no more than £16,190 p.a. • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
Help with Childcare Help with the cost of childcare may be available depending on your age and your household income: • If you are under 20, you can apply to the Care to Learn scheme. If you have a Statement/LDA or EHCP We will already be aware of your support needs before you come to college and will contact you to get the right kind of support to meet your needs. However, if you do not want support you can tell us at any point.
Is your difficulty dyslexia, dyscalculia or Mears Irlen? You can make an appointment with our SpLD (Specific Learning Difference) team once your course has started. You can do this at any reception or at the Advice shop on the main site. The SpLD team can assess you for exam concessions, which might give you extra time in exams or have a reader or scribe present in your exam.
Support through your tutor
Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)
If you didn’t tell us you might need support when you applied to the college, your tutor can contact us on your behalf and arrange a meeting to discuss your support needs.
The DSA is a non means-tested grant for disabled Higher Education learners. Its purpose is to pay for extra costs incurred by the learner, as a direct result of their disability, to enable them to attend and undertake their course of study. DSA’s are not paid as a set amount; this is determined by an assessment which will identify the required equipment and support and the subsequent costs. The learner’s LEA administers the DSA and confirms eligibility and learners have to apply to them. Applications for DSA can be submitted before the start or during the course. Year 11 Pupils in Norfolk If you are a year 11 pupil in a Norfolk school you would historically have applied through the ‘Help You Choose’ website as advised by your Careers Adviser at school. However, the Help You Choose application system will not be operating through 2014/15 so please apply as detailed to the left. We accept applications up until the course starts, but you can apply from 1st September. You should list all the subjects you wish to study on this form. Remember: Even if you think you have made a decision about your future, it is worth keeping your options open. It is possible to apply to more than one college or school and City College Norwich accepts enrolments right into September.

What happens next? Once you have applied, we will usually offer you an interview if appropriate and then let you know whether we can offer you a place on your chosen course. The place we offer you will be on condition that you achieve the entry qualification, but some courses may require relevant references or DBS checks. If you have met all of the required criteria, the offer will be unconditional.
Taster days Once you have been offered a place, you will need to come into the College to enrol in person. This will be during the last two weeks of August – look out for advice on this in the letters we send you. Between your interview and enrolment you may also be invited to attend our Flying Start programme. You will then be able to meet individual subject teachers and get a ‘feel’ for college life, see some of our facilities and discuss the subjects you intend to study.
International students If you have come to live in the UK from overseas and would like to study at City College Norwich, please contact the International Adviser in the Advice Shop on +44 (0) 1603 773 773, who will check your Overseas and English Language qualifications and advise you on the most suitable course. Our adviser may also be in contact with you to check your immigration status, eligibility to study and any liability for course fees. If you are living overseas at the time of application, the International Adviser will liaise with you throughout the application process and arrange a Skype interview, if required.
