Welcome to our college. Here at City College Norwich we pride ourselves on helping you to get to where you want to be, whatever your starting point, background and previous educational experience. We offer a wide range of courses that are designed to help you to progress on to the next stage in your learning, as well as giving you the skills and experiences that will really prepare you for the world of work. We have a large number of student-run enterprises which will give you opportunities to develop these skills, as well many exciting workshops, activities and challenges run through our unique StartUp Lounge. Many of our courses are designed with the active input and involvement of employers, so even whilst at college you will be developing the

skills that will help you to stand out and secure your future employment. City College Norwich is a few minutes walk from the City Centre on Ipswich Road. From the St Stephens Street roundabout (near the bus station), follow signs to Ipswich.

There is limited pay and display parking on campus, but we also offer a subsidised park and ride scheme from the County Council site on Harford roundabout (near Tesco on the A140/A47 junction).

Coming to City College Norwich represents a big step in a young person’s life. This is a time of transition from statutory schooling to further education and, in many respects, from childhood into adult life. It includes many new changes, new freedoms and, with that, new responsibilities. This will involve making more decisions for themselves and gaining greater independence in their learning.

We recognise the challenges this presents and endeavour to put in place the right level of encouragement and support. In the Foundation Learning Programme Area, a team of dedicated staff offer teaching, learning and support to meet the individual needs of its students. In addition, new students will ﬁnd high quality resources and facilities to support them as they enter the world of

adulthood, further learning and employment. These include workshop areas where they can practice art, craft, dance, drama and sport. We have an industry scale greenhouse, a shop that services the needs of the college community, a kitchen, in addition to well-equipped classrooms for developing functional skills in English, Maths and IT and personal and social skills. For students with profound and multiple learning difﬁculties we offer a discrete environment equipped with

resources and materials for the TEACCH approach to learning, a sensory room and an independent living skills development area. Foundation Learning is situated within the Norwich building on the main campus ensuring students feel a part of the wider community of the college. However, the majority of teaching and learning areas are contained within a certain area deďŹ ned as School 1 which means they can feel safe and secure within their own environment until they

feel conďŹ dent enough to venture further. College is about working hard and progressing and Foundation Learning staff attempt to encourage and inspire all students to aim to become valuable members of society and, potentially, the workforce. However, it is also recognised that coming to college is about making friends and developing a good social life. We have an excellent pastoral support team who can

offer friendly guidance and advice in the area of personal and social skills. College is a great place to get to know people and to feel a part of the community of Norwich. With the support of excellent staff I know it will be an enjoyable and productive learning experience.

Transitions. A WELCOMING TRANSITIONAL COURSE FOR ENTRY LEVEL STUDENTS

Who is it for? Young people (typically aged between 16 and 19) for whom transferring to a college course is felt to be too big an initial step.

Course outline. Offering transition for those students who need an extended period of adjustment and conﬁdence-building prior to accessing further courses within college. The course is based in the Thetford Building on the southern edge of the Ipswich Road campus, where we have a large open-plan classroom, a separate IT suite and a small teaching kitchen. Originally a Victorian house, it has been completely refurbished during summer 2012. Students are supervised on arrival and departure, during breaks and at lunch times. There are high levels of support throughout the day, which may be on a 1:1 basis or shared depending on individual need.

SPECIALIST COLLEGE PROVISION FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH COMPLEX NEEDS

Course outline. Based within the main City College Norwich campus the Access course enables students to feel safe and secure in a busy mainstream environment. Students receive high levels of support throughout their day from the moment they arrive on campus. We have sole use of our base classroom, one-to-one room, life skills bedsit and sensory room. We use the TEACCH approach, a holistic method for supporting autistic people. We have found that this works well with all our students as it provides structure, reducing anxiety and allowing ﬂexibility and change to be built in. We continuously conduct informal assessments and challenge our students by offering them new experiences and guiding them towards independence wherever possible.

DURATION Up to 2 years. Students attend up to 4 days a week from 9am to 3pm. Each student’s timetable is agreed individually from ½ day to 4 full days.

WHO IS IT FOR? Young people aged 16 – 25 who may have: • Profound and multiple learning difﬁculties • Communication difﬁculties • Autistic Spectrum Disorders • A history of behaviours that may challenge • Physical disabilities • Visual/hearing impairments

Additional information We like to identify students who will be joining us as soon as possible as we feel the best way to prepare them for college is to have an extended transition period. We offer taster sessions, transition weeks and outreach visits as appropriate and can work with potential students for up to 2 years prior to their college start.

Progressions. AN ADAPTABLE, UP TO DATE COURSE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE LEAVING COMPLEX NEEDS SCHOOLS

Who is it for? Young adults with severe learning difﬁculties and/or disabilities

Course outline. The course offers an introduction to further education and college life for students with learning difﬁculties and disabilities. The aim of the course is to build conﬁdence and encourage independent behaviour in a new learning environment. This will be achieved through a range of activities that focus on developing communication and social skills both in college and in the wider community. During the year students will be provided with opportunities to explore possibilities for progression onto other courses within the programme area. High quality teaching and support will ensure that individual interests and needs are catered for and students will be encouraged to involve themselves in decision making that will shape the design and development of the curriculum.

Pathways. THIS EXCITING MODULAR COURSE HAS BEEN DESIGNED IN RESPONSE TO STUDENT NEED AND AIMS TO DEVELOP CONFIDENCE, PERSONAL AND SOCIAL SKILLS AND EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS

Course outline. Through participation in the inspirational activities students go on a process of discovery within a community where they will be able to take the initiative, take responsibility and develop organisational skills to be prepared for further challenges. Students work towards personal and team targets in a supported environment where all contributions are valued. Students are enabled to develop their strengths in order to pursue their own interests and to meet their needs.

QUALIFICATIONS/ SUBJECTS Subject areas to include: • Arts and crafts • Community actions/ volunteering • Dance and drama • Titan travel training • Conservation work Students will work towards at least one of the following qualiﬁcations: • ASDAN award/certiﬁcate in Personal Social Development • Duke of Edinburgh’s award (Skill, Physical Recreation, Expedition and Volunteering) • Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT

PROGRESSION This course could lead on to the Enterprise provision offered within Foundation Learning. Another pathway could be into Project SEARCH. All progression will be supported and advice offered throughout.

DURATION 1 year. 3 days a week from 9am to 4pm.

SIZE OF GROUP Up to 10.

WHO IS IT FOR? Young people aged 16 to 25 who may have: • Moderate Learning Difﬁculties/Disabilities • Autistic Spectrum Disorders • Emotional Behavioural Social Difﬁculties.

General Enterprise. A PERSONALISED PROGRAMME AROUND ENTERPRISE BUT WITH A FOCUS ON INDIVIDUAL PREPARATION FOR THE FUTURE BEYOND COLLEGE

Who is it for? Mainly for individuals who have spent a year or more in college on other Foundation Learning courses but are also suitable for those are new to college and ready to progress forward into the world of work.

Course outline. The programme asks students to be involved in identifying real life skills they will need, skills they already have and opportunities and experiences they need to equip them for coping with the wider world whether that includes work or not. There is a focus on employability skills but these will be general; for example working with others, working to meet an agreed outcome and deadline, problem solving, decision making and above all communicating with others. All of these skills should be transferable to situations within the world of work. Students on the course currently take part in mini enterprises – preparing and delivering veg bags to college customers and bloom tubes (a service based in college for staff to have a small ﬂower arrangement in their ofﬁce each week).

PROGRESSION Students may progress onto one of the vocational enterprise courses within Foundation Learning.

DURATION 1 year. 3 days a week from 9am to 4pm

Appropriate levels of support will be in place but progressively we will work throughout the year to enable students to be less dependent on support to achieve realistic tasks and targets.

Enterprise. A RANGE OF COURSES DESIGNED TO ASSIST STUDENTS IN THE TRANSITION FROM COLLEGE TO EMPLOYMENT. THE AIM OF THESE COURSES IS TO GET LEARNERS JOB READY.

Course outline. There is a choice of three different course routes to follow. Go to pages 22 to 23 to ﬁnd out more.

PROGRESSION MINT – offers support through job searching and coaching to allow students with a barrier to employment to progress into the world of work. Students should have completed a workplacement prior to being referred. See pages 38 to 41 for more information.

Project SEARCH – a CCN course based at NORSE or the N&NUH. Rotations allowing students to gain real work experience and skills with the support of their colleagues. See pages 32 to 35 for more information. Other options are available and would be discussed at the parents/carers meeting whilst on the course

DURATION Up to 2 years. Three college based days per week. 1 to 2 days work placement may be organised.

SIZE OF GROUP Up to 8

Enterprise Horticulture. The programme is based around practical skills preparing individuals for employment in the horticulture vocational area.

The course aims to move students out of the classroom environment, in which they may have struggled, to give them a practical education which may lead into employment. This also helps them to appreciate their local surroundings and gives them a horticultural knowledge that they can use throughout their adult life. Over the last few years students from the

Horticulture course have been working closely with Norwich in Bloom and other members of the community to help improve the local environment. Learners grow plants at the glasshouse on the Ipswich Road campus for use in and around the city. Recent projects have included growing plants for Harry Perry Court and planting their ﬂower tower, planting the ﬂower bed at St Stephen’s church and

plantings at the Castle Mall, Castle gardens, Norwich Cathedral and the Norwich Assembly House. Students participate in all the activities that would take place in a nursery, which include; seed sowing, seedling transplanting, watering and general duties. This gives them a chance to function in a real work environment while being supported in their learning.

Additional information Students will have access to specialised Pastoral and SpLD teams at City College Norwich for diagnosis and support of a range of barriers to learning. The level of support during the year will be continually reviewed and appropriate for the student’s needs. Extra-curricular activities are often offered throughout the year.

Enterprise Hospitality. The programme is based around practical skills preparing individuals for employment in the hospitality vocational area.

Students on the course take part in setting up a food service (hot food prepared and delivered by students), a tea service (cakes and drinks prepared and delivered by students) and coffee mornings (serving customers in the

college). These events take place to develop students’ skills in areas such as communication, conﬁdence, team building and money management. The students raise money for charities and for end of year events for their group.

There are opportunities for the students to take part in running stalls and trolley services around the college and at times off site. A lot of the events are designed by the students giving them a sense of ownership of their curriculum.

Enterprise Retail. The programme is based around practical skills preparing individuals for employment in the retail vocational area.

Students on the Retail Enterprise course are responsible for the day to day running of Scribbles, the colleges’ stationery shop. Daily tasks include till work, stock replenishment and general cleaning.

Customer interaction takes place through the operation of a bi-weekly milk round – Amazing Crates – that enables students to improve their communication and customer service skills and generally boost self-esteem and conﬁdence.

Working in Scribbles, gives students the experience of a real work environment and helps them become aware of the importance of preparation and planning, organisation, money management and personal presentation.

Phoenix Purple. REGIONAL CENTRE FOR LEARNERS WITH AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Phoenix Purple is a transitional course designed especially to suit students on the Autistic Spectrum. It is for those who do not yet feel ready to access a mainstream course elsewhere within the college and require a specialist curriculum to meet their individual needs and prepare them for their next step. The course requires four days attendance. Monday, Tuesday and Friday are mandatory days and the student then has the choice of attending on either a Wednesday or Thursday. Each student’s timetable is based upon choices made from the basic Phoenix Purple timetable.

This covers a broad range of subjects such as: • Communication & Social Skills – Access to Speech and Language Therapist, Radio, Confidence and Independence Building, Individual and Group Tutorial • Life Skills – Catering, Practical Budgeting and Number skills and Travel training • Creative Subjects – Animation, Film Making, Art & Crafts, Music, Photography and Creative Writing • Optional Qualifications – Functional Skills English and Maths or BTEC/ GCSE qualifications alongside Phoenix Purple if needed as part of transition to further mainstream courses • Preparation for Life & Work – Citizenship, Study Skills, Fundraising, Enterprise, Project Teams In addition to this there is also opportunity for 1:1 teaching or support where required. Students are encouraged to be flexible and swap sessions throughout the year.

The course is designed to promote group working, decision making skills in order to develop a higher level of conﬁdence, independence and self-esteem to better prepare them for either employment or further education. The course is designed to last one year, however there is the opportunity to continue for a second year if this is required. The Rugroom. REGIONAL CENTRE FOR LEARNERS WITH AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDERS

The RUGROOM has been developed to provide a specialist facility for students on the Autistic Spectrum. Any student who has a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder is entitled to have access to the RUGROOM whilst studying at college. It is a uniquely designed space that promotes social communication and interaction. Students from Phoenix Purple and a specialist team designed the room to suit the needs of students on the Autistic Spectrum and it was opened in 2008.

THE SPACE The seating areas have all been designed to encourage and facilitate social interaction and give students the opportunity to practice their social skills. There are two ‘Pods’ which provide a calm and safe space to relax, unwind and de-stress, if life at college becomes too much and anxiety is heightened. The ‘Den’ is designed to be used as either a games room or small classroom when needed. It houses a PlayStation and Wii which can be used by students in their free time. This space is also used for Speech and Language Therapy Sessions and Person Centred Review Meetings. There is computer access in the RUGROOM and these are available to use for Off-Course Support or in students’ free time. There is a kitchen which is used by staff and students and there is access to tea and coffee making facilities, a microwave and a fridge.

THE RUGROOM AND PHOENIX PURPLE As part of the Phoenix Purple course you have access to the RUGROOM and its associated activities. There are half term social events which are organised and run by Phoenix Purple students and that all users of the RUGROOM can access. In the past we have had themed events such as: Quiz & Bingo night, Fancy Dress (Space theme), a Halloween party and an old fashioned Fun Fair evening with games and prizes. On occasions we also go out to local venues and restaurants where there is the opportunity to eat, take part in activities and socialise. These extra curricular activities are designed to enhance your experience of college and provide alternative learning opportunities. Although they are not mandatory, students opinion is that they are very enjoyable and beneﬁcial.

Staff are here to work with you to develop your skills ready to move into Further Education, Apprenticeships/Training or Paid Employment. Our curriculum is led by what you need in order to progress. You’ll learn things you need to know and do things that will beneﬁt you. Our delivery staff and job coaches play an important role in supporting you

through various provision ensuring you achieve your best and progress to where you want to be.

This could be either in a real work setting, at an employer’s premises or in various learning settings.

We want you to gain suitable qualiﬁcations, along with real experiences that will set you up for your next steps.

We have excellent links with employers and aim for all of our provision to give you opportunities to work with some of these. Having real work experience will not only give you speciﬁc skills; it will open up new opportunities that you may have not thought of before.

Within this area you have opportunities to work across college sites. Full support and travel training will be offered.

Project SEARCH Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. A COURSE WHICH PREPARES STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES AND/OR DISABILITIES FOR PAID WORK

Course outline. Project SEARCH is an employment-focussed education programme, designed to give students with learning difďŹ culties and/disabilities the opportunity to learn more about the world of work, develop employability skills and to try out real jobs within the host business at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. Project SEARCH offers a variety of work placements within the hospital including, ward catering, portering, domestic assistants and administration roles. Students undertake three different work placements during the year. We also have daily classroom sessions where the students learn employability skills, such as, interview preparation, creating a CV, customer service and job searching which will prepare them for the world of work.

Project SEARCH Norse Commercial Services. A COURSE WHICH PREPARES STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES AND/OR DISABILITIES FOR PAID WORK

Course outline. Project SEARCH is an employment-focussed education programme, designed to give students with learning difďŹ culties and/disabilities the opportunity to learn more about the world of work, develop employability skills and to try out real jobs within the host business at Norse Commercial Services. Project SEARCH offers a variety of work placements within Norse including: catering, housekeeping, fabrication, bus valeting and administration roles. Students undertake three different work placements during the year. We also have daily classroom sessions where the students learn employability skills, such as, interview preparation, creating a CV, customer service and job searching which will prepare them for the world of work.

BTEC Level 1 in Vocational Studies. THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO DEVELOP THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN A VOCATIONALLY RELATED CONTEXT.

Who is it for? Learners who are unsure what they want to next.

Course outline. You can study a range of units and use them as tasters for further study or employment options. There are two compulsory units – Self-assessment and Career Progression which will help you improve your conﬁdence and look at the skills you need to develop to improve your job prospects. We will be doing Forest school which includes conservation work and skills such as shelter building, making ﬁres to cook food and whittling. We will also be doing basic cooking and practical skills such as carpentry, sports and multi-media. The course is available at entry Level 3 and Level 1. You will also have the opportunity to improve your Maths, English and ICT skills. If you’re not sure which direction you want to go in this may be the course for you.

Course outline. This Health and Social Care course is perfect for you if you are caring or interested in working with people. The course is delivered offsite mostly at the Vauxhall Centre and Aylsham Care Trust although you will spend 1 day a week on site. You will be in 3 days a week although you may have work placements on other days. This course also provides another chance to get your English and Maths back up so you can get a better job in life. If you are keen to go onto a level 2 course in Childcare or Health and Social Care, this course is for you!

Course outline. The BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Performing Arts offers training and experience for young people who would like to explore drama further or who may wish to pursue a career in the performing arts.

This is an ideal starting point and will give you an exciting mix of practical and theoretical skills and knowledge prior to BTEC Level 2 Diplomas and the Level 3 Extended Diplomas or GCSE’s or AS/A2 programmes.

The core focus of the course is the exploration of acting, musical theatre, dance and production arts. Who is it for?

Course outline. Phoenix Plus is a course designed to move students on to their next step in well-supported and engaging surroundings. Students are supported and encouraged by a small, dedicated team of lecturers, comprehensive student support in and out of sessions, alongside an effective pastoral team. We offer ten GCSE subjects designed to meet the academic requirements of further education and delivered in a professional and mature environment. Students who have English as a second language can access this provision and take a few GCSE’s alongside ESOL.

Phoenix Plus is for students who are aged 16 to 19 from wide and varying backgrounds. Students applying to Phoenix Plus may have interrupted secondary education or have speciﬁc learning differences which have formed barriers to achieving. Other students may simply like to re-take subjects in order to improve grades or obtain extra GCSEs to be able to access further courses.

PROGRESSION Phoenix Plus students have successfully accessed A-Levels and various further education courses before accessing higher education. DURATION Phoenix Plus is a full time course, running over one academic year. A timetable consisting of ﬁve GCSEs and a tutorial will be approximately 22 hours a week over ﬁve days.

SIZE OF GROUP One of the advantages with studying on Phoenix Plus is that wherever possible group sizes are between 12 and 18. Whatever size of the group is, Phoenix Plus offers a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment for every student.

Part Time AQA GCSE English (4700). A ONE YEAR COURSE WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY UP TO FIVE GCSE’S. A GREAT WAY TO GAIN QUALIFICATIONS FOR ANY NUMBER OF FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION COURSES, OR PROGRESSION TO EMPLOYMENT.

Who is it for? This part time GCSE is a bridge for students over 19 who require a qualification to progress further in their study or career choice. Some students are unable to progress in their careers without a Level 2 qualification. The flexibility of these qualifications ensure that they can be accessed by a wide range of students. It is necessary to complete an initial assessment and complete a piece of writing. Applicants should be working towards Level 2 to secure a place on this course. Those not currently working at this level will be offered an opportunity to achieve English Functional Skills in the first instance.

Course outline. This part time course will develop conﬁdence and abilities with Functional English. It will also enable students to recognise the importance of English in their own lives and society. This qualiﬁcation may also provide a stepping stone into Higher Education.

QUALIFICATIONS/ SUBJECTS The AQA speciﬁcation for this course consists of four controlled assessments which are internally marked, a Speaking and Listening Assessment also marked internally and one end of year exam, externally marked. Students will cover a range of topics including Shakespeare, Modern Texts, Creative Writing and Poetry.

DURATION Classes are available during the day and evening to ﬁt around work and/or family. Each class is 3 hours per week for an academic year. Students will be encouraged to complete homework to support their learning but no coursework is completed at home. All controlled assessments are under exam conditions.

AQA Part Time GCSE Science (Single Subject Award).

Course outline. This part time course is intensive and demanding and will require full attendance and self-directed study. It will enable students to think about â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is Scienceâ&#x20AC;? and the importance of Science in their own lives and society.

QUALIFICATIONS/ SUBJECTS The course consists of three components: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The 12 topics are chosen to give students an understanding of science and its application in their lives and work. These include The Environment, Genes, Controlling Energy, Space and its mysteries. There is signiﬁcant practical work including self-managed and group experiments.

WHO IS IT FOR? Part time GCSE is a bridge for students over 19 who require a qualification to progress further in their study or career choice. Some students are unable to make progress in their careers without a Level 2 qualification, the flexibility of these qualifications ensure that they can be accessed by a wide range of students. Applicants should be working towards Level 2 to secure a place on this course. You will require a mature approach to study and be highly self-motivated. You will need to be prepared to write, calculate, think and join in discussions to be successful on this part time science course.

QUALIFICATIONS/ SUBJECTS Functional Skills English is available at Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. It consists of three components: Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. Dependant on the level of study the assessment may be paper based or online. Functional Skills Maths is available online at Levels 1 and 2. This qualiﬁcation is recognised by colleges, employers and some Universities will accept Functional Skills in place of GCSE’s.

Course outline. To improve English by developing your skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing.

QUALIFICATIONS/ SUBJECTS The part time ESOL courses at City College Norwich are certificated by City and Guilds to help you achieve a National qualification. The qualification has three separate components Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. You will practice these skills in a range of different life situations and topics.

PROGRESSION You will have an opportunity to progress to the next level following successful achievement of each level and evidence of excellent class attendance. Progression from one level to a higher level takes place in February and/ or September. Your teacher will support you in planning your progression.

DURATION Part time courses are available during the day at various times to ﬁt in with family and work. Courses are also available at every level in the evening. Daytime students attend two sessions per week for 18 weeks and have an opportunity to progress to the next level following successful completion of the qualiﬁcation. Evening students attend one evening per week and would progress to the next level each September.
