Our educational partners:
Welcome from the Principal As the founding Principal of the University Technical College Norfolk, it is a pleasure to introduce you to our prospectus. The goal of UTC Norfolk is simple. We will provide students with the skills and qualifications to, either, go on to university, or to take up skilled employment at 18. To achieve this, we offer a rigorous package of academic study, practical skill development and work experience. We have a particular focus on the advanced engineering and energy sectors, but we will provide a sound educational foundation for any student who has an interest in engineering, science, maths or computing careers. We will open in September 2014 and are recruiting students currently in Year 9 and Year 11 to join our first cohort in September. We own a fabulous site and a £10m construction scheme is on-track to provide us with a fantastic 21st century learning space by mid-July. In this building, we will have £1.3m of specialist engineering and scientific equipment that will provide many unique learning experiences for students. A school is, of course, much more than bricks and mortar and we have a huge team of people working
to ensure that the UTC is a success. We have the support and sponsorship of a number of significant employers, the sponsorship of the University of East Anglia and the backing of the TEN Group. You will find a wealth of information about the UTC in this prospectus, however, that is no substitute for actually getting a flavour of what UTCN can offer. Therefore, I would encourage you to attend one of our future events, building tours or presentations and come and talk to the people involved. Please check our website www.utcn.org.uk for the latest information on future events or follow us on Twitter @utcnorfolk UTCN has created a huge amount of interest from students, parents and employers and we have already had a substantial number of applications for September 2014 – and September 2015! If what you read and see excites you, then I would urge you to take action – and soon! A new and exciting future could be closer than you think.

What is University Technical College Norfolk?
Using heads, hearts and hands
Facts about UTCs
The University Technical College Norfolk (UTCN) is a new concept in education. We offer 14-19 year olds the opportunity to combine an academic and practical education to develop their work-based skills so they can access careers in engineering or energy related areas.
We want all our students to achieve at a higher level than they have achieved before. A fundamental principle of UTCN is that we do not judge students on their past performance. Students are given new opportunities and new ways of learning.
2. UTCs are being created to fill the UK skills gap – providing high quality training for technicians and engineers.
Students will learn to use their heads (academic/ thinking skills); their hands (practical/applied techniques); and use their hearts (by developing their engineering ‘instinct’).
4. Local employers are actively involved in the design and delivery of the curriculum.
UTCN offers: •R elevant contextual learning • F ocused education on sector skills shortages •A dvanced Engineering and Energy Skills •C lose working with employers •W ork experience over 4 years •Q ualifications and training valued by employers •A business working day – 8.45am to 5pm •N o homework •P rogression into employment, Further or Higher Education
4
We will enable you to study subjects you’re really interested in, whilst concurrently being taught in industry standard facilities by teachers with real practical experience.
1. UTCN is not alone! By September 2016, there will be 50 UTCs across the country.
3. UTCs are for students aged 14 to 19 and currently admit students into Year 10 and Year 12.
5. UTCs have longer school days than most secondary schools – to allow for the delivery of an academic and a technical curriculum.

The main enclosing horseshoe wall is made of handmade loa bearing brick, which mirrors those used in the adjacent City H is punctuated by a regular rhythm of windows.
St Peter Mancroft The present St Peter’s stands to the south of the provision m and was built in the mid 15th Century. The dedication of the church is to St Peter and St Paul, but it is known locally as St Mancroft. Mancroft is a corruption of the Latin for ‘great field’ ‘great open space’, recalling the positioning of the market by Normans on open farmland to the west of the Castle.
The architecture of the present church is typical of the Perpen period of English Gothic. The great east window contains the surviving collection of medieval painted glass in the city.

Where is the UTCN and how to get there
UTCN is based in Norwich – in the heart of Norfolk. It is a few minutes drive from the city centre and is easily accessible from the A47. Norwich is at the centre of a travel network which connects it to all of the towns and villages in the region. You should be able to get to the UTCN in less than 90 minutes by public transport.
Norwich
A new bus service will link the UTCN with Norwich Train Station and Norwich Bus Station. This service will be free for all students. UTCN is also very close to the Harford Park & Ride scheme (near Tesco on the A140/A47 junction). For more detailed information on how to get to UTCN from where you live and subsidised travel options across the county, please contact our Travel Plan Co-ordinator, Natalie Halsall by email at citytravel@ccn.ac.uk or by calling 01603 773 607.

Understanding Industry Every half-term, local employers will set a Technical Challenge for students. This challenge will typically last 6-8 weeks and will be based on a real problem or challenge encountered by the employer. Before the employer can set the challenge, they will explain the context of their business, the operating constraints and the prevailing economic climate. After setting the challenge, students will work collaboratively to solve the problem. They will then present their solution back to the employer.
An example Technical Challenge from Gardline At the same time, the employer will be able to explain the career opportunities that are available for young people including salary information and likely career progression opportunities. Every half-term a different sector will be showcased. After two years, UTCN students will have a real understanding of local industry and the different opportunities available to them.
Challenge: To investigate and seek solutions to the challenges associated with recruitment for development, installation and maintenance of offshore wind farms. This is an area of genuine concern for employers like Gardline, who are seeking to significantly increase the available labour market to carry out important tasks in what is for most, an unfamiliar and a potentially hostile environment. The challenge also needs to consider developers, installation contractors and health and safety specialists who all have challenging installation targets and are required to deliver services on a 24/7 – 365 days basis. Details: This 6-8 week Technical Challenge will give students in-depth knowledge of aspects such as: • t he cost of a non-operating turbine • t he importance of employee safety • t he cost of a delivery vessel colliding and damaging a turbine

Will UTCN be inspected by Ofsted?
Yes. UTCN is classed as a school by Ofsted and will receive a monitoring inspection within its first year of operation.
19
University Technical College Norfolk frequently asked questions continued... Will I have to have an interview to get a place? No. We do not interview for entry. However, you will be offered a pre-admission meeting so that we can learn a little more about your aspirations and experience. We may also ask you to take an aptitude test that will help us determine the level at which you work best. What will the hours of the UTCN be? UTCN will operate for longer hours than most schools. This is because there is so much to fit into every day! Typically, students would study from 8.45am to 5pm. A longer school day will also prepare students for the world of work. It is a longer school day than I am used to. Will there be homework as well? The longer day will incorporate opportunities for private study and this should mean that most of your work is done in school. Therefore, additional homework is unlikely. How much will it cost to attend UTCN? Nothing. All students under the age of 19 will be fully funded by the government. Will I have to pay to travel to UTCN? There will be a bus running at regular intervals from the Bus Station and Norwich Train Station to the UTCN. Travel on this bus will be free for all students. I live some distance from Norwich. How much will it cost to travel? We are working with local bus and rail companies to negotiate good value travel passes. Please contact our Travel Plan Co-ordinator for the latest information. Her contact details can be found on page 8. Will I have to buy a uniform? There may be a charge for the uniform, which we will try to make as affordable as possible. Pre-16 students will wear a smart uniform. Post-16 will need to wear smart business dress of their own choice – but within given parameters. Are there any restrictions on appearance? Yes! UTCN has an Appearance Policy which reflects the dress and appearance code of local employers. Extreme hairstyles and visible piercings will not be permitted.
20
Will my teachers be fully qualified teachers or industry specialists? The teaching staff will be made up of school teachers, instructors and people who have worked in industry. Which employers are involved? The lead employers sponsors are Gardline, Lotus, Future Marine Services and ST Racing. However, many other employers are involved – see page 6. I’ve heard that you’ve already had lots of applications. Will I get in? We have 150 places in Year 10 and 150 places in Year 12 for September 2014. We have already received a substantial number of applications, therefore, we would encourage you to apply as soon as possible. What happens if you are oversubscribed? According to our Admissions Policy, we will randomly allocate places once we reach capacity and become oversubscribed. When and how do I apply? The UTCN is accepting applications now for September 2014 entry. You can apply online or complete the Application Form at the back of this prospectus. Please apply as soon as possible. What happens after I apply? We will: • Acknowledge your application • Invite you to an application meeting • Make you an offer in writing • Invite you to attend various taster events between now and September I’m not interested for September 2014, but I might be interested in the future.
