WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL There is a world shortage of scientists, technologists, engineers, mathematicians and computer specialists. This shortage threatens the ability of many local and national employers to compete internationally. Not content with this situation, in 2012, a number of local employers came together to do something about this skills gap. Together with the TEN Group and the University of East Anglia, they set up University Technical College Norfolk. And, in September 2014, UTC Norfolk opened its doors for the first time. Just 3 years after opening, we have students who have progressed to apprenticeships with local and national employers as well as many who have taken up university places as you will see on page 4. The salary prospects for students leaving us look excellent. Our goal is simple. We will provide our students with the skills and qualifications to go to university or to take up skilled employment. To achieve this, we offer a rigorous package of academic study, practical skill development and work

We have a particular focus on engineering, but we provide a sound educational foundation to any young person who has an interest in engineering, science, maths or computing careers. We have a fabulous £10m site which contains £1.3m of specialist engineering and scientific equipment to provide many unique learning experiences for students. More importantly, we have a talented team of teachers and other professionals working to ensure that our students fulfil their potential. We also have the support of a number of significant employers, the sponsorship of the University of East Anglia and the backing of the TEN Group. You will find a wealth of information about us in this prospectus, however, that is no substitute for actually getting a flavour of what UTC Norfolk can offer. Therefore, I would encourage you to attend one of our future events, building tours or presentations and come and talk to the people involved.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF GOVERNORS Our current board of governors reflects the involvement of industry and education and we have an excellent mix of people that include senior managers from local employers, staff from the University of East Anglia, parents of children at UTCN and colleagues from UTCN.
Welcome to UTCN where I am genuinely privileged to be Chair of Governors. I have been involved in UTCN from its conception back in 2012 when a small group of colleagues from industry and education realised that Norfolk desperately needed highly qualified and professional engineers. We succeeded in securing funding for a UTC in Norfolk to specialise in engineering and we are delighted with what has been achieved since its opening in September 2014.
Governors have a key role in guiding the strategic direction of UTCN - for which our experience makes us well placed. However, our governors do much more than this. They enjoy visiting UTCN and can be found in assembly, giving industrial insight into projects or even observing some teaching. GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE & GCSE ENGLISH LITERATURE What can I expect in lessons?
Examining Body: AQA
You will also learn how to write precisely, accurately and effectively, for both fiction and non-fiction purposes.
Content Summary: You will work towards two GCSEs in your English course: GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. We follow the AQA syllabus in both courses. You will learn to analyse both fiction and non-fiction from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and you will read a variety of texts including Shakespeare, a modern play, a nineteenth century novel and poetry.
Our set texts are:

The spoken language study element of the course will help you to develop your confidence in presenting to a group and speaking formally on a topic of your choice. The course is assessed through examinations only at the end of Year 11.
GCSE MATHS Examining Body: Edexcel Content Summary: Students will follow the new linear Edexcel GCSE (9–1) Mathematics course which will be assessed through three equally-weighted written examination papers at either Foundation tier or Higher tier. Paper 1 is the only non-calculator paper. Each of the three examination papers at both tiers will be out of 80 marks with a duration of 1 hour 30 minutes. A new grading structure is from grade 9 to 1. Questions are targeted at grades 5–1 at Foundation tier and at grades 9–4 at Higher tier and the overlapping grades across the two tiers are grades 4 and 5.

What can I expect in lessons? GCSE CHEMISTRY Examining Body: AQA Content Summary: Chemistry is everywhere! Without Chemistry nothing else would be possible, just by reading this and thinking about it, chemistry is happening in your brain. Whilst studying GCSE Chemistry you will learn about the 100 different types of matter that make up the world around us, which chemists call the elements. We will learn about the discovery of the elements and which ones are reactive and those which are inert. We will study the relationships that exist between these elements and how they fit together, beginning your journey to truly understanding the world around us.

What can I expect in lessons? Chemistry lessons are varied, you can be learning complicated theories of how chemicals come together and react and then trying it for yourself in practicals. You will learn the skills needed to interact with the molecular world including, but not limited to measuring mass, volumes and temperatures. You will need to work hard both in lessons and outside because chemistry is a very demanding subject, but ultimately extremely rewarding.
GCSE PHYSICS Examining Body: Edexcel Content Summary: At UTCN we follow the Edexcel GCSE Sciences course. Physics looks into how things work and how the Universe works in harmony using laws and theory from great minds such as Newton and Einstein. It builds up an understanding from the smallest of the small such as quarks and other fundamental particles to galaxies, unfathomably large distances away. At UTCN you will be studying Physics as part of double award science (along with Chemistry or Biology). For those students with higher target grades, you will take Physics as a separate GCSE.
The GCSE Physics course explores: • The Universe
• Electricity • Waves and Energy • Radioactive and electromagnetic radiation • Forces and Motion • Medical Physics Physics as a separate GCSE looks more at the application of Physics.
What can I expect in lessons? At UTCN we try to include practical work as often as possible to aid learning. You will be expected to work hard both in class and on homework. The exams that you take will have short answer questions and longer, more open answer questions. If you want to go on to study Physics at A-Level, it is an advantage to have taken the separate award in Physics course. It is also important to have a solid understanding of maths at GCSE.

GCSE COMPUTER SCIENCE Examining Body: OCR Content Summary: • Computer Systems • Computational Thinking, Algorithms and Programming • Programming Project This subject gives pupils a real, in-depth understanding of the functionality of computer technology and provides a general grounding in computing, the principles of programming and problem-solving. Computer Science is a practical subject where students can apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real world systems. It’s an intensely creative subject that combines invention and excitement, that can look at the natural world through a digital prism. The qualification can be tailored to the needs of the pupil and it will have an

open-source ethos allowing them to use any programming language (e.g. VB.Net, Python, and Java) that meets the needs of the course.
What can I expect in lessons? Our Computer Science qualification will value computational thinking, helping students to develop the skills to solve problems, design systems and understand the power and limits of human and machine intelligence. It will also be the best preparation for students who want to go on to study Computer Science at a higher level and will also provide a good grounding for other subject areas that require computational thinking and analytical skills.
BTEC FIRST AWARD IN ENGINEERING Examining Body: Pearson Content Summary: This qualification is equivalent to one GCSE, and enables students in Year 10 to take their first steps into the world of engineering. The course provides an exciting and dynamic mix of theoretical and practical study designed to give students access to the progression pathways into further engineering studies at post 16. The UTCN teaching on this course is designed to open the student’s eyes to the huge range of fulfilling careers available in engineering and manufacturing industries, as well as introduce some of the essential skills that underpin them.

What can I expect in lessons? In the classroom you will explore the vast range of processes and operations engineers use to create the world around us. PSHE
CORE PE
All students participate in the UTCN PSHE programme. This programme aims to prepare young people for modern life, looking at topics such as democracy, health and personal finance.
All students follow a Core PE Programme. This ensures that all students develop their personal health and fitness. There are limited on-site facilities at UTCN – therefore most of these activities are run off-site at specialist providers. 13
GCSE ART (OPTION) Examining Body: AQA Content Summary: GCSE Art at UTCN offers you the opportunity to use your imagination and to be creative in a variety of visual areas. Art GCSE offers you a suitable foundation from which you can move on to further and higher education. The delivery of Art has been carefully planned to include a wide range of skills and techniques including drawing, painting, collage, mixed-media, photography, print-making, model-making, and contextual studies. Drawing from observation is an important element of the course and will help to develop your spacial awareness, visual perception and judgement.

GCSE BIOLOGY (OPTION) Examining Body: AQA Content Summary: GCSE Biology is the study of living organisms; their physiology, life-cycles and adaptations. We cover a wide range applications such as cardiovascular disease, human digestion, human evolution, inheritance, infectious disease, ecology and many others relevant to you. We investigate how cutting edge technology is being used in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases. Finally, Confucius’s once said, “When you breathe, you inspire, and when you do not breathe, you expire.”
What can I expect in lessons? GCSE Biology is the practical application of all of the other Science disciplines. Hence in most lessons expect to practically investigate a problem for yourself. Expect your teacher to have very high expectations of your learning and progress in class. Expect to have detailed feedback on how to improve. Expect to have homework each week. Expect to have your misconceptions challenged. Finally, expect to fully participate in class discussions, and ask for clarification if you are unsure with a topic or concept that has been covered.

GCSE BUSINESS (OPTION) Examining Body: AQA Content Summary: The course covers six units each assessed at the end of Year 11 through two examinations, worth 50% each. Subject content includes business in the real world, influences on business, business operations, human resources, marketing and finance. There is no controlled assessment with this course.
What can I expect in lessons? Lessons will be business led. Each topic will include real business examples from small startup businesses to multinational companies. You will learn about becoming an entrepreneur to developing marketing strategies and understanding financial data.

You will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of different types of businesses from manufacturing, retail and technological industries. Lessons regularly include videos, documentaries, group work and the opportunity to research businesses that interest you. This is an opportunity to understand how businesses really work. The course links well with other subjects available here at UTCN.
GCSE GEOGRAPHY (OPTION) Examining Body: AQA Content Summary: This is a new course, which has been developed to be exciting and relevant. The issues it deals with are the most important challenges facing the world today. It will give you an awareness of these, how they affect people and the environment, and what can be done to overcome them. The course follows a linear pattern, which means you will take all your exams at the end of the course. There will be a mix of physical and human geography, as well as a variety of geographical applications and skills, including fieldwork.

What can I expect in lessons? Geography is a dynamic subject, so you can expect to complete a variety of work, relevant to the world around you. You will study a combination of both Physical and Human topics, as well as undertaking fieldwork and skills based tasks.

GCSE HISTORY (OPTION) Examining Body: Edexcel Content Summary: History is both an interesting and relevant subject to study. You may well ask ‘What use is History to me? Why do I need to know what happened in the past? But History is much more than just what happened, it teaches a range of valuable, transferable skills. Such skills are highly regarded by employers since they show that you can retain, analyse and present information effectively. In short, it shows a trained mind. Studying History also provides an understanding of politics, sociology and economics and provides the background to current events. In fact, choosing History will be useful throughout your life. It may

also help you to impress your families and friends with your knowledge in quizzes!
The course covers a variety of historical topics including: • Medicine through time c1250present • Anglo-Saxon and Norman England c1060-1088 • The American West c1835-1895 • Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918-39
What can I expect in lessons? In lessons you will have to opportunity to discover the events and personalities which have shaped our history over the centuries. There will also be opportunities to visit a number of historical sites in Britain and beyond.
PRACTICAL ENGINEERING SKILLS (OPTION) Examining Body: City and Guilds Content Summary: Designed for those students looking for a practical engineering experience, this course will allow learners to practise and develop a wide range of essential workshop skills. This course is a fantastic foundation for students moving onto a post 16 vocational qualification or apprenticeship in a workshop based environment.
Here are just some of the skills you will have a chance to develop during this course: • MIG Welding • Manual Milling • Manual Turning • Fabrication and Bench fitting
What can I expect in lessons? You will receive constant support from the engineering teaching staff and technicians in our fully equipped workshops, getting hands on engineering experience in order to develop the skills above. We also use cutting edge technology to allow students to develop their skills, one example is our use of a virtual welding system designed to get you up to a set standard before trying out the real thing. *Please note that this course does not lead to the award of a GCSE equivalent qualification.

GCSE SPANISH (OPTION) Examining Body: AQA Content Summary: For those students who wish to continue their study of Spanish, this course will help you to master the basics of this important world language! What can I expect in lessons? You will develop your written and spoken skills and learn more about Spanish culture. We hope to run a trip to Spain at some point during the course.

BTEC SPORT (OPTION) Examining Body: Edexcel Content Summary: BTEC Sport consists of both practical and theory elements. The theory aspect of the course is weighted at 60% of the final grade and covers a number of topics including; anatomy and physiology, biomechanics and healthy active lifestyle.
Students will also have to analyse both their own and others’ performance suggesting coaching points and ways to improve technique. As part of the private study programme for BTEC Sport, students will be required to participate in out of school activities to develop their personal performance.
The practical side of the course is assessed through the individuals’ personal performance in 3 sporting activities where they will be required to perform isolated skills, conditioned games and competitive matches. They are also assessed on their ability to devise and carry out a personal exercise programme (PEP) over a 6 week period. This section of the course is weighted at 40% of the final grade.

RAF AIR CADETS DUKE OF EDINBURGH UTCN offers students in Year 10 the opportunity to undertake the Silver Award level which consists of the following sections: • Volunteering – to encourage service
to individuals and to the community,
• Expedition – to encourage a spirit of
adventure and discovery, • Skills – to encourage the development of personal interests, hobbies and social and practical skills, • Physical Recreation – to encourage participation and improvement in physical activity.

Expeditions are organised by UTCN each year and students attend regular training sessions at school in order to complete the Expedition Section. The remaining sections are completed by students in their own time. UTCN staff support students as they progress through the award, however a large amount of responsibility lies with the student. It is not necessary to have participated in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme previously as students can begin the Silver Award level as a direct entrant. The Silver Award can be completed in as little as 12 months. After completion of the Silver Award level, students are able to progress to
Subject to final approval, we anticipate running a RAF Air Cadets section at UTCN from September 2018. Cadets offers young people the opportunity to learn new skills and gain some unique experiences. Participants will be expected to attend a weekly Parade Night (an after-school session) and take part in off-site activities at weekends and in holiday periods. Joining Cadets will, of course, be extremely valuable for those contemplating a career in aviation or the Services, however, there is no obligation on any participant to take this interest forward into a career.

FMS bring over 25 years of maritime, engineering and logistics knowledge to UTC Norfolk. Led by Yvonne Mason, FMS and their partner company, SafeSTS, are passionately committed to promoting the maritime industry and to providing skilled careers to the young people of Norfolk.

Based at Norwich Airport and employing 400 staff, KLM UK Engineering perform maintenance checks and repairs on a wide variety of aircraft including the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737.

TRAVELLING TO UTCN UTCN Contract Bus The UTCN bus pass is available to any student travelling into the city on any service other than First Buses. This also includes students who live in the city centre or are dropped off/collected in the city centre by a parent/carer. UTCN bus passes cost £65 per term, payable up front, and are issued at the beginning of each term.
Travelling to UTCN on any other service If you are travelling into Norwich City Centre using any of the following services you need to purchase a UTCN contract bus pass for the journey between the city centre/rail station and UTCN.
Travelling to UTCN on a First Bus

Within Norwich Zones 1 - 5 If you are travelling to UTCN from within Norwich Zones 1 – 5 (check on the First Bus website which zone you are in) the most cost effective options are: • Norwich FirstTrio pass - £335 – valid for three terms • Norwich FirstSolo pass - £120 – valid for one term
Outside of Norwich Zone 5 If you are travelling to UTCN from outside of Norwich Zone 5 the most cost effective options are: • Network FirstTrio pass - £530 – valid for three terms • Network FirstSolo pass - £190 – valid for one term
All these passes can be used during the weekends and holidays. Tickets can be purchased online, as a mobile “M” ticket or from the First Travel shop on Castle Meadow. As well as covering the journey into Norwich these passes can also be used on the UTCN contract bus.

Travelling to UTCN by car Please be aware that there is no student car parking available at UTCN. This is part of the building’s planning consent and not something that we have control over. Cars are not to be parked in our neighbour’s car parks or left on the road. Norwich City Council have informed us that they will issue parking fines to cars around UTCN that are parked illegally. Car parking facilities are available at the Harford Park and Ride, you can find out more information about this on the Norfolk County Council Park and Ride website.
Travelling to UTCN by bicycle If you want to travel to UTCN by push bike there are covered cycle racks available at school. We recommend that you ensure your bike is in good working order and you wear a cycle helmet for your journey. Please provide your own bike lock. Bikes are parked at UTCN at your own risk.
Travelling to UTCN by moped or motorbike If you want to travel to UTCN by moped or motorbike there is specific parking available at school. Please ensure that your bike or moped is in good working order and you have the correct safety-wear for your journey. Please provide your own bike lock. Mopeds and motorbikes are parked at UTCN at your own risk.

YEAR 10 UNIFORM UTCN uniform promotes high standards of personal presentation and health and safety. Our uniform has been developed with our Governing Body of employers to prepare students for the world of work. All specialist items are available from V&J Knitwear, a local work wear provider.
