NOTE TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS: The Addition the Fun Way program is based upon the principles used in the Times Tables the Fun Way system . Students are able to memorize the facts more effectively with the aid of visualization and mnemonics to provide concrete clues for memory retrieval. Many parents and teachers have requested an addition program similar to Times Tables the Fun Way. After several years of development, we are proud to present this picture and story method of learning addition. In order to simplify the program for the younger children, each number character in Addition the Fun Way is the same throughout the book. For instance, 3 is a bee, 4 is a door, the 5 drives, and the 6 is sick. Once students have the characters learned, they are able to remember the story in which these two characters interact and thus the answer is remembered. The picture and story method of memorizing numerical facts was tested in a study involving 756 students, 18 schools, and 36 teachers. Each school was assigned an experimental third grade class in which students learned the multiplication facts with the aid of the Times Tables the Fun Way pictures and stories. At the same time, the control class learned the facts conventionally with repetition and timed tests. The pre-test scores of both groups were not significantly different, however, the post-test scores were as much as 24% higher in the picture and story group. Also noteworthy was the degree of change or improvement from pre-test to post-test score. Results showed up to 59% more improvement with the Times Tables the Fun Way program. This widely scoped Utah study involved 11 counties, parochial and public schools, as well as resource and advanced learning programs. "The positive effect was consistent across schools. In other words, the Times Tables the Fun Way group showed superior performance over conventional methods, regardless of which school a student attended."1 We hope that you and your students will enjoy Addition the Fun Way. Keep in mind that students compare themselves to their peers and measure their own intelligence by their performances. You will be giving your students a head start and the confidence they'll need to excel in math by teaching them Addition The Fun Way. 1

HOW TO TEACH THE STORIES BEFORE GETTING STARTED: GIVE THE PRE-TEST ON PAGE 92 1. Stimulate interest in the story by discussing the story line before it is read. Ask students questions that are pertinent to the story. When the story is finally introduced, students will be more likely to remember the story because it will fit into something that they have discussed and experienced. 2. Tell the story to the students while they look at the picture in the text. Or, if working one-on-one, read the story together and then spend some time talking about the picture. This reinforces the story-number connection. Be as imaginative and creative as you can while telling the story. There is always room to add more details. Kids love stories and will often be very attentive during this part of the learning process. 3. Ask a student to read the story out loud in the text. The rest of the class can read along. Ask another student to read the caption located underneath the picture. 4. Write the fact on the board or a piece of paper and remind the students to look at the numbers of the fact and remember the story. Point out the similarities. For example: "Don’t these two bees look like 3's? And remember when you see two 3's think of the two 3-bees that stung the 6 and made him sick. (3 + 3 = 6) 5. Ask the students to tell the story in their own words. (If done in the following lesson, this exercise will serve as a review.) 6. Use additional learning activities: a. Students make their own flash cards. b. Students make their own book with the story illustrations and the facts. c. Play games with the Addition the Fun Way Flash Cards. Students can compete against themselves by trying to better their previous times with a small group of flash cards (about10). Or, you can divide kids into groups and have relay races with the flash card sets. 7. Read one story per day if working one-on-one. Bed-time is preferable because kids will have the night's sleep to allow the story to gel in long term memory. The following morning , ask your student to tell you the story for the fact. For instance, "Do you remember that story for 6 + 6? What was it?" The student then tells the story in his/her own words.

CHECK IT OUT: ADDITION
Did you know that you probably already know how to add? If you can count, then you can add. Think about swimming in a pool big enough for 10 kids. You are swimming with your 5 cousins and 4 of your friends come over to play. They want to join you in the pool. Will there be room? To find out, you just have to add your 4 friends to your 5 cousins and see how many kids there are all together. You add them 6
by counting. Start with the 5 cousins and then count your four friends.
7
Counting always works to add things up. Some people count on their fingers like this:
But if you are busy writing and have a pencil in your hand, it is really hard to count on your fingers.
8
That's why it's better to just learn the answers to the addition facts. It's a lot easier and quicker if you just know that 4 + 5 = 9. Knowing the addition facts is just a speedy way of counting. This book has some pictures and stories to help you learn the addition facts. After you read this book and learn the stories and the characters, you will be very smart in math. It will help you in school right now and all the way through high school and college and the rest of your life. 9
So, now do you understand why adding is so important? The thing to remember is to be sure to have a good time while you are learning the addition facts. That way you will be learning ADDITION THE FUN WAY! That is always the best way to learn. Math can be lots of fun.

Presenting..
The NUMBER PEOPLE
11
THE ADDITION THE FUN WAY NUMBER PEOPLE Now you will meet the number people. These guys are in all the stories. The number people are people or things that look like numbers. If you can learn their names now, you will already know them when you meet them again in the stories. Every fact uses the same number people so, once you know the number people, you will see them again and again, just like your friends on the playground. 12
The first number person is a girl called the 3-bee. The 3-bee is usually a happy bee but she can get mad when kids throw rocks at her hive or people mess with her flowers. She looks like this:
Whenever you see a 3, think of the 3-bee. 13
The next number person is the 4-door. The 4-door can be at the park's snack bar, at someone's house, or at the farmer's barn. The 4-door isn't really a person, but a lot of people go through the 4-door, or sometimes they smash into it. Meet the 4-door:
Whenever you see a 4, think of the 4-door. 14
Now you'll get to meet the 5 who drives. 5 drives everywhere. Sometimes she goes over bridges, or delivers things to and from the park. Meet the 5 who drives:
Whenever you see a 5, think of the 5 who drives. 15
The next number person is the sick-6. Poor 6 is almost always sick. Maybe it's because 6 doesn't get enough exercise or eat the right kinds of foods. Anyway, here is what the sick-6 looks like:
Whenever you see a 6, think of the sick-6. 16
The next number thing is the 7th Street Park. A lot of exciting things happen at the 7th Street Park. There is a party for the 4th of July and a flower show. Check out the 7th Street Park:
Whenever you see a 7, think of the 7th Street Park. 17
Now you can meet the 8-gate. The 8-gate is sometimes at the end of a bridge or at the opening to a garden. The 8-gate is very pretty. Here is the 8-gate:
Whenever you see an 8, think of the 8-gate. 18
Now you know the main characters. But there are still a few more that you'll be meeting. They look like this:
19
And as for 15 and 16, you'll just have to meet them when you get to their stories. OK? Can you remember who the 3 person looks like? Right! It's the 3-bee. How about the 4? Yes, that's the 4-door. And the 5? You know the 5-drives. Then there's the 6. What is wrong with 6? Right! The 6 is sick. And what does the 7 stand for? That's the 7th Street Park You'll be walking through the 8, why is that? Great! It's because the 8 is a gate.

CHAPTER ONE Presenting..
"Zero and The ONES"
21
First let's start with adding zero. When you add zero to a number, you add nothing. So 7 + 0 = 7 and 4 + 0 = 4. What is 35 + 0? Right! It's 35. How about adding one to a number? That's easy, too. Imagine this: you are picking up apples and putting them in your basket. You have 4 apples and one more falls off the tree. You put the apple in your basket. How many do you have now?
22
Adding one to a number is like going up steps. Each time you climb up a step you are adding one more. If you are on step #7 and you go up one more, you will be on step #8, so 7 + 1 = 8.

Ones are easy to add! Did you notice that you can mix up the numbers that you are adding and the answer is still the same? 1+5 is the same as 5+1. The answer is always 6. 24
CHAPTER TWO Presenting..
"The TWOS"
25
Adding two to a number is almost as easy as adding one. Lots of things come in twos. Another name for two is a pair. You can have a pair of people, a pair of socks, or a pair of snakes. When you add two, think about going up steps. But pretend you are in a big hurry and you take two steps at a time.
Practice adding two by counting the things on the next page. 26
Twos are easy too! 27
If you wanted to add 2 + 7, there is an easy way to find the answer. Just start with the 7 and count up two times. Think 7, then count twice..8..9. The answer is 9. Let's try 2 + 9. Think 9, then count twice...10..11. The answer to 2 + 9 is 11. Try these for extra practice: What is
2 + 1? 2 + 5? 2 + 9? 2 + 3? 2 + 8? Do you know all the answers? You're getting smarter every minute. 28
CHAPTER THREE Presenting..
"The THREES"
29
3 + 3 = 6 It was a pretty spring day. The birds were singing and the flowers were blooming. 6 decided to go for a walk in the meadow. While he was taking his hike he came across a huge flower. It was bigger than any flower he had ever seen. He started to pick the flower but there were 2 bees inside. When the flower shook, the bees got mad. They stung the 6 right on his nose. He ran all the way home and became very sick from the 2 bee stings. 30

3 + 4 = 7 Jeff woke up very hungry one morning. He decided to cook a big delicious breakfast. He had three frying pans going at once and pretty soon the kitchen was full of smoke from all the cooking. He opened the 4-door to let some fresh air inside. Just then, a little lost 3-bee flew in the kitchen. Jeff felt sorry for the little gal so he put the bee in a glass jar. He walked over to the 7th Street Park and set the bee free. The bee was so happy to be home. She flew right over to her hive in the big cottonwood tree. 32

Remember: When it's 3 + 4, the 3-bee flies in the 4-door and Jeff takes her home to the 7th Street Park. 33
3 + 5 = 8 5 loved to eat honey and bread, but her honey jar was empty. 5 decided to go to the honey farm to buy some more. 5 drove and drove until she was sure she was lost. She pulled over to the side of the road to look at the map. The map showed that the farm was by the 8-gate. Just then a bee from the farm flew by. "Hey 3-bee, can you show me the way?" 5 asked. "Sure," said the 3-bee. 5 followed 3-bee while she flew very fast. Soon they were at the 8-gate. 5 was happy she made it to the honey farm. 34

3 + 6 = 9 6 was feeling sick so he tried to take a nap on the hill. The 3-bee flew over and landed on sick-6's knee. 3-bee said, "Oh poor sick6, is there anything I can get for you?" "Yes," said the sick-6, "the sun is so hot and everyone keeps talking to me, I just need some rest. Please get me a sign to use for shade that says: Do Not Disturb." The 3-bee said, "OK," and flew away. 3-bee painted a sign and came back in a few minutes. The 9-sign worked perfectly. Sick-6 finally had a good nap in the shade. 36
