Celebrity WatchUgly Start to 2010? In this new decade of paparazzi glitz, the line between what’s really good and what’s really bad concerning fashion has been made a thin blurry haze, and those that cross too far on the bad side may need a good few years to recover. In this issue we take time to review some celebrities that may need to be rescued by the fashion police before they end up committing the crime of the decade…

Mischa Barton’s Uniform ?

The former OC star, Mischa Barton , was spotted in New York a few days ago coming out of Starbucks wearing the outfit on the left. Now the fact that she has struggled in the past to curve a strong style identity does not help for her recent sightings. Her love for tight fitting pants do not work to her advantage when set against the overly emphasized tops and with all of that to boot, the shoes are just not working at all. Mischa tends to favor black pants and outfits which may be used to give a slimmer appearance to her thighs. This being the situation, we definitely feel she should go for some colorful pumps to create a balanced effect.

Leighton Meester Goes Against The Grain ?

Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester is prepared for the new decade. Here she is seen at a New Years performance at the Underground in Chicago. Not a way to start the New Year. Now if the top had been a pair of stockings, and the top had been something a bit more bodacious she would have been in luck. But alas we all do things for which we need to make New Year resolutions.

Miley Cyrus, Webbed and Wild ? The 17-year-old Hannah Montana star has been criticized for dressing too old for her age. At one gala event she ended up looking like a teenager attempting to impersonate a 46-year old desperate housewife, and then at other outings she just dresses so inappropriately that her adoring brood of preteen fans would need parental consent just to dress like her! When the paparazzi lens caught Miley the other day at the 2010 Grammy Awards all that changed. Having paired her gorgeous navy blue Herve Leger dress with a Judith Leiber bag and jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira Schwartz, she completed her outfit with a pair of shoes by Balenciaga! A quick note to Miley’s entourage: please tell her to leave the ripped stockings look for troubled teens in the 80’s. Her old outfits tend to have a tryst of trying too hard and we believe the it’s time for Hannah to grow up...

Hayley William’s Bow Explosion ? Paramore’s lead singer Hayley Williams paraded the People’s Choice Awards red carpet recently wearing this very individualistic black puffy dress. She may have had too much of the Christmas gift-giving spirit still alive in her, even after holidays. Her dress had enough bows to adorn gifts for an Oprah audience! This style sure is whimsical and cute, but borders on the “strange”. The dress (not sold online) was specially designed by Chelsea Rebelle and also comes in white. It is part of the designer’s Spring 2010 collection. As for the shoes, the velvety texture with the studs is similar to likes which one would find at Desire Clothing( desireclothing.co.uk). The Future of

URBAN SHOES Anything Nike – Nike is still pioneering the sneaker game. With last years Kanye’s it seems that Nike is on the tip of every pop or cultural icon. Of course it does not hurt to release every color way imaginable. If January’s Sneaker Con in New York was anything, it could be considered the Nike event of early 2010.

1

2

Supra – One to watch for the future. These guys have learned the art of collaboration and making an edition special (in other words they put their heart into their work literally). Instead of just releasing a design, they focus on making sure that there is a strong coordinated effort to reach an intended audience. Something most in the game have lost perspective of.

The Custom Graffiti Shoe – Although existing in NY for many years, we predict an increase in graph shoes. With the success of NikeID where customers can customize their shoes online before ordering and RYZ.com where customers submit design ideas and submitted designs are chosen using a voting method, there is a strong future in customizing footwear. A perfect example of this hitting the mainstream is Keiji Ando and his subway ad on youtube. Look for some daring entrepreneur to open a retail chain of stores in the inner-city.

Fresher than a 1980’s break dancer coming out of the shower, the future of urban kicks lies in those who remain true to the sneaker game. Below are 6 brands that we consider to be the “future”....

Royal Elastics – Perhaps one of the most under-ranked brands in the game. This company has done everything right by focusing on streamlined styles and carving their own niche. Unlike some brands which try to duplicate everything that moves, Royale is not swayed by current or would be trends.

6

Box Fresh – The introduction of the UK invasion. With internet sales for footwear going through the roof and the ever growing desire of Torontonians to be trendy, it is our prediction that we will begin to see a surge in Torontonians sporting European footwear. Because of VAT tax and other factors, the buyers will chose items that are close in price range and offer a diversion from the normal North American sneaker; hence Box Fresh. Although this company has been around for some time causing much storm in the UK, we believe that 2010 will be the year of a true UK invasion.

AndroidHomme – The Jetsons have entered the Building. If you have not heard of these shoes, don’t worry you will. There is something about the French contingent that there government requires representation amongst the North American BBoy. From the early 90’s when Le Coq Sportif rivaled Troop, so must these shoes make there way into North American society. Be on the lookout for more rap artists to start to show these shoes in their video.

RUNNING:

THE NIKE CONSPIRACY

T

o anyone into fitness, sports and a general healthy lifestyle, running has always been the most basic form of warm up and cardio. And with a growing number of fitness conscious individuals, running, even, has evolved to a main event. The organization of marathons for advocacies, product promotions and several causes have become a trend in today’s modern lifestyle. But with an unbelievable statistic of 8 injured runners out of 10 a year, running has become a dangerous form of exercise – a danger unknown to many runners.

With his newfound curiosity for the secret of the Tarahumara Indians’ wisdom in running, McDougall prepares towards the Copper Canyons – a distant and isolated region of the Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico which the tribe inhabits. He attempts to uncover what makes the Raramuri, another name for the Tarahumara Indians which translates as the Running People, become good distant runners, if not the best in the world.

With the presence of other body parts like the Achilles tendon – a ligament absent in other primates and short toes, it is even anatomically apparent that humans have indeed adapted to running. Even our two legs show that even if we are not as efficient as animals when it comes to sprints, man is still superior in running long distances.

The Vibram Five-Finger Running Model

Popular amongst the barefoot enthusiasts...

In essence, McDougall’s book Born to Run talks about something beyond barefoot running or evolution or the disadvantages of running shoes. It is not some health book which merely sites statistics and medical discoveries. Born to Run is beyond that. What Born to Run talks about, is the joy one experiences when one runs. It’s about the sensations of running past sceneries and breathing fresh air, going beyond keeping fit and getting muscles toned. It’s about discovering something new about something you love, about an epic of two cultures accepting each other and discovering new philosophies in life and lifestyle.

The theory also explains why young men tend to be faster than women and older individuals, but come ultra marathons— marathons that last 30 to 100 miles long, women and older runners are able to catch up, leveling the playing field. According to studies, since humans in prehistoric times hunted in packs, groups had to sustain a constant pace over long distances to keep the group together giving all people the same ability to run in long distances.

“The answer was quite surprising and

from the University of Utah, and Daniel Lieberman, a biological anthropologist from Harvard University, a number of interesting evidence proves and supports McDougall’s findings and arguments. The theory is called the Running Man Hypothesis.

According to McDougall, with running shoes, the feet are fleeced. Because the heels are raised, people tend to run with a higher impact and longer strides, striking the heel first and cushioning the soles to make the strike less painful as the shoes absorb most of the shock. This doesn’t mean According to the study, a manifestation of humans being that the impact is less damaging though. The new store located in the Shops at Don Mills is a small sign that shoppers want more of this refined culture. One of the key new features to look for this season is the Rachel Roy collection.

ROCKUR HIGH HEEL PLATFORM

The famous New York designer finally opens a store within the GTA region, and we applause. The fact that this store is in Square One Shopping Center (Mississauga) gives many shoppers a reason to travel westward. Those familiar with the designer and his personal drama (from having started the company with $1100 dollars in his pocket to some of his current legal troubles) know that this revamping of his stores is part of his personal pledge to “better” the company. What no individual should be without are a pair of this designers’ shoes which are an epitaph to his ability to overcome the odds..

ADIDAS JEREMY SCOTT WINGS

SOLESTOP.COM PACIFIC MALL (MARKHAM) Mens & Womens Athletic Shoes One of the hidden gems of Toronto, this store is poised to make great impact. In a city where people either sell fake Jordans, or low end sneakers in mass quantity, this store makes it a point to focus on deadstock and hard to find rarities as well as offering customers a chance to check out the kicks online while procuring the items through local pickup. Look for more stores to follow this pattern in the near future.

Being one of the few stores in Toronto in which one can pick up a pair of Stuart Weitzman or Donald J Pliner shoes, it could be said that people who know their shoes know The Petit Shop. Look for more of these stores in rural areas of the GTA to meet the demand of conscious customers.

Undoubtedly, French

women and their boots share a unique “bond”. Simply look at the detail of the black mesh overlay surrounding this boot and it is not hard to conceive the thought of a Parisian boutique with a petite figure in a stylish matching belt! Another feature shared by the French is the harnessing of style to match the seasonal weather. Rainy weather does not seem to compromise French style but rather complements it. Par Example; when in France, while enjoying a cafe au lait by the window within the confines of a sidewalk cafe in Paris, it is not uncommon to see a young patron keeping herself warm with a very expensive or elegant pair of rain boots which take advantage of the weather.

your feet twenty four hours a day.

Take for example, a casual stroll to pick up a book at the local bookstore. What would be a casual walk to the corner for some, leaves opportunity for the Parisian fashionable to adorn a pair of Lanvin Suede High Top shoes with a pair of jeans and a trendy t-shirt.

Of course when it comes to French design, being amongst the trendy and elite is a de rigueur of the footwear fashionable. This being true one of the noticeable pieces which surfaced last year were the Louis Vuitton models designed by rapper Kanye West. The signature LV monogram motifs featured on the backside of the soul along with the tasseled laces brandishing the Louis Vuitton metal hardware speak of divine French styling for the hipster.

These tan suede high-top trainers with copper coloured patent leather toe cap present a indecorous look to what would be an overly simple casual outfit. One would find it hard not to be observant of the noticeable materials and usage of colors which makes it’s own statement and tends to be one of the key notes of French fashion. This uber-cool styling is sharp enough to seize the day as well as piercing the night-time and will have others gazing towards

Certain nights in France will require you to wear something which begets sexy. Thus the Givenchy leather platform wedge with metal studs are designed to keep you warm, and are longing to be worn with a short black or red mini skirt under a floor length white mink. One of our favorites may be these killer platforms which are sexy and sophisticated at the same time. Paired with the proper outfit these boots transform your legs into an enigma!

THE PATH LESS TRAVELLED A Review of Running Paths Within The Greater Toronto Area

Lakeshore Water Front, Toronto, Ontario

Somewhere within the denim of Torontonian culture exists a path of which every runner knows it’s existence but very few can conceive of it’s future.

T

he Waterfront running path is one of the most breath taking paths that one can encompass upon when taking an early morning stroll. On most weekends, if you are not early enough to embark on your run, you will be greeted by a world of tourists and bicycle hobbyist aspiring for the same picturesque landscape. But please take note; the early morning expedition is more than worth it. Starting in the East part of Etobicoke where one stretch of trail (2km from Royal York to Park Lawn) follows LakeShore Blvd, and makes its way through Sunnyside park, Woodbine Beach and Balmy Beach. But somewhere within this eden of architectural condos and tranquil islands afloat in the distance lies the new development. Although there has been much talk in the general public and city hall regarding the new waterfront development, most members of the general public are still left in the dark concerning some of the real workings to be taking place in late 2010.

CITY FOOTWEAR GUIDE

The Future of this path is the expected extension from Silver Birch Ave to Bellamy Rd (10Km). Construction on this stretch is expected start in 2010. This along with the completion of much of the new Waterfront property that will be developed along the lakeshore with the architectural hand of SteveAdams Inc (the same group responsible for developing the famous Sozing for the Bejing Olympics) will be one of the greatest attraction for any runners. There is always something majestic about running beside modern architecture, and having considered some of the worlds greatest waterfronts. it is the water that acts like a canvas to these great works. There is no better viewing angle that one can achieve when running past these modern wonders.
