IWO ROAD

CULTURE AND HERITAGE

12

Strategically located at a place where several roads meet, Iwo Road is a major route into and out of the city. It is mostly popular, especially in the south– western part of the country for its robust transportation services and networks. It is like the Piccadilly Circus in London, as it connects several roads and

freeways, leading into and outside the city of Ibadan. When in Ibadan and need to travel across different parts of the country by road, this is where to start. Motor parks here are filled with travel-ready buses and cars alike, ready to connect potential passengers to almost any city within the country, whether by day or night, to such places as Lagos, Abeokuta, Ife, Osogbo, Ogbomoso, Ilorin, Auchi, Okene, towards the Eastern part, cities in the north and every other major city in the country. Undoubtedly, it is the heart of the city that pumps visitors and inhabitants alike into and out of her.

IBADAN THE CITY OF FIRSTS

Cocoa House, Dugbe.

From the health sector to hospitality, sports to communication, Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo state, the largest native city in Sub-Saharan Africa and the largest city in West Africa, is indeed a city of one too many firsts. Ibadan, a city jealously guarded by seven hills and valleys used to be the most populous, as well as a political beehive and seat to the Western Nigeria government. This wealth of inerasable history adds to the peculiarities and pride of Ibadan.

15

CULTURE AND HERITAGE

In preparation for self-governance in countries colonised by the British Empire in the West African Coast, the colonial masters believed that the establishment of tertiary institutions would produce citizens with the educational and administrative capabilities for the new governments that would emerge. It is in line with these plans of the British government that the Sir Walter Elliot’s Commission was established in June 1943 with 14 members. Of these 14 members, 3 were from West African colonies including Reverend I.O. RansomeKuti representing Nigeria. In view of the above, the University of Ibadan, or as it was originally called, the University College, Ibadan, was established on 17th November 1948 with three founding faculties; Arts, Science and Medicine, making it the first university in Nigeria. It was initially established as an extension of the University College London, hence why it was called University College, Ibadan. It became the University of Ibadan in 1962 when it severed its links with the University College London. Currently, the university has 13 colleges, including Colleges of Medicine, Agriculture and Forestry, Law, Education, Public Health, Veterinary Medicine and Technology. The campus has 13 halls of residence for post-graduates and undergraduates. The university also has such facilities as a botanical garden, zoological garden, and the University Media Centre which houses the university radio station. The University College Hospital was strategically located in Ibadan being the largest city in West Africa. An Act of Parliament established the University College Hospital (UCH), in 1952, in response to the need of the training of medical personnel and other healthcare professionals for the country and the West African Sub-Region. In 1950, representatives of the Faculty of Medicine in the University College London came on a visit to Ibadan to evaluate the suitability of a teaching hospital for the training of medical students. The representatives found the Ibadan hospitals unsuitable and recommended the construction of a modern teaching hospital comparable in standard with the London College Hospital. Accordingly, on 1st of October 1953, construction of the University College Hospital commenced and was officially opened November 1957 with the finest architectural masterpiece in Africa. UCH was initially commissioned with 500 bed spaces. Currently, the hospital has 850 bed spaces and 163 examination couches with occupancy rates ranging from 55-60%. Since its inception, the hospital has trained thousands of doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists and more, with a newrecorded success in open-heart surgery.

THE NIGERIAN TELEVISION AUTHORITY Television broadcasting in Nigeria began on 31st October 1959 under the name Western Nigerian Government Broadcasting Corporation, in Ibadan, and was the first television station in Tropical Africa. In 1977, Nigeria Television Authority was inaugurated as commercial broadcaster with the monopoly on television broadcasting in the country. NTA runs the largest local television network in Nigeria. The Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) was established by the then Western Region leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, with a primary aim to provide information on what was going on within Nigeria and outside of it.

LIBERTY STADIUM The Liberty Stadium, located along Liberty road, is a football stadium with a capacity of 25,000. The stadium was opened in 1960 during the era of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the then Premier of the Western region. The stadium, with its firstclass drainage, watering system and architectural design, was the first of its kind in the country. It has a beautiful all-seater with tartan running tracks and an underground entrance for teams, leading straight to a few feet of the main playing pitch. The Liberty Stadium has an architectural masterpiece that is considered grandeur in today’s world of stadium design. In 2010, the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, renamed it the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, in honor of the late Premier.

SHOPPING

GUIDE TO SHOPPING DURING THE

FESTIVE SEASON

Christmas is just around the corner, and it’s that time of the year when everyone seems to be working harder to make more money, so they can have a fun and memorable Christmas with family and friends. Stores stock up on much more than usual during the festive season, and one is bound to be spoilt for choice when trying to buy stuff for the home, for friends or family. Christmas shopping is always fun;

whether at the local markets or at the shopping malls and stores, but we must admit it can also be tiring and stressful. Here are some tips to ensure a rewarding shopping experience this time of year.

Here are some tips to ensure a rewarding shopping experience this time of year.

SHOPPING

PLAN AHEAD

As much as possible, especially for gift items and drinks, plan ahead. Avoid inflation in prices, crowded parking spaces, increase in petty crime, and stores running out of some staple items. Chickens and Christmas go together here, so get yours weeks ahead and if possible, rear them in coops till Christmas!

SET A BUDGET

Yes, Christmas is the time when most of us do our biggest spending but it’s still very much advisable to have budgets and try hard to stick to them. Allow room for unbudgeted items and outings too (It’s Christmas), but try hard to rein the spending in. January is also around the corner.

BARGAIN HARD!

You may not have this option at the malls, but at the local markets, arm yourselves by bringing those relentless negotiation skills to the markets. Most Market traders in Ibadan may not be educated economists but they could prove hard nuts to crack.

SHOP EARLY

Shopping malls or local markets, it’s always a good idea to shop earlier in the day. Apart from having better parking options, you do not want to begin shopping when most choice goods would have been swept up.

INVEST IN EXPERIENCES

Yes, buy a lot of stuff for yourself, family and friends, but also splurge a bit on experiences. Instead of buying so much material stuff, consider a day or weekend outing you can share with people. Go to the movies, Agodi Gardens, the UI Zoological Gardens, or the Museum with your family or friends, and knock yourselves out having fun and taking pictures and videos that will stay with you for ages. Lastly, have fun this season. Shop conscientiously, but don’t deprive yourself of a great time with the people you love.

THE PALMS

A one-stop for the discerning shopper looking to buy any and everything, This Shoprite outlet is the largest in Western Nigeria and parades a huge array of wares, both locally fabricated and imported.

THE VENTURA COCOA AND MALL HERITAGE MALLS

Ventura Mall has carved a niche for itself as the family entertainment hub of Ibadan. Focused on entertainment, fun, and relaxation, this compact mall assures lovers of the nightlife a home.

Cocoa and Heritage Malls share the site of the one of the oldest storey buildings in former western Nigeria. Centrally located at Dugbe, shoppers, movie-goers and networkers alike

SHOPPING

OPEN-AIR MARKETS

Although large sprawling shopping malls have sprung up in recent years, and are quickly becoming favourites, especially with middle and upper class of society, Ibadan still boasts of a thriving local market scene, with several local markets spread all over the city, selling out every day. The market scene in Ibadan is very viable and traders throng in from all over the country (and even foreign countries) to buy and sell a host of products including food items, livestock, varieties of textile materials, clothing, household items, kitchen utensils, electrical appliances and their parts, and so much more. Here’s a quick guide to the major markets in Ibadan. BODIJA MARKET It is a popular wholesale openair market, situated along the Secretariat-UI Road, Bodija, Ibadan, and is most reputed for food products; both fresh and dried. Tons of food produce are offloaded and sold here on a daily basis from nearby and distant parts of the country. It boasts of all kinds of food items used in preparing Yoruba staples.

throng this venue to shop, catch a movie, and/or even hang out.

JERICHO MALL

In honour of the forthcoming Christmas season, shops at Jericho Mall are having a pay small small promo. Shoppers can come in and choose an item of their choice, and pay in three installments for items worth N50,000 and above. Talk about a convenient Christmas shopping!

ALESHINLOYE MARKET Located near Alalubosa, Ibadan, Aleshinloye Market, unlike Bodija, is not a wholesale market, but it’s a huge retail one. It is a big market for household items and furnishings, kitchen utensils as well as gift items and jewelry. It also features a huge clothes market, a food market and an abattoir. OJE MARKET Is situated about a kilometre away from the Olubadan’s palace, and is one of the oldest markets in Ibadan. It is best known for being a home to a variety of traditional fabrics like aso-oke, ankara, alaari, etc., which are sold everyday to traders from

across the continent. Traditional accessories like ornamental beads are also sold here. Traditional herbs are another specialty of this market. GBAGI MARKET Gbagi market is located along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway and is one of the biggest markets in Nigeria. It is also about a kilometer from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, making it easily accessible to travelers. It’s most reputed for its textile collection. An innumerable variety and quantity of clothes and fabrics in wholesale are available here, as well as accessories, making it the perfect Owambe (Nigerian party) market. AGBENI MARKET Agbeni Market is a wholesale market situated along Ologede street, Abeni, Ibadan. It is unique for its vast collection of household items, provisions, wines and drinks. OGUNPA MARKET Located along the Dugbe-Alawo axis, Ogunpa market is best known for electronic appliances and machinery. Blenders, grinding machines and even small generators with their parts can be found there. However, to get a wider range of electronic appliances and their parts, try the markets around Iwo road. NOTE: With the exception of Aleshinloye, most of these markets are in open spaces and thus lack sufficient parking spaces, so, you may have to park on roadsides or just beside stalls. Because these markets are open and often crowded, your car is pretty much safe. Just ensure to ask people around to help you watch the car, and as much as possible, park close to where you are shopping. AND, make sure you don’t park where your car can be towed away (ask people where you’re parking to be sure).

TRANSPORT

LAND INFO Definitely, the dominant mode of transportation in Ibadan is by road, and the city’s public transport system is one of the oldest and most extensive in the country. With nearly all major roads double carriages, and overhead bridges at strategic places to reduce congestion, movement has never been much easier, aided with the alternative of motorcycles (okada), private and public cabs, and luxury buses, ready to convey you to your destination. The city is reputed for her Micra cabs (a Sedan taxi), a Nissan brand, which are easily noticeable to visitors and can be found everywhere in the city, saliently immersing into the culture and daily life of the inhabitants and the city as a whole. They have practically become the official taxi of the city, substituting the old mini buses, providing more privacy and relative comfort for commuters. Not up to share your cab with others, you can explore your option of hiring it for your private trip within the city. With fares rather on the low side compared to other cities in the country, these cabs are there to take you anywhere, while you sit back and enjoy the view of the largest city in West Africa.

RAIL INFO

Ibadan, since over a century ago witnessed the advent of a rail system. Its railway station located at Liebu bypass was built by the British Colonial Government in 1896. It is an interstate train station offering railway transportation services to other parts of the country, and a major terminus on the main railway line linking Lagos with Kano in the Northern part of the country. The rail leads to Ogun on one end and Ilorin on the other. It is most commonly patronized by traders transporting heavy goods and the likes of them with a penchant for rail travelling. Certainly not a proud mention, the Ibadan railway service has deteriorated over the years, but hopes are once again being raised, with efforts recently put in place towards its revitalization and development, as a standard gauge rail track project was launched in March, 2017 by the present administration, beginning from the Apapa port in Lagos, through Ibadan, to the Northern part of the country, and with a hope for completion by December 2018. A welcome alternative to anticipate!
