Samuel Johnson's Tankard
L
ichfield's most famous son, Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) achieved fame as writer of the most comprehensive English dictionary seen at that point which was published in 1755. He was famously portrayed on the screen in Blackadder by Robbie Coltrane and it is known that he enjoyed a tipple, so it seems appropriate that his birthplace is famous for its excellent pubs and restaurants. A silver tankard that was gifted to this man of letters has recently been discovered on an antiques valuation day that took place, appropriately, in an eighteenth century pub in the city. Of typical 18th century design with a hinged lid, the solid silver vessel bears the hallmarks of Richard Bayley and was made in London in 1735. This is a fine but not particularly unusual piece, that stands out from the crowd because of the inscription on the main body which reads as follows: 'This I give to my Esteemed Friend D. Samuel Johnson. When this you see Remember Me. C.H 1762' It is thought that it was gifted to the great man by one Charles Hitch who was a bookseller in London circa 1733-1764. He was one of the publishers of Johnson's Dictionary in 1755 and it is probable that this tankard was a gift from him. There are a few business references to Hitch in Johnson’s correspondence. The tankard was discovered at the Hedgehog Inn in Lichfield where Hansons Auctioneers hold their weekly free valuation days every Monday from 10.30am to 12.30pm in aid of St Giles Hospice. It is being offered for public auction in Hansons’ 20th December Fine Art Auction and is estimated to fetch £4,000-5,000. For further details please contact Hansons Auctioneers on 01283 733988 or email service@hansonsauctioneers.co.uk

Part of Corieltauvi gold hoard
Unearthing History
Here, local metal detectorist Gary Starkey of the Tamworth and Lichfield Search Society gives us a taste of some of his remarkable finds.
I
started in metal detecting by chance when a good friend of mine who I hadn’t seen for a couple of years invited me to go detectoring and to use his spare machine. We went out a couple of times (finding not too much) until we were in a grass field and I had a signal which had me digging about 10cm down. A greeny-grey object lay in the bottom on the hole. I called to Joey, who informed me that it was a Bronze Age axe head of considerable age! I was hooked. I had it assessed and was told it was an Arreton bronze axe dating back to the early Bronze Age – so about 3,900 years old! Since then I have gained local permissions to detect on land in and around Tamworth and
Elizabeth I shilling 12
Lichfield and have been to rallies around the country. I am also a member of the Tamworth and Lichfield Search Society Club. Finds since then have been very memorable ranging from early coins to super artefacts. Possibly my best year so far was 2013 which started with the finding of a lovely medieval gold posy-ring. In the same field I found a fabulous and possibly unique gold medieval reliquary cross in very good order. Then in February I was detecting with two friends when gold Staters started to appear. We had discovered a hoard of gold Corieltauvi Staters (these are gold coins made by a tribe living in Britain before the Romans invaded in 43AD). The Staters were around 2,000 years old, and in total
A Corieltauvi gold stater
we found 33 that are now in The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery (Stoke) on display. The field where I found the Staters was a wonderful place to detect, as after I’d had a poor day trying (and failing) to find more, I had gone down to where my van was parked and 15 yards from it I got a signal. I dug it to reveal my second gold posy ring in three months! We’d returned to the field assuming that no more would come out of it as it was now very quiet due to us finding everything that was there, but one afternoon, chatting to the farmer who owned the land, I showed him a curly piece of metal that had just come up which he thought was just a modern spring. I wasn’t so sure so I showed it to the Finds Liaison Officer who told

New owners for The Cathedral Lodge Hotel
A
local family firm has added another hotel to its portfolio with the acquisition of one of Lichfield’s well known hotels. The Cathedral Lodge on Beacon Street has been bought by the Webb Hotel Group who have owned The George Hotel in Bird Street for 16 years and also own Moor Hall Hotel & Spa in Sutton Coldfield and The Gables Hotel near Bristol. Formerly known as The Little Barrow, the three star hotel has 36 ensuite bedrooms, a bar and a large function room and is a popular place to stay for those visiting the city for business in the week or for customers enjoying a weekend away. Angela Burns, Group Chief Executive commented: “We are delighted to have added the Cathedral Lodge Hotel to our group, as it has huge potential. We have decided to change the name of the hotel to The Cathedral Hotel, then in January we will start to plan some changes to improve the hotel and move the business forward. We are really excited about getting to know the team and welcoming everyone over the busy Christmas and New Year period.”
Unearthing History, continued from page 12
me it was an Iron Age Spiral Ring and again qualified as treasure. I like to think it was off the finger of the man or woman who deposited the hoard coins but we’ll never know. Other gold items that I found that year included two sovereigns; a small, plain gold ring; a more modern gold pendant and a small seal – a truly golden year! The hoard changed the history books as only four other examples of the type of coin we had found had been discovered in Staffordshire. To add 33 in one hit was very memorable. I often wonder how they got there. Maybe someone in our area had traded with the tribe as these coins are more prevalent in Humberside, Leicestershire and North Coast areas. Many good friends have been made metal detecting, and days out digging are always good. It’s great to be able to show whoever you’re with what you’ve both found. It’s also good to be able to reunite someone with a ring or jewellery item that they’ve lost. That happened to a chap called Dave whose wedding ring was lost on Lichfield Rugby Ground. A phone call to our club chairman saw myself and two other members going there one Sunday afternoon. He’d put cones out to mark roughly where the ring could have been, and then left it to us. After 35 minutes Bill had located it. The look on his face was priceless. He wanted to reward us but we said just a mention in the local paper would suffice! An interesting place I’ve detected lately was Tamworth Football Club who were digging up their pitches to lay a new one. Permission was granted, and I was there after the diggers had stopped. I was amazed that a few Roman coins and a brooch came up about 1ft down along with all sorts of odd bits and bobs. I made up a small presentation frame to hang in the Directors Room. I love the feel of an object when you find it. It’s so very old and you are the first person to touch it since the owner dropped it or threw it away. It’s also sad to think that someone lost a treasured item - maybe their valuable wedding ring, when we know how poor some people were in days gone by. Detecting is a little more difficult these days as crops are out and back in again much quicker, sometimes as quick as the same day. Deep ploughed fields are quite rare now but opportunities are still out there and I shall be detecting while my bones will carry me. I leave you with a selection of my finds. Happy hunting! - Gary Starkey

Walking Through History
O
n Sunday November 20th, local author and editor of Citylife in Lichfield, Joss Musgrove Knibb launched her latest book ‘Lichfield in 50 Buildings’ at The Shop at No.9 (Cathedral Shop), The Close. Lichfield in 50 Buildings is a guide to the extraordinary architectural history of the city. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a walking tour, and through its lavish illustrations gives every reader a real taste of a place that Lichfeldians are still rightly proud of. Exploring 50 of Lichfield’s architectural wonders, the book tells the story of the development of the city – its wars, plagues, saints, sinners, Saxons and chancers - through the buildings that are still standing and still bearing witness today. Joss commented: “Lichfield’s buildings allow us to look into the mind of those who commissioned and built them. 12th and 13th century medieval homes are normally set out in the most practical way possible. Church buildings are songs in stone to the glory of God and their patrons. 17th century houses speak about a growing confidence in trade. 18th century buildings are interested in light and scientific principles and 19th century edifices are full of the confidence of the Industrial Revolution and empire. “Lichfield in 50 Buildings is a walk through the growth of a city. Lichfield, perhaps more than any other city in Staffordshire holds a beautiful collection of buildings, which are still used as churches, museums, schools, homes, offices and shops. They’re still ‘alive’ - not frozen in amber but still filled with Lichfeldians living their lives. It’s been a pleasure to write and I hope that I have done our city justice.” On Sunday 20th November, over 50 people enjoyed a free mini tour of some of the hidden stories and architectural secrets of The Close and area, and heard about the research behind the book. Joss will be running a second free tour of The Close and city in Spring 2017 (date to be announced). Lichfield in 50 Buildings is published by Amberley Publishing and retails at £14.99. The book is available to purchase from The Shop at No.9, The Close; St Mary’s Heritage Centre, Market Square; Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum, Breadmarket Street, Lichfield; WH Smith, Waterstones, Amazon and Foyles and is available to purchase as an ebook in most formats. Canal Proves its Worth in Storm A
180 metre section of the Lichfield Canal which has been recently restored proved invaluable when Storm Angus and intense rainfall hit the south side of the city in November. Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust has been working closely with the Environment Agency to allow water to be stored within the canal, but the extreme water run-off from Storm Angus resulted in the canal pound being filled in only a few hours, delaying
26
the arrival of the floodwater peak downstream and reducing the flood risk. Regular walkers along the adjacent Heritage Towpath Trail, which also forms part of the Heart of England Way, were amazed at the sight of the canal pound filled with water for the first time in over 50 years. The Trust’s engineering director Peter Buck said: “Making space for floodwater and in particular natural flood management within the restored Lichfield Canal
infrastructure has been a goal of the LHCRT for some time and is in line with recent government recommendations. “The LHCRT will continue to collaborate with both the Environment Agency and Staffs County Council flood risk team to ensure the Lichfield Canal plays an important and integral part in the floodwater management plan for the south of Lichfield to reduce flood risk downstream. “This storm has demonstrated the benefits of storing flood water in this one pound of the Lichfield Canal.” The floodwater from Storm Angus stored within the canal pound is now draining down naturally through a temporary pipe, pending agreement of the final control structures with the Environment Agency.

Lichfield Camera Club is 70 Years I Old!
Lichfield Camera Club was originally founded in 1946 under the name of The Lichfield Photographic Society, so we have now been going for 70 years! The club originally met in a room above a draper’s shop, in the building which is now the HSBC Bank in Lichfield. In the early days the club had around 20 members. In the intervening period the club has amalgamated with other local photographic clubs and has moved location on numerous occasions.
By Graham Slight, Vice-Chairman of the Lichfield Camera Club
Peekaboo by Darron Matthews
n September 2015 the Club moved to excellent new premises in the Lichfield Methodist Centre, Backcester Lane, Lichfield, WS13 6JH. We are a friendly club, with a membership of around 60, which encourages members of all abilities to improve their image taking and processing techniques. The type of camera which you own is not critical, it is how you use it that matters. All of our members were beginners once and a number are now highly qualified and respected in photographic circles. We meet every Wednesday evening between 7.30pm and 10pm, from September to June, and new members/visitors are very welcome. We meet, in the Methodist Centre, for a programme of talks by external presenters, monthly internal competition evenings, external competitions against other Midlands’ clubs and practical demonstration evenings. On the first Monday of each month we also run tutorial workshops covering image critique/ advice and Photoshop techniques. This is particularly useful in helping the less experienced photographers to improve their skills levels so that they feel confident to enter the club competitions. Details of the programme of events and other information on the club can be found on our website www.lichfieldcameraclub.org Over the past few years the club has taken on a number of commissions for local organisations such as: • Lichfield Cathedral – At the invitation of the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield Cathedral, members of the club photographed the life of the Cathedral over a thirteen month period. The club was granted access to the Cathedral and environs with a brief to document the people and events involved in a typically busy year of activity at the Cathedral. Eighteen members took part in this challenging project. • Staffordshire Wildlife Trust – over the period of a year we documented the flora and fauna at the majority of Staffordshire Wildlife’s reserves around the county as well as some of the events hosted by the SWT during the year. • Lichfield in Bloom – we photographed the judging of Lichfield in Bloom at locations around the City as well as providing the photographs for the Lichfield in Bloom 2017 Calendar. These commissions encourage members to photograph topics which they may not normally attempt. The club also holds two annual exhibitions where our work is on display to the public. In December we hold our Winter Exhibition in the Guildhall in Lichfield and in July we hold our Summer Exhibition at the Chasewater Innovation Centre. For those who are interested, we also encourage and support members who wish to gain distinctions in the Royal Photographic Society and/or the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. So, whether you wish to improve your photography or just attend presentations by experts, we would be delighted to see you, just give us a try. Hope Valley Sunrise by Sue Freeman

The Angels are Coming!
‘A Cathedral Illuminated’ is back this year and ‘The Angels are Coming! This stunning large scale projection artwork will be lighting up the front of the Cathedral alongside projections around the city-centre. In addition, there will be a spectacular installation of 10,000 angels inside the Cathedral. This has been created with the help of local school children and community groups from all around Lichfield District who are participating in the creation of the angels, after being invited to each write a personal seasonal message inside each angel which will form a unique art installation in the Cathedral South Transcept. The overall event, called Lichfield Lumiere, has evolved from last year’s Cathedral projection which was seen by thousands of people. The event which includes this year’s Cathedral illumination
32
runs from 19th-23rd December. The whole event around the city is free, including the Cathedral projections. Free tickets are available providing entry to a ticketed area and entry inside the Cathedral after the show for access to see the 10,000 Angels installation and more. To enter the Cathedral on the night of the Sound and Light show you need to get a ticket from The Shop at No.9, The Close. Donations are welcomed to support the ongoing development of such large scale cultural projects and community engagement through art. Look out on Twitter #10000angels and on Facebook @Lichfieldcathedral for the unique Advent calendar – where each day of Advent specially created films showing different elements of the festive season will be shown, sharing the city’s hidden talents
and Christmas wishes. The Christmas Sound and Light show and installation is the creation of Lichfield Cathedral’s Artist in Residence, Peter Walker. Working with David Harper, composer, to produce this unique artwork together, they collaborate under the name Luxmuralis (meaning Light Murals). During the summer the same team created ‘Before Action’ and with the assistance of Oscar winning actor Eddie Redmayne, over 6,000 people visited the Cathedral, many of whom had never visited before.

Buying Your Christmas Tree
H
By Byron Lewis
asn’t this year flown by! Already Christmas is upon us and with it, the time to decorate your home and garden for the festive season. Lichfield Garden Centre, at Curborough is having 600 Real Christmas Trees delivered from MidWales, all ready for putting into your lounge to give pleasure over the festive period – but how do you best look after them? There are many types of Real Christmas Trees, ranging from the traditional Norway Spruce through to the more popular Nordman Fir. The Nordman has become so popular because it is one of the best trees for needle retention (so that your carpet stays carpet coloured and not covered in tree!). It is also soft to the touch, so ideal if you have small children at home – it is also easy to decorate and generally very bushy, so giving good value for money. Whatever tree you choose, there are a few simple rules to follow: • Keep your tree watered. This is the most important part of the process. Once a tree has been cut, it is no longer able to find water itself – so you will need to water it regularly. There are numerous designs of Christmas Tree Stand which incorporate a water ‘reservoir’, so keep this full of water at all times. A medium tree can drink up to 3 pints of water daily! • Select your tree early in December. This should give you the best selection in terms of choice of sizes and shapes. But once you’ve purchased, keep the tree outdoors until you are ready to decorate – this will keep it looking better for longer. • Keep your tree away from heat – if you can, turn off any radiators or fires that are alongside the tree. Again, this prolongs the life of the tree. If you want to grow your own tree year after year, garden centres often sell Pot Grown and Containerised trees. Choose the Pot Grown option here, as containerised trees have previously been grown in open ground and are less likely to succeed when planted out as roots will have been cut to make it fit the pot. Another tip with Pot Grown trees is to keep them outdoors as long as possible. If you do take them indoors, acclimatize them after Christmas to the lower outdoor temperatures to reduce stress, and as before, water regularly and keep away from direct sources of heat. The Christmas Shop at Lichfield Garden Centre has a huge selection (600!) of Cut and Pot grown Real Christmas Trees, as well as homemade wreaths and garlands. The Shop also sells a fantastic range of Lights, Baubles, Christmas Ornaments and more! Christmas Lunch With Extra Style!
When it comes to crockery ‘the Sunday best’ can be easily purchased. Royal Albert, Old Country Roses, Portmeirion, Botanic Garden and Doulton dinner services regularly come up for sale. It might come as somewhat of an eye-opener to realise that a Botanic Garden service can be picked up for just a few hundred pounds. By Jessica Forreseter, Auctioneer and Valuer at Richard Winterton Auctioneers Auction houses are an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ of good quality and desirable items, all ripe for ith Christmas fast approaching, many of us are undertaking the buying at reasonable and obtainable prices. With regular three those lesser known seasonal traditions of totting up the weekly sales and always some 1500 lots on offer, there is always a huge number of guests expected for Christmas lunch and variety of interesting and essential lots that you didn’t even realise you contemplating the seating plan. There’s lots of things to be considered needed in your life, waiting for you to buy! from whether to use the best cutlery and matching crockery to finding enough glassware for everyone. Please contact Richard Winterton Auctioneers on 01543 251081 or There is a certain je ne sais quoi when it comes to laying the table for online via richardwinterton.co.uk for further details. Christmas Day lunch. There can be real excitement in finding out the best tableware, (which is never dishwasher proof), using all of the cutlery (from starters and soups to butter knives and pudding forks), and having the standard discussion of exactly which fork, knife or spoon goes where. It is one of those times of year when the linen napkins and silver napkin rings are taken out and the use of them relished… until it all needs tidying away anyway! If you’ve come to the realisation that you don’t have enough (or the right kind) of equipment for everyone, a visit to the local auction house is definitely the best option. At every sale there is a good selection of cut and crystal glassware from Dartington to Stewart up for grabs as well as various full and part canteens of cutlery for a fraction of the retail value. Silver napkin rings can be picked up for less than £10 each and quite frankly who needs matching examples? There is something quite charming about picking up examples which are specifically chosen to appeal to the individual they are intended for.

Lichfield team marks Remembrance weekend
Members of staff at Specsavers, Market Street, Lichfield raised more than £300 for armed forces charity, The Royal British Legion, on Saturday 12 November, ahead of Remembrance Sunday. Customers visiting the Specsavers store were transported back in time to the 1940s, with staff decorating the store and ditching their usual uniforms in favour of wartime outfits. Store director, Praful Patel commented: “We’re delighted to have raised so much for such an important charity; The Royal British Legion has worked to improve the lives of service personnel since the First World War. The work they do is essential to those who have served our country, so we wanted to take this opportunity to raise money and give something back.” Staff also hosted a bake sale in store, selling a range of homemade treats throughout the day in exchange for donations, while well-known Royal British Legion volunteer, Tony Robinson, was present selling poppies as part of the charity’s annual Poppy Appeal to raise additional funds. All leftover cakes from the store’s bake sale were donated to the
54
Birmingham Homeless Outreach. Praful added: “We were delighted to have Tony’s help and we also received a very kind donation of cakes for our sale from the Lichfield WI, so we’d like to say a big thank you to them, as well as everyone who came along at the weekend for their generosity. The £330 raised will go towards supporting thousands of serving men, women, veterans and their families in the armed forces community.” Established after the First World War, The Royal British Legion supports members of the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force. The charity aims to improve the welfare of service men and women as well as their families and safeguard the memory of those who have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of others. Crimes Against Christmas
Agatha Christie meets the 12 Days of Christmas in the Lichfield Garrick’s ultimate anti-panto, Crimes Against Christmas. Christmas is a time of year for family and children, but sometimes adults just need to get away. This year the Lichfield Garrick has teamed up with critically acclaimed comedy company, New Old Friends, to present Crimes Against Christmas, a comedy thriller for adults. The plot is loosely based around Agatha Christie’s ‘And Then There Were None’ with an apparently random group of people mysteriously invited to a Christmas party on a remote island. Once on the island, the guests start to die in suspiciously Christmassy ways: Pipers whilst piping, Lords whilst leaping, Maids whilst milking - and guest of honour Peter Artridge doesn’t like the look of the rope in the pear tree one bit. An alternative Christmas show to conventional panto, it features a host of characters brought to life by just four actors, sweeping the audience along with a fast based narrative and enough hints (and red herrings) to have them wondering just who the villain is to the very end. Tim Ford, Lichfield Garrick’s Artistic Director, said: “Take a break from over
indulging and Christmas shopping and see this wickedly funny murder mystery. Full of adult humour and tomfoolery, this festive production is perfect to enjoy with family and friends. We are delighted to be co-producing with New Old Friends this Christmas. We love their work and ethos and feel the partnership is a perfect complement to the work we are trying to develop and create here in Lichfield.” New Old Friends and Lichfield Garrick have teamed up to co-produce Crimes Against Christmas, with support from Theatre Royal Bath, Natural Theatre Company and the Arts Council England. Crimes Against Christmas runs in the Lichfield Garrick’s Studio from Friday 9 to Sunday 31 December, with a variety of evening and matinee performances. Tickets are selling fast! Book online at www.lichfieldgarrick.com or by calling the Box Office on 01543 412121.
