Lichfield’s canal restoration trust was recently selected by Waitrose & Partners Lichfield to be supported through its Community Matters scheme. Over the course of December the store displayed the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust name, registered charity number and a short description of what the Trust does on one of three Community Matters boxes into which customers could place a token received after their shop, leading to a donation from the store. The Lichfield Canal, gradually being brought back to life from its closure 60 years ago, provides a natural corridor for public recreation and wildlife habitats. Led by unpaid volunteers raising its own funds, the Trust has restored some sections along the south of Lichfield, and more are presently in progress. .......................................................................................

Gentleshaw Common in the Future Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership has been awarded a grant of £192,291 over six years by National Grid’s Landscape Enhancement Initiative to be delivered at Gentleshaw Common. The grant is provided to help reduce the visual impact of existing electricity pylons and overhead lines in protected landscapes. Although the pylons will remain in place, the aim is to carry out works to restore the Common and create a place that is buzzing with heathland wildlife. The project will be delivered by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust at their Gentleshaw Common Nature Reserve. Gentleshaw Common is an 86-hectare Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), designated for the special mix of heathland plants living there. By controlling bracken, scrub and purple moor grass this will allow the characteristic flora and fauna of lowland heath, a nationally important habitat, to
thrive. Areas of wet heath will also be restored to benefit more delicate plants such as the beautiful yellow spikes of Bog Asphodel and the carnivorous Sundew. There will also be improvements to encourage sensitive access by restoring footpaths, constructing boardwalks, and improving the small car park to enable visitors the opportunity to experience and enjoy nature up close. To find out more about the National Grid’s Landscape Enhancement Initiative, visit www.lei.nationalgrid.com.

Sultry Kim Rocks the Guildhall! ..........................
K
im Cypher brought Lichfield to its knees on Wednesday 4th December as part of the Lichfield Arts Festival!
Joined by her talented band of musicians, the inspirational saxophonist performed at The Guildhall to a crowd of jazz enthusiasts. Featuring hits from her latest album, Love Kim x, the tour launched back in February and has seen Kim perform at a variety of festivals and venues across the country. Kim’s incredible talent as both a saxophonist and a singer saw her alternating between playing her many instruments (soprano, alto and tenor) and then showcasing her sultry singing voice. With a style spanning many musical genres, Kim blends funky jazz with her own quirky twist, which is applied to both her original compositions as well as carefully chosen covers, with influences such as Pee Wee Ellis and Billie Holiday clearly evident. Following an uplifting performance, culminating in a Christmas classic which got the whole audience clapping along, Kim indulged her fans with photographs and by signing copies of her latest album. Help Combat Make a Difference in 2020! Social Isolation ............................... ............................... K

ecently the lovely Cali was the 2,500th hound to find a loving home by Greyhound Trust’s Hall Green branch. Cali celebrated her retirement by wearing a fetching tiara to mark the occasion! We know this cheeky girl will have a fabulous new life with her new owners, Sadie and Josh. Hall Green homed just short of 200 dogs in 2019 and we’d like to find even more homes in 2020. But 28 of the 40 hounds in our kennels are black. Did you know that black dogs wait longer to be adopted than their lighter pals? No one really knows why. They are just as loyal and loving as any other dog and, with proper care, their coats shine and gleam in the sunshine. So why are there so many black hounds? Many years ago a black top champion racer called Top Honcho became a very sought after stud dog, siring thousands of puppies worldwide and so black genes are dominant – this explains the increase in black greyhounds. If your New Year’s resolution is to make a difference, remember, black is beautiful in the greyhound world. Adopting one greyhound won’t change the world but the world will surely change for that one black greyhound.

Visit our website at www.greyhoundtrusthallgreen.org.uk, or call us on 0121 426 4810, to arrange to meet Athos, Gandalf, Lola, Mike, Zany, Rosie and all our other black beauties! Hall Green is completely run by volunteers so please get in touch if you want to help by walking or even just socialising with these amazing dogs at our Shenstone or Hagley kennels.

Cinderella at the Lichfield Garrick By Jono Oates
G
............................
litz, glamour, giggles, gags and glad rags were all on show at the Lichfield Garrick this Christmas for their smash hit 2019 panto Cinderella. Produced, for the fourth year running, by Evolution Pantomimes, this was a highly professional, very glossy production with excellent props, costumes, singing, dancing, and stage management which delighted the sell-out crowds from early December through to the New Year. From start to finish this panto was a treat to the eyes and on the ears, full of high energy dances, dazzling costumes, catchy songs, funny jokes, local references and with a whole coach load of excruciating puns! Cinderella, Buttons, Dandini, Baron Hardup, the Fairy Godmother and, of course, the Two Ugly Sisters were all familiar cast names in this well known, and loved, panto which was originally written by Frenchman Charles Perrault in 1697. The first act was good fun and closed with Cinderella and Buttons hopping on to the pumpkin coach led by an amazingly life like automated pantomime horse which arched its way across and over the front rows of the audience as the curtain went down, a magical way to enter the interval. The second act was sensational, with a host of songs both melodic and raucous, as well as gags galore, some slapstick silliness and audience participation with, naturally, a few ‘He’s Behind You’ moments! The opening number was the fabulous Boom! Shake the Room which got the whole theatre jumping and the cover of Aerosmith’s Walk this Way was a fabulous, and funny, treat. The closing sequence, in the majestic ball room, was a gorgeous, glittery, golden extravaganza and a fitting way to finish a high-quality panto. Rebecca Keatley, of Cbeebies fame, played the Fairy Godmother with plenty of wand waving and one-liners, all delivered with a wonderful Welsh accent. Beccy Lane was Cinderella and her duet with Dominic Griffin, a handsome and truly charming Prince Charming, singing One Night Only was a real highlight of the show, beautifully performed and
20
very moving. James Mitchell and George Akind were the two Ugly Sisters and were great fun with a myriad of jaw-dropping costume changes, each one more ridiculous than the previous, displaying wonderful comic timing and cheeky banter between themselves, the rest of the cast and the audience, they were a big hit with the boys and girls, as well as the older members of the audience. Sam Rabone, who also directed the show, made his first Garrick panto appearance in trousers rather than a dress. Usually the Dame, Sam played Buttons this year but his performance still had lots of laughs and knockabout fun, especially in the Ghostbusters scene. With energetic choreography, spectacular lighting and stunning stage sets Cinderella was a fantastic production full of laughs, excitement and wonder, the panto is definitely one of the highlights of the Garrick’s season. Next year’s panto, Peter Pan, has already been announced and Sam Rabone will definitely be back in a dress for 2020! Tickets for the 2020 panto are already on sale at the Lichfield Garrick, to book visit the Box Office on Castle Dyke, ring 01543 412121 or visit the website: www.lichfieldgarrick.com

Golf and Country Club Purchased by Locals

A
ward-winning Branston Golf & Country Club has been sold by Roger Kerry and the Kerry family to a group of local individuals which include Ben Laing, Managing Director at the golf club since 2013. The club, which is situated at Branston near Burton-on-Trent, was Roger’s initial concept and vision and he has overseen all stages in the successful growth and evolution of the club over the past 25 years. Established in 1992, the initial development phase included an 18-hole championship golf course, leisure facility complex including a swimming pool, and clubhouse. The club opened its doors to members and guests two years later in October 1994. Subsequent investment has seen the addition of a golf driving range and retail outlet, a second 9-hole golf course, outside hot-tub and spa area, as well as a purpose-built conference, banqueting and wedding

venue (The Pavilion). The club also has a creche, independently owned hair and beauty salon, treatment rooms, physio services, and extensive free on-site parking. Membership continues to thrive across all the categories which include peak and off-peak Health & Fitness, 7-day and 5-day golf (which automatically includes health & fitness), and academy golf. Roger Kerry said: “As I approach my 80th birthday, and after 25 years of hard work establishing a premium facility serving a large and loyal membership, I wanted to make sure that anybody taking over the club would continue the high standards and offerings that underpin Branston. I’m therefore delighted that the club will continue to operate under independent ownership and with strong local connections.”

The Dame who Lunched with the Queen
........................ By Jono Oates
It’s not every day that you meet someone who enjoyed a private lunch with the Queen but Dame Patricia Morgan-Webb did exactly that in March 2000! Our feature writer, Jono Oates (JO), met Dame Patricia (DP) at Barchester Spires Care Home recently and had a chat with her about her life, her career, her damehood and, of course, that luncheon with the Queen of England!
JO: It’s lovely to meet you. Where were you born? DP: I was born in the village of Oakdale, in the Sirhowy Valley, close to Tredegar in Wales. It was a mining village, my father was a miner, and Aneurin Bevan was the MP for that area. He worked in the pits until he was 29 and worked in the same coal seam as my father. JO: What memories do you have of growing up? DP: My mother, Evelyn, worked ‘in service’ as a maid for a family but then worked in a local shop. My dad, Hector, liked working down the pit, though he hated the pain – the coal seam was only three-foot high – and the poor rate of pay. But he loved the companionship of his fellow workers and the union. He worked six days a week, sometimes even seven as he worked on a Sunday sometimes too. When he came home he was covered in coal soot and he washed himself in a tub outside the back door, even in the winter, my mum helped to wash him. I went to the local grammar school, my father wanted me to go to an all-girls school but I wanted to go to a co-educational school. After a ‘vigorous’ debate I got my way as I told him that when I went to work it would be in an environment where there were both men and women. After my ‘A’ levels I was able to get a Miner’s Welfare Scholarship, not many of those were awarded then and I got a place at Swansea University. Very few people, especially girls, from the Welsh valleys went to university at that time. JO: What happened after you left university? DP: I achieved an honours degree in History and also a Diploma in Education so was qualified as a teacher. I
28
moved to the Midlands and worked as a teacher in Wolverhampton, then Dudley. I then moved in to Education Management at various locations round the Midlands. JO: You were made a dame in the year 2000. How did you find out about your award? DP: I was the first woman to receive a damehood for services to education. I received a letter in November 1999 and I had six weeks to accept – I didn’t have to think for a second about saying yes though! JO: How did you get to have lunch with her Majesty the Queen? DP: Well, after I had been made a Dame, I received a phone call in my college office in Nottingham, it was a man with a very posh accent who thanked me so much for taking my call. He told me that her Majesty would be delighted if I could join her for lunch at the Palace and this was for ME! At the lunch I sat next to the Duke of Edinburgh and across the table from the Queen. The Queen Mother was still alive then and was at the lunch too - I remember that she was very worried that her daughter, the Queen, was planning to have two more corgi dogs and the Queen Mother did not want her to have any more! The Queen was lovely, very kind and gentle. JO: You’re retired now – what do you get up to? DP: I like using social media, though I’m not very good at it, and I’ve recently got together with some old school friends who I’d not seen for over 60 years. I get on so well with my partner Chris and we meet up with friends in and around Longdon, where we have a cottage. JO: Have you enjoyed your life so far? DP: I’ve been very lucky, I’ve had a lovely time and met some lovely people, including the Queen of course! *My thanks to The Spires Barchester Care Home for their hospitality and hosting the meeting.

Tastes of the Season Celebrating Veganuary! By Simon Smith
Now we have all got through the excesses of the festive season I know many of you will be taking your first trip away from ‘Camp Carnivore’ for the month and exploring a plantbased diet as the world embraces Veganuary! This is familiar path to some but others find it hard to go “cold turkey” (an ironic phrase under the circumstances)! The biggest contrast when switching to a vegan diet is the difference in textures and less need to chew - so be aware that you need foods that will give teeth a bit more of a workout, such as nuts and the more fibrous vegetables. To give the flavours a boost I would recommend using strong herbs such as thyme, rosemary and sage. There are plenty of vegetable stocks on the market and you can add these herbs to alter the flavour. You will probably be buying more vegetables than before and, if you get them from the supermarket, choose the loose ones and weigh them as this will work out approximately one third cheaper than the pre-packed versions, and in addition you won’t be getting any dreaded plastic. There are many ways of cooking vegetables but I find you will get the most flavour out of them by roasting them, which brings out the natural sugars, rather than boiling and washing the taste out. When roasting, sprinkle oil over the top but try a flavoured one such as chilli, lemon or basil. Five minutes before they are cooked add some pumpkin seeds for added texture. If using salt, try the Himalayan pink which has a high mineral content. Good luck with your new diet and enjoy the excitement of trying new dishes and leading a healthier lifestyle!
Celeriac Cannelloni with Chestnut Mushrooms and Brazil Nuts
1 x head celeriac (this will be more than you need but you can roast the rest or make a lovely purée) 4ozs Brazil nuts 1 x pack chestnut mushrooms 2 x fresh sage leaves Large tomatoes ½pt Almond milk 4ozs vegan cheese 1 x fresh bay leaf
32
7ozs coconut cream (use just the set white part at the top not the water) 8 x pitted dates (medjool preferably) 2 tbsp maple syrup Method Take the avocado flesh out. Melt the vegan chocolate. Add all the ingredients to a food processor and whizz together. Pour or spoon into moulds and leave to chill for three hours before serving.
Cornflour to thicken sauce Nutmeg to season Method Peel the celeriac using a knife as the skin is very tough. Cut in half and then cut very fine slices from the middle section getting as much surface area as you can. Drop into boiling water for 15 seconds just to soften so you can bend it. Bring the almond milk to the boil with the sage leaves, bay leaf and grated nutmeg. Mix the cornflour with water to form the consistency of milk. Whisk into the almond milk carefully until it has the consistency of custard. Grate and mix in the cheese. Sautée the cleaned mushrooms, add chopped Brazil nuts and diced tomatoes. Mix in a little cheese sauce to bind. Wrap the mix into the celeriac slices, put into an oven dish, cover with the sauce and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees for 10 minutes.
Vegan Chocolate Mousse
1+ ½ x ripe avocado 8ozs vegan chocolate (or 2 teaspoons cocoa powder)

New Year, New Chapter, New You?
...............................
A
By Jo Howell, Motivational Speaker
s we welcome the new year, and the new decade, it is of course a great time to take stock of life and make plans, join gyms, lose weight and dream big. Inspirational quotes for the year ahead will be popping up everywhere and almost everyone you meet will have a new vigour as they embrace January and vow to make 2020 the year that they do ‘their thing’. I’m a huge fan of starting afresh and making plans for the year ahead and I’ve learnt over time the only way to actually stick to any of my ideas is to follow these tips:
1: Find Your Passion
What do you really love doing? What floats your boat? What gets you up at 6am on a dark morning? Grab that pen and paper and start making a list of things you enjoy – remember this list is for you and only you. Maybe you’ve always wanted to run a marathon but have no idea where to start - so pull on those old trainers and join a local running club. Fancy singing in a choir? Research your local Rock Choir, try a free taster session and don’t worry about your vocal range.
2: Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
If 2020 is the year you’re going make a change, you will probably need to feel a little uncomfortable at some point. If that means stepping on the scales at the local slimming group or enduring your first PT session at the gym, you need to feel nervous to make the change. You may be thinking of a bigger change than losing a few pounds and have your mind set on starting your own business, moving abroad or changing jobs. Yes,
it feels scary, daunting and overwhelming but remember these are only emotions and you can channel them however you choose. Comfort zones are very cosy places to stay but nothing will ever change if you reside there too long – remember you are not a tree; you don’t have roots.
3: Believe You Can
Of course, making changes to your life often comes with a huge dose of self-doubt. That pesky little voice on your shoulder telling you all the reasons why you can’t lose weight (you tried, and failed, last year remember?) or why you’ll look ridiculous in lycra at the gym (everyone else looks flawless, right?). We all have self-doubt about something, but you can choose whether you let it ruin a perfectly good idea, an amazing business plan or a fabulous career change. You are an amazing human being and if you really want to achieve your dream this year, you can.
You’ve got 365 days to find your passion, don’t waste those days! You essentially have a blank page, so make sure you write an amazing story for 2020. You’ll be glad you did!

The Ultimate Beer Belly Buster!
New Year, New Chapter, New You?
...............................
W
eight loss treatments are often considered to be more of a female indulgence, but with the UK’s waistline everincreasing, more and more men are looking for answers outside of the gym or slimming groups. Citylife sent a willing subject to test out one of the most popular fat removal treatments at Cool Shaping Clinic, Rugeley. “As a previously fit and healthy man, who ran marathons, cycled miles and swam regularly, it is safe to say I have ‘let myself go’ a little of late. And when I say, ‘a little’ I mean I now sport about four stones’ worth of extra weight which has snuck on over the last two years. A combination of living the good life and becoming lazier, my excess fat has settled nicely round my midriff creating what one could comfortably call a ‘beer belly.’ “However I was informed that help was very much at hand in the form of Cool Shaping Clinic and I trundled off to place myself in the safe hands of salon owner, Veronica, as she gave me the treatment known as cryolipolisis, or ‘fat-freezing.’ “Both excited and apprehensive, I soon felt very much at ease in the light and airy salon, based in the stunning countryside setting of the Hawkeyard Estate, and listened incredulously as Veronica explained the science behind fat-freezing. My belly fat was going to be taken down to a temperature of -5 degrees where my fat cells would, quite literally, ‘freeze’ to death! Although the treatment itself takes only 45 minutes, the process of my cells dying and being passed through my lymphatic system,
36
then expelled by my body, could take up to six weeks, so no ‘quick fixes’ here. “Initially, cold cloths were placed on my tum to protect my skin from the machine and then, what can only be described as a bucket, was placed over my stomach and, with an almighty suck, my fat filled it to the brim! Initially uncomfortable, this feeling soon abated and I was able to relax for the rest of the treatment and read the newspaper, whilst being vaguely aware of the dropping temperature of the flab-filled bucket. “After 45 minutes, the machine was turned off, the bucket removed and my frozen wobbly bits returned to their rightful place around my middle.Veronica massaged the area to bring back a little feeling and, after promising to drink 2-3 litres of water a day and also partake in a ritual known as body brushing, I departed. “Although no initial weight loss was evident, I did begin to feel trimmer in the days that followed. I kept my promise of upping my fluid intake and I dry-brushed the treated area both morning and night. Now, several weeks later, I am aware that clothes and belts are looser and the area is feeling more than a little firmer. Needless to say, I’m already planning my next visit!”

Lichfield fitness centre run by a group of sports stars has opened up the world of boxing to groups who might have previously considered it as 'hostile' and 'intimidating'. Traditionally seen as testosterone-filled environments, boxing clubs can often be intimidating places to work out in. However, BeatBox boxing studios Lichfield, has brought boxing fitness to a wider audience by breaking down stereotypes surrounding the sport, and has seen a reversal to this often-held view, with 75% of memberships coming from female clients, even though the fitness concept is designed to make boxing accessible to all. The next-generation boxing fitness centre allows members to learn the art of boxing in a dark, party-like atmosphere, and get ‘boxing fit’ when the lights go out. Derby County goalkeeper and now BeatBox Director, Scott Carson, said: “We created BeatBox for anyone who wants to have the physique that boxing training provides, but without having to getting in to the ring to fight.” Carson, the Manchester City goalkeeper, believes the main attraction has been the novel ‘night club’ training facilities. “When you are dancing in a nightclub,” Carson explains, “you are less inhibited than if you were dancing away, fully lit in daylight. So, we thought, why would a workout be any different?” With all the facilities of a regular boxing gym, members work out in a nightclub environment, boxing in a dark area to urban music genres, such as hip-hop, rap, or house-themed classes. Join in January and receive free gloves worth £59! Book your free trial by visiting Beatbox in City Arcade, Lichfield, calling 01543 411190 or visiting www.beatboxstudios.co.uk.

Staffordshire teddy with 'amazing' WWII story sparks bidding frenzy! A
By Adrian Rathbone of Hansons Auctioneers
............................
war-weary teddy bear found in a Staffordshire loft sold for 10 times its estimate at auction as bidders fought to buy a toy with an incredible story. The battered early 20th century bear, which was used as a soldier’s pillow in an army tank and played a part in the Allies’ Victory Parade in Berlin in 1945, sparked huge interest went under the hammer at Hansons London in December. A room bidder triumphed. Kirsty Johnston, a 59-year-old retired nurse from Barnet, London, paid £4,000 for the bear – more than 10 times its low estimate of £400. She said: “I collect WW1 and WW2 bears. I have around 1,000. He’s joined a nice collection of old bears in my sitting room.” Owners Tom, 76 and Mo Matthews, 75, from Stafford, were stunned by

the result. Mo said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw the bear had sold for £4,000. I ring Hansons to check before I told Tom.” The bear, which had been languishing in their loft for 40 years, was given to Tom Matthews’ father, Thomas The new owner of the bear Kirsty Johnston. Matthews snr, in Image by Hansons Auctioneers. 1944 by a grateful school teacher in Raamsdonksveer, Holland, after British troops liberated their town during the Second World War. She was particularly grateful to Thomas, a member of the Royal Artillery’s 62nd anti-tank regiment, because he risked his life to source coal and provide heat for the people of Raamsdonksveer who enjoyed a hot bath for the first time in years. Thomas snr died in 1990 at the age of 74. Tom jnr, a retired aircraft technician from Stafford, said: “We have no children, no one to leave the bear to. I hated the thought of him ending up in a skip during house clearance.” Free valuations for all manner of toys, watches, silver, jewellery, pictures, antiques and collectables are held at the Hedgehog Inn, Stafford Road, Lichfield,WS13 8JB, every Monday, 10.30am-12.30pm, from January 6. Full of Christmas Cheer With We Love Lichfield
............................
C
hristmas came early for good causes across the district after We Love Lichfield donated thousands of pounds in grants at its special festive presentation.
The charity, which supports voluntary groups making a difference in our communities, invited recipients, civic leaders, businesses and other guests to the event in Lichfield’s George Hotel on 13th December. Thirteen voluntary groups received grants in front of a packed room of people who immediately got into the Christmas spirit courtesy of carol singing by the Lichfield Friary School Choir. The patron of We Love Lichfield, Simon Price, thanked all the fund’s advisors and went on to speak of how we owe so much to the wonderful work of volunteers. He then announced to the 100+ strong room of guests that the Fund has given away grants now on average every 10 days since it started and he invited all the beneficiaries to talk about their contribution to the district. Organisations receiving grants included: City of Lichfield Friends, King George V Memorial Scouts and Guides, Kendall and Wall Charitable Trust, Friends 2 Friends, The Lichfield Trishaw Project, Diocesan Digest Sound Magazine of Lichfield Cathedral, Clifton Campville Village Hall, Midlands Soccer Academy, Lichfield and District Talking News, Lichfield Re:Cycle, Cogs Prepares 4 Life, Curborough Community Association and Lichfield Society of Arts. The finale of the presentation was a surprise appearance by celebrity and actor Su Pollard to present a special prize. Currently starring in the Dick Whittington panto at the Wolverhampton Grand, Su shouted “hi-dehi” to the audience who, of course, responded “ho-de-ho!” Su was the special surprise guest to present a brand-new award – The We Love Lichfield Business Community Champion. Created to celebrate businesses which support the fund through donations and publicity, the inaugural award went to Richard Winterton, of Richard Winterton Auctioneers, who has so far raised over £5000.
What is We Love Lichfield?
We Love Lichfield is a local fund that provides small grants to a wide range of projects based in Lichfield District. The fund considers all applications from local groups in need twice a year. Companies and individuals are welcome to donate or fundraise and all money is invested through a permanent endowment fund by registered charity The Community Foundation for Staffordshire on behalf of We Love Lichfield in line with charity commission guidelines. The interest and dividends earned on the invested money is then distributed by the Fund as small grants across the district. The beauty of this model is that it will provide a source of on-going funding that can be used for small grants, and larger grants as the fund grows, for many years to come. The aim is by 2023 to have created enough capital to give away £50K every year for ever. For more details and to make a donation to the fund, visit www.welovelichfield.com.

Lichfield Cathedral is Fully Alive
.................................................................
W
atch out for an action-packed, funfilled year in 2020 with Lichfield Cathedral. Each year the Cathedral launches a yearly theme that is woven through every event, service, exhibition and art project. This year saw the theme ‘Journeys Through Space, Light & Time’ as the Cathedral celebrated 50 years since the first moon landing and explored the relationship between science and religion. There were free family activities; a 36-metre replica of the surface of the moon; a space-themed The Great Exhibition; a Science and Religion lecture series, plus 40,000 people involved in creating ‘A Constellation of Images’ across the West Midlands. Finally, there was a light and sound spectacular to kick-off the festive period. In 2020, Lichfield Cathedral will be celebrating, exploring and discovering what it means to be truly human and fully alive. Taking this theme, the Cathedral will be looking at what makes us human, what creates happiness and joy, how our lives change as we get older and what being ‘fully alive’ truly means. January 2020 starts with an exhibition entitled ‘Nurturing Spiritual Life’ that explores how people have nurtured their spiritual life within the Christian tradition through 1,500 years. From the early days of Christianity, where the Bible was hand copied on manuscripts in Latin, to modern times where anyone can read the Bible on their smartphones. The rest of the year promises art projects, family activities, street parties, film festivals, light shows, lectures, exhibitions and much more.
Cathedral’s Nod to Notre-Dame
Notre-Dame Cathedral was remembered this Christmas as images from its famous windows were projected across the nave of Lichfield Cathedral as an act of solidarity with the Paris landmark, and to raise awareness of the fragility of all cathedrals.

The world was shocked by the pictures of Notre-Dame, burning orange against the sky, as fire engulfed it last April. The gothic spire and roof collapsed, but remarkably many of its treasures were saved, including its two bell towers and its three Rose windows, who elements were incorporated into this year’s The Cathedral Illuminated 2019: The Beginning project by the cathedral’s Artistic Director, Peter Walker in collaboration with Luxmuralis.
