RUGELEY CHARTER FAIR 2017

Saturday 10 June 2017

D

ue to the Hagley Field Flood Relief Scheme, Rugeley Town Council along with Stokes Fun Fair has had to look at other sites within the Rugeley Parish to hold the Charter Fair. Charter Fair is based on a tradition that dates back to 1252 whereby Rugeley was granted the right to hold a fair on the vigil of St Augustine. This gradually developed in to a Horse Fair and Pleasure Fair and in 1851 it was one of the largest in Europe. In 1932 the Horse Fair ceased but the Pleasure Fair continued. To keep the tradition the Town Council has looked at many sites to hold the Saturday event and Green Lane Playing Fields came out as the best site for the event. The Fair has the rights to hold a Pleasure Fair within the Parish of Rugeley and has chosen to move with the Town Council so as to keep the traditional format.

Cannock Chase Council are supporting the event and assisting with the move along with the Police who the Town Council, District Council and Fair are working closely with.

nature of the site and as such are seeking the views of the residents.

The Fun Fair will only run three nights. These will be Thursday 08 June, 5pm - 9pm, Friday 09 June 5pm – 9pm and Saturday 10 June 12pm – 8pm. They will have security on site that will clear the field at the end of the evening of people and ensure the area is secure. On the Saturday no rides will be dismantled after 10pm and no one will be moving off the field on Sunday 11 June before 8am. The Fair will also be turning the bass down on the music as well as keeping the volume lower.

The Town Council will on Saturday 10 June be putting cones up to stop parking on Green Lane and will also barrier the Cul De Sacs either sides of the Fields to ensure no one parks outside resident’s houses and these will be marshalled so residents can access their properties. If you have any thoughts on how the arrangements can be improved please contact Rebecca Mason on 01889 574074 or finance@rugeleytowncouncil.gov.uk

A Window on the Past

Around the Market Square

As its name suggests, the Market Place (or Market Square) has for centuries played a central role in Rugeley life.Thank you to the Landor Society for these fantastic pictures of the Market Square over the last century.

1. A Victorian watercolour of the ‘Shoulder of Mutton’ which stood approximately where the clock tower now is. 2. The interior of the Market Hall in around 1970 3. The public buildings which included a market with an entrance under the clock tower, postmarked 1910. 4. Harris (ironmongers) on the corner of Market Street with the Shrewsbury Arms opposite.

5. Market day at the beginning of the twentieth century 6. A procession of children in groups – marching to St Augustine’s church perhaps? 7. Image from around the 1930s, with Tunnicliffe (bakery) and George Mason (grocers) on the left.

The Landor Society is a focus for those who wish to learn more about the history of Rugeley and its surrounding parishes. It was founded in 1953 and was named in honour of Walter Noble Landor, local and county historian, who became the Society’s first President. A Great Way to Tackle Post Christmas Clutter!

I

By Jessica Forreseter, Auctioneer and Valuer at Richard Winterton Auctioneers

t’s that time of year once again when the post-Christmas blues take over. After the celebrations and festivities of the Christmas season are over and the new year has been rung in, you may be left with a hole in your wallet and a daunting amount of crockery, cutlery and glassware to find homes for, plus a number of kindly-given but unwanted Christmas gifts. This colossal tidying-up is where the auction world can really help. If you have decided that it is time to retire the old faithful dinner service or upgrade the glassware or crockery it is an ideal opportunity to drop them down to your local auction house for them to appraise and sell on your behalf. It really couldn’t be easier, all you have to do is drop off the items you wish to sell. You will be greeted by a polite, enthusiastic member of staff who will receive your boxes of goodies (after all, every day is like Christmas in an auction house!). You will be issued with a receipt for your items and then it is over to us to work our magic. Great delight and care is taken in examining the contents of boxes and discovering all the hidden treasures. They are then displayed, catalogued and photographed ready for auction. It is at this point that any items of particular interest will be selected for entry in our next appropriate Fine Art and Collectables Sale. The next step is for a pre-sale notification to be issued to you, the vendor. This will give you a sale date, lot number, full catalogue description and guide price of your items from our team of valuers. Following the sale being put on to the internet to assure a global reach, and viewing days at the auction house, it is auction day - the day all this behind the scenes preparation leads up to. As we work on commission, we do our very best to attract every last bid out of our buyers in an attempt to realise the highest price possible. You are of course always more than welcome to attend the sale to watch your items going under the gavel and watch our auctioneers work their magic on the rostrum! Gone are the days when your items would get knocked down to a bidder in the room, you can now enjoy the experience of watching your items being bid on via telephone bids and online from far flung countries. Often we find ourselves selling to the Americas, China and Australia through the use of technological advances and online bidding platforms. Post sale, a cheque, less our charges for lotting and 15% commission plus VAT will be issued to you in the post for you to enjoy. For items that are too large to bring to the saleroom yourselves, we offer a collection service as well as a free home visitation service. For further details please do not hesitate to contact us 01543 251081 or via our website www.richardwinterton.co.uk

Dick Whittington and the Pi-Rat of The Caribbean at the Rugeley Rose Theatre

R

A review by Tom Roberts

****

eveal Theatre Company’s version of this well-travelled Christmas classic was crammed full of festive fun and frolics. High audience decibel levels mark the sign of a good panto, and it’s safe to say the noise from a very excited school audience almost raised the roof from start to finish. Great to see the youngsters engaging in a live performance in these times of computer games and TV reality shows. Panto is, after all, a wonderful introduction to the world of theatre. Sweet songs, slapstick routines, audience participation, a goodygoody fairy, a hugely frocked dame, an obligatory baddie and even a sponge fight with the audience ticked all the right boxes. I did feel for the Dame when she asked a male teacher in the audience where he would take her on a date. I’m not sure ‘Birmingham City Football Club‘ was the answer she wanted! In terms of budget, it’s a million miles from the show-biz bells and whistles of the bigger theatres, but it really doesn't matter. The young audience don’t give a monkey’s about who has been on EastEnders, they just want to laugh and be entertained. That is precisely what happens here in a simple, traditional way. Solid, entertaining fun with jokes that work for both young and not so young alike.

Rugeley opticians celebrate a decade of service

R

ugelely residents were treated to a party on Saturday 3rd December as Specsavers celebrated 10 years of business in the town centre.

Members of staff from Specsavers on Upper Brook Street invited customers and passers-by to pop in to store during the weekend for a slice of cake to mark the milestone occasion, with a face painter and balloon modeller for children, as well as goody bags and party food for all attendees.

Store director Minal Naik commented: “Ten years is quite a milestone to reach, so we had to take the opportunity to mark the occasion with many of our loyal customers. We’ve seen a lot of change over the years, including our store re-fit last year which has allowed us to continue to meet the increasing demands of our customers. We had a fantastic weekend and were delighted to welcome customers of all ages into store for a delicious slice of cake. A big thank you to everyone who helped us to celebrate our birthday.”

Specsavers first opened its doors in November 2006 with a team of six, including optical assistant Sue Reed. Sue added: “It’s been a pleasure to work at Specsavers Rugeley for the last decade. We have a

brilliant team and still see customers who have been with us since the beginning, which reflects our dedication to customer service. Here’s to the next ten years!”

The team has since grown to ten members of staff, who have 45 years of service between them.

A Sparkling Lantern Parade

R

Rugeley's Lantern Parade arrives in the town for the nativity service.

ugeley's annual Christmas Lantern Parade this year attracted over 300 youngsters and families who processed into the town for carols and to watch the switch on of the Christmas Lights. The parade was led by the Staffordshire Regimental Association's mascot Watchman V with handler Greg Hedges, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the county Mrs Barbara Hyde, the High Sherriff Colonel David Leigh and two British Legion standard bearers. Amanda Milling MP also accompanied the parade of excited torch carrying children which processed from Rugeley Leisure Centre to the town centre with each local primary school carrying an illuminated snowman and their pupils singing all the way. A count-down by the children produced a spectacular climax to the switch on of the new illuminations which brightened up the town streets for the start of Christmas season. Organised jointly by Rugeley Town Council and, recent receivers of the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, local charity Community Engagement Support Services (CESS) all youngsters were given a small present and some fruit donated by Tesco. Christmas may come but once a year but if you would like to help local causes throughout the year please contact CESS on 01889 358402 or 07734596693 or via Facebook.

A Look Back at Festive Fun in Rugeley

By Peter Fielding of Rugeley & District Lions Club

C

hristmas may be several weeks behind us now, but here Peter Fielding of Rugeley and District Lions Club highlights the fantastic work done over the Festive period, and the extraordinary generosity of Rugeley residents and businesses. Well done to everyone involved! Rugeley and District Lions were kept very busy over the Christmas period and, hopefully, made a lot of people, young and old very happy. Our Christmas Toy Appeal achieved more this year than we could have hoped. We collected over 600 parcels which were taken to The Salvation Army Christmas Toy Service to be eventually donated to needy children by Social Services. Our thanks go to our collectors at Three Wishes, Upper Brook Street; St Josephs Community Centre, Lichfield Street; Gymophobics, Market Street, Rugeley and Tesco, Rugeley. Also to the staff at Morrisons and the parishioners of St Augustine’s Church who donated toys to the appeal. A great big thank you to all of you who donated toys to make this appeal a tremendous success. Santa and his Elves were in the Grotto at Wyevale Garden Centre on Saturdays and Sundays throughout December up to Christmas, providing toys for the children or just a photo opportunity (for all ages!) in consideration of a modest donation. There were a deal of happy smiling faces and just a few tears from young children who have yet to make their minds up on who this big fellow in a red costume and white whisckers actually is! The Christmas Float, run in conjunction with Rugeley Rotary Club, was as usual a huge success. For ten nights we toured around the estates and ventured as far afield as Colton, Little Hayward, Hill Ridware and Upper Longdon with afternoons spent at Morrisons, Tesco and Aldi car parks with their kind permission. We need to thank Waymax for the use of their lorry; 50-50 Taxis for the use of their unit for building and storing of our float and The Performing Rights Society for waiving their fee for playing music in public. The Clubs would also like to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers who accompany us around, for without their help we wouldn’t be able to cover the area. We raised just under £6000 which will be split equally between the two club’s charity accounts. As usual we do thank everybody who came out, waved, cheered and donated. We all enjoy it and hope it brought a little bit of Christmas cheer to you all. For now, the club is resting and getting ready for another busy year. We have our successful Duck Race to plan and are hopeful that our Lion Hunt will again be run in the summer with the assistance of Staffordshire Search and Rescue Team. We shall aim to participate in the Rugeley Charter Fair and Brereton Carnival. If you would like to come and join in with us we can be contacted via Facebook and would give a warm welcome.

Beautiful Gifts Galore at Pretty on the Inside

retty on the Inside was opened in January 2014. After starting in the Brewery Street Shopping Centre, Rugeley, the business moved across town into larger premises at 7 Market Square. The aim was to create somewhere with unusual, fascinating stock - a mini Glastonbury with a twist. Pretty on the Inside is a great space and a comfortable shopping environment, where people can peruse a wide array of products with no pressure to purchase. After starting with a small selection of stock, the business has expanded vastly and is continually growing, with a new clothing and soft furnishings area opening in March 2017. Our beautifully scented Bathroom Heaven area, including soaps and bath bombs, is expanding, along with the ever popular Himalayan Salt collection. We have recently also added a bead and charm section for your jewellery making needs. Many handmade products are available now to order including jewellery, personalised mugs, plaques and cute fairy gardens. Orders can be placed in store, on the phone or via our Facebook page. By the end of the year we will have a website so you can order online and have goods delivered straight to your door. All the staff at Pretty on the Inside would like to thank you for your support over the last three years and we are looking forward to many more! More Memories of ‘The Palace’

A

24

n extract from the memoirs of Len Hough from the archives of the Landor Society. In the December issue we brought you the first instalment of the memories of Len Hough, who in 1984 recorded his recollections of ‘The Palace’ cinema/theatre in the early 1930s. Here we present part two of this fascinating insight. There were no double feature programmes in those days – a newsreel often ten days or a week old, then two reel comedies, Charlie Chase, Laurel & Hardy, or Slim Summerville etc. Then a travel short, or Adventures in Africa was a popular series. At the weekend (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) a serial would be shown, and of course the feature film. Cowboys were liked – Ken Maynward, Buck Jones, Richard Dix. The Ben Travers comedy farces starring Tom Walls and Ralph Lyn always did well, and of course the Broadway Musicals, some of which are now appearing on television. We also had visits by Sir Percival Heywood and his players. They would present a play on the stage, the last one being ‘Mr. Pym Passes By’, a light comedy. He brought his own staff and scenery. I had very little to do but keep the fire stoked up. These plays were well supported by the local gentry. I had by then been made second operator. Sid Smith had been promoted to Chief Operator at another cinema belonging to the circuit. We had another rewind boy, Cliff Robinson. Miss Bamfield left and I believe for a time Miss Moxon was in charge. This was not long, as many older readers will remember Mr Walter Ford, the jovial manager, an unmistakable figure with his spats and bow tie. He liked to think of himself as an entertainer. He liked nothing better than for the mains supply to fail. This would shut the film down, but we could put the house and stage lights on from the Blackstone enginedriven dynamo and he would go on stage and tell jokes and sing comic songs. It was no surprise when he decided to put on a variety show for a week. This would consist of professional acts and local amateurs. The first show was called ‘Walter Ford’s No.1 Variety Show’. Topping the bill was a ventriloquist who came on as Dick Turpin, which he was billed as - quite a good act. Among the amateurs was Joe and Tom Heatherly, the hairdressers and tobacconists from Upper Brook Street, who sang duets in

the style of Flotsam and Jetsam, a popular radio duo. Joe had the deep voice and Tom the lighter one. They were very well applauded. Billy Gilbert the cobbler and boot-shop owner from Brook Square did female impersonations. Albert Carrol, a miner, billed as the silver-toned tenor, sang solos. A very fine voice he had. Jackie Cook, son of the licensee of the Bell Inn in Market Street, a boy soprano. And of course Walter Ford himself. This show played to packed houses every night and did very well. Later he staged Variety Show No.2. This was not as successful as the first one had been chiefly because the professional acts were not very good. This was the end of the variety shows. It would be sometime in 1933 when Mr Deeming senior and his two sons Mr G. E Deeming and Mr C. K Deeming came to look round the cinema, which they purchased, and carried on with plans to build a new cinema in Horsefair. Mr Ford carried on as manager for a time, but Mr G. E. Deeming took over and raised the standard of films we were showing. ‘King Kong’ was one we had. A large plywood-backed, cut-out of King Kong was created which brought a lot of interest. Mr Deeming was a great showman and we entered things for the Hospital Carnival. We entered his car one year for the film called ‘Say It With Flowers’ – decorated the car all over with flowers. The judges told us it would have won first prize but it should have been entered in another class. Rats were prevalent at the Palace. They came from the pig sty and fowl run where I have seen as many as ten rats feeding from the fowls’ corn bowl. They would run about amongst the feet of the audience in the front

Anson Street C1920. ‘The Palace’ is the building in the centre with circular windows.

stalls feeding off the monkey-nuts dropped by patrons, as these used to be bought in large quantities from the open air market. We did not sell any sweets or chocolate. Patrons got them form Mr Rowland’s sweet shop next door. I don’t know if he had any trouble with them (rats). We could not put any poison down in case they died under the floorboards in the hall and went rotten. We would trap them in wire cage traps and drown them in the engine cooling tanks. It was the most humane way we could think of to dispose of them. I used to go to the Palace in the silent days when I was a boy. I remember well Mr Victory Fleming and his violin playing. I saw most of the silent stars – Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Jackie Coogan, Mary Pickford, to name but a few. I also remember two operas on the stage – La Boheme and Tosca. After Mr Fleming left, the Palace stood empty for a long time. Some travelling road shows tried to make a go of it on the stage but did not succeed. It was the coming of the talkies that re-opened it. I did not think I should be the one to put the locks on for the last time. As the lights went out at the Palace a lot of the life went out of Anson Street, but a new era opened for Horse Fair with the new cinema, the ‘Picture House’ as it was called then, certainly the most beautifully decorated cinema in the district with its hand-painted panels of scenes said to be of Cannock Chase, and the painted flowers cascading down from the balcony, and its superb Western Electric Wide Range Sound System, and Jessie Matthews’ musical ‘Evergreen’ was just the film to show it off. I do not think any improvement since has made such an impact.
