In some cities, the cultural calendar is bleak throughout winter, as theatres and concert venues take time off when the weather gets cold. Not Prague. As soon as the holidays pass, events in the Golden City start up in full force. You have plenty to look forward to over the next few months. Here are some of the highlights. At Prague’s theatres, you can find a performance of music, drama, and dancing just about every night, but there are some notable premieres and special events coming up that you won’t want to miss. February 19 at 8 pm you can watch the premiere of The Extraordinary Voyages of Jules Verne, at Laterna Magika theatre. This is a visually stunning production that brings Verne’s adventures to life using special effects unique to the venue. At the same theatre on February 25 at 8 pm you can see Anticodes, a performance dedicated to the life and early literary work of Václav Havel. It will give you a new point of view on this crucial Czech figure. Ballet fans are also in luck, as a new performance at The State Opera, Ballettissimo, premieres March 5 at 7 pm. This will be a tour-de-force performance by some of the country’s finest dancers and conductors, featuring the music of Mahler, Beethoven, and more. A new opera, Hansel and Gretel, premieres at The State Opera April 23 at 7 pm, offering a dramatic and contemporary take on this timeless children’s story. Gourmands can look forward to one of the culinary events of the year, as fine restaurants throughout the country participate in the Grand Restaurant Festival January 15 to February 28, offering special menus at great prices. The theme this year is discovering new tastes, highlighting local farmers, and putting a modern spin on traditional recipes. If you love whiling away an afternoon or evening in a darkened movie theatre, there will be plenty for you this season, both in the city’s art 6 – city limits – winter 2015
house cinemas and its multiplexes. Anthropofest is held January 29 to February 1 at Bio Oko, and features documentary films with the theme of social anthropology. Another big event for movie lovers is the One World Film Festival, taking place March 2 to March 11 at various cinemas throughout Prague. The focus is on international human rights documentaries. Even bigger and more exciting is Febiofest, March 19 to March 27 at Cinestar Anděl. This is one of the city’s biggest film festivals, featuring new and classic international films, incredible guests, events, and more. Two huge concerts highlight the calendar this season as well. Everyone’s favourite sweet-voiced singer, Katy Perry, will grace Prague’s premiere stadium venue, 02 Arena, February 23 at 7:30 pm. The same venue will host the inimitable duo of Paul Simon & Sting March 14 at 7:30 pm. Both shows promise to be fantastic for young and old. If you’re lucky enough to be in Prague from March 21 to April 12, you can explore some of the city’s excellent Easter markets. You’ll find these in various squares throughout the centre. Expect crafts, traditional cultural performances, and plenty of Easter sweets and treats. And if you’re trying to burn off some of the calories after all that eating, maybe you’ll want to run in — or at least watch — the Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon on March 28. It finishes on Old Town Square, where you’ll have a great view of the proceedings. Whatever your interests, you’re sure to find extraordinary events in Prague to make your stay unforgettable. restaurants guide – 7

We all know the best things come to those who wait. Where restaurants are concerned, sometimes the best things come to those who drive. At least, that’s the case with Black Dog Bar & Grill. Located just outside of Prague in Beroun, this low-key eatery has quickly earned a reputation as a worthwhile excursion for anyone looking for mouth-watering burgers that rival anything you’ll find in the city, along with comforting Mexican and Spanish cuisine. You’ll find it all here, from scrumptious tapas to nachos drizzled with cheddar cheese, to the famous Blackdog Burger, stacked with 200 grams of tender ground beef. With tasty beer on tap from the small Holba brewery, it feels like every detail has been attended to. The motto at Black Dog Bar & Grill is “Life is too short to eat bad food”. Your first bite will convince you that the owners have taken these words to heart.
Café 22 is on the south west corner of Malastrana namesti in the lesser town and prides itself on serving excellent food with delicate tastes and unique flavours from their own recipes. A wonderful location to sit on the terrace in the sring and summer watch the world go by or to dine inside and select from one of the many comtemporary dishes available from the extensive menu. Recommended is the club sanwich or the grilled steak.

If there’s one place in Prague that still maintains all the charm and traditions of the glamorous First Republic, Café Imperial is it. But the atmosphere isn’t the only thing that will impress you. The menu has an allure all its own, showcasing a compendium of the best of Czech cuisine, created by renowned chef Zdeněk Pohlreich. Dishes such as braised pig cheeks in red wine jus, and lamb shank slow-roasted with marjoram are two of the favourites. Inconspicuous from the outside, the restaurant’s interior features a stunning vista of Art Nouveau decorative tiles and mosaics, creating an environment that’s truly reminiscent of the Grand Café style.

The city’s best burger is one of the most contested categories in Prague dining. There will never be a unanimous vote, but Dish Burger Bistro is one of the most distinguished contenders. From the retro interior to the Únětický microbrew, every detail at Dish has been thought through. Nowhere is that more evident than on the menu. The Dish Burger is the most traditional, with cheddar, bacon, homemade ketchup, confited garlic aioli, pickles and lettuce. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the Piri Piri, with beef, chorizo, Spanish sheep cheese, piri piri sauce and spicy tomato salsa. Cloth napkins wouldn’t feel out of place with these burgers, but Dish’s gourmet approach doesn’t sacrifice the flavour, or the fun.
The name Divinis comes from the Latin word meaning ‘divine’. It’s an appropriate name for this gem of Italian restaurants in the heart of Old Town. Classic Italian dishes like Panzanella, Vitello Tonnato, Risotto, and Ossobuco are prepared with all the love and care you would expect from a real Italian grandmother. Chef Jan Kratochvíl has adopted a traditional approach to modern diners. Using only the freshest authentic ingredients, he creates mouth-watering dishes that will impress even the most demanding gourmands. His attention to detail, combined with the restaurant’s cosy atmosphere, attentive service and first-class Italian cuisine, have earned Divinis the coveted Bib Gourmand.

The name CottoCrudo means “cooked and raw”. It’s a simple phrase that captures the essence of this chic Italian restaurant in the Four Seasons. Executive Chef Luca De Astis is passionate about fine food, and each dish here is heightened by his modern touch. You can feast at CottoCrudo, but it’s also a fantastic place for a cocktail, or a glass of wine and some gourmet antipasti. The lunch and dinner menus change seasonally, and the drink list is always impressive. If you come for a tipple, try the 50 Special, with Stolichnaya, limoncello, lychee and fresh ginger. For dinner, start with a plate of mouth-watering charcuterie, then let the chef suggest a fresh seafood or pasta dish.
If you are looking for somewhere with a good vibe all day, from breakfast until dinner then try CP 1 Café, close to the Bethlehem chapel at Konvikstka 24. They bake fresh croissants every morning, serve a full English breakfast and have a lovely outdoor terrace in the Old Town that remains popular all day long. Enjoy a cold beer or a chilled glass of wine with the fine selection of tapas also on offer. This is a great place to sit and unwind after a long day of sightseeing.

Great Japanese cuisine is a Zen-like experience, with pure flavours and the simple textures of perfectly fresh, authentic ingredients proportioned and combined with artful precision. Hanil has fine Japanese and Korean recipes down to a menu of masterpieces. It’s a Prague institution. Hanil has recently undergone a tasteful reconstruction, so its interior – modelled on a traditional Japanese sushi bar – is more elegant than ever, with a stripped-down naturalism that puts the focus on the cuisine. The main attraction is the delicious array of masterfully prepared sushi, with white tuna maki and salmon roe being particularly notable favourites. But the menu also includes hearty hot dishes from Japanese and Korean recipes, including classics like spicy Bibimbap, flavourful soups, and beef teriyaki. Complement your meal with a pot of green tea, a Japanese beer, or a glass of sake for a total Asian indulgence.

Not long ago, ordering a vegetarian dinner in Prague would get you a plate of beige fried cheese and bland boiled potatoes at best, and chicken salad at worst. Those days are over, thanks to restaurants like Estrella, which takes an eclectic, flavourful approach to innovative vegetarian and vegan cuisine. From hearty veggie burgers to comforting soups, vegetarian sushi and everything in between, Estrella changes its menu seasonally, so a lunch or dinner here is always full of scrumptious surprises. Whilst you’re poring over the menu, enjoy a crisp local microbrew or a glass from their impressive wine list. “Estrella” is Spanish for “star”, and this restaurant has quickly become one of the stars of vegetarian dining in the Golden City.

If you’re coming for dinner, try to get a seat in the back dining room, where tiny lights stud the ceiling, offering a relaxing, romantic ambience. Many consider Terasa U Zlaté studně one of the finest restaurants in the country, and it’s easy to see why. The views of Malá Strana are stunning, but the real attraction is Executive Chef Pavel Sapík’s world-class cuisine. Chef Sapík’s speciality is a mouth-watering Royal Steak from Argentinean Angus served with Foie Gras Rougié, potato purée with Piedmont truffle, and an incredible sauce from Sauternes Baron Philippe de Rothschild. But dinner isn’t the only reason to visit U Zlaté studně. It’s also a great place for an elegant afternoon. There’s a fantastic wine list and a knowledgeable Sommelier who’s happy to suggest the perfect glass. Before leaving, don’t miss the private entrance to the beautiful Prague Castle gardens!

Imagine a neighbourhood bar with a tap at every table serving fresh, frothy Pilsner. That’s The Pub. It’s a beer lover’s dream. This is a great place to have a beer (or six) with a big plate of hearty pub food. They do tasty interpretations of Czech classics, like confit duck leg fried in breadcrumbs and served with pumpkin spaghetti. You’ll also find timeless dishes like goulash, and there’s a serious selection of burgers. The biggest draw is the beer though, and for good reason. The Pub serves unpasteurized Pilsner, so it’s as fresh as can be. And, with self-service taps and a tally onscreen, you can turn your evening into an international drinking contest, competing with branches of The Pub throughout Europe.
Don’t be surprised to find at least one tour bus parked in front of U Fleků at any time of day or night. The tables here are always jammed, and the rollicking accordion music can be heard halfway down the block. Most people come for the dark U Fleků lager, and the bar pours more than 800 litres every day. The only brewery in Central Europe to brew without interruption for the past 500 years, U Fleků is a place of pilgrimage for beer drinkers, and they serve the hearty Czech cuisine that goes perfectly with pints. This is one of the truly original Czech pubs.

For meat lovers, there’s no mistaking great beef. It has to be perfectly prepared, but above all, it must be sourced from a fine breed. That’s exactly what you’ll find at U Bílé krávy. The name of the restaurant means “at the white cows”, referring to cows from the French town of Charolais, which produce some of the world’s best beef. Don’t let the laid-back atmosphere fool you; the chefs here are very serious about beef. They’ll provide all the information about your meal, from the name of the breeder to the cow’s age. Following traditional methods of breeding, ageing and butchering ensures that every dish at U Bílé krávy is delicious, from Entrecôte to a Beef Bourguignon that will have you licking your plate.
The land of the Rising Sun has an honoured gastronomic tradition of precision, perfection, and clarity. That’s exactly what Yamato has achieved, in dishes that cross the culinary spectrum from light bites to hearty feasts. Japanese traditions and customs inform every element of this restaurant, from the appealing interior of clean lines and tasteful décor to the menu, which evokes the flavour of Japan through elegant simplicity and fresh flavours. It’s a pleasure to watch Chef Marek Hora as he skilfully prepares dishes as eclectic as sushi, roast duck with orange miso, and beef with Japanese peppers. Complete your Far East experience with a glass of sake or Japanese whiskey, and you’ll be on a tasty journey to Asia.

The National Gallery in Prague presents an exhibition of one of the founding figures of modern European art – the painter and engraver William Hogarth. The artist cannot go unmentioned in any history of Western art, as he laid the foundations for modern caricature. The main theme of his oeuvre is formed by urban society and its vices, such as alcoholism, crime and punishment, as well as 18th century London – all topics still relevant today. For the first time, the National Gallery in Prague is dedicating an exhibition to Hogarth’s work. The exhibition is accompanied by a monograph which surveys the subsequent influence of Hogarth’s work both in the Czech Lands and abroad.

AUSTRIAN AND GERMAN ART OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY Sternberg palace Hradčanské náměstí 15, 118 00 Praha 1, Hradčany 20 August 2014–29 March 2015 Daily except Monday 10:00–18:00
The exhibition Austrian and German Art of the Second Half of the 19th Century – Part II presents another brilliant set of German and Austrian artworks from the Collection of 19th-century Art. The presentation includes work by artists such as Friedrich von Amerling, Hans Makart, Mihály Munkácsy, Hans Canon, Franz von Lenbach, Adolph von Menzel, Gabriel Max, Wilhelm Leibl and many others. The open, cosmopolitan society of the second half of the 19th century in the lands of the Austrian Empire (the AustroHungarian monarchy after 1867) and in Germany created favourable conditions for fine arts to develop. Artists often travelled not only to study at the Academies in Vienna, Munich, Berlin or Düsseldorf, but also to live and work in large art centres. Art was gradually liberated from established stereotypes and became an open platform where new themes and modes of expression were sought to enrich the traditional ones. The Austrian and German paintings on display focus on figural painting of the second half of the 19th century, presenting its many genres including the art of portraiture. Monumental historical themes and scenes from real life representing both the socio-critical genre and dramatic moments in life were especially popular. Canvasses with spiritism and occultism motifs became a contemporary phenomenon. Historism, which was highly in-demand and widespread at the time, translated themes of worldly society; popular themes included rendezvous in gardens or lavishly furnished interiors. Portraits based on the lateBiedermeier tradition moved in the direction of realism. Some artworks highlighted the portrait’s representative and social functions, while others were psychological studies or private sketches.

vyšehrad Quiet, scenic, and visually stunning, with a gorgeous spired cathedral, an historic cemetery, and breath-taking views over the river, Vyšehrad is one of Prague’s hidden architectural and cultural gems. While it is smaller than Prague Castle, Vyšehrad has plenty to recommend it, starting with its location, just off the tourist path. It also boasts a rich history stretching back to the very origins of Prague. Many claim it was the site of the city’s first settlement. This is where the legendary ruler Libuše prophesied the glory of Prague, founding the city and the Přemyslid dynasty. In the heart of the fortifications sits the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, which was founded in 1070, though the current building dates to 1885. Inside, the walls are adorned with paintings from the 16th century, and brilliant frescoes in the style of Czech Art Nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha, who happens to be buried outside. The colourful mosaic above the entrance is eye-catching, as are the basilica’s distinctive hollow towers, which mark its presence on the right bank of the Vltava south of Charles Bridge. Hugging the cathedral and highlighted by the magnificent Slavín tomb from the end of the 19th century, Vyšehrad Cemetery is not to be missed. Prague’s metaphorical Westminster Abbey, this is the resting place of some of the most significant figures of Czech culture, including the composer Bedřich Smetana, and the poet Vítězslav Nezval, along with numerous actors, musicians and artists like Alphonse Mucha. A memorial colonnade borders the cemetery, and each grave is uniquely designed. It’s a great place to catch your breath, especially if you’ve climbed the hill. Nested atop a cliff on the edge of the river, Vyšehrad is positioned at the perfect vantage point, and must have 58 – city limits – winter 2015
been difficult to attack — good attributes for a castle. But that means you’ll have to do a bit of walking to get there. Don’t worry, the view alone makes it more than worthwhile. There are numerous observation points around the perimeter (as well as a refreshing beer garden). Looking south, you’ll see the cliffs of Barrandov, named for the 19th century French archaeologist Joachim Barrande, who studied its fossil-rich soil. To the north, you’ll have a picture-perfect view over the river to Prague Castle, as well as the atmospheric railroad bridge and the iconic Staropramen brewery in Smíchov. To get there, you could walk through the impressive Brick Gate and up the winding cobblestone path. There’s also a paved walkway leading up from the Výtoň tram stop. If you’re not in the mood for a hike, take Metro C to the Vyšehrad stop, and you’ll approach the castle on level ground. Along the way, don’t miss the Rotunda of St. Martin, which dates from the 11th century, making it Prague’s oldest building. Closer to the basilica, you’ll find several sculptures, including one of a prophesying Libuše. Keep an eye out for the mysterious Devil’s Column, three carved stones leaning against each other. According to legend, they were thrown down in disgust by the Devil after losing a bet with a priest who wagered he could say Mass faster than the Devil could bring a column from Rome to Vyšehrad. With a little help from St. Peter, the priest managed the task, much to the chagrin of the Devil, who was apparently not a good loser.

Czech beer The history of The history of beer in the Czech Republic The tradition of brewing beer in the Czech Republic may already have brought the Slavs, when migration of Nations was happening. Beer has been brewed in monasteries from the beginning, also hopswere cultivated there. The first mention of beer in the Czech Republic comes from the year 993, when a Czech Bishop Vojtech built a Benedictine monastery in Brevnov and started to brew the beer there. In the medieval period brewing beer was under the development of the towns. In the 13th century first legal stan dards are applied . Later the nobility also wants the right to brew the beer, and numbers of disputes are taking place. This is solved by the Treaty of Saint Wenceslas in 1517, which repeals the monopoly on beer brewing by burghers. The end of 18th century was under the influence of the teachings of brew master FrantisekOndrejPoupe and his successors. They changed brewing to rational production activity. An important moment in the Czech brewing industry was foundation of the Burgher brewery in Pilsen (today’s Prazdroj) in the 1842. The beer was bottom fermented and was of very good quality and has become an ideal model for other breweries. An important milestone was the cancellation of the “propinacni” right in 1869, which restricts the creation of new breweries. This started a golden era of the Czech brewing industry, which lasted until the Second World War. After the war, many breweries have closed have not been resumed their activity. During the Communist regime, only 2 new breweries were built. In recent years, there is a great renaissance of beer, associated with the opening of new regional breweries and mini breweries. Also the diversity of beer production is extended. Nowadays there is already about 250 Brewer ies of all sizes in Czech Republic.
