SHELBY COUNTY SENIOR PICNIC MAY 19 The Shelby County Senior Picnic will be held in Alabaster this year at the Alabaster Senior Center. The event will take place on Thursday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is expected to draw a large number of seniors from around the county. "It is a large event," said Senior Activities Manager Alicia Walters. "So they'll set up a large tent outside with a stage for the dignitaries and the entertainment." According to Walters, the Shelby County Senior Picnic
is an annual event that changes locations each year. This year, Alabaster was selected to host the gathering. "Shelby County puts it on, and they change venues each year," said Walters. "It's open to seniors in the Shelby County area, and it's a free event. They serve a meal. There's usually live entertainment. There's a variety of vendors and a lot of fun stuff." The picnic itself will take place outside the senior center, but the building will still be open so that visitors
can access the restrooms or take a tour of the new facility. Guests will also be able to enjoy the Buck Creek Trail. "We should have some golf carts and things to show off our beautiful Buck Creek Trail," said Walters. "There's a variety of activities. It's just a fun day that Shelby County does to show its appreciation for its senior adults in the community." For more information, visit the City of Alabaster website at www.cityofalabaster.com.

EASTER SEALS RAISES FUNDS AT VETS PARK EVENT Easter Seals of the Birmingham Area held its annual "Walk With Me" fundraiser at Veterans Park on April 2, and organizers said they were very happy with the turnout. "It went really well," said Kelli Keith, the director of marketing and development for Easter Seals. "We had about 300 walk participants, and we raised $66,000 with money still coming in, which is typically the way it happens. Money will trickle in typically through mid-summer." This year's event, which was the fifth annual "Walk With Me" fundraiser, also included a new 5K run. "We added a 5K this year, and we had almost 150 runners, which for a first 5K is just unbelievable. We got a
lot of good feedback about the course and the run times. I think because the course was so flat, people were very excited that their times were faster than normal," said Keith. According to Keith, the 5K course was entirely con-

frings@cityofalabaster.com I want to begin this month by congratulating all of our high school and college graduating seniors! I am very proud of all your hard work over the years and I want to wish each of you the happiest and brightest future. Each year I remind our graduates that you will face many new opportunities and challenges whether you are continuing your education or starting a career. I hope that you will take time to reflect on the values and knowledge that you have acquired over the years as these present themselves in the years to come. Never forget your roots and that you have friends and family that love and support you even though you may be miles away. You may be saying to yourself “Here we go again” with the news of a possible new school system study. You may be asking why in the world we would want to even consider this option at this point in time or didn’t we get the answer from the last study. These are great questions and I would like to address some of the facts. The previous study was conducted approximately six years ago by an independent consultant. In short, the study stated that Alabaster was large enough and sufficient funding was generated in the area to have a city school system at the same quality of the current Shelby County system. It further stated that we would need to increase funding if we wanted a system that offered more opportunities for students in academics and extracurricular activities. At the time, we decided to try to work with the existing county system through additional funding. We funded tutoring, computers, smart boards, paid for garbage service, supplied resource officers, provided fire safety training, built restrooms at the football field, provided classroom money and more. While this did assist our schools, it really was not enough to make large changes to the education process. It rather kept us from getting further behind as the economy and traditional funding decreased. The school system issue is something that I am very torn over. Our county system is probably the best in the state. We have great teachers, administrators, and staff. The county faces many challenges with funding and the fact is that they must do their best in approximately 39 schools and not just those in Alabaster. That makes it difficult to add new units or classes and forces the county policy of no money for sports facilities. They are not being mean spirited but rather trying to use their funds in the best way and spread them as evenly as possible. They would be reluctant to add new teaching units based on city funding due to the fact that if that funding went away and the teacher had tenure, Shelby County would have to continue the funding. This would be a definite budget wrecker for the system and makes the addition of extra teaching units and curriculum difficult. If Alabaster begins a city school system, we would get control of all of the existing county property in our city limits, retain all current faculty, administrators, and staff with tenure and state retirement, and most funding that is currently generated in Alabaster for the schools. This needs to be understood because someone is already telling teachers that their careers are at risk and this is just not a true fact. If we began our own system, I believe that it only needs to be done if we can make it a better system and if the majority of you want the system formed. Improving the system will require more funding and that is a decision that each and every one of you must decide for yourself. I expect that we will have several public meetings just to listen. I would like to hear from you no matter which option you believe is the best one for Alabaster. If you will let me know your thoughts and why you believe as you do, it will help all of us formulate the right course for our city. Thank you!
mcclain@cityofalabaster.com They say April showers bring May flowers, and that’s true especially along the Buck Creek Trail. Recently there have been a number of Wild Lillies in bloom along with other wildflowers along the trail. Also, big turtles have been spotted resting on logs in the creek which is a very good sign. A beaver working on a dam and a foraging bunny rabbit were also spotted on the trail. If you haven’t taken the trail recently, it’s a great way to enjoy nature right here in the city. With the great weather, there’s been a lot of activity in the city. The National Curly Dog show was held and was a great success. We welcome these visitors to our city and hope you had a wonderful time. I know everyone had a great time at the Easter Egg hunt, which is always fun. Speaking of the outdoors, our big annual outdoor party is CityFest, which is bigger than ever this year featuring country music star Craig Morton. It should be a great show and a great time. Make plans to be at Municipal Park on Saturday June 4th. You and your family will have a wonderful time. Another great outdoor activity is the Senior Picnic, which will be held in Alabaster this year at the Alabaster Senior Center. The event will take place on Thursday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is expected to draw a large number of seniors from around the county. There will be all sorts of activities and fun. If you’re a senior or know someone who is, be sure to let them know! The Walk with Me event at Vets Park was a great success with the 5K run, then a general walk for everyone. It was a great time for a great cause. We welcome the teams and families of the ACCC Softball Tournament, which we are proud to host May 6-8. This should be a great time for everyone and another event which helps our city businesses. While we’re talking about being outdoors, let’s don’t forget that Movies in the Park will begin Friday, June 10, at Veterans Park and conclude on July 22. They’ll be showing a variety of family films that you can enjoy by bringing a blanket or lawn chairs and sitting out under the stars. It’s a great family outing. Speaking of families, May means Mother’s Day. So let’s take time to honor the Moms in our lives that work so hard to take care of the family.

Our school system is currently a major topic of conversation among Alabaster residents. Certain options are being seriously considered by the City Council to ensure the planning for our schools is in the best interest of our children, residents, and the future of our city. If you have any questions or comments regarding this issue, please feel free to contact me. I am continuing to work with the Abatement Board to resolve the problem of abandoned structures throughout Alabaster. As you know, several of them are in Ward 1. I truly appreciate your patience as this difficult issue is addressed. Alabaster CityFest is scheduled for Saturday, June 4. More than 60,000 people are expected to attend and volunteers are needed to make this another successful event! If you are interested in volunteering, please go to www.alabastercityfest.com. The Easter Seals "Walk With Me" event at Veteran's Park raised thousands of dollars that will make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities. More than half of the funds raised will go to children in Shelby County who are receiving therapy. Thank you to everyone who walked for such a wonderful cause. Blessings, Sophie

I am looking forward to a May with MANY flowers after the showers of April. The Park and Rec team has been making sure that comes true. To see what I mean, head out to one of our parks this month and enjoy the beauty with your family. Thanks to all the P&R team for all they do for all of us. There has been much hoopla about discussions the council has had recently regarding the Shelby County schools in Alabaster. Lest this get blown out of proportion, please understand we are investigating ideas by which we will be able to optimize help to our students. There is absolutely no animosity between us and the school board. If increasing our support for the board (we already provide free resource officers, pay for all trash removal and make classroom/equipment donations annually) is the best course of action, so be it. If looking at forming a city school system down the road when we are able to afford it is the best course of action, so be it. We want to do whatever is in our power to upgrade our schools and their facilities. The Alabaster Sports and Entertainment Foundation has already moved forward regarding athletic facilities, and to them I am truly grateful. The bottom line is simply this: We are told by the voters to spend tax money for the best use. Is there a better use than the future of our children and the quality of life here? Stay tuned for more exciting developments.... Finally, Happy Easter. He is risen. Grace and peace, Bob

It has been a busy Spring. You have probably heard that we are looking at a new study of our schools in the Alabaster area. Our first step is to see what the numbers say and then determine where we go from there. I believe Alabaster is the largest city in the state outside of Mobile and Prattville that does not have a city system. I think it is only prudent that we continue to look at the best interest of our children. That may or may not lead us to a city system, but it would seem like a good idea to make sure, whether it is county or city run, we are offering the very best for our residents. I encourage you to stay informed and please contact any of your city representatives with questions or for information. CityFest is next month and promises to once again be a great showcase for our city and more importantly the local business community which makes this all happen. The Alabaster Arts Council, whom are all volunteers, works very hard to make this event happen every year. I want to thank Regions Bank, Vic Smith CPA, Ernest McCarty Ford, CBS 42, 102.5 The Bull, AL.Com, The Alabaster Reporter, Coca-Cola, Allied Wastes and all of our sponsors that make this happen. Happy May! Thanks to the Alabaster Arts Council and the tireless work of its volunteers, CityFest is one again shaping up to be the best FREE event in the state. If you have never attended you really owe it to yourself to come this year. Beside great music there will be food, vendors and plenty of FREE rides for the kids. I look forward to seeing you there. Make plans to attend today. Last month we enjoyed the annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by Westwood Baptist Church. Again, such a great family event would not be possible without the help of countless volunteers and Park & Rec department. Thanks also go out to our Public Safety and Public Works employees for their quick and decisive work following the tornado that swept through our city last month. We are truly blessed to live in a city that invests in its resident's safety and is family friendly. May 8th is Mother's Day - take your Momma out to eat at one of our local restaurants, I am sure she deserves it. Keep in Touch!

I hope that everyone has had a tremendous start to Spring! I know that the staff at our Parks and Rec Department have been extremely busy with spring sports in full swing. If you have time, please come out and enjoy our Parks and maybe catch a baseball/softball game or a soccer match. Our Staff does a great job of providing our kids an excellent opportunity to play. In recent newsletters numerous council members have discussed the topic of conducting a feasibility for an Alabaster City School System. I have had the opportunity to meet with many Board of Education Leaders, our area Principals, a person that conducts feasibility studies as well as spend a lot of time researching City School Systems. There is a lot to consider when an opportunity like this is brought before you. I encourage all City residents to to put thought into what it would take for Alabaster to offer a "Second to None" educational experience for our children. Lastly Alabaster CityFest is right around the corner. Please make sure that you have this tremendous event on your schedule.

I know I talk about Zoning issues a lot but that's just how I roll (sadly enough). Last year we totally revamped the Subdivision Regulations, in part to correct the process for building roads in subdivision. In March, the Planning and Zoning Board approved some changes to the Zoning regulations and recommended them to the Council. If you remember, we changed the entire Zoning document in 1999. We have made several "tweaks" to it over the years. The proposed change is more of another "tweak" than a full blown revision. We look at issues where we receive a lot of requests for a variance. If a lot of people want a variance from the same thing, there must be a problem with the ordinance itself, so we look at revising it to hopefully make it work better as written. Potentially the biggest change is in the sign ordinance. The primary effect would be on businesses. If you look at a lot of local news, you'll notice signs always cause issues for a city. A lot of lawsuits are filed over signs. For Alabaster, we have to choose something that will not put new businesses at a disadvantage from what's been in place for 50 years. As with any change, we try to make it better than it was and better for the city in the long run.

Lt. Pat Conn has been with the Alabaster Fire Department now for ten years. One of the best things about it, he said, is simply being able to help people in the community. “I enjoy helping other people,” said Conn. “I like the fact that we have an opportunity to directly impact people’s lives in a tangible way that you can see. If we go out and someone has a broken arm or broken leg and we’re able to help them, you get a good feeling from being able to help.” Conn is a company officer at Fire Station No. 3, which means he oversees a team that responds to various types of emergencies around the city. “I have three guys that work directly under my supervision,” said Conn. “We respond to medical emergencies, fires, wrecks, that sort of thing.” According to Conn, the crew includes an apparatus operator, which is the one who drives the truck, plus two firefighters and himself.
In his particular shift, three of the four are also paramedics. “We all have EMS training,” said Conn, “but three of us on this particular shift at this station are also paramedics.” These days, most of the emergency calls pertain to some form of medical emergency. “Probably 80 percent of what we do are EMS calls,” said Conn. “Over the years, the Fire Department’s become kind of a catchall. Initially it started out as fires only, but probably since the ‘70s it’s become a lot more. We do things like Hazmat response, technical rescues, rope rescues, confined spaces, all those types of things. And it evolves. There’s more and more that we do as the years go on.” Before joining the Alabaster department Conn worked for five years in Birmingham. Prior to that he volunteered for the fire department in Montevallo, which is also where he went to college.
“I had started volunteering with the department there, and I was like, I wonder if I can make a career out of this,” said Conn. “I put myself through paramedic school, while I worked another job. I did that for about a year and a half, and then I was fortunate enough for the city of Birmingham to hire me.” When he’s not at the fire station, Conn enjoys spending time with his family, which includes his wife, Amy, and three kids, Ruston, Brett, and Cara. His youngest, Cara, 3, has Down’s syndrome, so that sometimes requires provid-

MAKING IT HAPPEN... BUFFALO WILD WINGS GRILL & BAR For many restaurants across the country, the nation's sluggish economy has meant slower traffic these days, but for Alabaster's Buffalo Wild Wings, the customers have just kept on coming. On April 23, the restaurant celebrated its fiveyear anniversary in Alabaster, and according to Manager Tim Spencer, it's been a very successful run. "We opened April of '06," said Spencer. "It's been going great. We've seen increases every year. We're really, really happy with the business." Part of that success stems from the value that Buffalo Wild Wings offers its customers. The restaurant offers reasonable prices on hot wings, sandwiches, drinks and even kids' meals. "We cater to a crowd that can come in and get more value for their money, where they can drink a beer and eat some wings and not be out a ton of money," said Spencer. For those who haven't tried Buffalo Wild Wings, their specialty is no doubt
One of the other great features of the restaurant is its commitment to giving customers a fun, casual dining experience. There are seven large-screen projection TVs and nearly 50 flat-screen TVs. ACCC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT MAY 6-8 The Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) softball tournament is returning to Alabaster again this year for its annual state tournament. The tournament is scheduled to begin Friday, May 6 and run through Sunday, May 8. It will be held at Veterans Park and feature some of the state's top collegiate softball talent. Last year's winner, Wallace State-Hanceville, finished second in the nation at the National Junior College Athletic Association Softball National Championship, and the Wallace State coaching staff was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Coaching Staff of the Year. The squad finished the year
New Patient Special, Exam and Xrays for
62-9 and placed three players on the Louisville Slugger/NFCA AllAmerican Team. Alabaster has proven to be a great fit for the collegiate tournament as it offers an excellent combination of facilities and location. "I think we're in a good location as far as all the teams traveling to the area. We're pretty much centrally located, and also the area in general has a lot to offer," said Parks and Recreation Director Ricky Nance. In past years, the ACCC tournament has started on Saturday, but this year the games will begin on Friday, with a kickoff banquet to be held on Thursday, May 5 at Meadow View Elementary. The changes should help facilitate travel plans for the
fans and teams that will be traveling to Alabaster for the event. "We've got games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday now, so it's basically a weekend tournament," said Nance. According to Nance, this is the last year of the current hosting agreement, so it's unknown whether Alabaster will host the tournament again in the future. "It comes up for bid again in June," said Nance. The ACCC is comprised of 22 different colleges from around the state, including Jefferson State, Central

Rake your lawn to get rid of dead growth, stray leaves, twigs and winter debris and let light and air to the soil level, encouraging the grass to grow.
•Re-seed bare or damaged patches of lawn. Scratch up the soil with a rake first. Mix a shovel of soil with a couple of scoops of grass seed and spread in the patch you're fixing. Rake level and keep wellwatered until seeds germinate and the new grass establishes.

NATIONAL DOG SPECIALTY EVENT A BIG SUCCESS The Parks & Recreation Department hosted the Curly-Coated Retriever Club of America National Specialty this April, and according to organizers, the event was a tremendous success. "The city has just really embraced this, and it couldn't be better," said Buck Buchanan, the chair for the event. "I've had a great time and everybody has loved the city of Alabaster. Everybody said that this was the best specialty they may have been to in 20 years." Curly-coat owners literally traveled from all over the country to participate in the five-day event, which included two days at Veterans Park and one day at Limestone Park.
"We've got people here from Alaska. We've got some folks here from Sweden. We've got folks here from south Florida, New York, Minnesota. The whole of North America has come to Alabaster," said Buchanan. The curly-coated retriever is an uncommon breed that's distinguished by the small, tight curls in its coat. Buchanan, who is also a veterinarian at the Airport Veterinary Hospital in Calera, said that he's owned curly-coats since the early '90s. "He loves this breed," said his wife Connie, who also oversaw the hospitality for the event. The turnout for the specialty included approximately 80 curly-coated

ALABASTER HOSTS SPECIAL OLYMPICS Larry Simmons Stadium in Alabaster was the site of the Shelby County Special Olympics Track and Field event on Friday, April 8. Special athletes gathered from all over Shelby County to participate in a range of athletic competitions including wheelchair races and the softball throw. "It went great," said Shelby County Adaptive PE teacher Valinda Pate. "It was probably our best year ever." The event drew about 200 participants from over 30 Shelby County Schools. "It is so inspirational to see the faces on these kids when they participate in this event," said State Sen. Cam Ward of Alabaster. "This once a year program shines the light on so many beautiful people in our community." Alabaster Parks and Recreation staff lent their
support to the event, providing assistance with the audio system and donating inflatables for the kids. "We assisted on the setup and things like that," said Alicia Walters, the Therapeutic Recreation Manager with the Parks and Recreation Department. "We helped with tents and trashcans, just some of the initial setup, and then with the cleanup and the teardown at the end." LOCAL MARINE SERVING IN AFGANISTAN These days many military families are experiencing what it's like to have a loved one serving overseas, and Alabaster families are no exception. One such family is the Kabcenel family, whose son Ryan is currently serving in Afghanistan with the United States Marine Corps. Ryan, a former student at Thompson High School, is the son of Andrew and Debra Kabcenel of Alabaster. His wife Adrian and one-year-old son Dillon also live in Alabaster. Ryan joined the Marines in January of 2010 and has since risen to the rank of lance corporal. His mother
Debra said that serving in the military was always something that Ryan wanted to do. "He's always wanted to be in the Marine Corps," said Debra. "He wanted to serve his country. It's also a steady income. So he joined for lots of different reasons, but he's always wanted to do this." After serving stateside for a year, Ryan was deployed to Afghanistan this past January. "He's doing good," Debra said. "But his job is pretty intense. It is combat." Having a loved one overseas is a point of pride for military families, but it can also be stressful. "The military is wonder-
ful, but it's a whole different life," said Debra. "We do a lot of praying." Thanks to Lance Cpl. Kabcenel for his service and to all of Alabaster's military families who are sacrificing for our country's freedoms.

GOING GREEN Outdoor activities are on the increase with this beautiful spring weather. Our activities include baseball and soccer games, cook outs, yard work, and washing the family car. As we enjoy these activities, it is easy to take a few simple steps to save costs and reduce negative impacts on the environment. Please consider trying some of the following: •Wash your car on a pervious surface to prevent soap and other chemicals from directly entering our streams and creeks. If the wash- water from your car can flow to your lawn, you save cost by using the same water for the car wash and your lawn. •Always use a hose nozzle with an automatic shut-off so that you only allow water to flow when you need it. Do not allow water to flow on the ground while you scrub the car. Only turn it on to rinse.
•Only use the quantity of chemicals that is required to maintain your lawn. Excess chemicals and fertilizers waste money and damage the environment. •Never apply herbicide and pesticide sprays on days with heavy winds. The over-spray may damage adjacent plants and contaminate areas that should not receive sprays. •Try to purchase local produce. This supports local farmers and reduces fuel usage. •Compost your yard trimmings and save valuable space in our landfills. These are just a few ideas for you to consider this summer. Look at your daily routine and see how many additional ways you can find to become a little greener.
EASTER SEALS RAISES FUNDS (CON’T FROM PAGE 3) success over the years in providing much-needed financial assistance to the Easter Seals local pediatric clinic. "All of the proceeds raised go back into our pediatric therapy clinic, which provides occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy for children with disabilities. What makes us different is that we accept Medicaid, which most places don't, and then we also have a sliding-fee pay scale for the underinsured or uninsured," said Keith. "We have what's called charity care, which we spend about $180,000 a year on, and all the money that's raised there goes into that charity care. So parents

NATIONAL DOG EVENT SUCCESS (CON’T FROM PAGE 16) have never been here before," said Nance. "This was just a good event that was different than anything we've ever had, even different from Bark in the Park." The specialty was organized each day by different events. For example, on Tuesday, a variety of breeds participated in the agility trials, which featured a series of hurdles and bridges for the dogs to traverse. The final day featured the breed competition, which was judged by veteran show judge Houston Clark. "He's one of the most respected dog show judges in the world," said Buck. "They fly him all over the world for shows."
Following the show, the club had a closing banquet at Timberline Golf Course, which featured an auction, raffle and plenty of Southern cuisine. "The week has gone great," said Buck. "I couldn't be happier."

MATURE COMEDY JUNE 3-12 South City Theatre Laughter on the presents “Laughter On The 23rd Floor” by Neil Simon 23rd Floor [Mature Audiences Only] directed by Dianne Daniels June 3-12 Another gem from perennial favorite Neil Simon, Laughter on the 23rd Floor was inspired by Simon's early career experience as a junior jokesmith for Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, where Simon worked with an all-star writing team, which included Sid Caesar, Larry Gelbart, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Selma Diamond and Woody Allen. The play focuses on Max Prince, the star of a weekly comedy-variety show circa 1953, and his staff, including Simon's alter-ego Lucas Brickman, who maintains a
running commentary on the writing, fighting, and wacky antics which take place in the writers' room. At the plot's core is Max's ongoing battles with televisions executives who fear his humor is too sophisticated for 1950’s middle America. (Includes mature language) Tickets are $15. Student, senior and groups of 10 or more are $12. South City Theatre is located at 109 Cloverdale Drive off Hwy 31 just past the Snow Down Shopping Center and across from the Saginaw Post Office. Simple Print Making Class: Monoprinting is a technique in which a single print is made from a single design. It differs from the relief block printing in which multiple prints can be produced. A design will be painted onto a flat surface using acrylics, watercolors, water soluble inks or crayons. There are many variations on how to make a monoprint. When the design is painted onto the flat surface, such as Plexiglas, it is transferred to art paper. The result is soft and a different approach to making art. This is a fun and easy print process.
