THS WARRIOR FOOTBALL TEAM READY FOR SEASON It may still feel like summer, but the fall football season is already right around the next corner. In August, the Thompson High School Warriors will kick off the 2011 football campaign with a home jamboree against Wetumpka on Thursday, Aug. 18, before beginning the regular season on the road against Stanhope Elmore on Friday, Aug. 26. This year, the Warriors will be under the leadership of brand new Head Coach Caleb Ross. Ross arrived at Thompson earlier this year after serving as the offensive coordinator at Prattville High School. A 2002 graduate of Samford University, Ross brings an impressive coaching resume to the job. During the five seasons he was at Prattville the team won three straight state championships (2006-2008), which has Warrior fans excited about the potential he brings to the Thompson program. “If the future’s as bright as it looks like it could be with him taking the helm, I feel like we’re going to be a great team,” said Mike Franklin, the president of the Thompson Quarterback Club. At Warrior Pride Day on May 6, held at Larry

Simmons Stadium, Ross expressed his own excitement about the opportunity to coach here in Alabaster. “It’s places like Alabaster and communities like this that make high school football great in this state,” said Ross. “This is a great place to be.” In preparing for the new season, the Warriors have been working hard over the summer, including summer workouts and 7-on-7 camps THS Football Coach Caleb Ross is getting the team ready for the new season which kicks off August 18. at Prattville High School and Birmingham Southern “Every coach wants to win every College. game and obviously we’re going to “We’ve been working shoot for that, but the main thing is out four days a week, basi- we want to be competitive and we Official cally six o’clock in the Publication of the want to run a first-class program,” City of Alabaster morning till nine o’clock,” said Ross. “I want our kids to learn 201 First Street N. said Ross. “We went down how to compete. Jim McClain

Mayor

Council President Ward 5

frings@cityofalabaster.com It seems like the summer break has just started and hard to believe that it will end in just a few short weeks with the beginning of the school year. As vacations and days at the park and pool end, they are replaced with shopping for school supplies, clothes, calculators, computers…you name it they need it. I hope that the tax-free holiday weekend will help everyone make their budget ends meet, I know just how much that back to school shopping can wreck the best of budgets. I hope that you will do all of your shopping in Alabaster. Even though we will not be collecting sales tax revenue that weekend on most items, it helps our retail family meet their goals and bottom line. With school comes homework, clubs, and yes football! As you know, we have a new football coach, Caleb Ross, at Thompson High School. I am asking all of you to come out and support the Warriors, Caleb, and his staff as they take the field this year. Coach Ross and his wife call Alabaster home now, and we need to show them that they are part of our family and can count on all of us for support. I imagine that being a new coach and trying to build a great team is a little like a mayor or city council member taking the reins of a struggling city like we did eleven years ago. We have come a long way through hard work, innovation, teamwork, and most of all the support of the community. Coach Ross building this team is little different. He will have an easier time if all of us stand with him, through the good and the bad. We can show our support by providing just the right words of encouragement that are needed during his times of need. With our support, Caleb can give our players the knowledge and support that they need to not only win on the field but more importantly in life. So get off the couch even if you do not have a player and do not even know anyone on the team or at Thompson High School and attend the games. Who knows, you just may make some new friends for life while rooting for the Warriors. GO WARRIORS! I want to thank Kingwood Church for stepping up again this year with the Celebrate America July 4th celebration! Another job well done, thank you! It was a little hot but there was once again a good time for all. Celebrations like this give us all moments to reflect that no matter how much trouble and disagreements we may have in the United States of America, we are all very blessed each day and live in the best country in the world. These celebrations also bring to mind that we should give thanks to God for the blessing bestowed upon the United States and thank those in the military that have sacrificed in the past and present. I hope that the back-to school season goes well for all!

mcclain@cityofalabaster.com I hope you got a chance to celebrate America at Veterans Park on July 2nd. It was a great time for families and fireworks. Kingwood Church does a tremendous job of organizing this event and bringing fireworks back to the city for a good, old-fashioned family night out. The heat of August means that football players around the country are sweating it out getting ready for the season, and our Thompson Warriors are no exception. Welcome to Coach Caleb Ross, and we want to wish the THS Warriors good luck in the upcoming season. Red Alert! Football means youth football and our youth football league is growing. This offers little boys the opportunity to play football and little girls the chance to be a cheerleader. It’s a lot of fun for them and for all the families involved. August also means back to school, and we welcome our students throughout the city back. I also want to remind everyone of the sales tax free weekend August 5-7 here in the city. Please visit our city stores for your needs as we always want to help our business community, and there are some great deals to be had to get your kids ready for school. Be sure to stop by Target’s National Night Out on August 2nd. It’s a chance for families to take back the night and enjoy our community and the men and women who keep it safe both day and night for everyone. Congratulations to the new Plaswall Plant in the city. They are creating building products that are attracting national attention with their innovation in creating lightweight yet strong building materials. It’s an interesting story you’ll find in this issue. The Alabaster Senior Center unveiled a new photo mural depicting the old mill which used to be located at the site. It’s an interesting view into the history of the city. Don’t forget the Senior activities on page 30; there’s a lot happening that will keep seniors entertained and engaged, plus there are physical activities as well which are critical as we age. Next month we’ll be talking about cooler weather and the leaves changing. One thing for sure - time flies when you’re having fun! Be sure to have your share!

C I T Y L E A D E R S. . . Sophie Martin Ward 1 martin@cityofalabaster.com Progress continues in Ward 1. The work on Alabaster Blvd. and across Weatherly Club Drive is being conducted by Alagasco. They are working to improve and expand service to both residential and commercial areas. The Abatement Board recently voted and recommended the demolition of abandoned structures in Alabaster. Several of those structures are in Ward 1. The completion of these demolition projects will improve the safety of our community and our City. I will keep you updated on this important issue. The Weatherly tornado relief drive was a major success. Thank you to all of the generous residents who contributed to this effort. Four truckloads of toiletries and supplies were donated and distributed to those affected by the recent tornadoes. It is a blessing to be part of such a generous community who want help our neighbors in need. “Mom’s First” is a new community women’s ministry that is launching in August right here in Alabaster. It is for mothers of all ages and monthly meetings will be held at First United Methodist Church’s Restore (formerly Winn Dixie). This ministry will touch on many different areas of motherhood and brings the opportunity to hear some very dynamic speakers. Please contact me for more information.

A belated tip of the cap to the TMS Soccer Team, under the expert guidance of Coach Michael Wilbanks, for finishing the year undefeated. Soccer is a tough sport and the competition grows stiffer every year as the most popular sport in the world takes a larger foothold in the Shelby County area. Having a perfect season takes a lot of hard work, a little luck and determined dedication. Congratulations from the father of a college soccer player who understands how much effort you put forth. Go Warriors!! Despite the economic challenges facing us, there have been several new businesses emerging in the last few months here in Alabaster, a testimony to people’s opinions that our city is a good place to do business. New restaurants, shops and general stores all have shown faith in our ability to recover from the recession and provide a stable base of customers. Please, please remember to shop Alabaster first as the sphere of available goods and services within our city limits expands. Remember the tax-free weekend coming up shortly to allow savings as you prepare for (dare I say it?) back to school. Gas is not free, so the closer you buy to your home, the better off we all are. Finally, I have many memories of taking my sons when they were much younger to the police and fire stations to meet the public safety officers we are blessed to have working here. Please don't hesitate to make your children familiar with and comfortable around these superb guardians of our homes and families. You never can tell when your child may need the help of one of them, and I am sure you would not want them to apprehensive about approaching them. Call and set a time to go by for a visit, or just ask the next one you meet to spend a second with you and your family. You will be surprised at their definition of "serve and protect." Grace and peace, Bob

It is hard to believe that summer is almost over. Please remember to watch out for buses and children in the coming weeks as school begins and please slow down in our neighborhoods. In the next few months you will see notice of several meetings to discuss a potential City School system. In the interim, feel free to contact either your city representative, myself, Mr. Brakefield or Mrs. Martin who also serve on the Education Committee for the City Council. We will be happy to explain the information we have at hand as we await the full comprehensive study that is expected shortly. Feel free to contact us with any specific questions. Lastly, please remember the tax free holiday this month and please patronize our Alabaster businesses! Adam moseley@cityofalabaster.com adammoseley@bellsouth.net 6

Good News! We are finally having some success collecting bond money forfeited from developers who have abandoned their developments. We have been waiting to do begin several paving projects, many of them in our Ward, to be able to budget repairs effectively. Some of the funds we receive will pay for the repairs the bonds were held for but most of them will not. The revenue collected from gas taxes doesn’t keeping up with all the road projects we have so we have to prioritize all projects. More Good News! The Housing Abatement Board has completed the necessary documents in order to have 9 unsafe houses in our city declared public nuisances. It is the first step of the process to make the property owners repair or raze their properties. Please join me in thanking those volunteers on the Board for their time and efforts. Great News! For most parents who have school age children there is the Sales Tax Holiday August 5th through Sunday August 7th. If you watch the news at all I’m sure you’ve seen how depressed the home market is right now. If you sell real estate or happen to be a developer, I don’t have to tell you anything; it’s tough. To translate that to the local market, in 2010, Alabaster had only 29 new home building permits applied for. In 2009, we had 48. Compare that with 312 only five years ago and 354 just seven years ago. A lot of people are re-modeling so our building inspectors are staying busy but it’s amazing to me to watch this evolve. In Alabaster, our goal over the last 10 or so years has been to control the growth rate as well as control the quality of what’s built. Well, over the last 3 years, the economy has controlled growth a little beyond what we had in mind. We need to grow to continue to attract businesses but not at a rate which over-taxes our ability to provide services as we did in the 1990’s when we were building around 700 houses a year. So far in 2011, we’ve taken applications for 14 new home permits, still not good. But the good news is that 8 of those were just last month alone. If that holds up for the summer, maybe things are on the way back. Maybe.

I N T H E S P O T L I G H T. . . DEBBIE STEWART

When Detective Tommy Stewart transferred from a police department in Mobile to the one here in Alabaster, it ultimately turned out to be a package deal for the City of Alabaster. A few months after relocating, Tommy’s wife, Debbie, also landed a job at City Hall managing accounts payable duties for the City. She recently completed her fourth year as a staff member in City Clerk Marsha Massey’s office. Each month, Debbie processes for payment hundreds of bills that are generated by all departments of the City. It’s almost enough to make an everyday, household bill payer’s head spin. “On a day-to-day basis, some days can be tough and at times you can have some exceptionally good days. It’s like any other job in that respect,” Debbie said. “I enjoy working here and I like my job. I also work with some really good people. That makes a big difference when you work with people

you get along with and really like. “I’ve also enjoyed meeting a lot of the citizens here in town. We have some good people in Alabaster, and I enjoy helping them in any way I can.” Debbie was born and raised in Mobile and has several family members still living in that area. After finishing high school at B.C. Rain, she took courses at Bishop State Community College before embarking on her work career. Along the way, she earned a significant amount of on-the-job experience in both bookkeeping and accounting. With such strong ties to Mobile, making the move to Alabaster represented a bold decision for the Stewart family. Debbie is glad the move was made. “We love it here,” she said. “The people are totally different from people in Mobile, and I mean that in a good way. We were both raised in Mobile so moving

MAKING IT HAPPEN... SNO BIZ CAFE For an ice-cold treat in the midst of the dog days of summer, there’s no better place in town than Sno Biz Café in Elliotsville Plaza. Located off Highway 119 across from the First Presbyterian Church of Alabaster, Sno Biz Café offers over 350 flavors of shaved ice in a fun and casual atmosphere. “Sno Biz is a pretty neat product,” said owner Brett Carter. “They offer a lot of different things. We do frozen ice-blended coffees, which are fantastic. We do milkshakes, which are out of this world. The real fruit smoothies are great, but I think my favorite drink that we do is the slushie. It’s incredible. And of course, we actually have more flavors than any other Sno Biz I’ve ever found.” Carter opened Sno Biz Café in September 2010, after working for many years in sales. When he decided to make a career change, he felt that Alabaster would make a good fit for a Sno Biz business. “I’d done just about everything there is to do,” said Carter. “You name it, I’ve sold it. CELEBRATE AMERICA SUCCESS Alabaster residents flocked to Veterans Park on Saturday, July 2 to enjoy the City’s second-annual Celebrate America festivities. Produced by Kingwood Church, in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department, the event was a big success as people came out to celebrate Independence Day and enjoy

‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q, Guthrie’s of Alabaster, Wing King, Little Italy’s Pizza, YaYa’s Burgers & Dogs, and Publix Deli, which served fresh watermelon slices and pineapple pie. The night also featured a live band, plus a showing of “Yogi Bear” on the big screen and a magnificent

fireworks display to top things off. The event ran smoothly throughout the night, with both Parks & Recreation staff and Kingwood volunteers contributing to the effort. The volunteer team managed to handle the large volume of traffic that descended on Veterans Park, thanks to the assistance of the Alabaster Police Department. “We have worked really great with the Alabaster Police Department,” said Kingwood Education Pastor Benny Cunningham. “They have been wonderful in training our parking team.” Parking zones were established in the grassy areas near Highway 119. Alabaster Fire and Rescue Service was also on hand to assist with emergencies. During the event, City Councilman Bob Hicks highlighted the sacrifices of U.S. servicemen and

assorted games provided by Games2U. Throughout the evening, people lined up to get inside the “Giant Hamster Balls” while kids darted around playing Laser Tag. For refreshments, there were plenty of food vendors on hand, including Kona Ice, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Jim 12

Another nasty little blight that likes summer time is Fire Blight. Fire Blight attacks ornamentals, especially Apple trees, Crabapple trees, Cotoneasters, and Pyracantha. You know you have Fire Blight when a branch on one of your plants dies and turns almost red. The leaves usually hang on but turn reddish brown. The damage usually starts out near the end of the branch and works its way toward the main stem of the plant. There is little you can do except prune out the affected branch, cutting it as far back as possible. Fire Blight is very contagious to plants so you should burn the branches you prune out. You should also dip or wash your pruning shears in rubbing alcohol after each cut to keep from spreading this deadly fungus.

NEW SENIOR CENTER PHOTOS CELEBRATE HISTORY This past May, the Alabaster Senior Center installed a collection of old photographs that will serve as a reminder of the thriving mill community that once stood on the site. The pictures are located just inside the Senior Center entrance, and they feature black and white images of the old Buck Creek cotton mill and historic Siluria. Some of the photos depict the Siluria Community House, which was a handsome two-story building that included a movie theater on the top floor. The building was unfortunately lost to fire in 1933. Other pictures include the old operative cottages, the treasurer's house, and even a pleasant "park scene" along Buck Creek that's reminiscent of today's Buck Creek Trail. The pictures also show some of the former mill employees, including a superintendent and several "overseers."

For some people, the pictures will bring back memories. For others, they'll serve as an education of what Alabaster used to be like. "I think folks have enjoyed looking at them," said Alicia Walters, the senior activities manager with the Parks and Recreation Department. "I think they bring back memories of how things were, and then also they show the progress that we've seen in Alabaster. But people have really enjoyed looking at the wall, and for folks who are new to the area, it helps them appreciate the history of Alabaster." Walters said that the plans for the wall were included in the initial building of the new Senior Center. "We wanted to have a wall that was in memory of the old mill site and old Siluria," said Walters. "It was in the original plans to have a memory wall, kind

YOUTH FOOTBALL WINS Football in the state of Alabama is certainly popular, and in Alabaster, that even includes the city’s youngest athletes. This year, the Alabaster Parks and Recreation Department Thompson Youth Football program has seen its enrollment grow to one of the largest in recent years. “We’re looking at approximately 250 kids out for football,” said Athletic Manager Tim Hamm. “For cheer, we’re looking at probably close to 175 cheerleaders, so that’s around 400 kids total. This is our biggest enrollment in the past three years.” This year, there are nine youth football teams, each of which has a cheer squad attached to it. The teams are organized according to weight, with the largest being the 130-pound weight division. The teams compete in the Jefferson-Shelby Youth 18

Football League against other area programs, like Vestavia, Homewood, Helena, Pelham, and Oak Mountain. “There are 11 cities that are involved, and those are all from the Birminghammetro area,” said Hamm. “They play an eight-game season, and then the championships are held at the end if you qualify for the playoffs.” According to Hamm, the teams have already started practicing. The first games will be held the week of Aug. 28. “They do ‘no pads’ for a couple of weeks, and then they move into pads at the beginning of August,” he said. “It’s a competitive league. Our 80-pound team won the championship last year.” The teams and cheer (CON’T ON PAGE 31)

TARGET NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AUGUST 2 Target of Alabaster will be hosting its annual “National Night Out” event on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The annual event is a familyfriendly affair that’s designed to bring Alabaster residents together with members of the lawenforcement community. It will be held in the Target parking lot and is free and open to the public. National Night Out was originally created 28 years ago to help bring communities together in a fun and safe environment. Each event is held in conjunction with local law-enforcement agencies to promote the connections between lawenforcement officials and the people they protect. Attendees will be able to

learn firsthand what different law-enforcement agencies do, as well as see the kinds of equipment they use, such as weapons and vehicles. According to Target Spokeswoman Renee Crook, the Alabaster Target has held a National Night Out event each year that it’s been open. Last year’s event was the best yet, with over 1,000 people in attendance. Two years ago, there were 800 people who came out for the event. “It’ll be the same as last year. We’ll have giveaways. There will be several federal, local and state agencies there,” she said. Guests can expect to meet representatives from the Alabaster Police Department, Alabaster Fire

and Rescue Service, plus a host of other law enforcement agencies. Last year’s participants also included the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the U.S. Marshals Service. “National Night Out is a time when families come together to take back their streets by hosting events such as the one we are planning,” said Crook. “This event allows people in our community to build strong relationships with local law enforcement and other agencies.” In addition to the lawenforcement outfits, there will be inflatables, plenty of food and fun for everyone. Kona Ice is scheduled to be there, and the Shelby Stompers Dance Club will be providing entertainment.

There will also be facepainting, and parents can have their children fingerprinted by law-enforcement officials for security with McGruff Safe Kids (free picture ID kits/finger printing on site). Crook said there should be around 20 different agencies participating including Shred It. “I think everybody’s coming who came last year,” she said. Above all, National Night Out is just a fun night out for the community. So bring your kids out to Target and introduce them to the local men and women who help keep our city safe.

TMS RAISES FUNDS FOR TORNADO VICTIMS When the students at Thompson Middle School heard about the devastating amount of damage that was inflicted by the tornados that passed through the state on April 27, they knew they wanted to do something to help. “Right after the tornados had struck, the kids came back to school that next day and they wanted to do something,” said Assistant Principal Katie Zielinski. Student leaders with the SGA and the National Junior Honor Society at TMS decided to organize a “Hat Day,” which gave students an opportunity to wear a hat to school in exchange for making a donation to help with tornado relief. “Typically they can’t wear hats, so it gave them something fun to do with it,” said Zielinski. “Some people were very creative

with their hats. We had all kinds, Mickey Mouse ears, baseball caps, even a princess crown. But the big thing was they wanted to get some money together.” According to Principal Melissa Youngblood, even students who forgot to bring a hat donated to the cause. “They really emptied their pockets,” said Youngblood. “Some kids had forgotten about it that day and so they brought a check the next day. So the kids were really proud of being able to do that.” In total, the students raised over $2,000 to help with the tornado relief. They presented a check to a representative from the American Red Cross. “We put all the money together and donated it to the Red Cross,” said Zielinski. “The check was for $2,011 but more money

SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUGUST 5 - 7 The City of Alabaster will once again be participating in the State of Alabama’s annual sales tax holiday, which takes place on the first full weekend of August. The three-day holiday is scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday August 5th and end at 12 midnight Sunday August 7. The State created the holiday in 2006 to ease the tax burden on back-to-school shoppers. It exempts certain items from state sales and use tax and authorizes counties and cities to waive local sales tax under the same terms and conditions. As in past years, the Alabaster City Council voted this year to

waive its usual municipal sales tax in order to further assist back-to-school shoppers. According to the Department of Revenue, exempted items include clothing ($100 or less, per article of clothing), computers and school computer supplies (a single purchase with a sales price of $750 or less), school supplies, school art supplies, school instructional materials (sales price of $50 or less, per item), and books (with a sales price of $30 or less, per book). This is the sixth year that the state has held the holiday, and it’s been greeted

GOING GREEN Over the previous months, we have suggested many things that you can do as a homeowner to become more environmentally friendly. Many people do not realize that there are many ways to also conserve and cut cost in the office environment. Office equipment is expensive and can increase those utility bills quickly. To conserve, consider using a multi-function device or all-in-one unit rather than a separate fax, printer, copier, and phone. Plug all equipment into a surge protector. This will not only protect your equipment but also make it easier to turn everything off when they are not in use. This also eliminates standby power consumption. You can further conserve power by unplugging

SOUTH CITY THEATRE CHANGES VENUES After staging productions in a building in Cloverdale Commercial Park for six years, South City Theatre has decided it’s time for a change. Confronted with the reality of a difficult economy, the local theatre company has chosen to pursue a new financial strategy that doesn’t require the burden of maintaining a permanent theater. “We’re basically going to change modes and start touring,” said Alan Gardner, founder and artistic director of South City Theatre. “With the next show, ‘The Curious Savage,’ we’re going to perform three days in Vestavia and then we’re going to perform two days in Alabaster at the Camp Branch Civic Center.” According to Gardner, the

group vacated the old location off Highway 31 in June. “We sold all the theater chairs to patrons that wanted to keep a piece of it,” said Gardner. “We kept all the platforms, and we kept all of our lighting and sound equipment.” The final show of the 2011 season, “The Curious Savage,” will take place in July, with the Alabaster shows being produced at the Camp Branch Civic Center (July 21-22). The 2012 season will begin in October with “Dial M for Murder,” the famous thriller that was made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock. It will be staged four nights at the Camp Branch Civic Center (Oct. 6-7 and 13-14). Gardner said that the

group may find a more permanent home in the future, but for the 2012 season, it plans to hold productions at the civic center as well as the Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church. The Camp Branch-Saginaw Civic Center is located south of the Colonial Promenade Shopping Center at the intersection of Highways 31 and 26. “People who are interested in seeing our productions can come to the civic center. All of the dates are on the website. We’re just changing our model to be more of a touring company as we transition into the next phase of South City,” said Gardner. “We’re going to continue to do theatre. We’re going to continue to

tell stories. We’re storytellers.” South City Theatre has been producing quality theatre in Alabaster for over ten years. This past year, the group’s production of “Driving Miss Daisy” won the Alabama Conference of Theatre Community Theatre Festival and represented Alabama at the regional competition in Atlanta. In order to keep the kids safe, the coaches attend meetings to learn about potential safety issues related to football. “They go through some meetings as far as heatrelated illness and head injury. They go through certification meetings on that, so they’re well-informed,”
