Council President Ward 5
Mayor frings@cityofalabaster.com We were truly blessed during the storms of April 27th unlike so many other areas of our state. All week we had been watching the reports of inclement weather and making plans to address what may impact Alabaster. This is one of those behind the scenes items that we do every time there is any potential risk to the city. The police, fire, and public works departments meet to coordinate their responsibilities, check safety equipment, determine who needs to be where and when, and the availability of on-call personnel. Our employees work very hard in their preparation and take these situations seriously. For example, I ran into Officer Webb of our police department the morning of the storm at the Promenade. I asked if he was ready for the storm and he answered yes and then proceeded to tell me how he had interfaced with the various businesses. Officer Webb patrols the promenade and had taken it upon himself to find out the plan for each of the businesses for severe weather. He knew where the safe place was for each business and who was in charge. He even checked with new employees that he met that day to insure that they knew the plan for their place of emplacement. In the event of a direct hit, we would know where to search first for survivors. I was impressed to say the least. This is a true public servant! After the planning, it is basically a game of waiting and prayer. We always think that we are prepared but after seeing the devastation caused by tornados that day, I do not think that any level of pre-planning can make a city ready for that level of disaster. In the early evening, I received notice that we had a tornado leaving Bibb County and heading straight for the Promenade. It was the first of two storms that tracked directly for Alabaster that night but miraculously lifted up and spared the city. We had some minor damage but nothing that we could not recover from quickly. As you are aware, others were not so lucky. We immediately began receiving calls from Jefferson County and other jurisdictions that needed our assistance. Around 9:00 P.M. that evening I determined that the worst storms had passed and that we would begin sending crews to the devastated areas to the north. That night, we sent crews from police and fire to Pratt City and Pleasant Grove. In the days to come, we followed up with emergency crews to Concord, Tuscaloosa, Shoal Creek, Bibb County, Hackleburg, and Pell City. We sent an emergency waste-water pump to Morgan County due to damage to their plant and the power grid and public works crews to Fultondale. We have also sent employees from our inspection department to assist in the review of damaged structures in Tuscaloosa. All of our efforts were expertly coordinated through the Shelby County EMA which is another blessing that most citizens are not aware. Many of our support efforts were joint deployments with our sister cities of Calera and Pelham. I am extremely proud of all of these employees that have stepped up during this hour of need. No city or county can stand alone during a disaster of this magnitude and we must all continue to help them recover. I wanted you to know how well our employees have done responding and maintaining the services in Alabaster that we have all come to expect. I also want to thank all of you that have helped as individuals or through your church! Please pray for our neighbors that are hurting!
mcclain@cityofalabaster.com Our hearts go out to all those affected by the devastation of the spring tornadoes throughout the state. They need help in every way possible. Many of our city employees have helped with the effort, and I applaud them. We have an article in the newsletter that talks about that and the various ways you can help. June means CityFest in Alabaster! Time for one of the biggest free parties in the state. There will be music all day long from the day stage and later the main stage. There will be a lot of things for the kids from free moonwalks to games with plenty to do. I think the strategy is to wear the kids out so they sleep later on the blanket during the concert when it’s the adults’ time to party. In addition to the music and the kids area, there will be a host of vendors on hand offering all sorts of goods and services as well as any kind of hot or cold food or drink you can imagine. The city is proud to be a major sponsor of the event, and we congratulate the Alabaster Arts Council for a job well done in putting on this fantastic show. We also want to thank all the sponsors of this event for their support. You’ll find a list of all the sponsors plus a schedule, map and ideas for enjoying the day in the newsletter. The ACCC Championship game was held again in our city and no matter who wins, the city wins as this event brings a lot of folks into town to enjoy our hospitality and eat, drink, shop and stay in our city. That’s a plus for everybody. Looking ahead, Kingwood Church is once again teaming with the city to present Celebrate America on Saturday, July 2 at Veterans Park. After the tremendous success of last year’s event, this year plans to offer fun, music, food games, and, oh yes, fireworks! What a wonderful way for families to celebrate our country’s birthday and our precious freedoms. The Parks and Rec Department will also be showing Movies in the Park again this season. It’s another great way for families to spend quality time together on a blanket under the stars. That’s how memories are made. Also, the Albert L. Scott Public Library kicks off the summer reading program with lots of events and fun that will really make a memorable summer for the kids. Enjoy your days in the sun.

VERTICAL HORIZON 7PM Horizon stands for a commitment to superior music. It’s a concept that has always meant a steadfast striving for the artistically-creative high road. Consistently at the wheel, founder, writer, lead singer and guitarist, Matt Scannell drives and unites the group, always exploring new territories of inspiration. Perhaps the most significant key to Vertical Horizon’s success today is the freedom they have from the constraints of a major recording label. Vertical Horizon works at a tempo that fuels the creative process. “Our music is coming from the purest place – there are no other considerations beyond ‘Do we like this? Does it mean something to us?’” It’s no wonder why so many performers cite them as influences. They’re a musicians’
band, always user-friendly and highly accessible. Is there integrity in music? Listen for yourself and be the judge. “Burning the Days”, Vertical Horizon’s newest studio album (2009), is a true testament to their commitment to making brilliant music. Produced by Scannell, this album reflects the quest for balance in a journey from challenge to peace. According to Scannell, the album is “sonically as good as anything we have ever done. This album and our renewed sense of creativity really resonates with our fans.” “Burning the Days” features virtuoso drummer Neil Peart of Rush on “Save Me from Myself”, “Even Now,” and “Welcome to the Bottom.”
Also featured is Richard Marx playing piano on “Here” and producing two of Matt’s lead vocal tracks. The two radio singles from the album, “Save Me from Myself” and “The Lucky One” have been successful on the Hot AC charts, and have given Vertical Horizon a current presence at radio. According to Alternative Addiction, “This album is a perfect showcase for Vertical Horizon’s return to the spotlight and is one of the group’s best albums.”

Founded in the early 1990s, Vertical Horizon released three albums independently (“There and Back Again”, “Running on Ice”, and “Live Stages”) and toured extensively. In 1999, the band signed with RCA and experienced meteoric success with “Everything You Want”, selling over two million copies. The title song captured the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 and Adult Top 40 charts, and went on to become the most played single of 2000.

I N T H E S P O T L I G H T. . . JIM DAW
Officially, Jim Daw's job title is laborer, but the title barely scratches the surface of what all he does for the City of Alabaster's Parks and Recreation Department. Based out of the Parks and Recreation Department's workshop at Buck Creek Park, Daw is more or less a jack of all trades. "I take care of the ball fields, cut grass, weed-eat, do some plumbing, a little bit of everything," said Daw. Daw, who is originally from Ensley, has lived in Alabaster for the past 16 years. He's worked with the Parks Department for the past three years. "Before this, I worked for UMS," he said. "I read power meters."
Apparently, working with the Parks and Recreation Department has been a great fit for Daw, who said he enjoys the variety that the job offers. "I love it. I just like dealing with the public. You meet everybody. You're doing a different thing every day, and I like working outdoors. I worked for myself for many years, outside, painting houses. I just love being outdoors and dealing with people," he said. Because he's based at the Buck Creek shop, most of his work is done at Buck Creek Park, Warrior Park, Abbey Wooley, and Heroes Park. But on occasion, he's required to assist at Veterans Park as well.

that day and give everybody assignments." Frequently that means working with some of the other staff members to help ready the fields. "It's usually two or three of us working together," said Daw. "Today, I've been dragging fields getting stuff ready to go, chalking fields, and we've got one guy down here cutting the grass." Daw has two sons and a daughter, as well as six grandkids. "Sometimes we end up going down to the Vet and helping them," said Daw, "whenever we have big tournaments and stuff." Daw said he assists at the Senior Center as well. "We go over and we work with the seniors at the senior building and just keep stuff up," he said. Because of the variety of activities required to maintain the city's parks, no two days are alike for the maintenance crew. But according to Daw, they do usually start out the same way, with Parks Superintendent Jerry Simons giving out the day's assignments. "I usually get here about six," said Daw. "Jerry will get here and we'll have a meeting, and he'll tell us what all he wants us to do

MAKING IT HAPPEN... BROOKLERE PHARMACY For folks looking for a pharmacy with friendly service and a family feel, the new Brooklere Pharmacy off Highway 119 may be just the thing. Opened in October at Buck Creek Plaza, Brooklere Pharmacy is a family-owned business that emphasizes outstanding customer service. "If I can just get people in there one time," said owner Johnny Brooklere, "they'll come back because they're treated so well." The Brooklere family, which includes pharmacists Johnny Brooklere and his father Anthony, has been in the business since Anthony opened his first store in Forestdale in 1968. They currently own Adamsville Pharmacy in Adamsville, and when they decided to expand, they felt like they found the perfect location in Alabaster. SGT. FIRST CLASS JAMIE BUCKLEY 6PM Sgt. 1st Class Jamie Buckley was born in Hamilton, Ohio, and was raised in Pasco, Wash. He graduated from Pasco Senior High School in June 1988 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1988 as a Chemical Operations Specialist. Buckley's first duty assignment was in Bamberg, Germany. He served with 3-35 Armor Battalion, 3rd "Bulldog" Brigade, 1st Armored Division as a Company Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Noncommissioned Officer. His unit participated in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm and was awarded the Valorous Unit Award for its actions during the "100hour ground campaign" that eventually led to the unconditional surrender of all Iraqi Forces. After that,

Buckley returned to Germany and was then Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army. During his time as a civilian, he performed duties as an Emergency 911 Dispatcher and Deputy Sheriff in his hometown. It was during this time that Buckley began singing at local clubs and lodges around Southeastern Washington. After two years of singing at local gigs, he wanted to take his singing to a new level. He and his wife decided that the U.S. Army could help him realize his dream of someday making it to Nashville. Buckley went to the same recruiting station where he enlisted from nine years earlier and reenlisted in the U.S. Army with a direct assignment to Fort Hood, Texas. Buckley was assigned as
a vocalist to the 4th Infantry Division Band where he served for two and a half years. He was then assigned to the Eighth U.S. Army Band in Seoul, Korea, in 2000. His next assignment landed him at Fort Knox, Ky., in the 113th Army Band. During this time, Buckley not only served as an Army Ambassador through his music, but he also maintained his proficiency as a Chemical Operations NCO by serving in company to brigade size NBC positions. Buckley was then assigned to Fort Knox's NBC Defense Course as an Instructor for Initial Entry Training and later as the Committee Chief overseeing the entire NBC School at Fort Knox. In 2003 Buckley volunteered to become a U.S. Army Recruiter and was assigned to the Seattle

The Summer Challenge Kicks Off! Kids Can “Explore One World, Many Stories” during Summer Reading A summer of cultural exploration and reading is in store for Alabaster's children of all ages at the Albert L. Scott Public Library where they can become reading champions. “One World, Many Stories” kicks off on Wednesday, June 1 for children 10 years old and younger. The day will feature two shows by comic magician Russell Davis: one at 10:30 a.m. and another at 3:30 p.m. Children can register for the challenge before or after either show and receive a large goody bag as well as a summer activity calendar, a small gift, and more. Adults can register children any day between June 1 and July 8. Kids pick a reading goal, check out and read our library books, and get prizes along the way to their goal. When they reach their goal, ending their challenge, they receive a certificate and can enter prize drawings for a bicycle and other surprises. “You Are Here” is the theme of the Young Adults (YAs) Challenge for kids 11 years old to 18 years old. They will have a separate kick off party on Thursday, June 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. featuring snacks, prizes, and the chance to create a masterpiece with an artist from the Birmingham Museum of Art. YAs can have any reading goal, but once they've read at least three of our library books, they can enter a drawing for an eBook reader and other prizes. During the six week challenge there will be entertainers, crafts, drama, cooking, comedy, juggling workshops, and more. Youth services librarian Frances Smith says that, once again, everything is free: 'F' is for fun, 'R' is for rewarding, and the double 'E' stands for entertaining and educational. The Summer Challenge ends with a big Finale on Wednesday, July 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. There will be free refreshments including hot dogs donated by Alabaster's Dairy Queen Restaurant, face painting, balloon sculptures, and lots of surprises. The goal of the Summer Challenge is to encourage children to read for pleasure when they are not in school. Parents and other caregivers are invited to participate and help pre-literate children enjoy books and develop a love of reading. To prepare children, Miss Frances has visited schools in the area to encourage students to explore the many stories of our one world and become reading champions. The 2011 Summer Reading Program is supported in whole or in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Alabama Public Library Service. We would also like to thanks our sponsors, to date: Arby's (Alabaster), American Village, Birmingham Barons Baseball, Bike Link, Bud's Best Cookies, Chick fil A, Coca-Cola (Birmingham Bottlers), Dairy Queen (Alabaster), DeSoto Caverns Park, Oak Mountain Lanes, Parent Teacher Store (Hoover), Red Mountain Theatre Company, Skates 280, UPS Store (Pelham), Walmart (Alabaster).

KIDSFEST IS FAMILY FUN!
For families interested in a little free fun for their kids this month, the KidsFest area of CityFest offers the perfect way to spend a summer day. Sponsored by Vic Smith CPA, P.C., KidsFest offers kids a smorgasbord of activities and entertainment, and best of all for the parents, it's all free. "It is a free event so we want to make sure that the kids enjoy themselves," said Emily Sykes, vice president of the Alabaster Arts Council. "And really that area is all about the kids." According to Sykes, KidsFest has grown each year, and every year, the Alabaster Arts Council is committed to making it bet-
ter. "Every year it gets larger and larger," said Sykes. "We try to come up with new ideas for exciting things for the kids to do and have different activities for them." This year, kids can look forward to a variety of awesome activities, like Lowe's "Kids Build It" workshop. This is an area where kids can have some hands-on fun, building an assortment of small projects under the supervision of adults. The workshop is appropriate for kids ages 4 to 12 and is a popular station for kids to visit with their parents. There will also be 15 inflatables this year, along with painting, popular children's musician Jim Aycock, and a healthy snack demonstration sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. There will also be

With the number of children that enjoy KidsFest every year, organizers have to rely heavily on their sponsors to help make the event happen. "It's totally reliant on the sponsors," said Sykes. NEW THS PRINCIPAL CHOSEN Vestavia Hills High School Assistant Principal Danny Steele was recently selected to become the new principal at Thompson High School. His hiring was approved by the Shelby County Board of Education on April 21. Steele, who graduated with a degree in history from Covenant College in 1992, started his career as a teacher. "I taught for four years in Birmingham at JacksonOlin High School and then I taught for four years at Mountain Brook Junior High and decided I wanted to get into administration," said Steele. As an administrator, Steele has worked at Fairfield High School, Tarrant High School, and
even for a year at Thompson High School. "I was an assistant principal there before I came to Vestavia," said Steele. Steele is replacing outgoing principal Robin Thomas, who is leaving Thompson to become the high school coordinator for Shelby County Schools. Steele said that the two actually worked together during his previous time at Thompson. "He was the principal when I was an assistant there four years ago, so we'll get to continue our professional relationship," said Steele. Steele has a master's degree from UAB, as well as an Ed.S. degree and a doctorate from Samford. (CON’T ON PAGE 31)

CITYFEST DAY STAGE As usual, CityFest has some big-name artists playing the Main Stage this year, but there are also plenty of other musicians who will provide entertainment throughout the day. Many of those artists are of the home-grown variety, including Alabaster's own Sanchez Tanniehill, who's scheduled to kick things off at 9 a.m. on the Day Stage. Tanniehill specializes in modern gospel music, which should make a great way to kick off the festival. At 11 a.m., Atticus Avenue will be getting things cranked up with its own brand of modern rock
and roll. The four-man rock outfit, whose members all hail from Pelham, provides an energetic show that will no doubt get the blood pumping. "We like to say that we're founded in rock," said drummer Brad Kuehner. "We're big classic rock fans, and a lot of the music we play when we play our cover tunes is '90s rock with a lot of classic rock." Atticus Avenue has played gigs all over the South, from Birmingham to Starkville, but this will be their first time to play CityFest. "CityFest is awesome,"

TORNADO RELIEF EFFORTS ONGOING In the wake of a wave of devastating tornados that passed through Alabama in April, many around the state have contributed in a number of ways to the relief efforts. The City of Alabaster has been no exception. According to City officials, Alabaster Fire and Rescue helped in the immediate aftermath of the storms, providing search and rescue assistance in Pleasant Grove, Concord, and Cordova. The department also provided personnel assistance at the Jefferson County Emergency Operations Center and the Shoal Creek Fire Department. The Alabaster Police Department provided assistance to a number of different agencies across several area counties following the storms. Those areas included Fultondale, St. Clair County, Pratt City, Cordova, Pleasant Grove, and Tuscaloosa. The response included dispatching over 20 different officers
and providing over 400 man-hours of assistance. Among some of the specific contributions, Alabaster officers arrested several looters and were able to rescue four small children and two young mothers. The Red Cross has played a major role in the state's relief efforts as well and continues to provide one of the best ways for people to contribute to the effort. "The primary things that Red Cross is doing are what we do in any disaster, whether it's one family or thousands, and that's primarily making sure that people have shelter, making sure they have food and clothing. Those are our primary things, meeting their emergency needs," said Mary Kinard, the executive director of the Shelby County Red Cross. In terms of Shelby County specifically, Kinard noted that the county was
fortunate enough to avoid the brunt of the storms. "In Shelby County we had some scattered damage from the first round of storms that came through," said Kinard, "and we also had a large area on Caldwell Mill Road that was affected. They had a lot of trees down, trees on houses, and streets that needed to be cleared. Red Cross has been out talking to individuals in that area, making sure they have what they need." For people who want to contribute to the relief effort, Kinard said that the best way is to simply make monetary donations to the Red Cross. "You can designate those donations for the Alabama tornados, and those donations will go to help anyone
in the state of Alabama with a need," said Kinard. People can mail checks to the local Red Cross office at 4524 Southlake Parkway, Suite 5, Hoover, AL 35244. They can donate online at RedCross.org. Also a $10 donation can be made to American Red Cross Disaster Relief by texting REDCROSS to 90999. For people attending CityFest on June 4, organizers say there will be an opportunity for guests to donate to tornado victims during the festival.

CITY FUNDS NEW SCHOOL SYSTEM STUDY The Alabaster City Council recently authorized a new study to investigate the possibility of creating a new city school district. According to City officials, the study is being conducted by consultant Ira Harvey and is expected to take around three months to complete. A previous school-district study was conducted in 2004. City officials said that the new study will provide a more comprehensive look at the issue. "The other study we did was very basic," said one official. "It had the basic information, but it didn't give us a lot of guidance. This one not only covers what we've got, it tells us what we can do and how to do it. If you want to get to be one of the top schools in the state, here's what you need to do and here's an idea of what it would cost to do that." According to officials, the new study should provide
multiple options for the City of Alabaster to consider. "What we've asked Dr. Harvey to do is provide us with a couple of scenarios. One, taking the tax-base right now as is and providing us what we can do with the school system today," said an official. "We've also asked for a couple of scenarios from a curriculum standpoint and a loweringclass-size standpoint. What would it take to have a more robust curriculum to offer our children here in the City of Alabaster?" Once the study is completed, officials say they will pore over the findings in an effort to best decide how to move forward. "We're hoping for the feasibility study to be completed late August or early September, and at that time we hope to make the best decision possible," said one City official. Throughout the summer,

officials expect to hold a series of town hall meetings so that residents can discuss the various issues and concerns related to the topic. Alabaster's six public schools include Creek View Elementary, Meadow View
Elementary, Thompson Intermediate, Thompson Sixth-Grade Center, Thompson Middle, and Thompson High School. They are currently a part of the Shelby County School System.

LOCAL AUTHOR’S TALE OF SURVIVAL In December of 2009, local resident Patricia Taylor suffered a massive heart attack. She recounts her experience of survival in her new book "Life's Not Over Until God Says It's Over!" "I went to Shelby to get it checked out. I didn't think I was having a heart attack, but when I got there, they discovered I'd had a massive heart attack," said Taylor. According to Taylor, the news came as a big surprise, since she was active and otherwise healthy. "I've always been active," she said. "I'd gone to the doctor and gotten a clean bill of health. You can have these symptoms and not even know it." On learning of her heart attack, Taylor had to decide whether or not to undergo surgery, which is where the spiritual element of her story begins. "The doctor said there was so much damage done
to my heart that they didn't want to operate," said Taylor. "I had less than a 30 percent chance of survival. They asked me, what do you want to do? I said, you do what you can do, and the God I've been serving all these years, He's able to bring me out." During the surgery, Taylor said she had an outof-body experience that amounted to a spiritual trial. "I saw them operating on me. My spirit came up out of my body, and I appeared in a court setting as if on the Judgment Day. There were two lawyers, one judge, one witness, and I was on the witness stand. The Bible says in Revelations how we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. This is true," said Taylor. According to Taylor, the two lawyers argued their cases, debating her life,
until the judge gave her a choice to make. "The judge looked at me and said you have a choice. You can go back to life as you know it or you can go on to your eternal resting place with your Heavenly Father," said Taylor. "I was forming the words to say, I am out of here, but do you know what came out of my mouth? I'll stay." According to Taylor, the amazing experience is what inspired her to write the book, which she hopes will inspire others who are struggling to overcome obstacles in their lives. "There's so much gratitude in my heart. The doctor said most people don't survive what I survived," she said. Taylor's book also includes other spiritual experiences that helped shape her life. She will be
signing the book at Albert L. Scott Library in Alabaster on Saturday, June 18, at 11 a.m. She will also be at the Pelham library on June 25. "It's Not Over Until God Says It's Over!" is available at Amazon.com.

SKATEBOARD CONTEST ROLLS ON AT THE VET The Alabaster Parks and Recreation Department played host once again to the Pat Wachter Bowl Contest on Saturday, May 7. The event drew a large crowd of spectators and attracted some of the South's top bowl riders to Veterans Skate Park. The Pat Wachter Bowl Contest originated in Alabaster five years ago but was held in Madison the following year and in Florence the year after that. Last year, the contest returned to Veterans Park, and organizers said that they expect it to remain in Alabaster in the future. Over the past five years, the contest has drawn some of the top names in

skateboarding to Alabama. The first year, Lance Mountain won the Masters division, while legendary skateboarder Christian Hosoi served as guest judge. This year attracted more top talent as last year's winner Steven Pineiro returned, along with his twin brother Juan who placed third in last year's contest. Both are sponsored by Embassy Skateboards and live in Jacksonville, Fla. Last year's runner up, Kaden Campbell of Athens, Ga., also participated in this year's contest. "We had a great group of skaters show up this year," said Tim Spinosi, one of the event's organizers. "This is about as good as it gets right now. The

twins, for example, those guys are pretty much competing on the Tony Hawk level. Every year that we do this, we get a better group each time." Pat Wachter himself served as emcee for the event. Wachter is known as the state of Alabama's first professional skateboarder. This year's guest judge was

Bill Danforth of American Nomad Skateboards. Danforth, who is from Detroit, Mich., was a member of the Alva Skates team in the 1980s. Next year, organizers said they hope to partner with contests in other states to help them attract larger sponsors for the event. (CON’T ON PAGE 31)
MATURE COMEDY JUNE 3-12 South City Theatre presents “Laughter On Laughter on the The 23rd Floor” by Neil Simon [Mature 23rd Floor Audiences Only] directed by Dianne Daniels June 3-12 Another gem from perennial favorite Neil Simon, “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” was inspired by Simon's early career experience as a junior jokesmith for Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, where Simon worked with an all-star writing team, which included Sid Caesar, Larry Gelbart, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Selma Diamond and Woody Allen. The play focuses on Max Prince, the star of a weekly comedy-variety show circa 1953, and his staff, including Simon's alter-ego Lucas Brickman, who maintains a
running commentary on the writing, fighting, and wacky antics which take place in the writers' room. At the plot's core is Max's ongoing battles with televisions executives who fear his humor is too sophisticated for 1950’s middle America. (Includes mature language) Tickets are $15. Student, senior and groups of 10 or more are $12. South City Theatre is located at 109 Cloverdale Drive off Hwy 31 just past the Snow Down Shopping Center and across from the Saginaw Post Office. NEW THS PRINCIPAL CHOSEN (CON’T FROM PAGE 21) He is scheduled to begin his tenure at Thompson in June, and it sounds like he'll be busy from the start. "At the beginning of summer, one of the biggest things is getting the master schedule together. That's something we have got to finalize. We'll also be preparing for registration for the upcoming school year, and we'll also be going through a transition of new software technology," said Steele. In general, Steele said
he's excited by the opportunity to return to Thompson. "It's a great staff at Thompson and a great community. Great schools are great in part because they're in communities that care about education and support it. I'm excited to become part of not just Thompson High School but also the Alabaster community and I am very much looking forward to rejoining the Thompson High School staff and looking forward to the year," he said.
SKATEBOARDING CONTEST (CON’T FROM PAGE 28) "Our hope is that this will be the last year that this is an independent event. What we're hoping to do is take it to what's called a trifecta event, so there'll be a contest here, and then Georgia will put on one at their park, and Florida will do one at theirs," said Spinosi. "We're
still trying to work it out logistically." Some of this year's sponsors included Golden Rule Bar-B-Q and Grill, SkateAlabama.com, Art of Skateboarding, Khiro Skateboard Products, Faith Skate Supply, and Chiropractic Today.
