CITY FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE CHRISTMAS EVE SANTA ROUTES The following are estimated times Santa will arrive in the listed areas of the City on Christmas Eve. Please be looking for Santa thirty (30) minutes before and after his estimated time of arrival. Also, due to the growth of our City, Santa is limited on his stops. We ask that you gather near the designated (red & yellow) Santa Stop signs. Santa will not be able to stop at individual homes, or go on every street in each neighborhood. We apologize for any inconveniences. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. We want to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas. To follow Santa's Progress while on the route, please go to the cities website at www.cityofalabaster.com and follow the links to the city’s Fire Dept.’s Santa Route. We will be doing our best to keep track of Santa's progress throughout the night and posting that progress to the website so that you will know whether Santa will be on time or if he was delayed due to Emergency Responses. 1:00

The event, which takes place December 24th (Christmas Eve), continues to be one that the Fire Department eagerly looks forward to and one that the community of Alabaster has enjoyed for many years. This year will be no exception. The guys at AFRS continue giving extra time and effort to make sure all goes well and everyone in the City, "naughty or nice" has an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the 'Jolly Ole' Elf!' However, 'The Touring of Santa Routes' grows to a bigger event each year.

Mayor frings@cityofalabaster.com The days leading into the month of November were some of the busiest ever. We had a very successful Fall Walk celebration the last week in October along the Buck Creek Trail. The weather was terrific and along with the great food and entertainment made this a very special day. I really enjoyed meeting and talking with so many of you along the trail. I want to express special thanks to my right-hand man Mr. George Henry for all of the organizational skills along with those of Mr. Ricky Nance our Park Director. Also, all of the park staff worked extremely hard in the days leading to the event as well as that day. These are the people that make so many great things happen for all of us every month. The Fall Walk was the gateway to a successful celebration of Halloween the next day. Many of our subdivisions and churches were covered up with young people trick or treating and having fun. We had little if any mischief or trouble so a Huge Thank You for the supervised fun. I hope that all of you had a great Thanksgiving and were able to spend time with friends and family. I want to thank the First Baptist Church of Alabaster for hosting their annual Thanksgiving lunch to honor our seniors. The food and company was excellent as usual. Those of you involved in planning this event probably do not realize just how much everyone enjoys and looks forward to this annual meal. Thanksgiving and Christmas can be very lonely times for many of us and this is particularly true for our senior citizens. These events go so very far by spreading love through our community. I want to remind all of you that we will have our annual Christmas Parade on December 4th which is sponsored by the Alabaster Beautification Board. If you see a member of the board on parade day, please give them a thank you for their months of planning and hard work. Our parade is one of the largest, if not the largest, in Alabama. Many communities have discontinued their celebrations due to costs but thanks to all of the volunteer support for our parade, we have been able to continue the tradition. The parade would not be possible without the support of the Alabaster Police Department. Please thank our officers as well as the support that we receive from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. With all of these wonderful things happening in our city, it is easy to forget that we have many neighbors that need financial assistance or simply understand that someone cares and really loves them. The holidays are times that seem to intensify and magnify the bad things that happen to us, our families, and friends. Even in loving and supportive families, individuals can develop problems that appear so large that there are no answers except suicide. These situations have been some of the hardest for me to work through during my ten years in office and I hesitate to discuss them here but people need help. Suicides come without warning and the result is devastating to the families and the entire community. I ask that all of us be vigilant this holiday season for friends and family members that may be having these thoughts and need our help. Let us send the message that we all love them and we want to listen, understand, and help. Loved ones in these situations are often unable to express their needs to those that they love and that love them. This is where we can assist and maybe be the catalyst to turn things around and help them to see that they are loved and needed in the family and community. Please reach out to others with your heart this Christmas season. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas!
mcclain@cityofalabaster.com Seems like it was just yesterday when we were getting ready for CityFest and now it’s Christmas! I hope you got an opportunity to come out for the Fall Walk on October 30. It was an absolutely perfect day and we had a lot of folks come out for the food, fun, music, and nature. Congratulations to all the city employees who worked so hard to make this a worthwhile event. Welcome to the new YMCA located at the former location of the Body Shop. This is a great addition to the city and they plan to add other buildings and a pool there adjacent to the fields they own. South City Theatre recently won a statewide theater competition for its production of “Driving Miss Daisy”. Congratulations to the cast and director. This is another feather in the city’s cap to have such a fine theater right here. Don’t forget to check out their upcoming Christmas comedy “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” Dec. 10-19. Now on to Christmas events. The season kickoff is the biggest Christmas parade in Alabama right here on Hwy 31 (or Main Street as some call it) on Saturday, December 4. The parade kicks off at 10 am. and has bands, dancing, floats, candy, and, of course, a visit by Santa riding along on one of our fire trucks. It’s a great time and I hope you get a chance to come out and see it. That night kicks off the Christmas Village at Fire Station #1 across from the Albert L. Scott Library. It’s got lights and fun things to do for kids of all ages and it’s open every night until New Year’s. Seniors won’t want to miss the annual Senior Christmas Dance on Saturday, December 11 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the Thompson Middle School Cafeteria. Free food, fun, music and lots of dancing. You can’t beat it! Call 663-1307 for reservations as space is limited. The Albert L. Scott Library features a variety of Christmas activities that kids of all ages will enjoy. Be sure to check them out on page 16 because there is a lot happening. Be sure to get your Christmas list done on time and be sure to look to buy those gifts right here in Alabaster and Buy Alabaster First. Every present you buy here in the city helps us to provide city services to you. Remember that the best Christmas present is love and caring, and have a very Merry Christmas!

A smoking ordinance was unanimously passed by the Alabaster City Council on October 21st. This was definitely a victory for the health and well-being of Alabaster residents. I feel that the ordinance is fair because it does give restaurants and hotels a choice on whether to be a non-smoking or smoking facility. If you have any questions about the ordinance, please feel free to contact your councilperson or City Hall. Many families are still feeling the effects of the economy. During this holiday season, please remember to "Buy Alabaster First". It brings much needed revenue to our city and everyone can benefit in the long run. I remain confident that Alabaster will stay strong and continue to prosper. Spend some quality time with family and friends by coming out to the Alabaster Christmas Parade on December 4th. This Christmas I am so grateful for my husband, Rob, and our three daughters, Hope, Molly and Katherine Jane. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and many blessings during this holiday season. Blessings, Sophie Martin

I hope everyone had the chance to give thanks with family and friends. With the next year just a few short weeks away, we can look back happily on 2010 as a year that could have been a lot worse than it was. It seems that money is starting to move about a bit more as we head into the Christmas season. Let us pray that we have seen the worst as far as our economy. The city was able to keep everyone employed while others cut back heavily. The senior center was opened, paid for from day one by use of dedicated funds in reserve and the kindness of our friends in the county. These rays of hope, combined with another conservatively sculpted budget, allows us to look forward to 2011 with a smile rather than a shudder. Fall Walk 2010 was a roaring success, with perfect weather, strong participation and great fun for all. The Buck Creek Trail was on display, and it was very apparent that the Park and Rec team has worked very diligently to make it a beautiful showcase. Thanks to all the team that have taken a beautiful natural area and made it something for all of us to enjoy thoroughly. Finally, on a more personal note, I ask your prayers for our son Kyle as he deploys to Afghanistan on December 4th, when he will join our neighbor Jason Pohl who is already in service to America there. We recently welcomed Rick Coleman from a tour, and would ask you to tell me of someone you know that is over there so I may add them to my prayer list. Finally, I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas. Grace and peace, Bob

I want to spotlight a great group of residents this month that help us all. The Friends of the Albert L. Scott Library is a fantastic group of dedicated people. This year alone they have raised and then donated $6,000 to the library to help with programs and books. This is not a onetime deal, but is something that they do annually. The Friends play a vital role in support of our community library. I urge you to become a member or volunteer for this great organization. For more information you can contact the library or ask any staff member. You can also find them on Facebook. It is Christmas time again! Please support all our local businesses. This is when they make or break their year, so I encourage you to take the time to say thank you to them for investing in your community. This is also a great time of year to stop and count our many blessings. I count my family and friends among the many, many blessings that GOD has given me. I hope that not only during this season of giving, but all year we remember to think of others, show kindness, generosity and patience. Wishing you all the very best and GOD’s Blessings. Merry Christmas, Adam 6

C I T Y L E A D E R S. . . Rick Walters Ward 4 walters@cityofalabaster.com Last month I hope everyone completed their civic duty by voting in the General Election November 2nd. I had the privilege of working the polls again, and although it is the toughest single day a person can work, it is also one of the most satisfying. It is so much more complicated than most people can imagine. The fact that it can be done at all with such a high degree of efficiency and accuracy is a testament to poll workers everywhere. If you voted last month, I thank you. If you did not, I challenge you to do your civic homework, get involved in what is going on around you and to participate in the process by voting. I can't help but to believe we would all benefit from the process. Locally, the Friends of the A.L. Scott Library were able to donate $3,000 to our library for programs for children and adults and for special needs, such as repainting the table and chairs in the children's area. The Friends have also organized a book fair with the Alabaster Books-A-Million store for Tuesday, December 14. Between the hours of 4 - 8 PM, the friends will greet customers and hand out vouchers. Vouchers presented at checkout will have 10% of the purchase price donated to the Friends. For the 3rd year in a row the Alabaster Water Board has earned the Alabama Department of Environment Plant Optimization Award for Well #1 filtration. This month the board will consider bids for a similar plant to filter our last well. It also is my duty to report that long time AWB Board member and Chairwoman Cathy Bradford has tendered her resignation. Please join me by thanking her for years of dedication and service. To list everything she has helped do for us would take this entire column.
In case you have not heard, or just forgotten, please allow me to remind you of our Annual Christmas Parade Saturday, December 4th. As always it will be one of the largest parades in Alabama and we will be throwing some candy! Have a Merry Christmas - Keep in Touch.

You probably heard we passed a smoking ordinance last month. My position is that I feel government (especially local government) butts into business too much so I personally would not vote for a total smoking ban. However, I voted for this ordinance because it gives everyone a choice. The business gets to choose if they want to be a smoking or non-smoking facility and has to post that on the door. The customer has a choice to go in or not BEFORE they actually enter the facility. Serves the purpose, I think. My article last month about voting gave a few folks the impression I didn't like the Tea Party. Not true. While I'm not a tea party member, I think they put some issues into the spotlight that need to be spotlighted. My article was poorly written but my point (in my mind anyway) was that some people are presenting themselves as a Tea Party affiliate in order to get votes when in reality their philosophies are much different. My goal for that article was simply to encourage people to vote and to do some homework on who they choose. Sorry for the confusion. Merry Christmas to you and your family. See you at the Christmas Parade on Dec. 4th!

You can forget the old joke about having enough kids in the family to field your own basketball or baseball team. At the Reid household in Montevallo, they probably joked about starting their own fire department. In reality, the Reids could make a strong case for that because they certainly have the qualifications. Bill Reid, the patriarch of the family is the long-time fire chief of Montevallo. Triplet sons Mike, Danny and Phillip and youngest son Andy all work for local fire departments - Mike and Danny in Pelham while Phillip and Andy serve in Alabaster. Phillip, who has just completed his 16th year with the Alabaster Fire & Rescue Service, was the first of the Reid brothers to enter the profession on a full-time basis. After serving as a lieutenant with AF&RS for 10 years, he became a battalion chief in April following the retirement of Eddie Harris. As a battalion chief, Phillip is responsible for the day-today operations of his shift and manages staffing issues and personnel matters. He
also serves as incident commander on major calls that occur when he's on duty. "My father's work as a volunteer with the fire department in Montevallo had a big influence on my decision to become a firefighter," Phillip said. "That's basically how I got into it. We always hung around the fire station when we were younger and it was a way of life for all of us. There was never any question of what I was going to do when I grew up." Phillip joined the department in Alabaster in 1994 after taking college courses at Montevallo and earning certification as an EMT at UAB. He also has been certified in handling emergency-response rescues involving trenches, high angles and confined spaces. Phillip's job often presses him and his fellow firefighters into situations that vary from one day to the next. That's one of the things he likes about his job. "Nothing is ever the same from day to day," he said. "Each day is different. You never know what's in store. It's a very satisfying career to be in and every
firefighter I know loves his job. It's a calling and a way of life for us. It's especially gratifying to know we're serving the community and helping people out in any way we can." It was fun to go around to other jewelry stores and see how they did things and get to learn the manufacturing end as well as the retail end," he said. In terms of product, Paul's offers a wide range of both jewelry and watches, including the most popular brands, like Citizen, Seiko, Natalie K, Alisa, and Pandora. "Pandora's the hottest line right now in the country. We put that in when we opened up here," said Petro. Paul's is also unique in that they actually custommake a lot of their merchandise. "I would say probably 30 percent to half of our merchandise we manufacture ourselves," said Petro. "I have a master jeweler here in the store." HIKE RAISES FUNDS FOR CANCER PATIENTS A group of church members at Westwood Baptist Church recently organized a unique fundraiser for two young churchgoers battling cancer. The event, called "Tell Cancer to Take a Hike," was held at Oak Mountain State Park on Sunday, Oct. 3 in support of Reilly Montgomery, 9, and Carson Sumpter, 16. The event featured a fun day hike that was open to all ages. It drew approximately 450 hikers as well as 100 onlookers. "We wanted to do something family-oriented," said Darlene Carrigan, the event's organizer, "something the whole family could do." Carrigan said the idea
behind the fundraiser was to raise money to help offset the expensive medical costs associated with cancer treatment that aren't covered by insurance. "When I learned that these two families at Westwood were battling cancer, I immediately felt God wanted me to do something," said Carrigan. Participants paid $5 each to hike, and there were also T-shirts for sale. In all, the event raised over $5,000. According to Carrigan, the turnout for the event was remarkable. "It was the whole community," she said. "This is what was so amazing. There were people from Pelham High School, Helena Intermediate, Helena Middle, the basket-

ball team from Thompson High School came, and the fifth-grade cheerleaders came. It was great to see different people from Shelby County coming out to support these families." Carrigan credited several other church members for helping with the event: Brandon Killingsworth, Matthew Killingsworth, Laura Mayer, Connie Green and Mitchell Gibbs. She also thanked Boy Scout Troop 220 for leading the hike. Members of Westwood Youth also assisted, setting up a water tent for the hikers and doing face-painting for the kids. Local juggler
Tim Brewer was also on hand for entertainment, along with local Christian musician Kevin Derryberry. Carrigan also thanked the State Park for its cooperation with the event. "They were 100 percent supportive," she said.

The annual parade is sponsored by the Alabaster Beautification Board, though entry applications are being coordinated this year through the Parks and Recreation Department. Applications to participate in the parade can be found online at the City of Alabaster website (www.cityofalabaster.com) under the Beautification Board tab. The deadline for entry was November 1, but late applications will be entertained so long as there are still spaces available. Any questions regarding entry should be directed to the Parks and Recreation Department at 664-6840. Floats should be decorated according to this year's theme and should also have candy to throw along the parade route. In addition to all the creative Christmas floats, spectators can expect a fun show from the Thompson High School marching band. According to Director Jon Bubbett, they'll be playing traditional Christmas music along the route. "We'll play a Christmas carol of some kind," said Bubbett. This year, the band will also be accepting monetary donations during the parade to help pay for a spring trip to Indianapolis. Garden Tip - Winter is an important period in the gardening season, more so than you’d think. While winter is in full swing, compost is continuing to decompose and get ready for use for the spring. Additionally, winter is a great time to grow cover crops which will help improve the soil for the next season. There are also plenty of plants that you can grow during the fall and winter, both indoors and out. Also, you can strategically plan a winter garden so that you can enjoy color and attractive plants all year long.

SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS PROGRAMS The Christmas season is in full swing now, which means it's time to consider helping out with the Greater Birmingham Salvation Army's annual holiday programs. The Salvation Army holds two major charitable programs each year, including the Angel Tree program and the well-known Red Kettle campaign. The Angel Tree program is designed to assist lowincome families who might otherwise have trouble celebrating the holiday. Local families and businesses are encouraged to adopt a paper "angel" that represents a local boy or girl in need of assistance. That means providing new clothes and toys for that child so that they can experience the spirit of
the season. The Angel Trees will be situated at various Birmingham-area shopping centers. In addition to adopting angels, people can also help out in other ways. Volunteers are needed to assist the Salvation Army at the warehouse each year to help with toy organization and distribution. And of course, volunteers are always needed to ring the bell each year for the Red Kettle Campaign. "There are an awful lot of locations, so we can always find a spot for somebody," said Brian Wallace, the Greater Birmingham Salvation Army's director of public relations. To volunteer as a bellringer, simply fill out the form online at www.birmi-
hamsalvationarmy.org or call the local Salvation Army for directions. The number for the Alabaster Salvation Army is 6637105. "If you don't have access to a computer, you can just call the Alabaster Corps and they'll direct you how to do that," said Wallace. According to Wallace, money raised each year from the campaign goes to help local programming. "Through the social services, it's providing food, clothing and shelter to the homeless, as well as additional assistance for our housing program," he said. Groups are encouraged to volunteer as well, whether it's at the ware-

On Oct. 30, the City of Alabaster hosted its secondannual Fall Walk on the Buck Creek Trail, and residents turned out in droves this year to enjoy the day. The City created the event last year to help promote the trail with a fun day of music and food. This year, with an expanded range of activities, the event turned out even better. "The first year we introduced people to the Buck Creek Trail. That was the main focus," said Ricky Nance, the Alabaster Parks and Recreation director. "This year we added a little more to it. We added arts and crafts and we added the vendors, so the turnout this year was probably double from last year." Another big hit this year was the Trick-or-Treat Trail, which gave local children a chance to put on their

ALABASTER 95 BLAZE SOCCER CLUB SUCCESS Alabaster 95 Blaze won their division in the Birmingham Bash soccer tournament. The girls played two games on Saturday winning both games (4-2, 2-1). In their semi-final game Sunday morning, the girls found themselves in a bad situation down by two goals at the half. A strong performance from everybody on the team allowed them to come back in the second half and win the game. In the championship game they faced the Briarwood U17 team, who had beaten the Blaze during the regular season. The girls knew the game would be a very hard fought defensive game, and it was. The game went into overtime, and victory was decided by a penalty kick shoot out that was
ultimately won by the Alabaster 95 Blaze. Stacy Balaam (coach) and Jeremy Stacey (assistant coach) would like to thank all the girls for their relentless effort. Special thanks to Aide Arreola for the moral support she gave her team. Aide was injured earlier in the season. Special thanks also to Mary Milliron and Michaela Graber, both team leaders and team captains, who played awesome and were supportive throughout the tournament, and have shown consistent leadership and a positive attitude throughout the season. Exceptional performances came from the forwards Miriah Poe, Marti Gornati, Madison Thomas and Gabrielle Graber. They all did an awesome job shoot-
ing on goal and hitting the back of the net. The middle of the field was controlled by Mackenzie Dowdle, Michaela Graber, Makayla Wright and Ashley Gardner. Their ability to spread the field during the attack was a key element to opening up the opposing defense. The defense played a hard tactical game with outstanding performances from Mary Milliron, Lindsey Harrison,
Savannah Barfoot, Bailey Jones, Jocelyn Medina and Calissa Knight. They did an excellent job at breaking up the attack and confusing the opposing offense. Bethany Rogers, with several saves in goal, really performed excellent, especially in the shoot-out in the championship game. She made two great saves during the shoot-out that helped seal the victory.

YMCA OPENS NEW FAMILY BRANCH The YMCA recently opened a new family branch in Alabaster off Highway 119. The new branch is housed in the old Body Shop Health Club at 117 Plaza Circle. The group purchased the building, along with its exercise equipment, in September and opened the new facility in October. "We closed on the business Sept. 30 and opened Oct. 1 as the Alabaster Family Branch YMCA," said Lane Vines, the executive director. Vines said the new facility will allow the YMCA to serve a broader range of the population here in Alabaster. "We'd wanted an adult health and wellness presence here for some time. When this opportunity came about, we were excited to take the next step, because it allowed us to serve the com-
munity from a health and wellness perspective," said Vines. The building is located adjacent to the YMCA athletic fields, which are behind the Masonic lodge. Vines said the proximity to the fields made it an attractive location. "We own 39 acres of land right in the heart of Alabaster and have used that land for many years as our soccer fields," he said. "It made sense from a strategic standpoint that this would be a good location for us to offer health and wellness programs and serve the adults in the community." According to Vines, the new building isn't the only change in the works. The YMCA's current plan is to build an adjoining building to house the children's programs. The children's programs are currently housed in the YMCA off Seventh
Street. "We have a short-term goal to get completely out of that building and locate in a new building that will adjoin the building we're in now at Plaza Circle and in addition build a six-lane pool that will serve the community for swim lessons, swim team, all kinds of aquatic programming. REUSE, REDUCE & RECYCLE These are three concepts that are very important in to both individuals and society today. The goal for reuse is to keep items useful as long as they have function and value. This can save you money and help the environment. Each time you throw an item away that is still useful, you waste money, energy, and resources. If you can no longer use an item or want a new item, please make it available to a charity organization or a friend in need. If you dispose of items that still work, it unnecessarily burdens valuable landfill space. If you are a smart shopper and buy durable items, you will be on your way to fulfilling this goal. Durable items will serve you longer and likely be more useful to others after you are done. Preventing waste by reducing your consumption can also save you money and have a positive impact on the environment. Buy only items that you are going to use and in a quantity that you can use before spoilage. Many items are less expensive in bulk quantities but if they spoil before they are used, you have wasted money and added to

LOCAL CITIZEN FIGHTS FIRE A local resident recently played a major role in putting out a dangerous fire in a utility shed that, according to neighbors, could have spread to homes in the area. Josh Wood, who lives behind the townhomes where the fire occurred, responded quickly when a neighbor's storage shed caught on fire this past September. According to neighbor Phillip Naro, Wood pushed his way through a privacy fence to get to the shed and then battled the blaze with his own fire extinguisher. "The young man grabbed a fire extinguisher and came up through the cul-de-sac. He climbed the hill barefooted, carrying a big old fire extinguisher," said Naro. "It was engulfed in flames, but he used the extinguisher and got the bulk of it down." Naro said that the quick-
acting neighbor prevented the fire from spreading to the row of townhomes along the street. "It was bad," said Naro. "If it had been another seven minutes and gotten to the townhomes, it'd have been all over. Because it was so hot it would've melted the siding off of this place and it really would've taken off." Thanks to Mr. Wood's quick actions, however, that didn't happen. "If he hadn't done what he'd done, we'd have lost everything," said Naro. According to Naro, Alabaster Fire and Rescue Service soon arrived on the scene to finish off the job. Thankfully, no one was injured.

EVERYONE HAD A GREAT TIME AT THE FALL WALK (CON’T FROM PAGE 18) Halloween costumes and collect some fun treats. "I know we had 500 trick-or-treat bags," said Nance, "and they're all gone." According to Nance, the idea this year was simply to add more fun things for people to do. "What we wanted to do was just add more to it than last year, and next year, we'll add a little more," he said. This year's Fall Walk featured a number of different arts-and-crafts vendors, including sculptor Tym Davis, photographer Gayle Kiker, Snuggy Duds by Christie Johnson, Dainty Paint by Lauren Mandle, jewelry-maker Kelly Gamble, and Angela Gillaspie. Other participants included local realtor Sue Walker, the Thompson High School Band boosters, and Sanctuary Animal
Rescue. Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q was also there, selling their tasty pork sliders and famous cheese biscuits. Owner Paul Liollio said he was excited to see the large turnout this year for the event. "They had a lot of new things to offer for the families, so I thought that was good," said Liollio. Live music was provided by 2BLU and the Lucky Stiffs, a local blues band fronted by Alabaster resident Bruce Andrews. The Parks and Recreation Department also provided a hayride between Buck Creek Park and the pavilion.

SMOKING ORDINANCE OK’D The Alabaster City Council recently passed a citywide smoking ordinance that will require city businesses to declare whether or not they will allow smoking or not. The ordinance was passed unanimously during the City Council's meeting on Oct. 21. According to City officials, the new ordinance will be implemented in 2011. Each year, when a restaurant or hotel submits its business license, it will be required to indicate whether it will be a smoking or non-smoking. The business will then be required to post a notice at each entrance to the establishment indicating its smoking status. According to officials, the ordinance represents a compromise between the two more extreme positions
that were presented. Some residents promoted a citywide smoking ban for public places, while others advocated no government intervention at all. Under the new ordinance, businesses will still be allowed to make the choice for themselves as to whether or not they want to be smoke-free. If an establishment chooses the smoke-free option, there is to be no smoking allowed at all inside the building. Those that do allow smoking, can have an area for non-smokers. The City held two public hearings on the issue before the vote. For more information, contact your local Councilperson or call City Hall at 664-6800.
CHRISTMAS PARADE DEC. 4 (CON’T FROM PAGE 14) Concert Band Festival, which is a prestigious music festival
in March, and it's attempting to raise funds to help finance the trip. "We are committed to taking everybody on this trip," said Bubbett. "It's a national honor and a national venue and these kids have worked really hard to get there." Bubbett said he expects band boosters to walk alongside the band collecting donations during the parade. No donation is too small as the students will need all the support they can get. So come on out to the parade this year. Support the Thompson High School band and get yourself in the holiday spirit. It should be a fun time for all as the partic-
ipants "Unwrap the Magic of Christmas."
The Thompson High School Band will be collecting funds along the parade route this year to fund their upcoming trip to an important band competition. The band appreciates anything you can do to help. Thanks so much for your support!!

SOUTH CITY THEATRE WINS STATE COMPETITION South City Theatre recently won a state theatre competition with its production of "Driving Miss Daisy." The play, which South City Theatre produced here in March, won the Alabama Conference of Theatre Community Theatre Festival, which was held this October in Pell City. According to South City Artistic Director Alan Gardner, this was the first time that the theatre had entered the competition. "I was very pleased that our show at the theatre was received so well with so many people that really enjoyed it," said Gardner. "Then when we talked about entering it in the state festival, I said why not?" The play was directed by Clay Boyce and featured the same cast that per-
formed the play in Alabaster. "Clay is a wonderful director," said Gardner. "I had an opportunity to bring him on board and he had a passion for it, and that's what you need." The cast included actors Robert Hill, Todd Ponder, and Carole Armistead, who won the Best Actress award at the festival for her portrayal of Daisy. "It was really outstanding acting work," said Gardner, "where she starts at one age and she ends at another and you are just captivated." The story follows the journey of Daisy Werthan, who is forced to hire a personal driver after she wreaks her car. Boyce said that all of the actors showed a great commitment to the work. "From the moment we started it way back earlier in the year, there was such a
commitment to the show. All three of the actors invested so much time and energy in making things work that it made my job easy," said Boyce. In addition to South City Theatre, there were five other theatre companies represented in the competition. Cast photo for Driving Miss They included the Pell City Daisy. Year-End Tax Tips from Essential Solutions, Inc. As 2010 comes to a close, you should take some time to review your taxes. Here are a few hints on items that may be able to lower your tax bill that should be done now instead of April 15th, when you complete your taxes. 1. Review your investments: If capital gains are high, consider taking a loss to offset some of the capital gains income or vice versa. The capital gains rate will increase in future years. If you are unsure of the rate for 2010, give us a call. 2. Defer income: Unless you have reason to believe that next year will bring you a higher income and move you into a higher personal income tax bracket, you may want to defer income until after the first of the year. If you are self-employed, for example, send the last invoices out late in December so you will more likely receive payment in January. 3. Use up your flex spending plan: If you have a flexible spending plan, which means you have put aside tax-free earnings to cover medical and dental expenses through a plan offered by your employer, you need to use it up. Make doctor appointments now and buy necessary medical supplies that are covered in the plan. 4. Pay your January 1st mortgage payment on or before December 31st: This allows you to take an additional deduction for interest paid. Give the payment time to get to your lender for 1099 reporting so don't write the check on December 31st. 5. Teachers, take a deduction from your students: You can still take up to a $250 deduction on materials purchased to make the learning experience better for your students. This deduction is also applicable for principals and others who are employed in a school. Anything over the $250.00 can be deducted on your schedule A. Keep your receipts. 6. If you're self-employed, stock up: This is the time to buy all of the business equipment and supplies you haven't yet purchased. Make sure to mark and save your receipts. 7. Make charitable donations: If you have extra cash, donate money to charity. Save the receipts and use the charitable donations as deductions on your tax return. These are some of the ways in which you can make appropriate changes to lessen your tax bill; however, there may be more, depending on your situation. If you are uncertain, please give us a call and we will be happy to discuss other alternatives that may be beneficial to you.
