Cooking with Glow

Second Friday of the Month, 1:15pm, $21

Class size is limited to 5-8 participants as these cooking demonstrations are held in the MAYC commercial kitchen. Each month, participants will select a future dish from Glo’s list to be prepared on site. Choices are varied from Asian to Middle Eastern, Mexican, Italian, Mediterranean, and more. Glo will bring in all the supplies and show you how to prepare each dish. You will be able to enjoy eating what has been prepared and know how to prepare these dishes in the future. Face masks are required during the class and are available if you need one. Reserve your spot early.

Live 2B Healthy Fitness Classes

Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 1:15-2pm

Free to those with Silver and Fit, Silver Sneakers, One Pass, or Renew Activity. Other insurances may offer reduced prices. Stop by to observe a class to see if it is the right fit for you. A certified instructor will lead a variety of exercises that can be done seated or standing. Modifications are offered so that classes are geared for all ability levels. Weights, exercise bands, balls, and movements make each class unique. To get the most benefit, attending two to three classes each week is recommended.

Heart Month Party and Wheel of Fortune

Friday, February 17, 11am

Register for lunch and come early to play the MAYC version of Wheel of Fortune. This rousing game of solving word puzzles will be played at dining tables prior to lunch. Categories will be revealed for each puzzle. Contestants take turns guessing a vowel or consonant and if it is in the puzzle, it will be put on the puzzle board and one more letter may be guessed before being asked to solve the puzzle. If several players think they can solve the puzzle, the host will decide if they can answer as a group. “Good neighbor” rules apply; one prize per person maximum. A fun, and fairly non-competitive game, register in advance and enjoy some pre-lunch refreshments at 11AM in honor of heart month!

Planting Succulents

Thursday, February 16, 1-2:30pm

Sponsored and brought to you by Allina Health and Aetna, this fun class will be hands on. You will get to take your new succulent home to keep or give as a gift. Movie of the Month

Ticket to Paradise

Thursday, February 16, 1pm

Rated PG-13, this romantic comedy will be shown on a large screen TV in honor of heart month!

George Clooney and Julia Roberts star in this fun film about a divorced couple who find themselves on a shared mission: to stop their lovestruck daughter from making the same mistake they once made. There will be a short intermission mid-movie to enjoy popcorn. Register in advance to attend.

Country Music Jubilee Performers Needed

The North Country Jamboree leader, Dan Fish, is looking for accomplished musical performers to join this show in March. Landmark Tours Travel Show

Wednesday, February 8, 1pm

Leave your worries behind as you travel by plane to exotic and entertaining destinations! This travel company is high quality and utilized by many area senior centers. Expect full itineraries with 4-5 star accommodations. Upon arrival at the airport, a Landmark Tours representative will take it from there. Register to attend this informational session with plenty of time to answer questions as you review the full color trip brochures. Advanced registration preferred.

Looking for assistance with your electronic device? Help is just a phone call away! One-hour appointments are available with Amy, a knowledgeable volunteer who will help you navigate your tablet, laptop, or smartphone. Indicate your device at time of registration, which is required in advance.

Defensive Driving Refresher Classes

Specified Thursdays, 8:45am-1pm, $25

Four-hour refresher classes will be held on specified Thursdays. Classes fill quickly, so plan ahead and register early. These classes are led by an instructor from the MN Highway Safety and Research Center. Participants receive a discount of 10 percent on car insurance for three years from the date of taking this class, in addition to learning new tips for driving safely. Upcoming classes on February 9, March 9, April 13, May 18, and June 8.

Home Movie Transfers

First Week of Each Month

The first week of each month, Blaine older adults age 55+ can stop by the Mary Ann Young Center during business hours to drop off personal VHS tapes, home movies, photos, 8mm or 16mm film reels, slides, and the like for North Metro TV staff to pick up. They will transfer the content to a DVD within one to two months so that you can preserve your keepsakes. There is no cost for the first DVD. Extra fees apply for additional copies. Clearly mark your items with your name and phone number so that you can be notified when the DVDs are returned to the MAYC. No copyrighted material is accepted. A form identifying the type and number of items you are dropping off needs to be completed at the MAYC before being sent to be transferred to DVD.

Income Tax Assistance

Tuesdays by Appointment February 7 - April 11, 9am-12pm

The AARP Tax-Aide Program with certified IRS volunteers, will offer in-person income tax assistance appointments at the MAYC on Tuesdays, concentrating on low-income 50+ members of the community. Registration by phone is required by calling 763-786-9375. Appointment slots are expected to fill quickly. Those with an appointment will need to pick up a packet at the MAYC during business hours, in advance of your scheduled appointment day. There is a list of items needed and forms to be completed that are included in the packet. Bring completed documents as indicated in the packet, as well as your photo I.D., last year’s completed taxes, and proof of social security. This is a one-time, 30-minute appointment so please have all your documents in order when you arrive at your scheduled time.

Closed Caption Phone Demonstration

Thursday, February 23, 10am-12pm

Do you have difficulty hearing conversations on the phone? Help has arrived. Join Paul Kerr from CaptionCall for this informational session that will demonstrate just how easy it is to operate closed caption phones. You can register following the session for a phone and set up a time and date to have it installed, all for free! Advanced registration required
