We’ll offer you access to: Expert training and job coaching Fantastic employers A focus on employment from day one Ongoing support
Internship programmes
Supported internship programmes are made up of classroom and workplace learning, 9am – 4pm, over 4 or 5 days a week. They are year-long study programmes for young people aged 18-24 who have learning difficulties and/or autism and who want to find paid employment. Our Project Search and Internship programmes are structured to achieve lasting paid employment by equipping young people with the skills they need for work, through learning in the workplace. Alongside their time with the employer, young people follow a personalised study programme, which includes the chance to study for a qualification and, if appropriate, English and Maths. Work placements include on-the-job training with expert job coaches who are responsible for supporting both interns and their employers. At the end of the year the interns may continue to work with their job coach who will support them to find employment that utilises the skills and experience they have gained from the programme. An extended work placement is the most important part of a supported internship because it gives a young person with learning difficulties and/or autism the chance to show that they can perform a real job in a real workplace. Who is it for:
Students with learning difficulties and/or autism, who have an EHCP and want paid employment in the community.
Duration of Programmes: One college year (September to June) with a rotation through multiple/typically three unpaid work placements.

Supported Internships at City of Bristol College
Employment facts People with learning difficulties and/or Autism are less likely to have a job than the general population. Fewer than 6% of adults with learning disabilities are in paid work (NHS Digital 2021) and only 22% of autistic adults are in any kind of employment (ONS 2021). Since setting up our internship programmes in 2012, 74% of the interns who completed a supported internship have been successful in finding paid employment. The internship programmes are a working partnership between intern, employer, tutor and job coach to enable valuable experiences of work and the development of an employment plan that will support the intern during the transition from education to work.
