Dear colleagues,
I
It can sometimes be easy to forget to fully celebrate key achievements but I want to reflect on the wonderful staff and student awards held at the end of last year. There were so many deserving winners in our staff awards and you can read more on page 11. We also presented the annual Student Awards online again this year. Students and parents watched the event online with more than 500 viewers seeing the great achievements. Thank you to all staff who nominated students, we had a record number of nominations this year, making the process event harder to select our overall winners.
hope you had an enjoyable and restful summer, although now we are back into our busy period I know the summer break feels far behind us.
I would like to personally thank everyone for their support at this time. I appreciate that when there is a change in leadership this can sometimes cause uncertainty, and I hope that my recent email re-assured you that there are no other significant changes planned. Myself, Paul and Joanne appreciated the opportunity to talk with those who attended the drop-in sessions, and just to reiterate that our doors are always open. These drop-in sessions will become a regular feature during the course of this year, and we will also be launching some ‘workshop sessions’ where we can seek colleagues’ views as we look to review and update our Strategic Plan for the next few years; please look out for news on these sessions and on other ways you can contribute. It has been a rather different start to the term, with result days being earlier this year and the impact this has had on the enrolment period. We are looking fairly good with our 16-18 numbers, but still need to enrol around 200 more students to meet our target. As always, there are some courses which are more popular than anticipated and some which have under-recruited and need further promotion. It is important that we provide advice and guidance to students to guide them onto the course which is right for them. We need to push our Higher Education provision but have a little more time as these courses start later this month, and if there is anything you can do to support awareness of our HE offer with your employer contacts that would be much appreciated. The success of our enrolment is critical, and we must ensure we all do all that we can to continue to welcome students into the College and ensure their start with us is organised, happy and successful.

It has been particularly enjoyable seeing students join and return to the College in person after having had to learn remotely for such an extended period last year. We know that young people were hugely affected by the pandemic and while we are still acutely aware of the risks around Covid-19 and continue to follow government guidance at all times, it has been great to see so many smiling faces over the past few weeks as our students return to what we hope to be a more normal year for all of us. There has been a hive of activity at the Advanced Construction Skills Centre which is now open for our inaugural cohort of students. The Centre opened on time and on budget and looks superb; we are confident our students will have a very positive experience in the new facilities. We have secured sponsorship from a number of employers and are proud to have Vistry Partnerships as our headline sponsor for the Centre. We are working with them on a range of activities including apprenticeships and encouraging more females into construction courses. We have also started events again in the College and at the end of last term we hosted our Construction Question Time breakfast event and last week hosted our Construction Breakfast meeting, both attracting around 30 employers.
Student satisfaction is important to us and as a team we are going through the key areas where students have said we could improve. These include enrichment activities, which now such activities can return, we will be investing in across the course of this year. There are many aspects of the College that students are exceptionally happy with and you can read on this inside. We have received great coverage on the BBC and ITV recently. Study Coach, Jane Edwards, was interviewed live on BBC Radio Bristol’s morning show and BBC News Points West’s evening show on GCSE results day. She spoke about the advice we give to students following their exam results. I featured in ITV News West Country, having been filmed in the Advanced Construction Skills Centre and specifically focussing on what the College is doing to encourage more females into construction courses. Simon Arnold and some of our apprentices from DAF and Business Administration were interviewed and also featured on ITV News West Country focussing on apprenticeship vacancies and how the sector is shaping post-pandemic. If you did not see this, you can watch here. Last week we featured on ITV for hosting pop-up vaccination centres at our College Green Centre and South Bristol Skills Academy and it was good to support other measures we are taking to keep the College community safe.
We have a range of events taking place in the coming weeks and months and full details will follow. Highlights include the formal opening of the Advanced Construction Skills Centre. We will also be celebrating our 25th Jubilee Birthday as City of Bristol College and will be hosting events at each centre so all staff can join in the celebrations. Finally, as colleagues will know, this is a big year for our College. We want 2021/22 to be the year when we get it right and once again become recognised, after too long a time, as the type of college that our fantastic city and our even more fantastic students deserve. I am confident that we have all the right ingredients in place to achieve this – the right facilities, the right plans and the right people – and that if we work together then we will reach our goals for the year ahead. Thank you for all of your hard-work and commitment in our shared endeavour.

Payday Parkrun Are you a runner, and do you fancy getting out and about with like-minded colleagues? Join the Payday Parkrun team! As Parkrun is finally restarting across the country, some of City of Bristol College’s running community have decided to regularly meet up once a month for a free 5k run at various locations across Bristol. Lecturer Ludvig Asenius said: “Parkrun was absolutely dynamite! I’ve been telling everyone it’s a terrific way to meet your colleagues in a completely different setting and start your weekend perfectly”
ESOL team hope to raise hundreds for refugees This September, a team of our ESOL teachers will be taking part in a Miles For Refugees event to raise money for the British Red Cross to support refugees in the UK. The team of 10 teachers will be walking, cycling and running throughout September to raise money to help support the Red Cross in their work distributing food parcels and supporting refugee families to be reunited with their loved ones. The Red Cross also helps with access to accommodation, healthcare, mobile phones and more, all in a bid to make the UK a home away from home. You can support the teachers and see how they’re doing by visiting their page here. Anonymous donation One of our members of staff has done something amazing with their staff award prize this year. The member of staff, who asked to remain anonymous, donated their £50 prize win to a charity close to their heart. This is such an uplifting story and a great way to raise awareness of the crowdfunding page they have. The campaign the member of staff donated to is called ‘New Home for Gloria’. You can read more about it here. There is no request for staff to donate but this is a great example of how important it is to celebrate our colleagues and giving back. 7

Bristol Talent is a new joint venture between City of Bristol College and South Gloucestershire & Stroud College. The aim of the project is to work in collaboration to collectively grow our apprenticeship market share within the City. We are keen to engage key employers across the city to become a partner of Bristol Talent to help shape the next generation workforce from our pool of full-time students! Employers who become a part of Bristol Talent will be committing to working in synergy with all faculties in both colleges where relevant to their industry sector.

Departments pause and reflect in the past year At the end of the Summer term, staff were invited to take part in ‘pause and reflect’ sessions. The Hair and Beauty team gathered around food and some soft drinks for their ‘pause and reflect’. One member of staff said: “It’s been lovely to share time, experiences and talk things over to prepare for the coming weeks.” The reason was to cover four ‘decompression’ elements, namely: 1. Reflect on your experience 2. Consider any lessons learned 3. Recognise your achievements 4. Enjoy social activities as a team In Marketing, the seven-strong team spent the morning completing team building tasks and reviewing the year, including sharing experiences from our own work and personal perspective. This included what lessons we have learned and how we will improve in the next academic year. In the afternoon, the team took part in a game of bowling for a bit of fun and some friendly competition!
We want to break down barriers and bridge the skills gap so that our students are confident in moving from education into employment via the apprenticeship route. Employers will support students by offering work placements, guest lectures, interviews & employability advice, support at events and much more. We want employers to become an integral part of what we offer so that by studying with either City of Bristol College or SGS College, students can progress into employment and keep their new-found skills in Bristol to the benefit of the local area. If you would like to find out more please contact me donna.kenny@sgscol.ac.uk I look forward to meeting you all over the coming month and as the project evolves!
Floristry programmes nominated for Training Provider of the Year City of Bristol College’s floristry programmes, which are taught at South Bristol Skills Academy, have been nominated as Training Provider of the Year! The British Florist Association (BFA) Industry Awards contacted lecturer Victoria Veasey in July to inform her of this exciting nomination. The College is one of 23 shortlisted providers. The winner will be announced at a special dinner on Saturday, 30 October at the Jurys Inn in Hinckley. Share the news! @cityofbristolcollege @COBCollege @cityofbristolcollege

Vending machine hot drinks As some of you will be aware, the offer of free hot drinks from the vending machines for staff came to an end in August.
Comments can be left anonymously and all comments will be read. If you require a response to your comment, please leave a contact email address.
However, there is good news! The price of a hot drink from the vending machine has been reduced to £1 per cup, but to support the College’s sustainability promise, there is a 40p discount available if you use your own cup. Want to save even more money? If you use your staff ID card to purchase a hot drink (you can do this by using the VMC app), then you will receive a further 50p discount. This means, if you do the above, you will only pay 10p per cup, up to 10 drinks per day! Now that is a lot of caffeine to help you through the day!
College receives next level of cyber accreditation The College has now obtained the next level of CyberEssentials security accreditation, and we are now CyberEssentials Plus certified. This required an independent audit by an IASME (the awarding body) certified auditor. Head of ICT Network and Engineering Services, Dale Simpkins, said: “The team have worked very hard to attain this level of certification; we had to achieve 100 per cent compliance in all areas tested. At this level, you either pass or fail. The certification must be complete within 90 days of gaining CyberEssentials, otherwise you have to re-register and start from scratch at the base level.” Well done to everyone involved!

If you have feedback, a comment, or a suggestion on how we can improve, please make use of this form. The form can be access from a College or personal device and links to it will be available on the Staff Intranet.

uly was a particularly busy month for the College with students finishing and summer holidays approaching, but it was also a month of celebrations for staff and students. The College hosted its Staff and Student Award ceremonies, both virtually, and recognised the hard work and dedication of the students and staff, especially those who had overcome challenges over the past year.
STAFF AWARDS 2021 The annual Staff Awards were held on the College’s final CPD day, with various members of the College Leadership Team announcing the winners. The Staff Awards are held each year, with colleagues nominating each other in the categories. For a full list of winners, click here

We were on
the news! C
ity of Bristol College had fantastic news coverage in August when reporters and camera crew from BBC News Points West and ITV News West Country visited three of its Centres. Firstly, it was the turn of ITV News West Country, who were working on a piece with a former The Apprentice contestant on attracting women into the construction industry. Acting Principal and Chief Executive Rich Harris was interviewed at the new Advanced Construction Skills Centre alongside Vistry Partnerships’ Charlotte Olver. Rich’s interview appeared on the 6pm news as part of a wider story.
It was then over to BBC News Points West on GCSE results day, where the Marketing team was approached asking for a careers specialist to be interviewed live on air. Study Coach Jane Edwards was available and was interviewed not just once, but twice – firstly on BBC Radio Bristol in the morning and then at the Points West headquarters in Clifton. Jane spoke about career routes both at the College and beyond and gave reassurance to students who didn’t get the grades they expected and their parents. It was then over to ITV again where journalist Richard Payne spent a whole day at the South Bristol Skills Academy and at the Motor Vehicle Centre at Parkway, interviewing two apprentices (including a DAF apprentice), the College’s Director of Business and Commercial Partnerships, Simon Arnold and employer partner Alex Stroud from DAF. The piece featured as the lead story on the news and spanned across almost four minutes. You can watch the full story here

Construction centre sponsors
sign on the dotted line
C
ity of Bristol College is very excited to announce three sponsors of the brand new, £9m Advanced Construction Skills Centre.
Vistry Partnerships has signed a three-year sponsorship deal with the College, which will see the construction employer working alongside students and apprentices. The College and Vistry have already worked together on a range of projects including the Lockleaze Academy, supporting women into construction and promoting apprenticeship routes.
Roma Watson wearing her new high-vis.
Rich Harris, Principal and Chief Executive at the College, said: “We are delighted Vistry Partnerships are sponsoring the new Centre. Working together provides great opportunities for students including work experience, mentoring and, after their studies, potential employment. We are keen to work with as wide a range of employers as possible to give students real-life insight into the construction sector.” The College has also secured Hays Recruitment as the provider of the high-visibility jackets, which will be provided to each student and apprentice studying a construction course at the Centre. Beard Construction has sponsored a workshop and their branding will feature soon. Do you have contacts in the construction industry who would be interested in sponsoring our new Centre? Please share our sponsorship pack with any contacts you may have.
Workshop named to honour colleague Many staff at City of Bristol College will remember Lee Sheriton as a dedicated member of staff who sadly passed away in December 2018 after a battle with cancer. Lee, who championed the College both during outside of working hours, worked as a Body Paint lecturer at the former Soundwell Centre at the Motor Vehicle Centre at Parkway. He also Head of Department for Motor Vehicle Body and Paint.
and and and was and
To honour Lee, who was known by many as a ‘caring’ individual who would ‘go over and above for the students’, the motor vehicle workshop at the new £9m Advanced Construction Skills Centre has been named ‘The Lee Sheriton Motor Vehicle Workshop’ in his memory. This is in addition to the Lee Sheriton Award for Endeavour which is given to a student who emulates Lee’s determination and dedication despite all the odds. It is hoped the College will be able to welcome Lee’s family to the new workshop in the future. 15

Marketing update Marketing our great College
25 years at City of Bristol College
It is always hard to stand out among the noise when colleges are advertising during the summer period.
While we go back way beyond 25 years, we will be celebrating 25 years as City of Bristol College in the next month. Keep an eye on our LinkedIn and emails for updates on this.
Our summer campaign started in July and runs to the middle of September. You might have seen a billboard, ad van, ad bike or bus advert, or maybe you have heard our adverts on local radio or seen our digital campaign online. If you have young people in your house, they might have heard us on Spotify, or seen our new TikTok channel. But, if you have not seen us at all, please be assured our targeted advertising campaign has been in full swing. We have advanced the production of the Young Persons course guide and this is due back from the printers in the next few days. This is critical for our School Liaison Officer, Lauren Ryan, who will start visiting year 11 students across Bristol and beyond very soon.
City of Bristol College supports local football team City of Bristol College is proud to sponsor Keynsham Town Junior Football Club! The club, coached by our own IT guru Rocky Kelly, has benefited from new shirts thanks to a £500 sponsorship deal with the College. The football shirts have been branded with the City of Bristol College logo and will be worn by the youngsters during their home and away matches each week over the next two years.
We have a new Events Officer, Erin Hewitt, who will be focussing on our Open Events among many others, with the first one next month!
Please don’t make your own collateral Just a gentle reminder from the Marketing team – please do not make your own posters, postcards, flyers etc. The College employs a brilliant Senior Graphic Designer, Matthew Grigg, and his new graphic design apprentice, Daniel Chilcott, who are ready to support with all your creative needs! Please approach the Marketing team with your requirements, including agreed words, deadline and manager sign off. Please ensure to give the team at least two weeks’ notice to complete the work so it can be created to the best standard possible and inkeeping with the College’s brand guidelines. 19
Website Please continue to let us know if anything needs updating! We do a number of checks but things do get missed and we do not always know if things have changed. Just email the team at website@cityofbristol.ac.uk and they will respond to you as soon as possible.
Safeguarding update As we return to what feels very close to normal college life, we just wanted to make everyone aware of what we have on offer to support student safeguarding and wellbeing. In addition to the pastoral support provide by Study Coaches, Personal Tutors and the ALS team, we are also able to support students on a one-to-one basis with safeguardingrelated issues such as mental health, issues at home, concerns around exploitation etc. We have now recruited two counsellors to join the Safeguarding Team, which will bring this service in-house for the first time. We have also purchased the TogetherAll wellbeing platform for a further year, which students and staff can access by using a college email address.
Just to reiterate that the above support is available to all students, whether they are FE, HE, apprentices or adults. For referrals, we have the MyConcern system in place so please check your logins are still working and that you can remember your passwords etc. As a reminder, this system is external to the College so you will need to set up your own login details. If anyone needs support to access this system please email Jonny.elphinstone@cityofbristol.ac.uk or Annette.Easy@cityofbristol.ac.uk for support. Finally, please be aware of how you communicate regarding our students both in terms of safeguarding and generally. If you are not using MyConcern and emailing with queries etc, please use student initials and student number only. Please ensure that no conversations about students are happening in communal areas or where they can be overheard and please make sure that when reporting safeguarding concerns, you are only reporting factual information pertinent to the concern, or making it clear that it is your view rather than fact. Correct reporting of this nature helps the team to triage and manage cases effectively and also protects you should a data access request be made. If anyone has any questions regarding this please feel free to call Jonny Elphinstone via Teams to discuss in more detail.
