City property tax rate remains the same The new fiscal year budget, which began on Oct. 1, features investment in public safety by way of $835,000 to adjust the city’s step plan for public safety employees. This will allow the city to remain competitive in the metroplex public safety employee market. Investments in parks and recreation include funding for additional sections of trails for pedestrians and cyclists. The city will continue the five-year neighborhood street rehabilitation program along with the annual sidewalk program that provides the city’s youth safe routes to school. The library will receive new computer desks, electronic screens and new software to assist patrons checking out books. And public works will be receiving a new aerial bucket truck to assist in the traffic maintenance division. The city will also be adding a position in the criminal investigation division, a firefighter, a GIS position in support services and a plans examiner position. Your city tax rate remains the same at 73.5 cents. The base water and wastewater rate have increased an average of 5.5 percent. There is no change in your trash/curbside recycling rate. Fire Department ranks as one of the top in the nation Effective December 1, 2017, Burleson homeowners and local business owners may qualify to receive a lower insurance rate as a result of the ISO rating score earned by the Burleson Fire Department. The City joins the top 1% of communities in the US for excellence in fire protection. Only 1 in 33 cities in Texas have received an ISO 1 rating. “This upgrade reflects the hard work and dedication of Burleson firefighters to save lives and property every day,” said Fire Chief K.T. Freeman. “And Burleson’s city council’s commitment to providing top-notch public safety to this community.”

Johnson Avenue construction update The Johnson Avenue construction is projected to wrap up in January 2018. The project was needed to add new water line infrastructure and address much-needed drainage improvements along the street. The 2.26 million dollar project began in July and is on target for its six-month completion schedule. We appreciate our community’s patience and will be happy to fully reopen Johnson Avenue soon.

Burleson launches one-of-a-kind employment program Burleson Works, a program of the Burleson Opportunity Fund, was launched as a tool to provide career growth through technical education. The program is designed to provide an avenue for companies and citizens in our community to connect with one another and fill the skills gap in our labor market. This will be made possible through partnerships with local and regional schools where the student will obtain skills and certifications to gain employment in our region. The program provides funding for students who are interested in working in a technical field such as industrial maintenance, software development, welding, automotive and many others. Applications will be accepted starting Jan. 1, 2018. Learn more, burlesonworks.com
