Step Back In Time

For more than 100 years, the Riverview Lands have been home to Riverview Hospital (formerly known as Essondale), a place of healing for those with mental illness. Today, it’s a renowned heritage site with a treasured arboretum that includes more than 1,800 trees planted in the early 1900s as part of the province’s first botanical garden. rhcs.org

oquitlam is part of the core territory of the Kwikwetlem First Nation people and lies within the shared Traditional Territories of the TsleilWaututh, Katzie, Musqueam, Squamish and Stó:lō nations. While explorer Simon Fraser passed through the area in 1808, European settlers didn’t arrive until the 1860s. The first sawmill opened in 1889 and the District of Coquitlam was incorporated in 1891. These 9 locations tell the stories of Coquitlam’s rich history. Learn about the city’s early settlers and discover interesting facts about Coquitlam’s heritage.

Mackin House Museum

Mackin House is one of the last remaining homes built by the Canadian Western Lumber Company Ltd. It was first occupied in 1909 by Henry James Mackin, the mill’s general sales manager, and his family. Today, you can take a step back in time by wandering through the rooms to see how people lived during the early 1900s. coquitlamheritage.ca

Riverview Lands

Maillardville Walking Tour

At the end of the 19th century, Frank Ross and James McLaren opened the state-of-the-art Ross-McLaren Sawmill (later known as Fraser Mills). By 1908, a mill town developed around it, and French-Canadian timbermen from Quebec and Ontario were recruited with the promise of jobs and housing. The community they built was called Maillardville, named in honour of the first parish priest, Father Edmond Maillard. To explore the neighbourhood on a selfguided walk, pick up a tour brochure at Mackin House. Walk toward Carré Heritage Square, which marks the historic entrance to Fraser Mills. Visit the Fraser Mills Station and Place des Arts, Coquitlam’s community arts centre and music school based at Ryan House, a turn-of-the-century residence. Take a peek inside Our Lady of Lourdes, a church built in 1938 on the site of the original church, built in 1910.

Colony Farms

The Province purchased the land for Colony Farm and Essondale Hospital in 1904. Colony Farm opened in 1910 and served as a provincial demonstration farm that served the needs of the hospital that opened in 1913. Colony Farm Regional Park is now managed by Metro Vancouver and hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including nature walks and educational tours. metrovancouver.org

Minnekhada Regional Park & Minnekhada Lodge

Minnekhada Regional Park serves as a popular hiking, filming and wedding location. Minnekhada Lodge dates back to 1895 and had many owners until it was purchased in 1932 by Eric Hamber (president of B.C. Mills, Timber & Trading Co.), the 15th Lieutenant Governor of B.C. During the 1930s, it became home to a polo club and hunting lodge. Hamber played host to many affluent guests. It’s rumoured that King George VI and Queen Elizabeth stayed there in 1939. Minnekhada was donated to the Greater Vancouver Regional District (now Metro Vancouver) in 1984 and became a regional park. metrovancouver.org

Robinson Memorial Cemetery

Among its first burials in 1937, there is a large area of unmarked graves where many patients from Essondale (Riverview Hospital) were buried during the Great Depression. You’ll also find the grave of Emery Barnes – one of the first black politicians elected in B.C.

SPARC Radio Museum

ARCHIVES Visit the City of Coquitlam

Mundy Park

In 1895, George and Jane Munday, who emigrated from Hampshire, England, were granted 150 acres of land, some of which would eventually come to be known as Mundy Park. For reasons unknown, the “a” was dropped from their name and Mundy was used instead. Today, the 400-acre urban forest is Coquitlam’s largest park.

Westwood Plateau / Racetrack

Did you know Coquitlam was home to Canada’s first purpose-built road-racing track? Located on Westwood Plateau, it ran 32 seasons from 1959 to 1990. Racing legend Michael Andretti set the fastest lap time on May 21, 1983. Several street names in the residential Westwood Plateau area are named after parts of the track (i.e. Deers Leap Place and Carousel Court).

Archives at 1171 Pinetree Way, next to Coquitlam Public Library, to learn about the city’s history, view displays and consult archival materials. The Archives acquires, preserves and makes accessible the records of businesses, organizations and private individuals that are of significance to the municipality and deemed worthy of long-term preservation. coquitlam.ca/archives

The Crunch

ave you climbed the Coquitlam Crunch? This fitness hike is one to add to your bucket list, featuring more than 400 stairs and an incline trail that gains 250 metres in 2.2 km. That’s the equivalent of 81 storeys! Here are 5 reasons to try it.

High intensity level: If you want to challenge yourself with stair repeats, this is the place. The Crunch features two sets of stairs – 894 steps in total – for the ultimate cardio circuit workout. Moderate intensity level: Your other option is to climb just one set of stairs and continue on the gravel trail that follows the power lines up to Westwood Plateau. This entire loop up to the top and back down to the base takes approximately 1-1.5 hours to complete.

nleash the hounds for some tail-wagging fun. You’ll find six off-leash play areas throughout the city where our four-legged friends can run. Mundy Park One of the largest is at picturesque Mundy Park, where, in the southeast corner of the 400-acre urban forest, is not only a fenced dog park area but an off-leash trail loop dedicated to dogs that takes about 20-30 minutes to walk.

Please ‘paws’ to consider Mundy Park’s dog rules:

• Note that elsewhere in the park, on-leash rules apply. • Due to the sensitive habitat of the 1.7-km Nature Trail, dogs aren’t allowed along that route. • Leashes are required on paved community pathways, playground and sports field areas. • In the remaining forested areas with trails, dogs will be allowed off-leash, but only from dawn to 10 a.m.

Bramble Park If you’re in the Westwood Plateau area, Bramble Park (2775 Panorama Dr.) is an off-leash destination with a fenced area in the southern section, between Panorama Drive and David Avenue. Glen Park Do you have a small dog? Head to Glen Park (1149 Westwood St.), which has separate off-leash areas for small and large dogs. Leigh Park Leigh Park (1254 Soball St.) has separate play areas for large and small dogs. As well, it has picnic areas and an off-road cycling course, which can make the day out perfect for all members of your family, be it on two or four legs – or two wheels. Ridge Park If you and your dog enjoy the challenge of a hike, Ridge Park (1685 Parkway Blvd.) has a dedicated off-leash trail along part of its 4.5-km loop. Miller Park The eastern portion of Miller Park (870 Oakview St.) features a sizeable, unfenced stretch of open grass to let your dog run.

he secret is out. Coquitlam is home to some of the best playgrounds in Metro Vancouver.

Rochester Park Monkey around at this incredible park based on an outdoor nature play theme. It even has a climbing wall and a zipline, plus tunnel slides and saucer swings, with accessible features. The park includes a skate spot, a sand play area and a water play area during summer. Town Centre Park This local kid favourite has an accessible play area, spray park, skatepark and more. Queenston Park The hugely popular neighbourhood playground is built into the side of a hill, so kids can clamber up to the “summit” and slide down over and over again. The best feature is a long metal slide for little daredevils, although there are also features for younger kids. Declared one of the Great Places in Canada, this park is a year-round destination

o take a look around Town Centre Park today, it may be hard to believe that it was once the site of a gravel pit. Now recognized as one of Canada’s greatest outdoor places, this park is one of Coquitlam’s top destinations, where festivals, sporting events and recreational activity attract people from far and wide. Its transformation began in the 1970s when Lafarge Company excavated Lafarge Lake and donated it to the City of Coquitlam. The Province later donated the surrounding land, and Town Centre Park was born in May 1989. Lafarge Lake is now a picturesque spot, regularly stocked with rainbow trout for fishing, and bobbing with birdlife and turtles. A short walk from the water’s edge is the Inspiration Garden, offering pops of colour, plus the iconic bee living eco-sculpture. Also, don’t miss the Chief of the Undersea World eco-scultpture, depicting the famous Bill Reid killer whale statue (located north of Guildford on Pinetree Way). See page 27 for more info.

Live Entertainment You can catch concerts and festivals in the great outdoors at the TD Community Plaza – an amphitheatre overlooking Lafarge Lake. It offers seating for up to 1,300 plus grassy spaces to kick back on a picnic blanket or lawn chairs.

Sports Highlights The park regularly hosts largescale events and sporting tournaments, drawing crowds in the tens of thousands. SCULPTURES Chief of the Undersea World One of Coquitlam’s most intriguing “green” landmarks is a living sculpture located in Town Centre Park. The killer whale, which was part of the MosaïCanada 150 exposition in Gatineau, Que., is modelled after the famous Bill Reid statue. Bee Eco-Sculpture Bee inspired. This iconic living sculpture at Inspiration Garden is constructed of a steel frame with fabric and filled with plant material. It blooms from June to early October.

SAFETY TIPS Mundy Park Minnekhada Regional Park Interested in spectacular views, oldgrowth forest and incredible wildlife? Walking through this 200-hectare park feels incredibly remote when, in fact, it’s only a few kilometres from City Centre. Wildlife is abundant, including toads, birdlife and even black bears. Choose the easy hike to the Low Knoll or take on the more challenging hike to the High Knoll (allow at least 2 ½ hours) for a satisfying lookout over the wetlands. Westwood Plateau / Eagle Mountain Those looking for a challenge can try the Ridge Park Trails on Westwood Plateau. This 23-km trail network can be accessed from multiple locations, including Parkway Boulevard and Hampton Park. While many have manageable slopes, take care on gravel surfaces and steeper sections. Eagle Mountain is also known for its mountain biking trails. Pinecone Burke Provincial Park This park is for experienced hikers seeking adventure – minus the crowds. The Woodland Walk Trail is a favourite, leading to the stunning Sawblade Falls (approximately 8 km round-trip). Due to the remote trails in this area, hikers are advised to trek in groups with

knowledgeable leaders. Note that this park is also a popular spot for mountain biking (see visitcoquitlam.ca/biking). Coquitlam Crunch This heart-pumping uphill fitness trail is an iconic local favourite. See page 17 for details.

Easy walk or run routes Mundy Park A favourite among runners, this 400-acre rainforest park features 16 km of trails and plentiful tree cover, offering shade in summer and a rain barrier in fall. Mundy is also home to regional races and is a popular dog-walking spot. See page 21. Colony Farm Regional Park Stroll or run the 8.5+ km of flat trails through wide meadows and fields. Bird watchers flock to this 400-hectare-plus park to spot rare birdlife including great blue herons, purple martins and the elusive lazuli bunting. Coquitlam River This 9.8 km trail network follows the river, offering a peaceful place to walk or run within City Centre.

Coquitlam has a lively mountain biking scene, not to mention 60+ km of trails, paths and greenways throughout the city, offering many options to explore on two wheels. From family rides to daily commutes and high-energy technical rides, here are some of the best places to explore.

Easy Rides Sit back for some easy rides with great views. Check out these scenic trails worth exploring. Mundy Park is home to 16 km of trails meandering around the lush, forested park with two picturesque lakes. The Coquitlam River Trail network, which is easily accessed from Lafarge Lake-Douglas SkyTrain station, offers forested terrain with wide gravel trails, bridges and river views.

DeBoville Slough is a popular spot for weekend rides, where you can spot eagles and herons while cruising this long, flat, gravel trail. Trent Hutton’s sculpture ‘TransLake’ at Lafarge Lake-Douglas Skytrain Station

Here are some highlights. Salmon Sculptures A series of 12 salmon sculptures was permanently installed throughout the city in 2016 as part of a public art project celebrating Coquitlam’s 125th year. The six-foot-high sculpture form was designed and fabricated by award-winning Squamish Nation artist Jody Broomfield. Each was then painted by a different B.C. artist. SkyTrain Evergreen Extension Public Artworks Look for the large concrete frog rising out of the sidewalk outside of Lafarge Lake-Douglas Station. Titled TransLake, by Trent Hutton of Bowen Island, this piece is one of 11 inspirational works installed at Coquitlam’s four SkyTrain stations. It depicts Lafarge Lake’s transformation from a rock quarry to the picturesque landscape it is today.

Blue Mountain Park Sculpture Garden (photo right) Like a secret garden, there’s something special about this rock sculpture and fountain. You’ll find six sculptures at Blue Mountain Park — let your imagination run wild as you explore.

Return of the Sockeye (photo below) “Return of the Sockeye” anchors Coquitlam Spirit Square and tells the story of the small red salmon that were genetically unique to and prevalent in the Coquitlam River at the turn of the 20th century. Spirit Bear, Place des Arts The Coquitlam Spirit Bear (Stól: lô Spath) translates to River Bear and depicts the spirits of the animals and symbols that speak of growing up beside the mighty Fraser River.

Coquitlam is an easy 40-minute drive from downtown Vancouver the scenic Barnet Highway, Highway 1 (Trans Canada Hwy.) or Highway 7 (Lougheed Hwy.). The Port Mann Bridge connects Coquitlam to Surrey and the Fraser Valley with easy access to multiple border crossings.

SkyTrain Coquitlam has four SkyTrain stations. It takes approximately 45 minutes to travel to Vancouver and 55 minutes to Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver. SkyTrain’s Evergreen Extension connects with the Canada Line for direct access to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in Richmond.

West Coast Express The West Coast Express Commuter Rail operates during peak morning and evening periods. Hop on the train at Coquitlam Central for a highspeed service to Vancouver’s Waterfront station.

Bikes on Transit Bicycles are allowed on SkyTrain except during weekday peak periods (7-9 a.m. westbound and 4-6 p.m. eastbound); maximum two bikes per car.
