More than 70 businesses chose call Evanston home this past year. From the new coffee shops and fitness studios to the long awaited opening of Trader Joe’s, this was an exciting year. Evanston logged more than $30 million worth of commercial building activity in 2013. This ranged from new construction to rehabilitation of existing commercial spaces. We saw the completion of several major developments in 2013. We welcomed two major developments along the Chicago Avenue corridor -- a Trader Joe’s (1211 Chicago Avenue) and the nation’s first net-zero energy Walgreens (635 Chicago Avenue). Erie Family Health Center opened in a permanent location at 1285 Hartrey and will serve residents of Evanston and adjacent communities.

There was also significant construction activity at Northwestern University in 2013. Several new buildings, including the Bienen School of Music (pictured above), and continued work on the Visitor’s Center, Sailing Center and several other projects have brought over $188 million worth of construction value to the Evanston campus.
