Special Events DECEMBER 2 DANCE IT YOURSELF NUTCRACKER Calling all wanna-be sugar plum fairies and toy soldiers of every age: dig out your sparkles and buff up your dancing shoes! Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center will present another season of Evanston’s dance-along holiday classic: the “Dance It Yourself Nutcracker.” Don’t miss your chance to make this a holiday tradition. The mother/daughter team of Tess Dinerstein, an ETHS student, and Angela Allyn, a former professional dancer, return again this year with yards of chiffon and lots of tiaras. They have plumbed thrift stores and rummage sales for a broad selection of props, costumes and accessories, so performers of every size can participate in the modulated mayhem! They will lead participants through the story using extra large post-ups and Tchaikovsky’s marvelous music. There will be capes and swords for the soldiers, tutus for the ballerinas, and you may watch or join in as inspired. It only takes an hour! DECEMBER 16 EVANSTON GAMES IN THE PARK Dare the winter and celebrate this holiday season. Frolic outside, build forts and dens out of sticks and (maybe) snow! At this 3rd annual pop-up adventure playground we’ll provide a truckload of sticks, branches, and logs and other interesting play stuff. Bring your kids to experience the special excitement of vigorous winter play and don’t leave behind that inner child of yours! Warm clothes required! Henry’s short story, The Gift of the Magi, Della and her husband Jim desperately want to buy the perfect Christmas gifts for each other; but living paycheck to paycheck while pursuing each of their artistic dreams has left no extra cash for expensive Christmas presents. Arts Performing Arts MUSICAL THEATER A workshop designed to help students understand and develop the performance of musical theater. Students will be coached through group and solo performances. Gymnastics Registering your child for the appropriate class is the first step to ensuring success and fun with gymnastics. Our beginning classes are for children who have never taken a gymnastics class or who have taken a class for less than one year. Certain skills are necessary before taking the Advanced Beginning, Intermediate and Pre-Team classes. If your child has not mastered these skills, he or she will not be able to learn more advanced skills. Your child would then have to switch to a lower level class. Skating Parties During Public Skate Sessions Host a skating party during a public skate. The package includes up to 20 people, ice time during a public skate session, skate rental, and use of the East Lobby for $125. Additional skating tickets can be purchased for $5 each up to a maximum of 30 total skating participants for the party. Reservations are required and a $100 refundable damage deposit is due at the time of reservation.

Hockey EVANSTON YOUTH HOCKEY Evanston Youth Hockey Association (EYHA) provides an affordable, diverse, quality program for boys and girls in Evanston and neighboring communities to learn and play ice hockey at competitive levels in Evanston. Program includes the house program and the travel program. Our house program meets two days a week and serves those players who are interested in hockey, but only want to play on weekends. Our travel program competes in the Northern Illinois Hockey League. EYHA travel programs have won state titles–most recently in the Under-10 girls division and NIHL Championships. Did you know? EYHA is a member of the NHL Diversity family. EYHA has been a leader in the area of diversity since the 1960s and it is an honor for the National Hockey League to grant them NHL Diversity affiliate status.
House League The Mite program is administered as an in-house program emphasizing skill development and fun. Squirts and above compete against other North Shore rinks.
Travel Hockey EYHA administers the travel hockey and teams are offered from Mite through high school. The program’s curriculum is designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey skating through Learn to Skate USA. Refunds, Pro-rating and Make Ups
The figure skating program follows the department’s refund policy. Classes are not pro-rated if registering after class begins. Missed classes (2 max.) can only be made up with prior approval. Email make up requests to the Figure Skating Program Coordinator.
Progression and Testing
Classes should be completed and passed in sequential order. Each child’s progress will be monitored weekly. A week after the child is ready, an instructor will evaluate their skills. After passing the evaluation, the following week the skater will move to the next level. Badges are available at the front desk for a $2 fee.
Which class is right for me or my child?
Parent Tot class is for parents who wish to skate with their children. Snowplow Sam 1–4 levels are designed to help the skater develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice. Basic Skills 1–6 are the fundamentals of the sport. See class listing for more details. Pre-Free Skate and Free Skate 1–6 is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins and jumps—all of which build on the previous skill, providing skaters a strong foundation of all elements. Adults: Skaters 18 years and up who have never skated before begin at Adult 1.
Learn to Skate USA Membership The figure skating program follows the curriculum of Learn to Skate USA, which is supported by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey, US Speedskating and Special Olympics. LTS USA requires a yearly membership fee of $17 per child which is valid July 1–June 30 annually. Payment for your membership will be required when registering for your first skating class starting with the Fall 2017 class registration. Membership fees are not pro-rated regardless of when registering for your first skating class. All figure skating programs require the membership. The Evanston Ecology center offers 2-hour birthday party programs on most Saturday and Sunday. An instructor will lead a nature or outdoor oriented party that includes hands on activities for 45 minutes. The rest of the time is open for treats and activities on your own. The parties are for ages 4 years and up for a 15 person maximum. The renter is responsible for decorations and treats. Birthday Topics Include: Animal Party, Birds of a Feather, Reptile Romp, Bug Party, Dino Party, Rocking Rocks, Potions and Concoctions and Geocaching and custom parties. Parties range from teeter-tottering preschoolers to teens spiking volleyballs. Chandler-Newberger Community Center, 1028 Central St., is the place to make memories for a lifetime. Ice-skating Rinks Locations: Arrington Lakefront Lagoon in Dawes Park, Sheridan Rd. at Church St. Baker Park, Forest Ave. at Keeney St. Ackerman Park, Central St. at McDaniel. There are no attendants on duty to supervise rinks and shelter houses are closed. When will ice be ready for skating? Crews will flood the rinks beginning in midDecember after there are consistently low temperature forecasts. Traditionally, the latest rink openings are in mid-February. At the rinks, after the ice is thick enough for skating, open signs will be posted. Until signs are posted, we ask that you do not skate, especially at the nicer rinks, such as, Ackerman and Baker Parks. Skating on thin ice may cause the skate blade to break through and cut the plastic liner causing water leakage. Into the Woods
Chandler-Newberger’s Blue Room is home to unique programming that is created specifically for children ages 3–5 years. In the Blue Room, teachers focus on your child’s emotional, physical and cognitive growth via projects, story time, show and tell and free play. Our activities explore letters, numbers, shapes, colors, fluency and literacy. Socialization includes time on the adjacent play lot and in Chandler-Newberger’s full sized gymnasium. Robert Crown DCFS Licensed Preschool GENERAL INFORMATION Robert Crown Community Center’s toddler, preschool, and after-school programs are licensed by the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS). The Creative Play Preschool at the Robert Crown Community Center has served families of Evanston and nearby communities since 1988. The benefits of having a preschool in a community center setting is having access to the many offerings the Center. Students play in the large gym, grassy fields surrounding the facility, have access to our ice rinks, and various outdoor play areas in the neighborhood. We also offer three nutritious meals a day including a hot lunch for full day programs. Families may choose from the various programs including the Take Two program for 2–3 year olds, the Creative Play program for 3–5 year olds, and our Dual Enrollment program, which serves children enrolled in District 65 half day programs, but need full day care.
Registration Information Our registration process includes a tour with the program coordinator, class schedules, content, curriculum and assessment, the parent handbook, program fees and a registration packet. Our Dual Enrollment Program is a unique program designed for those enrolled in District 65 halfday programs. This program is an elective collaborative effort, in which children are greeted and supervised during bus drop off and pick up and escorted to their prospective recreation programs. Our goal is to provide a full day of quality child care and enrichment for children attending Evanston head Start, Preschool for All, and SPAAC programs. Our Take Two program, is a great first independent experience for a child! Take Two is designed to provide children with a warm, nurturing environment for children 2–3 years old. Our staff members introduce preschool concepts in a caring, cozy environment, supporting a gentle transition from home to school, emphasizing active development of children’s social, emotional, and cognitive skills. The teacher’s focus on preschool readiness preparedness such as taking turns, following simple directions, listening, and sharing. Fee Assistance (Scholarships)
Please register at least a week in advance. Classes which don’t reach a minimum enrollment level are canceled.
Fee assistance is awarded to qualified Evanston residents on a sliding scale according to the number of family members in relation to total family income. Fee assistance is not available for special events or trips. Information regarding the fee assistance application process and the documents needed to verify family income and residency may be obtained at any Evanston Recreation Division community center, the Evanston Ecology Center or the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center. Facility addresses are listed on page 2. Forms may be downloaded at www.cityofevanston. org/recreationfeeassistance.
Who is a Resident? To receive the Evanston resident rate for a Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department program, you must live in ZIP code 60201 or 60202.
Class Cancellations In case of class changes or program cancellation, we’ll notify you in advance by telephone or postcard. Generally, refunds are issued within two weeks. If circumstances arise causing us to cancel a class session, every effort will be made to schedule a make up class.
Payment Deadline Payment in full is required at registration (except for summer camps, which allow a $50 deposit per child per camp #/session to hold a space until the balance due deadline). You (or your child) will be admitted to a class or program after full payment is made. If your family has been approved for fee assistance, your portion of the fee must be paid in full before you (or your child) will be registered in the class.
Insurance The City of Evanston does not carry hospitalization insurance for program participants. Contact your health care provider for details regarding your individual plan.
Refund Policy Unless the program is canceled by the City, a $5 service fee will be charged for refunds. For classes already in session, refunds will be prorated and issued in the following situations: 1. Written proof of illness or medical problem for the participant or immediate family member prior to or during the program or activity. 2. Written proof that the participant has moved or will move out of the service boundaries of the City of Evanston prior to or during the program or activity. 3. Unusual circumstances which fall into the category of “hardship.” No refunds on Daily, Seasonal or Yearly Activity Passes/Programs These include beach tokens, ice-skating passes, extended care coupons, fitness passes, season launch permits, leagues, dog beach passes and the like.
Camp Transfers and Refunds Summer camps are covered separately from the refund policy listed above. Child Supervision/Pick-up Policies Parents/guardians are responsible for picking up children promptly at the time the program is scheduled to end. Instructors often have other programs to teach and can’t supervise children for an extended period after the program. Parents or guardians who pick up a child more than five minutes late from a program are assessed a late fee of $10 per child per 15-minute time period. For instance, if the program ends at 4pm and you arrive between 4:06 and 4:21, the late fee is $10. If you call and advise staff that you are running late, we’ll allow a 10-minute grace period, followed by the $10 per 15-minute late fee.
Rentals The City of Evanston rents rooms for meetings or parties (some with kitchen facilities), gymnasiums, auditoriums, ice rinks and the “lagoon” building, Sheridan Rd. at Church St. For information, call 311 (847-448-4311).
Photographs and Videotaping Program participants may be photographed or videotaped. These images may appear in future promotional materials. If you do not want to be included, please tell the photographer. If you don’t want your child photographed, please call 847-448-8041.
Americans with Disabilities Act The City of Evanston’s programs, activities and services are subject to all applicable laws regarding non-discrimination, including the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
