What’s Inside Waste & Recycling Infrastructure Projects Street Cleaning Bulk Trash
In 2013, the City completed street resurfacing and a protected bike lane on Davis Street between Ridge Avenue and Hinman Avenue. This project was designed with a green infrastructure approach, taking into account all modes of travel as well as adjacent land uses.
Printed on 30% recycled paper with seed-based ink.

Planned Infrastructure Improvement Projects in 2014 The City of Evanston has begun design and planning work for 2014 and beyond. This year, City staff will be talking with the community regarding a number of planned projects, including: • An update to the City’s bike plan. • Intersection improvements at Emerson St., Ridge Ave. and Green Bay Rd. • Intersection improvements at Central St. and Green Bay Rd.
• Streetscape, biking and road improvements along Sheridan Rd., from Isabella St. to Chicago Ave. • Streetscape, biking and road improvements along Chicago Ave., from Sheridan Rd. to Grove St. See inside for a map of planned 2014 infrastructure improvement projects.

Collections The City’s 2014 Recycling Fair will take place Saturday, July 12 from 9am to noon at Evanston Township High School, 1600 Dodge Ave. For more information, visit the City’s online calendar at cityofevanston.org, or call 311.
New Sanitation Fee Structure As part of an ongoing effort to promote greener living, the City established a new sanitation fee structure that increased the cost of 95-gallon refuse carts from $14.95 per month to $17.95 per month, effective January 2014. The monthly fee for the 65-gallon carts remains the same, at $7.95. The price difference is designed to decrease the amount of waste generated by the City and encourage residents to reduce, reuse and recycle. To help determine the size of your refuse cart, please refer to the serial number located on the front. The 65-gallon carts start with “65G” and the 95-gallon carts start with “95G.”
To avoid the increased fee, the City welcomes residents to downsize to a 65-gallon cart. Requests can be made by calling 3-1-1, or submitted online at cityofevanston.org/311. If residents exceed the capacity of the 65-gallon cart repeatedly, then they will automatically be upgraded to a 95-gallon cart and charged the increased monthly fee. In 2013, the residential waste program was projected to generate approximately 1,500 tons of waste less than it did in 2012, and 5,000 tons less than in 2008. The reduction in waste generation is not only good for the environment, but it also helps reduce the City’s solid waste fund expenses.

Yard Waste Collections The City’s weekly yard waste pick-ups begin on Monday, March 31 and continue on residents’ regular refuse collection day through December 4.
The City offers two options to dispose of yard waste: 1. Place yard waste in paper yard bags, such as 30-gallon kraft paper waste bags, available at local stores. A yard waste sticker must be affixed to each lawn waste bag. Plastic bags will not be collected. 2. F ill a 90-gallon yard waste cart (available for purchase). These reusable carts do not require the use of bags. To order a yard waste cart, complete the order form online at cityofevanston.org/yardwaste Residents can pay online or at the City Collector’s office. A cart costs $82.50.
Residents can buy yard waste stickers at Jewel grocery stores, Lemoi Hardware, Harold’s Hardware, Home Depot, the Levy Senior Center and the City Collector’s office. Brush must be no longer than four feet in length and two inches in diameter and bundled. Raking or blowing yard waste or leaves into the streets is illegal. Violators will be fined. Special pick-up fees for yard waste collection will be assessed after 48 hours for bags without stickers. Three bags will be charged $25. Each additional three bags will be charged $10.
Infrastructure Project Map The map below shows planned infrastructure improvement projects for 2014, including street resurfacing, alley paving, protected bike lane installation, water and sewer main replacement, and park and facility renovations.
