Waste Services

Food and Yard Waste

Weekly food and yard waste collection takes place on your regular refuse collection day, April 1 through December 5, 2024. There are two collection options:

Food and yard waste cart (food and yard waste)

As part of an expanded composting program, food scraps can “ride along” with other yard waste in carts. Order a cart at cityofevanston.org/yardwaste or call 311. Cost: $88.69 plus a $37.63 annual fee.

Yard waste bag with sticker (yard waste only)

Yard waste only can also be disposed of in paper yard waste bags affixed with an Evanston yard waste sticker, available at the Levy Senior Center, Morton Civic Center and other locations. Cost: $2.25 each.

Food Waste by Collective Resource Compost

Year-round composting is available through the City’s exclusive food scrap hauler, Collective Resource Compost, by visiting www.collectiveresourcecompost.coop.

Refuse and Recycling Services Fees

Residents have two choices for weekly pickup:

Option #1: 65-gallon container

$11.10 per month

No additional bags of garbage allowed beyond your container

Option #2: 95-gallon container

$25.07 per month

One additional 30-gallon bag of garbage allowed beyond your filled container

Any additional bags of trash beyond the allowed amount will be tagged for a special pickup for an additional fee. Additional trash containers are available for $75 each with a $11.10 monthly fee.

Reduced Water and Sewer Rate

Reducing Pollutants

Sewer Repair Financial Assistance Program

Have you recently completed a sewer repair? You may be eligible for the City’s Sewer Repair Financial Assistance Program! The City is providing financial assistance to income-qualified community members who’ve completed sewer repairs in 2021 or later to alleviate a public nuisance, hazardous condition and environmental threat. To report street light outages in your neighborhood, please contact 311.

To report alley light outages, please contact ComEd at 1-800-EDISON1. The City of Evanston does not maintain alley lighting.

Alley Maintenance

Each year, starting in the spring, Evanston’s more than 300 unpaved alleys are periodically graded by the City. This is done to eliminate potholes and ruts caused by vehicles, weather and other factors. The process improves travel and reduces puddling.
