SALSA DANCING IMAGINARY ANIMALS IN PAPIER-MACHE

Class covering beginning- to intermediate-level technique in Broadway-style jazz dance. Students will learn about jazz aesthetics, movement vocabulary, rhythm, and stage presence while developing their own, unique jazz style. Prior dance experience welcome but not required. This introductory class to salsa dance will focus on the foundations of salsa movement. We will focus on individual technique. Micro League Soccer introduces players to soccer through fun soccer specific activities that engage each player’s imagination under the guidance of our professionally licensed coaching staff. During the course of our training, players will learn different ball mastery skills to control the ball, evade defenders, and score goals! The training sessions at 1 hour long but broken into 15 minute blocks. These blocks will include a fun, skill-ofthe-day warm-up activity, imaginative skill training activity, and two conditioned games for skill development. Players are grouped into “teams” each week for the conditioned games and records are not kept week to week. The concentration is on the player’s skill acquisition and enjoyment of the sport, rather than team records and rankings. This program will prepare players for Team Evanston’s pre-travel program, and is a great introduction to learning soccer in a fun, developmentally appropriate environment. This three week session is open to any boy or girl in Kindergarten. The huddle will meet for one 45 minutes on three separate dates. Focus will be on development of skills and drills with periods of scrimmaging. SCHOOL OF SOCCER This program is designed to educate young soccer players on how to play while developing their appreciation for the game. The coaches are professionally licensed and sport safe trained, and ready to pass on their knowledge to the next generation of players. Players will be grouped by age and focus on their technique with the soccer ball. Not only will participants learn cool soccer tricks they will develop their physical health and emotional well-being in our inclusive environment. Location: Fleetwood-Jourdain Center Age: 5-9 yrs. Are you looking for a new and exciting activity? Diana Unger will teach you the basics of fencing. Fencing requires patience, concentration, discipline, and self-awareness. Its rewards are selfconfidence, self-control and emotional strength for a healthier lifestyle. Private fencing lessons are also available, for more information contact Michelle at 847-448-8681. Equipment: Weapons, jackets and masks are provided. In response to COVID-19, each participant will receive a mask and a fencing jacket to keep throughout the 8-week period. The masks and jackets will be pre-cleaned and disinfected. Masks and jackets should be returned at the end of the class. Weapons will be kept at the facility and disinfected prior to each use. Participants in Intermediate and Advanced classes are strongly encouraged to purchase their own equipment. Each participant is expected to purchase an underarm protector and glove, as these are personal items, as well as register for a $10 membership with USFA. ADVANCED FENCING-TOURNAMENT TRAINING Sharpen your skills in this advanced fencing class where Coach Unger will work with you on preparing for tournaments, working with different weapons and teaching you meditation skills to give you the edge over your opponent. At this level participants are expected to have their own glove and underarm protector, if you own your own equipment please bring it to class. Each participant should be a member of the United States Fencing Association. Register before the first class. Can’t make all of the classes? Gymnasts will learn skills on the bars, beam, vault, and floor, and will get lots of practice jumping and flipping on our inflatable air trak! Whether this is your child’s first gymnastics class or they’re an experienced gymnast looking for a challenge, our coaches will work with them to perfect their skills and safely and progressively work towards new goals. Refunds, Pro-rating and Make Ups The figure skating program follows the department’s refund policy. Classes are not pro-rated if registering after class begins. There are no make up classes.

Progression and Testing Classes should be completed and passed in sequential order. Each child’s progress will be monitored weekly and at the end of the session an instructor will evaluate their skills. After passing the evaluation, the skater should enroll in the next level.

Which class is right for me or my child? Parent Tot class is for parents who wish to skate with their children. Snowplow Sam 1–4 levels are designed to help the skater develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice. Basic Skills 1–6 are the fundamentals of the sport. See class listing for more details. Pre-Free Skate and Free Skate 1–6 is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins and jumps—all of which build on the previous skill, providing skaters a strong foundation of all elements. The Learn to Skate basic skills are the fundamentals and basic knowledge of the sport. The six levels introduce the fundamental moves: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and mohawks while progressing at their own rate. The Adult curriculum is designed for both beginning and experienced adult skaters who wish to improve their skating skills. Participation in the program will help promote physical fitness and improve balance and coordination while teaching proper skating techniques. This is an exciting program for people who look to skating as an enjoyable part of a fit and healthy lifestyle. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Division of Education has field packs and resource trunks available for loan to educators. Field packs contain hands-on equipment and reference material to encourage nature exploration. Resource trunks are large plastic containers filled with supplemental items to enhance lessons. The Evanston Ecology Center has 7 packs and trunks available for loan for free to educators. Bins may be loaned for up to two weeks by picking them up and signing them out of the Ecology Center MondayFriday from 8:30am–5pm. MAKE A MOSAIC

School Programs After-School Programs THE PODCAST AT CROWN Podcasts are valuable tools for teaching teens to use spoken language to communicate. Teens will learn the difference between scripted and Q&A podcasts, as well as familiarize themselves with a wide range of podcast topics. Robert Crown DCFS Licensed Preschool GENERAL INFORMATION Robert Crown Community Center’s toddler, preschool and after-school programs are licensed by the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS). The Creative Play Preschool at the Robert Crown Community Center has served Evanston families and nearby communities since 1988. Some benefits include access to the large gym, ice rinks and various outdoor grassy areas and playing fields. Three nutritious meals are provided daily; a hot lunch for full day programs. Choose from various programs including the Take Two program for age 2-3 years and the Creative Play program for age 3-5 years.

Registration Information Registration process includes a tour with the program coordinator, sharing information on class schedules, content, curriculum, assessment and program fees. You will be given the registration packet and the parent handbook. Note: prior to enrollment, parents are responsible for all forms in the registration packet, a copy of the child’s birth certificate and the last 6 months immunization records returned to the center. CREATIVE PLAY PRESCHOOL This plan, innovative play with a purpose, is the standard for the community center based early childhood program. Our multi-age classroom offers children the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities as they develop socially, emotionally and cognitively through PLAY. Daily classroom activities are planned to meet the needs of each child and are focused on the development of each students problem solving skills, peer relationships and making real life connections through math, literacy, science, music, movement, various arts and crafts activities. Toilet Training is required.

TAKE TWO This program is a great first independent experience for any child. It is designed for children age 2-3 years. Our staff members introduce preschool concepts in a caring and cozy environment, supporting a gentile transition from home to school with emphasis on the active development of children’s social, emotional and cognitive skills. The focus is on preschool readiness preparedness such as taking turns, following simple directions, listening and sharing. Also including individual instruction during center time and an interactive circle time, followed by art, music and movement, story time, outdoor play and gym games. Toilet Training is not required.

BLUE ROOM CLASSES-AGES 2-4 YEARS Our classes for 2-4 year olds are designed to offer your toddler/preschooler a gentle introduction to the classroom experience. Children are invited to participate in circle time, music and movement, and art with the support and guidance of their parent or caregiver. Classes, with the exception of Gymnastics with a Grown Up, will be held outside when weather permits or in our spacious Blue Room classroom and will be limited to six children. Children must be comfortable wearing masks for the duration of the class. All activities will reflect current CDC guidance for the health and safety of all participants.

Heaven Can Wait This program is designed to honor our most experienced community members. The Levy Senior Center Foundation will underwrite the Levy Senior Center annual membership fees for program participants who are age 90+. To qualify, registrants need only to show an official ID with proof of their birthday when they register at the Levy Center.

The Dennis Newton Scholarship Fund provides Levy Center members the financial opportunity to attend our day trips. As a precaution, we have temporarily suspended all Levy Senior Center day trips. The City of Evanston offers two enhanced lunch program locations through a grant administered by Age Options, which will offset the fee of each meal. No person age 60+ shall be denied participation due to the inability to contribute.

INSPIRE THROUGH FLOWERS The Levy Senior Center is pleased to announce a new partnership with Inspire Through Flowers, formerly known as Random Acts of Flowers. This group meets Wednesdays, 4:30-6pm and Thursdays, 9:30am-1pm in Craft Room A. This all volunteer group collects recycled vases, donated flowers and arranges them into beautiful bouquets. Inspire Through Flowers then delivers the bouquets to hospitals, senior/nursing communities and veteran’s facilities. All floral material that cannot be used is composted in a sustainable manner. We need your help! We are seeking vases and volunteers. Please add your clean vases to the lobby collection box. Volunteer space is limited. BEACH LOCATIONS NORTH TO SOUTH

This ramp is for launching power boats, personal watercraft (jet skis), and large sailboats requiring a trailer to launch. Boat’s that are 28’ or longer, or have a running draft of 36” or deeper, may find launch difficulty. Season launch permits are required for each boat/vessel. Each season permit includes one parking hangtag, one launch sticker, and a key card for the entrance gate. Evanston resident boat owners are required to show proof of residency to obtain resident rates. Ramp opens: early/mid May—end of October, depending on weather and dredging conditions. TEEN OUTREACH BEACH PASSES

Teens ages 13–18 yrs. who may not otherwise be able to go to the beach, may pick up a 10-punch free beach pass at community centers and the main Evanston Public Library. Proof of Evanston residency is required. Passes will be available starting on Monday, May 17. Information: 311.

The facility is for the launching, retrieval and storage of non-motorized vessels, small sailboats (Sunfish, Laser, etc.), catamarans, windsurfing boards, canoes, stand up paddle boards and kayaks for only approved and permitted vessels. It is unlawful to launch any vessel at any swimming beach or other public right of way within the borders of the City of Evanston. Swimming and wading are not permitted at this location. Facility dates: May 15–October 24, 2021 Daily hours: 7am–dusk. Storage spaces: current availability is for single hull sailboats only; waitlist for all other spaces. Pooch Park and Dog Beach The Cook County Animal and Rabies Control Ordinance requires written proof on file with the Dog Park/Dog Beach operator of an examination within the past year for any communicable diseases including current vaccinations or titers (antibodies) for Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus and Bordetella (kennel cough), as well as internal parasites as confirmed by stool sample. The dog must be currently licensed in Evanston or proof is required that the dog is licensed by the local government where the dog’s owner lives. DOG BEACH Evanston’s Dog Beach is located north of the Church St. Power Boat Ramp, 1631 Sheridan Rd. Admission is restricted to owners/handlers with Dog Beach season pass. At the time of printing, it has not been determined if the conditions will allow the Dog Beach to be open for the 2021 season. Information/updates: cityofevanston.org/dogbeach.

POOCH PARK The Skokie Park District and City of Evanston jointly developed 2.7-acre off-leash area, located on the east bank of the North Shore Channel, between Main and Oakton Streets. Park open: 5am–10pm daily, year-round. Evanston or Skokie residents Pooch Park fees: $45 for the first dog, $15 for each additional dog. Nonresident fee: $85 for the first dog, $15 for each additional dog. Rules and requirements: Local code determines the number of dogs allowed in a household. Before purchasing a membership, your dog(s) must have the appropriate shots and up-to-date paperwork must be turned in at the time of registration. Please register at least a week in advance. Classes which don’t reach a minimum enrollment level are canceled.

Fee assistance is awarded to qualified Evanston residents on a sliding scale according to the number of family members in relation to total family income. Fee assistance is not available for special events or trips. Information regarding the fee assistance application process and the documents needed to verify family income and residency may be obtained at any Evanston Recreation Division community center. Facility addresses are listed on page 2. Forms may be downloaded at cityofevanston.org/ recreationfeeassistance.

Who is a Resident? To receive the Evanston resident rate for a Parks and Recreation Department program, you must live in ZIP code 60201 or 60202.

Class Cancellations In case of class changes or program cancellation, we’ll notify you in advance by telephone or postcard. Generally, refunds are issued within two weeks. If circumstances arise causing us to cancel a class session, every effort will be made to schedule a make up class.

Payment Deadline Payment in full is required at registration (except for summer camps, which allow a $50 deposit per child per camp #/session to hold a space until the balance due deadline). You (or your child) will be admitted to a class or program after full payment is made. If your family has been approved for fee assistance, your portion of the fee must be paid in full before you (or your child) will be registered in the class.

Insurance The City of Evanston does not carry hospitalization insurance for program participants. Contact your health care provider for details regarding your individual plan.

Refund Policy Unless the program is canceled by the City, a $5 service fee will be charged for refunds. For classes already in session, refunds will be prorated and issued in the following situations: 1. Written proof of illness or medical problem for the participant or immediate family member prior to or during the program or activity. 2. Written proof that the participant has moved or will move out of the service boundaries of the City of Evanston prior to or during the program or activity. 3. Unusual circumstances which fall into the category of “hardship.” No refunds on Daily, Seasonal or Yearly Activity Passes/Programs These include beach tokens, ice-skating passes, extended care coupons, fitness passes, season launch permits, leagues, dog beach passes and the like.

Camp Transfers and Refunds Summer camps are covered separately from the refund policy listed above. For more information, please contact the City of Evanston Parks and Recreation Department at 311 (847-448-4311) or refer to the annual camp guide at cityofevanston. org/summercamps.

How to Initiate a Refund To initiate the refund process, please mail or drop off written notice of your request, along with written proof of illness, moving or hardship (see refund policy), to the community center where the program is held or the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center . Information: call 311 (847-448-4311).

Child Supervision/Pick-up Policies Parents/guardians are responsible for picking up children promptly at the time the program is scheduled to end. Instructors often have other programs to teach and can’t supervise children for an extended period after the program. Parents or guardians who pick up a child more than five minutes late from a program are assessed a late fee of $10 per child per 15-minute time period. For instance, if the program ends at 4pm and you arrive between 4:06 and 4:21, the late fee is $10. If you call and advise staff that you are running late, we’ll allow a 10-minute grace period, followed by the $10 per 15-minute late fee.
